Declining Profit Margins - A 10 Year Trend, Larry Bitney Jun 1999

Declining Profit Margins - A 10 Year Trend, Larry Bitney

Cornhusker Economics

In the May 12 issue of this newsletter, Gary Bredensteiner discussed the drop in farm income for 1998. He used data from the Nebraska Farm Business Association (NFBA) and the Nebraska Farm and Ranch Management Program (NFRMP) annual summaries to show the impact on typical farms. Low prices for all major commodities was the primary cause of the sharp reduction in income for 1998.

Synecology And Disturbance Regimes Of Sagebrush Steppe Ecosystems, Neil E. West Jun 1999

Synecology And Disturbance Regimes Of Sagebrush Steppe Ecosystems, Neil E. West

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The pre-Columbian mixed-growth form, composition, and structure of sagebrush steppes was mostly due to the highly variable semiarid climate and long fire-free intervals. The weak stability of this relatively complex vegetation was easily upset by excessive livestock grazing, especially in drought periods. After a few decades of uncontrolled livestock grazing, it was easy for introduced winter annuals, especially cheatgrass, to dominate the understory and alter the fire regime to larger, more frequent fires that occur earlier in the year. Accelerated soil erosion has caused many sites to lose the potential for management back toward native perennial dominance by controlling only …

Film Formation By Marine Bacteria At A Model Fluid Interface, Vera Zutic, Nadica Ivosevic, Vesna Svetlicic, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam Jun 1999

Film Formation By Marine Bacteria At A Model Fluid Interface, Vera Zutic, Nadica Ivosevic, Vesna Svetlicic, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam

Faculty Publications

We have characterized the nonspecific interactions in the initial attachment and film formation by marine bacteria at a dynamic fluid interface: seawater/dropping mercury electrode. Experimental evidence is presented that bacteria readily establish molecular contact with the metal substrate without mediation of a conditioning film. Prevalence of hydrophobic over electrostatic interactions and the possible importance of Ca2+ bridging could be inferred. The attachment of individual bacterial cells is faster than their transport from the aqueous medium, as is the case in the transport-controlled adsorption of biopolymers. The cell aggregates yield distinct electrical attachment signals, allowing a comparison between cell-cell and …

Estructura Del Condrocráneo Y Esqueleto Visceral De Larvas De Pseudis Minuta (Anura, Pseudidae, E. O. Lavilla, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

The chondrocranium and visceral skeleton of Pseudis minuta tadpoles are described, based on a series of five larvae in stages 31 - 35 of Gosner (1960). Among their striking characters are the presence of peculiar articular surfaces between cornua trabeculae and suprarostral cartilage, the incomplete development of the orbital cartilage, the high fenestration of the floor of the cavum cranii, the fusion of posterior foramina, and the fusion of spicules 3 and 4 in the hyobranchial skeleton.

Barriers To U.S.-European Agricultural Trade, George H. Pfeiffer Jun 1999

Barriers To U.S.-European Agricultural Trade, George H. Pfeiffer

Cornhusker Economics

Serious threats to continuation of good trade relations between the U.S. and the European Union (EU) have arisen recently affecting both plant and animal products. The ostensible justification for European import bans on U.S. beef is based largely on the use of hormones and growth stimulants by U.S. cattle producers, a practice that is not permitted in Europe. Threats to the export of grain and oil seed products as well as the seeds themselves are related to European reluctance to introduce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the food supply. A cynical view of the existence of trade barriers is that …

West Florida Shelf Response To Upwelling Favorable Wind Forcing: Kinematics, Zhenjiang Li, Robert H. Weisberg Jun 1999

West Florida Shelf Response To Upwelling Favorable Wind Forcing: Kinematics, Zhenjiang Li, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The barotropic responses of the west Florida continental shelf to idealized upwelling favorable alongshore and offshore wind stresses are studied using the three-dimensional, time-dependent, primitive equation Princeton Ocean Model (POM). When forced with uniform winds, the shelf circulation evolves quickly to a quasi steady state. A southeastward alongshore wind lowers sea level along the coast and drives a southeastward coastal jet with a relatively weak northwestward return flow farther offshore. A southwestward offshore wind lowers sea level along the west Florida coast and raises sea level along the Panhandle coast. Two independent circulation gyres are set up in association with …

Local Data Assimilation In The Estimation Of Barotropic And Baroclinic Open Boundary Conditions, Igor Shulman, James K. Lewis, John G. Mayer Jun 1999

Local Data Assimilation In The Estimation Of Barotropic And Baroclinic Open Boundary Conditions, Igor Shulman, James K. Lewis, John G. Mayer

Faculty Publications

The problem of data assimilation in the specification of open boundary conditions for limited area models is addressed in this paper. Optimization approaches are detailed, which are based on combining available data on an open boundary with the physics of the hydrodynamical model. In our case the physics is in terms of the flux of energy through the open boundary. These optimized boundary conditions, for both barotropic and baroclinic situations, interpreted physically as special Linearizations of the Bernoulli equation for each normal mode. Because of the complexity of decomposing variables into normal modes for open boundaries with varying bathymetry, we …

Structure Of G(Iα1)·Gppnhp, Autoinhibition In A Gα Protein-Substrate Complex, David E. Coleman, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The structure of the G protein G(i 1/4 ) complexed with the nonhydrolyzable GTP analog guanosine-5'-(βγ-imino)triphosphate (GppNHp) has been determined at a resolution of 1.5 Å. In the active site of G(i 1/4 )·GppNHp, a water molecule is hydrogen bonded to the side chain of Glu43 and to an oxygen atom of the γ-phosphate group. The side chain of the essential catalytic residue Gln204 assumes a conformation which is distinctly different from that observed in complexes with either guanosine 5'-O-3-thiotriphosphate or the transition state analog GDP·A1F4-. Hydrogen bonding and steric interactions position Gln204 such …
