Host-Driven Population Dynamics In An Herbivorous Insect, Tiina Ylioja, Heikki Roininen, Matthew P. Ayres, Matti Rousi, Peter W. Price
Dartmouth Scholarship
Understanding the nature and relative importance of endogenous (density-dependent) and exogenous (density-independent) effects on population dynamics remains a central problem in ecology. Evaluation of these forces has been constrained by the lack of long time series of population densities and largely limited to populations chosen for their unique dynamics (e.g., outbreak insects). Especially in herbivore populations, the relative contributions of bottom-up and top-down effects (resources and natural enemies, respectively) have been difficult to compare because population data have rarely been combined with resource measurements. The feeding scars of a wood-mining herbivorous insect (Phytobia betulae Kangas; Diptera: Agromyzidae) of birch …
The Ultraviolet Birds Of Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Ultraviolet Birds Of Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Our human eyesight does not allow us to perceive the world as most birds do, and that they at times might be responding to visual clues literally beyond our ken. For example, are the ultraviolet "tear-drops" on the cheeks of a Mourning Dove an important visual "target" for close-up courtship, or are they perhaps important for stimulating preening by its mate? It would be interesting to modify or eliminate these small marks, and see what behavioral effects might result. Two individual male birds that, to human eyes, might appear identical, may be of quite differing attraction to females, depending upon …

Fish Skeletal Muscle:Adenoisine Triphosphate And Adenine Nucleotide Metabolites In Relation To The Texture And Quality Of Fish, Carmel Wills
Doctoral
The changes which occurred in the concentrations of ATP, ADP, AMP, inosine monophosphate, inosine and hypoxanthine in skeletal muscle of rainbow trout, salmon and goldfish during the onset and resolution of rigor mortis were investigated. The effects of ante mortem handling and methods of slaughter on the concentrations of these nucleotides in muscle immediately after death and during storage of fish at 3° and at -30° were examined. Very careful handling of fish and killing by a method which did not cause contraction of muscle were essential if concentrations of ATP were to be at levels indicative of resting muscle …

New Species Of Arpactophilus From The Island Of New Caledonia (Hymenoptera, Sphecidae), Richard M. Bohart
Insecta Mundi
Seventeen new species of Arpactophilus from New Caledonia are described and figured. These are the first from New Caledonia and bring the number to 37 species of the genus from Australia and nearby islands, all east of Wallace's Line. The new species are abdominalis, arboreus, brochus, caledonicus, concavus, cuspidis, dolichocara, gressitti, irwini, kraussi, nemoralis, nigripes, propodealis, schlingeri, scutellaris, sylvaticus, and webbi. All of these have an occipital carina, sometimes most evident ventrally. As a rule there are 2 forewing submarginal cells, but in caledonicus, dolichocara, nigripes, and propodealis there is only one such cell.

Acmaeodera Pubiventris Horn (Coleoptera: Buprestidae): A Polytypic Species Or A Superspecies?, Richard L. Wescott
Insecta Mundi
Acmaeodera pubiventris Horn was studied in detail and, without rejecting that it may be a superspecies, I concluded it is a polytypic species comprised of A. p. pubiuentris, A. p. lanata Horn, A. p. yumae Knull-these generally have been considered as full species-and a new subspecies, A. p. panocheae, described herein. It is suggested that A. p. yumae could be a megasubspecies. Detailed comparisons are made, variation is discussed, and biological and distributional data are provided. A. p. lanata is recorded from Mexico (Baja California) for the first time.

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
A comparative vegetation analysis of an island-wide transect of South Padre Island, Texas, was conducted in 1997 using aerial multispectral digital videography and line intercept ground truth techniques to assess the usefulness of videography in estimating vegetative cover and species identifications. Ground truth data were used to assess vegetative change occurring in the 20 years since the report of Judd et al. (1977) on the vegetation of South Padre Island. Estimates of total cover by ground truth and remote sensing techniques were similar (2.45% difference) on South Padre Island. Thus, airborne multispectral digital videography is an effective technique for assessing …

Evolutionary Endocrinology Of Juvenile Hormone Esterase: Functional Relationship With Wing Polymorphism In The Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Anthony J. Zera, Yuan Huang
Anthony Zera Publications
The existence, nature, and physiological consequences of genetic variation for juvenile hormone esterase (JHE) activity was studied in the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus. Hemolymph (blood) JHE activity was sixfold lower in nascent short-winged (SW) females, relative to nascent long-winged (LW) females, during the last juvenile stadium (stage). Morph-associated genetic variation for JHE activity had two causes, variation in loci: (1) regulating whole-organism enzyme activity; and (2) controlling the degree to which JHE is secreted into the blood. Reduced JHE activity in nascent SW-selected individuals was associated with reduced in vivo juvenile hormone catabolism. This suggests that variation in JHE …

The Endocrine Genetics Of Wing Polymorphism In Gryllus: Critique Of Recent Studies And State Of The Art, Anthony J. Zera
Anthony Zera Publications
In a series of papers, the most recent of which was published in Evolution, quantitative-genetic experiments were undertaken on reproductive and physiological correlates of wing polymorphism in the sand cricket, Gryllus firmus (Fairbairn 1994; Fairbairn and Yadlowski 1997; Roff et al. 1997). A goal of these studies was to determine the physiological causes underlying: (1) genetic variation for an ecologically important threshold trait (wing polymorphism); and (2) genetic correlations between wing morph and other reproductive and migratory features, such as fecundity and flight muscle histolysis. These authors concluded that genetic variation for the activity of the endocrine regulator, juvenile hormone …

Vadim Gladyshev Publications
The intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species, together with the thioredoxin and glutathione systems, is thought to participate in redox signaling in mammalian cells. The activity of thioredoxin is dependent on the redox status of thioredoxin reductase (TR), the activity of which in turn is dependent on a selenocysteine residue. Two mammalian TR isozymes (TR2 and TR3), in addition to that previously characterized (TR1), have now been identified in humans and mice. All three TR isozymes contain a selenocysteine residue that is located in the penultimate position at the carboxyl terminus and which is encoded by a UGA codon. The …

Cost Of Augmenting Stream Flow Through Reduced Groundwater Pumping, Raymond J. Supalla, Osei Yeboah
Cornhusker Economics
There is currently considerable speculation and concern over the possibility of using reduced groundwater pumping to augment stream flow. This option has been raised as a possibility for helping Nebraska meet its compact obligations on the Republican River and as a means of providing part of the instream flow needs in the Big Bend reach of the Platte. The merits of this option depend on hydrology, value judgements regarding property rights and entitlements and on the economic cost of reduced pumping. This paper addresses only the question of economic cost.

A number of molecular genetic maps of the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] have been developed over the past 10 yr. These maps are primarily based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers. Parental surveys have shown that most RFLP loci have only two known alleles. However, because the soybean is an ancient polyploid, RFLP probes typically hybridize and map to more than one position in the genome. Thus, the polymorphic potential of an RFLP probe is primarily a function of the frequency of the two alleles at each locus the probe detects. In contrast, simple sequence repeat (SSR) …

Dairy Options Pilot Program, Rama S. Valluru
Cornhusker Economics
Dairy producers are more prone to production, marketing and financial risks than ever because they have few marketing alternatives, despite the highly volatile milk prices. Considering the precarious situation that dairy farmers face, USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA) has launched a novel costshare program in select states and counties across the nation that allows farmers to try and use futures and options markets. The program, Dairy Options Pilot Program (DOPP), at a cost of $11 million is a first of its kind. Launched under the 1996 FAIR Act, it was first announced on June 8, 1998 by the Secretary of …

Culturing a population of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for many generations under conditions to which it is not optimally adapted selects for fitter genetic variants. This simple experimental design provides a tractable model of adaptive evolution under natural selection. Beginning with a clonal, founding population, independently evolved strains were obtained from three independent cultures after continuous aerobic growth in glucose-limited chemostats for more than 250 generations. DNA microarrays were used to compare genome-wide patterns of gene expression in the evolved strains and the parental strain. Several hundred genes were found to have significantly altered expression in the evolved strains. Many of these …

Celastrina Idella (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae): A New Butterfly Species From The Atlantic Coastal Plain, David M. Wright, Harry Pavulaan
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
A new species of Polyommatinae, Celastrina idella, is described from the sandy Atlantic coastal plain of the eastern United States. It is presently known to occur from southern New Jersey through Georgia. Celastrina idella larvae have been recorded from four species of Ilex (holly). Celastrina idella is distinguished from sympatric C. ladon and C. neglecta by differences in larval host, flight period, pupal diapause, and adult size and wing characters. In the New Jersey pine barrens the butterfly is univoltine and flies in the spring between the flights of its sympatric congeners.
Valuing A Replacement Heifer, Richard Clark
Valuing A Replacement Heifer, Richard Clark
Cornhusker Economics
Fall is an important time for Nebraska beef cattle producers. Decisions are often made about retaining or acquiring replacement females for either sustaining or growing the beef cow herd. Just how many bred heifers or heifer calves should be retained or acquired will depend on the replacement rate for the mature cows and whether or not the producer is planning to change total cow numbers. An important aspect of the retention (or buying) decision is the value of a bred female.
