Characterization Of Various Corrosion-Resistant Rebars Embedded In Concrete After 20 Years Of Exposure, Samantha Mavrak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In aggressive marine environments, the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is primarily caused by chloride-induced corrosion of embedded carbon steel reinforcement, resulting in concrete cracking, spalling, and costly maintenance or premature replacement. Corrosion-resistant reinforcement has been developed to mitigate these effects; however, long-term field performance data remain limited. This study evaluates the long-term corrosion performance of several corrosion-resistant rebars embedded in simulated deck slab concrete specimens following approximately 20 years of chloride exposure.

Concrete specimens containing 304SS, 316SS, and 2304 duplex SS, two types of clad reinforcement (316SS with carbon steel core), and an intermediate alloy with 12% Cr were …

Development Of A Lead-Lithium Eutectic Magnetohydrodynamic Loop For Corrosion Studies, Xavier S. Angus

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Lead–lithium eutectic (LLE) is a leading candidate coolant and tritium breeder for fusion reactor blankets due to its favorable heat transfer properties and high tritium breeding ratio. However, LLE is highly corrosive and, in the strong magnetic fields present in fusion reactors, experiences magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects that can produce significant pressure drops and flow instabilities. Understanding corrosion behavior in these extreme environments is essential for assessing the viability of LLE blanket systems. This work presents the design and construction of a forced-convection LLE corrosion loop to study corrosion behavior at temperatures up to 425 °C and flow velocities up to …

Steel Corrosion In Underground Transportation Infrastructure, Amr M. Morsy, Islam A. Ebo, Shiv K. Janardhanan

Mineta Transportation Institute

Corrosion of buried steel, a critical component of American transportation infrastructure, remains one of the most insidious challenges due to the uncertainty associated with its estimates. Predicting when and how this corrosion happens is very difficult. This uncertainty grows exponentially with time, making corrosion estimation in the long term even more challenging, especially with buried steel and steel structures, which cannot even be monitored visually. While significant advancement has been made to understand the effect of the various corrosion parameters on soil corrosivity, there is a lack of a comprehensive understanding of how these factors collectively contribute to corrosion as …

Analysis Of The Mechanical, Microstructural, And Biocompatibility Properties Of Novel Magnesium-Based Hybrid Nanocomposite Materials For Orthopedic Applications, Thomas H. Mcgehee

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Bone fractures and complete joint replacements are becoming more common, primarily because of accidents and age-related issues. Conventional solutions to treat these orthopedic injuries involve inert metal alloys to correct bone fractures until the healing process is complete, where a secondary revision surgery is then required to remove the implant. Issues regularly associated with these solutions include stress shielding, bone resorption, infection, inflammation, and implant loosening. Magnesium (Mg)-based nanocomposites offer promising potential as an alternative to commonly used metal alloys because of their favorable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. A particularly advantageous property of Mg is its natural biodegradation in vivo, …

Experimental Study Of Novel Bcsa Scc Repair Materials And Implications On Corrosion In Bcsa Concrete Structures, Elizabeth S.M. Poblete

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Some current building codes for structural concrete allow the use of alternative cement concrete if their structural, durability, and fire performance can be shown to be comparable to portland cement (PC) concrete. One such alternative cement, belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement, is a promising standalone replacement for portland cement given its lower global warming potential (GWP), fast setting time, and high early age compressive strength. These properties also make it an ideal repair material. But repair materials often need to be highly flowable and easy to consolidate and their performance when used to repair PC concrete structures must be understood. …

Development Of A Probabilistic Interaction Rule And Failure Pressure Model For Pipelines With A Colony Of Corrosion Defects, Kiswendsida J. Kere

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The interaction effect originating from a defect colony can pose a higher pipeline failure risk than the case when such possible interaction is not considered. Recognizing the limitations in existing models that can lead to inaccurate pipeline integrity assessment, the goal of this study is to develop a probabilistic interaction rule and predictive burst failure pressure model for pipelines with a colony of corrosion defects. First, a comprehensive database of burst failure pressure for pipes with a colony of corrosion is established that encompasses a wide range of influencing factors (e.g., spacing, defect sizes, and material properties) on the defect …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Buried structures (e.g., culverts and pipes under roadways) installed several decades ago are reaching the end of their service life. Excavation and replacement of these structures will cause disturbances to the transportation network and require significant funding. Trenchless techniques (e.g., sliplining) have been increasingly employed to rehabilitate deteriorated buried structures (e.g., corroded corrugated steel pipes). Sliplining includes inserting a new pipe (liner) into an existing deteriorated pipe and filling the gap between them with grout. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sliplining on the behavior of buried corrugated steel pipes with different degrees of corrosion …

Feasibility Of Hyperspectral Sensing For Detection Of Early Stages Of Corrosion In Structural Steel, Amrita Das, Sattar Dorafshan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The estimated global cost of steel atmospheric corrosion is 3-4% of the Gross Domestic Product, despite decades of corrosion mitigation practice. Steel, widely used for infrastructure construction, is composed primarily of iron and therefore is extremely vulnerable to atmospheric corrosion. The free iron atoms are highly reactive with water and oxygen molecules abundantly found in the atmosphere. Common non-contact in-field corrosion detection methods such as visual imaging and passive infrared thermography (IRT) use characteristics of visible corrosion compounds as the main features for corrosion detection. In this study, diffuse spectroscopy is investigated for the feasibility of corrosion detection before visual …

Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to public health, and environmental factors, including metals in drinking water distribution systems, are increasingly recognized as contributors to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Zinc orthophosphate, a common corrosion inhibitor, and copper corrosion products (CuO and Cu2O) are frequently present in drinking water systems. While each has been shown to increase ARB and ARGs individually, their combined effects remain unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the combined impact of copper corrosion products and the corrosion inhibitor zinc orthophosphate on antibiotic resistance. Two …

Experimental Evaluation Of Corrosion Of Strands And Wires To Estimate Corrosion Rate In Grout And Concrete, Dipendra Shrestha Jan 2025

Experimental Evaluation Of Corrosion Of Strands And Wires To Estimate Corrosion Rate In Grout And Concrete, Dipendra Shrestha

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Premature failure of prestressed and post-tensioned concrete structures is frequently caused by undetected corrosion of prestressing steel. Although extensive research has addressed corrosion rates in conventionally reinforced concrete, the interpretation of non-destructive parameters, such as half-cell potential (HCP) and concrete/grout resistivity, for estimating corrosion rates in prestressing steel are not adequately investigated.

This research experimentally evaluates chloride-induced corrosion of prestressing steels to establish material-specific relationships between in-situ measurable parameters and corrosion rate. Thirty-six macrocell specimens incorporating plain wires, indented wires, and seven-wire strands in structural concrete and commercial post-tensioning grout- half with pre-formed surface cracks, were subjected to accelerated cyclic …

Urotropine As A Corrosion Inhibitor In Steel Rebar: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Tyler Zadrozny

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project investigates the behavior of corrosion in rebar, a critical component in infrastructure such as roads and skyscrapers. Corrosion of rebar can lead to structural instability, visible as cracks or pitting on the surface. The primary focus is on the potential of urotropine as a corrosion inhibitor. Urotropine, known for its ability to inhibit corrosion in mild steel in acidic environments, is hypothesized to be effective in preventing corrosion on rebar. To explore this, molecular dynamics simulations using LAMMPS were conducted, modeling urotropine molecules in an acidic solution (PH = 1) interacting with iron atoms, mimicking rebar. Simulations were …
