Soft structural textiles, or softgoods, are used within the space industry for inflatable habitats, parachutes and decelerator systems. Evaluating the safety and structural integrity of these systems occurs through structural health monitoring systems (SHM), which integrate non-invasive/non-destructive testing methods to detect, diagnose, and locate damage. Strain/load monitoring of these systems is limited while utilizing traditional strain gauges as these gauges are typically stiff, operate at low temperatures, and fail when subjected to high strain that is a result of high loading classifying them as unsuitable for SHM of soft structural textiles. For this work, a capacitance based strain gauge (CSG) …

The term perceptual closure refers to the neural processes responsible for “filling-in” missing information in the visual image under highly adverse viewing conditions such as fog or camouflage. Here we used a closure task that required the participants to identify barely recognizable fragmented line-drawings of common objects. Patients with schizophrenia have been shown to perform poorly on this task. Following priming, controls and importantly patients can complete the line-drawings at greater levels of fragmentation behaviorally, suggesting an improvement in their ability to performthe task. Closure phenomena have been shown to involve a distributed network of cortical regions, notably the lateral …

Analysis Of Electric Vehicle Charging Behavior Patterns With Function Principal Component Analysis Approach, Chenxi Chen, Yang Song, Xianbiao Hu, Ivan G. Guardiola
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This manuscript focused on analyzing electric vehicles’ (EV) charging behavior patterns with a functional data analysis (FDA) approach, with the goal of providing theoretical support to the EV infrastructure planning and regulation, as well as the power grid load management. 5-year real-world charging log data from a total of 455 charging stations in Kansas City, Missouri, was used. The focuses were placed on analyzing the daily usage occupancy variability, daily energy consumption variability, and station-level usage variability. Compared with the traditional discrete-based analysis models, the proposed FDA modeling approach had unique advantages in preserving the smooth function behavior of the …

Inspection methods for satellites post-launch are currently expensive and/or dangerous. To address this, BYU, in conjunction with NASA, is designing a series of small satellites called CubeSATs. These small satellites are designed to be launched from a satellite and to visually inspect the launching body. The current satellite revision passively tumbles through space and is appropriately named the passive inspection cube satellite (PICS). The next revision actively maintains translation and rotation relative to the launching satellite and is named the translation, rotation inspection cube satellite (TRICS). One of the necessary sensors aboard this next revision is the means to detect …

Solid solution in Metal-Organic Coordination Polymers (MOCPs) is an emerging synthetic pathway for modifying chemical compositions and has been expansively investigated. It has been demonstrated to be an important tool for engineering novel functional materials that otherwise have not been synthesized via the conventional technique. Although stable solid material with variable functionalities and intriguing structural motifs could be engineered by judicious selection of multivariate metal centers and multifunctional ligands. However, solid solution featuring mixed valence in MOCP is rare. Motivated by the ability of Pb2+ to adopt range of coordination numbers (CN) and chemical environments (CE), in addition to its …

Student Works (2020-2029)
Differential diagnosis of hypertensive heart disease (HHD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is clinically challenging but important for treatment management. This study aims to phenotype HHD and HCM in 3D+time domain by using a multiparametric motion-corrected personalized modeling algorithm and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). 44 CMR data, including 12 healthy, 16 HHD and 16 HCM cases, were examined. Multiple CMR phenotype data consisting of geometric and dynamic variables were extracted globally and regionally from the models over a full cardiac cycle for comparison against the healthy models and clinical reports. Statistical classifications were used to identify the distinctive characteristics and disease …

Use Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Cfrp) Including Sheets, Rods, And Ropes In Strengthening And Repairing Long Reinforced Concrete Columns, Yasir Matloob Saeed
Dissertations and Theses
The use of FRP materials in strengthening and repairing of reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased in the past two decades. Recently, FRP materials have become one of the most used materials in rehabilitation engineering. For seismic retrofitting of RC structures, usually the process involves strengthening or repairing the vertical support elements of the buildings or bridges. Several studies focused on the use of FRP materials in strengthening and repairing RC columns. Externally bonded (EB) FRP sheets or laminates and near-surface-mounted (NSM) FRP rods have been used for enhancing the strength and ductility of RC columns. Although glass FRP (GFRP) …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the triumph of conventional computing architectures till today, there emerges a lotof computing problems that are solved poorly by them. The reason behind this are twofold: i) the computing algorithm is incompetent in solving those problems, and ii) non-ideal effects of the traditional device technologies outperform the benets of using them. Hence, extensive research eorts have been put to devise novel algorithms as well as new devices. Among them spintronic devices demonstrate better performance in traditional architectures as well as offers way better solution to a lot of new problems when bundled with unconventional computing algorithms. Fluid-Driven Fracture Initiation From Oil And Gas Wells Considering Lifetime Stresses, Andreas Michael
Fluid-Driven Fracture Initiation From Oil And Gas Wells Considering Lifetime Stresses, Andreas Michael
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Fluid-driven fracture initiation from oil and gas wells is examined in detail. The dissertation covers three subtopics: drilling, completion (stimulations), and post-blowout capping-induced fracture initiation.
Drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITFs) are located in an azimuth orthogonal to wellbore breakouts and are observed from image logs obtained during drilling operations. Fully analytical criteria for the orientation of DITFs initiating from wells in porous, permeable media are derived considering fluid infiltration from a pressurized wellbore. DITF orientation (longitudinal or transverse-to-the-wellbore) is used to constrain the magnitude of the local maximum horizontal principal stress. The range of the possible stress states is indicated on …

Nowadays, data is considered as a new life force for operations of physical systems in various domains such as manufacturing, healthcare, transportations, etc. However, the hugely generated data, which mirrors the working essence of the product life cycle, is still underutilised. Digital Twin (DT), a collective representation of active and passive captured data, is a virtual counterpart of the physical resources that could help prevent effective preventive maintenance in any applied domain. Currently, lots of research is going on about the applicability of digital twin in smart IOT based manufacturing industry 4.0 environment. Still, it lacks a formal study, which …

The paper discusses two problem, the firth, possibilities of improving the quality of the recognition algorithm based on partial precedent, by the original pre-training procedures. And second finding the optimal procedure for constructing improved results in some sense, the algorithms for calculating estimates. The peculiarity of this algorithm is that as precedents only such "anchor points" of a pattern that ensuring the following conditions are left: the distance from any point on the training set of i-th pattern to their nearest precedent is less than the distance to the nearest precedent of another pattern. This set of precedents provides unmistakable …
