Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Stemming plugs are one of the widely used accessories in surface mining operations. Stemming plugs assist conventional stemming material in gas retention and help in better fragmentation and explosive utilization. Effective use of the stemming plugs results in economic benefits and enhance the efficacy of the project. Economic and productive viability of stemming plugs have been conducted in depth by different researchers. Addition of stemming plugs to a new system requires ergonomic challenges for operators conducting drilling and blasting operation. Induction of a newer product in already established system is subject to overall positive feedback. This work investigates ergonomics of …
Propagation Of Errors Through Coning, Sculling, And Scrolling Correction Algorithms, James D. Brouk, Kyle J. Demars
Propagation Of Errors Through Coning, Sculling, And Scrolling Correction Algorithms, James D. Brouk, Kyle J. Demars
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper investigates the propagation of estimation errors through a common coning, sculling, and scrolling architecture used in modern day inertial navigation systems. Coning, sculling, and scrolling corrections often have an unaccounted-for effect on the error statistics of inertial measurements used to describe the state and uncertainty propagation for position, velocity, and attitude estimates. Through the development of an error analysis for a set of coning, sculling, and scrolling algorithms, mappings of the measurement and estimation errors through the correction term are adaptively generated. Using the developed mappings, an efficient and consistent propagation of the state and uncertainty, within the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Encoding of finite automata or state machines is critical to modern digital logic design methods for sequential circuits. Encoding is the process of assigning to every state, input value, and output value of a state machine a binary string, which is used to represent that state, input value, or output value in digital logic. Usually, one wishes to choose an encoding that, when the state machine is implemented as a digital logic circuit, will optimize some aspect of that circuit. For instance, one might wish to encode in such a way as to minimize power dissipation or silicon area. For …

Software Rejuvenation Under Persistent Attacks In Constrained Environments, Raffaele Romagnoli, Paul Griffioen, Bruce H. Krogh, Bruno Sinopoli
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Software rejuvenation has been proposed to guarantee safety of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) against cyber-attacks. Recent work has demonstrated how this method can be applied to more general control problems such as tracking control. Despite this progress, there are still limitations in applying software rejuvenation to real situations where the presence of persistent attacks and physical environment constraints exist. In this paper we address these issues and propose a secure recovery algorithm that can be deployed not only for recovery against persistent attacks but also in situations where physical environment constraints do not allow the system to tolerate any attack. The …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Drones are increasingly being utilized to deliver medical supplies, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend. Drones arrive quickly by taking more direct paths and avoiding ground-based obstructions. However, drones are not completely reliable and may also experience failures and delays. For consumer products, delivery delays are an inconvenience, but for some medical supplies, delays may be fatal. This research focuses on the drone reliability of one particular type of supply and event: automatic defibrillators for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). A modeling framework is developed to analyze drone delivery reliability with stochastic demands and meteorological conditions. Using probability distributions …

Tide-Storm Surge Interactions In Highly Altered Estuaries: How Channel Deepening Increases Surge Vulnerability, Ramin Familkhalili, Stefan A. Talke, David A. Jay
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We develop idealized analytical and numerical models to study how storm surge amplitudes vary within frictional, weakly convergent, nonreflective estuaries. Friction is treated using Chebyshev polynomials. Storm surge is represented as the sum of two sinusoidal components, and a third constituent represents the semidiurnal tide (D2). An empirical fit of storm surge shows that two sinusoidal components adequately represent storm surge above a baseline value (R2 = 0.97). We find that the spatial transformation of surge amplitudes depends on the depth of the estuary, and characteristics of the surge wave including time scale, amplitude, asymmetry, and surge‐tide relative phase. Analytical …

Optimization-Based Fast-Frequency Support In Low Inertia Power Systems, Ujjwol Tamrakar
Optimization-Based Fast-Frequency Support In Low Inertia Power Systems, Ujjwol Tamrakar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The future electrical energy demand will largely be met by non-synchronous renewable energy sources (RESs) in the form of photovoltaics and wind energy. The lack of inertial response from these non-synchronous, inverter-based generation in microgrids makes the system vulnerable to large rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF) and frequency excursions. This can trigger under frequency load shedding and cause cascaded outages which may ultimately lead to total blackouts. To limit the ROCOF and the frequency excursions, fast-frequency support can be provided through appropriate control of energy storage systems (ESSs). For proper deployment of such fast-frequency control strategies, accurate information regarding the inertial response of …

Tailoring The Grain Boundaries Of Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells By Molecular Engineering, Khalid Emshadi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to the attraction of fabricating highly efficient tandem solar cells, wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells have attracted substantial interest in recent years. However, polycrystalline perovskite thin-films show the existence of trap states at grain boundaries, which diminish the optoelectronic properties of the perovskite and thus remains a challenge. This research demonstrates a one-step solution-processing of the [MA0.9Cs0.1Pb(I0.6Br0.4)3] wide-bandgap perovskite using Phenylhydrazine Iodide with amino groups to successfully passivate the trap density within grain boundaries and increase the perovskite grain size. The reinforced morphology and grain boundaries treatment considerably enhanced the photovoltaic performance …

Studying The Scratching Behavior Of Nb/Nbc Nanolaminate Using Molecular Dynamics Atomistic Simulations, Md Mesbah Uddin
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The scratching behavior of a Nb/NbC ceramic-metal (cermet) nanolaminate is studied to investigate the tribological properties using molecular dynamics. Many atomistic studies have reviewed the tribological properties of nanolaminates but are limited to only either metal-metal or ceramic-ceramic nanolaminates. This study aims to address how varying parameters such as metal-ceramic thickness ratio, indenter size, and scratching depth affect the tribological properties of cermet nanolaminate under a scratching load. Furthermore, the underlying deformation mechanisms are explored. To study the effect of the metal-ceramic ratio on Nb/NbC nanolaminate, molecular dynamics simulations are performed on different models varying the metal-ceramic ratio. The number …

A Four-Port Bidirectional Dc-Dc Converter For Renewable Energy System And Microgrid, Xia Du
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Renewable energy has nowadays become important in electrical power applications. Power converters play an important role in integrating these distributed energy sources. However, due to their intermittence characteristics, e.g., the output power provided by the PV and wind turbine is not stable, either an energy storage system will be used or microgrid is formed between the main grid and the sources. To integrate these renewable energy sources and manage the power flow, a multiport converter is preferred because it is highly beneficial and cost-efficiently than the traditional solution that using multiple individual power converter for each source. This thesis proposed …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Computational fluid dynamics modeling at Reynolds numbers ranging from 10 to 100 was used to characterize the performance of a new type of micromixer employing a serpentine channel with a grooved surface. The new topology exploits the overlap between the typical Dean flows present in curved channels due to the centrifugal forces experienced by the fluids, and the helical flows induced by slanted groove-ridge patterns with respect to the direction of the flow. The resulting flows are complex, with multiple vortices and saddle points, leading to enhanced mixing across the section …

This paper aims to address the DC offset rejection problem in grid synchronization algorithm. A simple approach to estimate the unknown grid frequency in the presence of DC offset is proposed for this purpose. Some of the existing techniques available in the literature use either low-pass filter or an additional integrator to eliminate the DC offset. Both approaches require an additional parameter to tune. However, tuning the additional parameter is not straightforward. Moreover, tuning the overall system can be complicated due to the presence of DC offset rejection part. The proposed approach does not require any additional parameter to tune. …
