Densification Of Ultra-Refractory Transition Metal Diboride Ceramics, William Fahrenholtz, Greg Hilmas, Ruixing Li
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The densification behavior of transition metal diboride compounds was reviewed with emphasis on ZrB2 and HfB2. These compounds are considered ultra-high temperature ceramics because they have melting temperatures above 3000°C. Densification of transition metal diborides is difficult due to their strong covalent bonding, which results in extremely high melting temperatures and low self-diffusion coefficients. In addition, oxide impurities present on the surface of powder particles promotes coarsening, which further inhibits densification. Studies prior to the 1990s predominantly used hot pressing for densification. Those reports revealed densification mechanisms and identified that oxygen impurity contents below about 0.5 wt% …

Extracellular Matrix Nanoparticles Effects On The Lung In Vivo, Brittaney E. Ritchie
Extracellular Matrix Nanoparticles Effects On The Lung In Vivo, Brittaney E. Ritchie
Theses and Dissertations
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition that causes diffuse alveolar damage and a loss of the extracellular matrix (ECM). This leads to pulmonary edema and lung function deterioration. Our lab has created decellularized porcine lung, electrosprayed ECM nanoparticles that have been previously shown to have pro-regenerative capabilities in vitro.
In this study, the ECM nanoparticle effects on young murine lungs were tested in vivo. An ECM nanoparticle suspension, previously used for the in vitro studies, was aerosolized intratracheally into the lungs using a microsprayer. 24 hours later, the lung mechanics, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and histology …

Leveraging Peer-To-Peer Energy Sharing For Resource Optimization In Mobile Social Networks, Aashish Dhungana
Theses and Dissertations
Mobile Opportunistic Networks (MSNs) enable the interaction of mobile users in the vicinity through various short-range wireless communication technologies (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi) and let them discover and exchange information directly or in ad hoc manner. Despite their promise to enable many exciting applications, limited battery capacity of mobile devices has become the biggest impediment to these appli- cations. The recent breakthroughs in the areas of wireless power transfer (WPT) and rechargeable lithium batteries promise the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing (i.e., the transfer of energy from the battery of one member of the mobile network to the battery of …
Development Of An Anatomically And Electrically Conductive Brain Phantom For Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Hamzah A. Magsood
Development Of An Anatomically And Electrically Conductive Brain Phantom For Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Hamzah A. Magsood
Theses and Dissertations
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique for diagnostics, prognostic, and treatments of various neurological diseases. However, the lack of anatomically realistic brain phantoms has made the experimental verification of stimulation strength in the form of induced electric fields/voltages in the brain tissues an impediment to developing new TMS coils, stimulators, and treatment protocols. There are significant technological, safety, and ethical limitations to test the potential TMS treatment procedures or develop enhancements and refine them on humans or animals. This work aims to bridge the gap by introducing and developing an innovative manufacturing and fabrications process to produce a …
Development Of A Single Use Device Intended To Wash Blood Clot Debris From A Stent Retriever In The Operating Room, Shane Diller
Development Of A Single Use Device Intended To Wash Blood Clot Debris From A Stent Retriever In The Operating Room, Shane Diller
Theses and Dissertations
Ischemic stroke is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgical intervention to remove the blood clot that is lodged in the blood vessels of the brain. Mechanical thrombectomy, performed by an endovascular surgeon, involves inserting a stent retriever, which deploys distally and attempts to capture the clot when dragged backwards. A complication prevalent in 50% - 67% of cases is that the blood clot is only partially removed and clings to the mesh framework of the stent. The operating surgeon must either clean the debris from the stent retriever, to be reinserted or throw the stent retriever away and open …
Reliable Navigation For Suas In Complex Indoor Environments, Andrew J. Fabian
Reliable Navigation For Suas In Complex Indoor Environments, Andrew J. Fabian
Theses and Dissertations
Indoor environments are a particular challenge for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Effective navigation through these GPS-denied environments require alternative localization systems, as well as methods of sensing and avoiding obstacles while remaining on-task. Additionally, the relatively small clearances and human presence characteristic of indoor spaces necessitates a higher level of precision and adaptability than is common in traditional UAV flight planning and execution. This research blends the optimization of individual technologies, such as state estimation and environmental sensing, with system integration and high-level operational planning.

Automatic Hip Analysis Suite, Nathan J. Veilleux
Automatic Hip Analysis Suite, Nathan J. Veilleux
Theses and Dissertations
Image recognition and computer vision are becoming increasingly useful for diagnostic and surgical planning purposes. Analyses of patient morphology can be performed much more quickly and reliably with algorithmic assistance. Traditional measurements of the hip involve visual inspection of patient radiographs or hand calculation with software assistance. In the most extreme cases, estimates of bone orientation are made via palpation of a patient’s hip. There is the possibility for significant improvements in reliability if measurements can be made in the absence of human interpretation. As many of these techniques require CT scans as a prerequisite, all of the necessary information …
Redox-Active Porous Organic Materials For Electrochemical Energy Storage Applications, K. Shamara Weeraratne
Redox-Active Porous Organic Materials For Electrochemical Energy Storage Applications, K. Shamara Weeraratne
Theses and Dissertations
As the demand for renewable energy technologies grows, so does the need for cheaper, more efficient rechargeable batteries to store the energy. While lithium-ion battery (LIBs) technology is well established, it suffers from limited lithium supplies. Furthermore, the highly toxic transition metals used in the electrodes places a huge burden on the environment. Therefore, replacing lithium with more economical sodium metal in rechargeable batteries (i.e. sodium-ion batteries, SIBs) has garnered considerable attention. Despite the fact that sodium and lithium share similar electrochemical properties, which may cause the transition from lithium to sodium easier, the larger ionic radius of Na+ …

Application Of Immobilized Palladium Monolithic Catalysts In Suzuki-Miyaura And Tsuji-Wacker Redox Reactions, Sajjad Ghobadi
Theses and Dissertations
Herein, a wholistic analysis of the viability of monolithic catalysts for redox reactions is presented. The interdisciplinary approach taken in this systematic study included preparation and investigation on Pd-on-carbon monoliths as catalysts in a flow and electrochemical settings.
The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction-focused study led to rational design, preparation, and successful application of Pd0-on-graphene oxide (GO) monolithic catalysts in flow conditions. In this study a combination of chemical reduction, freeze-casting, and vapor-phase reduction processes was applied to Pd-GO structures leading to the preparation of these monoliths. The Suzuki flow synthesis reactions revealed that the monolithic structure led to significantly improved …

Benefits, Drawbacks, And Risks Of Ai, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Books and Chapters
The specter of the impact of artificial intelligence [AI] on law and legal education casts a long and uncertain shadow. Its mix of enthusiasm and trepidation can arise from a thin idea of what the label refers to. Four components differentiate AI from even high-end automation: Big data and predictive analytics, deep learning software, cloud computing, and natural language process. From the perspective of the person on the street though, is captured as “the art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people,” centering on the ability to make independent choices. While that gloss may …

Zechipc: Time Series Interpolation Method Based On Lebesgue Sampling, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Muhammad Atif Qureshi, Matthieu Bellucci, Brian Mac Namee
Books/Book Chapters
In this paper, we present an interpolation method based on Lebesgue sampling that could help to develop systems based time series more efficiently. Our methods can transmit times series, frequently used in health monitoring, with the same level of accuracy but using much fewer data. Our method is based in Lebesgue sampling, which collects information depending on the values of the signal (e.g. the signal output is sampled when it crosses specific limits). Lebesgue sampling contains additional information about the shape of the signal in-between two sampled points. Using this information would allow generating an interpolated signal closer to the …

Predictive maintenance models attempt to identify developing issues with industrial equipment before they become critical. In this paper, we describe both supervised and unsupervised approaches to predictive maintenance for subsea valves in the oil and gas industry. The supervised approach is appropriate for valves for which a long history of operation along with manual assessments of the state of the valves exists, while the unsupervised approach is suitable to address the cold start problem when new valves, for which we do not have an operational history, come online.
For the supervised prediction problem, we attempt to distinguish between healthy and …

Cooperative Communications With Optimal Harvesting Duration For Nakagamifading Channels, Nadhir Ben Halima, Boujemaa Hatem
Cooperative Communications With Optimal Harvesting Duration For Nakagamifading Channels, Nadhir Ben Halima, Boujemaa Hatem
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we analyze the throughput of cooperative communications with wireless energy harvesting. Relay nodes harvest energy from Radio Frequency (RF) signal transmitted by the source. We derive the packet error probability as well as the throughput for Nakagami fading channels. We also suggest to enhance the throughput by choosing the value of harvesting duration. Our results are valid for both Amplify and Forward (AF) and Decode and Forward (DF) relaying.

Two Novel Radar Detectors For Spiky Sea Clutter With The Presence Of Thermal Noise And Interfering Targets, Nouh Guidoum, Faouzi Soltani, Amar Mezache
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In the context of noncoherent detection and high-resolution maritime radar system with low grazing angle, new Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) decision rules are suggested for two Compound Gaussian (CG) clutters namely: The K distribution and the Compound Inverse Gaussian (CIG) distribution, which are considered among the most appropriate models for sea clutter. The proposed decision rules are then modified to deal with the presence of thermal noise and interfering targets. The proposed detectors are investigated on the basis of synthetic data as well as real data of the IPIX radar database. The obtained results exhibit a high probability of …

Detection Of Hand Osteoarthritis From Hand Radiographs Using Convolutionalneural Networks With Transfer Learning, Kemal Üreten, Hasan Erbay, Hadi̇ Hakan Maraş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. Hand osteoarthritis leads to specific structural changes in the joints, such as asymmetric joint space narrowing and osteophytes (bone spurs). Conventional radiography has traditionally been the primary method of visualizing these structural changes and diagnosing osteoarthritis. We aimed to develop a computerized method that is capable of determining the structural changes seen in radiography of the hand and to assist practitioners in interpreting radiographic changes and diagnosing the disease. In this retrospective study, transfer-learning-based convolutional neural networks were trained on a randomly selected dataset containing 332 radiography images of hands from an …

Evaluation Of The Specific Attenuation Method For Radar-Based Quantitative Precipitation Estimation: Improvements And Practical Challenges, Bong Chul Seo, Witold F. Krajewski, Alexander Ryzhkov
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study demonstrates an implementation of the prototype quantitative precipitation R estimation algorithm using specific attenuation A for S-band polarimetric radar. The performance of R(A) algorithm is assessed, compared to the conventional algorithm using radar reflectivity Z, at multiple temporal scales. Because the factor a, defined as the net ratio of A to specific differential phase, is a key parameter of the algorithm characterized by drop size distributions (e.g., differential reflectivity Zdr dependence on Z), the estimation equations of a and a proper number of Zdr–Z samples required for a reliable a estimation are examined. Based on the dynamic estimation …

Impact Of Ambient Stable Stratification On Gravity Currents Propagating Over A Submerged Canopy, Jian Zhou, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The structure and propagation of lock-release bottom gravity currents in a linearly stratified ambient with the presence of a submerged canopy are investigated for the first time using large-eddy simulations. The canopy density (i.e. The solid volume fraction), the strength of ambient stratification and the canopy height are varied to study their respective effects on the gravity current. Both denser canopies and stronger ambient stratification tend to switch the horizontal boundary along which the current propagates from the channel bed towards the canopy top (i.e. The through-To-over flow transition). It is found that the dilution of the current density is …

The main objective of this research project is to perform some experimental procedures to inform the ability of the novel adsorbent used in this project. The chemical modification of the adsorbent is the chemical oxidation of pure powder chitosan using some specific redox pairs which are potassium dichromate and sodium bisulphite. After preparing the modified chitosan, there are some parameters that must be discussed during the adsorption process. The first parameter is the time parameter, showing experimentally the optimum time for adsorption under certain conditions by collecting values of absorbance and concentration of thymol blue adsorbed after the process from …

Thermal Atomization Due To Boiling During Droplet Impingement On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Preston Todd Emerson
Theses and Dissertations
Superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces are characterized by their extraordinary water repellent qualities. When water comes in contact with these surfaces, it beads up and rolls around. This phenomenon is due partially to surface chemistry which promotes weak adhesive forces between liquid and solid. However, micro- and nanoscale surface roughness also plays a crucial role by trapping air beneath the liquid, reducing liquid-solid contact. Many advantages of these surfaces have been identified, including drag reduction and self-cleaning properties, and the body of research regarding them has grown rapidly over the past few decades. This thesis is concerned with water droplets impinging superheated, superhydrophobic …
