Impedance Analysis Of Tissues In Nspef Treatment For Cancer Therapy, Edwin Ayobami Oshin Apr 2020

Impedance Analysis Of Tissues In Nspef Treatment For Cancer Therapy, Edwin Ayobami Oshin

Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) for cancer therapy is characterized by applications of high voltage pulses with low pulsed energy to induce non-thermal effects on tissues such as tumor ablation. It nonthermally treats tissues via electroporation. Electroporation is the increase in permeabilization of a cell membrane due to the application of high pulsed electric field. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of nsPEF on tissue by monitoring the tissue’s impedance in real-time. Potato slices (both untreated and electroporated), and tumors extracted from female BALBc mice were studied. 100ns, 1-10kV pulses were applied to the tissues using …

The Impacts Of Surface Gravity Waves On Buoyant Plume Dilution, Bruce William Husselbee Apr 2020

The Impacts Of Surface Gravity Waves On Buoyant Plume Dilution, Bruce William Husselbee

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A common practice in coastal areas is to collect, treat and discharge fluids including treated wastewater, stormwater or power plant effluent to areas of lesser impact. The discharge of these fluids, conveyed through pipelines into coastal areas, continues to be an important human health and environmental concern. The fluid discharged from these pipelines is often buoyant which allows for dilution and dispersion into these ambient waters.

Initial dilution, defined as the maximum concentration of a discharged fluid at the maximum rise in height within a buoyant plume, is critical in the consideration of the environmental impacts of a discharge into …

Nonlinearity Index Aircraft Spin Motion Analysis With Dynamic Inversion Spin Recovery Controller Design, Jeffry Walker Apr 2020

Nonlinearity Index Aircraft Spin Motion Analysis With Dynamic Inversion Spin Recovery Controller Design, Jeffry Walker

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this thesis research is to extend the previous work of Tapolcai utilizing nonlinearity index theory to quantitatively analyze nonlinearities in an aircraft model and to augment these undesirable nonlinear characteristics with feedback control. In his work Tapolcai utilized a simplified rotational three degree of freedom model to analyze spin conditions of the F-18 High Angle-of-Attack Research Vehicle model. Through the application of nonlinearity index theory, regions of severe nonlinearity were uncovered exhibiting chaotic non-periodic behavior, periodic limit cycling, and instability. If these conditions were encountered during flight, the aircraft would exhibit undesirable response characteristics thereby requiring augmented …

Exploring The Effects Of Biases In Mark-Recapture Fish Abundance Estimation With Software Simulations, Christian Yap Apr 2020

Exploring The Effects Of Biases In Mark-Recapture Fish Abundance Estimation With Software Simulations, Christian Yap

Student Scholars Day Posters

Two-sample mark-recapture sampling is a common method used to estimate fish abundance. The idea is to capture and mark fish in an initial sample. The fish are then released to mix randomly with the whole population. A second sample is obtained, and the number of marked and unmarked fish is recorded. The Chapman estimator uses the number of fish marked in the first sample, the total number of fish captured in the second sample, and the number of recaptured fish to estimate abundance. The assumptions are: 1) the population is closed, meaning no immigration/emigration, and births/deaths occur, 2) all fish …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Photovoltaic (PV) systems in residential buildings require energy storage to enhance their productivity; however, in present technology, battery storage systems (BSSs) are not the most cost-effective solutions. Comparatively, thermal storage systems (TSSs) can provide opportunities to enhance PV self-consumption while reducing life cycle costs. This paper proposes a new framework for optimal sizing design and real-time operation of energy storage systems in a residential building equipped with a PV system, heat pump (HP), thermal and electrical energy storage systems. For simultaneous optimal sizing of BSS and TSS, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to minimize daily electricity and …

Inelastic Behavior And Seismic Design Of Multistory Chevron-Braced Frames With Yielding Beams, Charles W. Roeder, Andrew D. Sen, Hayato Asada, Sara M. Ibarra, Dawn E. Lehman, Jeffrey W. Berman, Keh-Chyuan Tsai, Ching-Yi Tsai, An-Chien Wu, Kung-Juin Wang, Ruyue Liu

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Chevron or inverted V-braced frames offer numerous architectural and structural advantages, but the current special concentrically braced frame (SCBF) seismic-design requirements in the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings lead to deep, heavy chevron beams; as a result, few chevron SCBFs are built today. Recent research on single-story chevron SCBFs demonstrated that beam yielding can be advantageous at higher demand levels, and design for large, inelastic unbalanced brace-force demands may still result in acceptable seismic performance. However, this prior research did not consider the response of multistory frames. In particular, questions remain as to …

A Test Bed For Evaluating The Performance Of Iot Networks, Hope Harvey

Senior Honors Theses

The use of smaller, personal IoT networks has increased over the past several years. These devices demand a lot of resources but only have limited access. To establish and sustain a flexible network connection, 6LoWPAN with RPL protocol is commonly used. While RPL provides a low-cost solution for connection, it lacks load balancing mechanisms. Improvements in OF load balancing can be implemented to strengthen network stability. This paper proposes a test bed configuration to show the toll of frequent parent switching on 6LoWPAN. Contiki’s RPL 6LoWPAN software runs on STM32 Nucleo microcontrollers with expansion boards for this test bed. The …

The Effect Of Including Pressure Within Cracks On Failure Times Of Cylinders Subjected To Internal Air Blast Loading, Molly M. Bailey Apr 2020

The Effect Of Including Pressure Within Cracks On Failure Times Of Cylinders Subjected To Internal Air Blast Loading, Molly M. Bailey

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The importance of internal crack pressure on the extent of crack propagation is studied using both numerical and experimental results. Experimental data were obtained from shock tube testing of internally pressurized quasi-brittle hollow cylinders loaded to failure. Half of the samples were tested with an inserted membrane that transferred the shocked fluid load but prevented the fluid from entering the developing cracks. In the other cases, the membrane was removed allowing the fluid to enter the crack and assist development of fracture. A novel approach to modeling this complex structural response involving dynamic failure and fluid structure interaction is presented, …

Nanoparticle (NP)-based therapeutics promise to improve medicine in multiple areas by increasing target engagement. To date, most research has focused on cancer, aiming to increase uptake using the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Despite pre-clinical success in proof-of-concept studies, understanding of the fundamental interactions between NP and biological systems that govern outcomes remains incomplete. To realize the potential of NPs for cancer therapeutics, and to expand their application into other diseases, the roles physicochemical properties play in NP uptake must be better understood. Some investigations have been performed into the effects of size and surface charge on uptake into …

Monitoring Hydrologic Controls On Biogeochemical Process Variability In Green Infrastructure Soils, Laine Pulvermacher Apr 2020

Monitoring Hydrologic Controls On Biogeochemical Process Variability In Green Infrastructure Soils, Laine Pulvermacher

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The premise of this research was to monitor biogeochemical responses to soil moisture and soil temperature within green stormwater infrastructure soils. Adopting best management practices like green infrastructure in urban areas has the potential to remove incoming nutrients from stormwater runoff through biogeochemical processes, like plant and microbial metabolism. Biogeochemical activity has been suggested to be highly variable, so this research proposed to monitor that variability by tracking the stoichiometry of soil respiration. Additionally, an advection-diffusion-reaction model was used to disaggregate physical and biogeochemical controls on the observed soil respiration. The field data was collected to investigate the biogeochemical processes, …

Design, Assessment, And Comparison Of Antagonistic, Cable-Driven, Variable Stiffness Actuators, Ryan P. Moore

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis presents the designs and test results for two antagonistic, cable-driven, variable stiffness actuator designs. Each of these variable stiffness actuators is compact, has a large range of controllable stiffness, and limits the inertia at the robotic link it is controlling. Each design consists of a cable running through a set of three pulleys. Tension on the cable displaces a linear spring, which moves along a path designed to achieve quadratic spring behavior. One design uses a variable radius path to achieve the nonlinear elastic behavior while the other uses a fixed radius (lever) path.A quasi-static model of …

Indirect Structural Connectivity As A Biomarker For Stroke Motor Recovery, Miguel Renato Sotelo Munoz Apr 2020

Indirect Structural Connectivity As A Biomarker For Stroke Motor Recovery, Miguel Renato Sotelo Munoz

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation project, we demonstrated that diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and measures of indirect structural brain connectivity are sensitive to changes in fiber integrity and connectivity to remote regions in the brain after stroke. Our results revealed new insights into the effects local lesions have on global connectivity—in particular, the cerebellum—and how these changes in connectivity and integrity relate to motor impairment. We tested this methodology on two stroke groups—subacute and chronic—and were able to show that indirect connectivity is sensitive to differences in connectivity during stroke recovery. Our work can inform clinical methods for rehabilitating motor function in …

During the past two decades, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained great success in the field of portable devices, and currently, are penetrating to the market of vehicles. Compared to the fast development of LIBs, little efforts have been dedicated to the separator, which is one of the most important components of LIBs. Primarily, the lithium-ion battery separator has two functions, one is to prevent direct contact between the positive and negative electrodes, and the other is to provide a path for effective ionic transportation. Currently, the separator market of LIBs is dominated by polyolefin materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and …

Oxidized Phospholipid Regulation Of Chronic Inflammation In Endothelial Cells, Cameron Scott Brutsche Apr 2020

Oxidized Phospholipid Regulation Of Chronic Inflammation In Endothelial Cells, Cameron Scott Brutsche

Masters Theses

Atherosclerosis, the primary cause of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), has become one of the top causes of death in the world. As low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles become trapped and oxidized inside arterial walls, the primary oxidation products of 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine (PAPC) induce the binding of monocytes which can potentially lead to fatty plaque build ups. A fragment of one of these oxidation products, OxPAPC, has previously been studied and can act as standard for testing new phospholipids and how they affect protein expression levels. The central hypothesis of this study was that three newly studied classes of oxidized fatty …

Enhanced Carrier Transport By Transition Metal Doping In Ws2 Field Effect Transistors, Maomao Liu, Sichen Wei, Simran Shahi, Hemendra Nath Jaiswal, Paolo Paletti, Sara Fathipour, Maja Remskar, Jun Jiao, Wansik Hwang, Fei Yao, Huamin Li

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

High contact resistance is one of the primary concerns for electronic device applications of two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors. Here, we explore the enhanced carrier transport through metal–semiconductor interfaces in WS2 field effect transistors (FETs) by introducing a typical transition metal, Cu, with two different doping strategies: (i) a “generalized” Cu doping by using randomly distributed Cu atoms along the channel and (ii) a “localized” Cu doping by adapting an ultrathin Cu layer at the metal–semiconductor interface. Compared to the pristine WS2 FETs, both the generalized Cu atomic dopant and localized Cu contact decoration can provide a Schottky-to-Ohmic contact …

Theses and Dissertations

5 Fluorouracil (5FU) chemotherapy is widely used in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), and has been the first-choice chemotherapy drug for CRC for many years. However, nearly 10% of patients receiving chemotherapy die during the first 30 days of treatment. Further, it is estimated that 70% of surviving patients will develop non-specific toxicities as a result of chemotherapy treatment. We characterize these toxicities in an animal model of chemotherapy treatment and show that perturbations in the gut microbiome might be exacerbate the prolonged effects of chemotherapy. A compound that could attenuate the multiple non-selective toxicities associated with chemotherapy could …

Influence Of Coordination Environment On Catalyst Structure And Function For Co2 Hydrogenation And Ethane Partial Oxidation, Juan D. Jimenez

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we set out to establish strong structure/activity relationships for various catalytic compositions and reactions. Through in situ spectroscopic approaches, specifically DRIFTS, Raman XPS, and XAFS, we were able to discern the reactive species in CO2 hydrogenation over highly active cobalt nanostructures, the relevant ensemble size and composition of single site catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation, and active vibrational modes of mixed oxide catalysts for ethane partial oxidation (EPO).

First, we illustrate how tailoring surface orientations of Co3O4 catalysts on the nanoscale results in control over catalytic performance via the preferential formation of active …

Using Human Granulosa Cells To Select The Most Competent Embryos For Uterine Transfer In In Vitro Fertilization Cycles, Richard John Kordus Apr 2020

Using Human Granulosa Cells To Select The Most Competent Embryos For Uterine Transfer In In Vitro Fertilization Cycles, Richard John Kordus

Theses and Dissertations

Infertility is a worldwide epidemic often treated with in vitro fertilization. The success of in vitro fertilization is directly dependent upon the quality of oocytes produced during the controlled stimulation of the patient’s ovaries. There is a need for improved methods to allow embryologists to select the most viable embryos with the highest probability of leading to live births since in vitro fertilization success is far from optimal.

Oocyte and subsequent embryo quality are intimately influenced by the granulosa cells which surround the oocyte during follicular maturation. The oocytes require proper signaling and energy production form the surrounding granulosa cells …
