Wildland Fire Location Management System (Wflms), Robert G. Goldie, Jack A. Gallegos
Wildland Fire Location Management System (Wflms), Robert G. Goldie, Jack A. Gallegos
Electrical Engineering
Wildland firefighters work in complex, dangerous environments where effective communication is key to developing situational awareness. Currently, the only communication firefighters have is with Very High Frequency (VHF) 160 MHz band analog radios. While digital radio protocols could potentially allow location data and commands to be sent to field crews, the technology is primarily for voice communication. This project presents a new system that frees up voice channels and uses LoRa transceivers for robust communication. The system allows for emergency and location reports to be sent to a dispatcher via an airborne repeater. The entire system is software-defined, so it …
Development Of A State-Space Aeroelastic Model Of A Flexible T-Tail Aircraft For Flutter Analysis, Patrick S. Downs
Development Of A State-Space Aeroelastic Model Of A Flexible T-Tail Aircraft For Flutter Analysis, Patrick S. Downs
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Flutter prediction is an important part of the preliminary design process of any new aircraft. Current analysis methods include coupled fluid structure interaction codes and doublet lattice panel codes. The computation resources and time required for CFD solutions makes them unattractive for preliminary design and doublet lattice models require considerable pre and post processing to provide satisfactory results. Thus, a process for developing an analytical model to facilitate rapid design changes and the implementation of active control systems is the main motivation of this thesis. An analytical model is developed by first deriving the equations of motion of the structure …

Numerical Study On The Temperature-Dependent Viscosity Effect On The Strand Shape In Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing, Behrouz Behdani, Matthew Senter, Leah Mason, Ming-Chuan Leu, Joontaek Park
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A numerical model that incorporates temperature-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity was developed to simulate the extrusion process in extrusion-based additive manufacturing. Agreement with the experimental data was achieved by simulating a polylactic acid melt flow as a non-isothermal power law fluid using experimentally fitted parameters for polylactic acid. The model was used to investigate the temperature effect on the flow behavior, the cross-sectional area, and the uniformity of the extruded strand. OpenFOAM, an open source simulation tool based on the finite volume method, was used to perform the simulations. A computational module for solving the equations of non-isothermal multiphase flows was also …

Transferring And Regularizing Prediction For Semantic Segmentation, Yiheng Zhang, Zhaofan Qiu, Ting Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Dong Liu, Tao Mei
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Semantic segmentation often requires a large set of images with pixel-level annotations. In the view of extremely expensive expert labeling, recent research has shown that the models trained on photo-realistic synthetic data (e.g., computer games) with computer-generated annotations can be adapted to real images. Despite this progress, without constraining the prediction on real images, the models will easily overfit on synthetic data due to severe domain mismatch. In this paper, we novelly exploit the intrinsic properties of semantic segmentation to alleviate such problem for model transfer. Specifically, we present a Regularizer of Prediction Transfer (RPT) that imposes the intrinsic properties …

Fabrication Of Hard–Soft Microfluidic Devices Using Hybrid 3d Printing, Carlos Ruiz, Karteek Kadimisetty, Kun Yin, Michael G. Mauk, Hui Zhao, Changchun Liu
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Widely accessible, inexpensive, easy-to-use consumer 3D printers, such as desktop stereolithography (SLA) and fused-deposition modeling (FDM) systems are increasingly employed in prototyping and customizing miniaturized fluidic systems for diagnostics and research. However, these 3D printers are generally limited to printing parts made of only one material type, which limits the functionality of the microfluidic devices without additional assembly and bonding steps. Moreover, mating of different materials requires good sealing in such microfluidic devices. Here, we report methods to print hybrid structures comprising a hard, rigid component (clear polymethacrylate polymer) printed by a low-cost SLA printer, and where the first printed …

Optical Filter Selector, Camaryn Chambers, Joel Pitzer, Matthew Allen, Callen Schwefler
Mechanical Engineering
One of the many challenges with launching projectiles into space is predicting how the environment in space will affect the trajectory. One way to do this is to look at optical emissions, also known as airglow, which can only be seen from earth with sensitive equipment. By taking measurements of the light from the airglow, properties about the upper atmosphere can be inferred. This is important because variability in the atmosphere can cause variability in space that can affect astronauts and satellites. In order to accomplish this task, optical filters must be used to observe different bands of wavelengths of …
