Development Of Deterioration Models For Street Pavement In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Mladjan John Grujicic

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Accurate prediction of pavement deterioration is vital for an efficient and cost-effective allocation of available budgets for keeping an agency’s road networks operating at a desirable level. Currently, most cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area are using the software PAVERTM and the associated performance models to predict future conditions as they do not have available reliable prediction models. However, the problem with this type of modeling is that the models are not calibrated to local conditions. The Pavement Deterioration Prediction models that have been developed in this research will help any pavement management agencies within DFW Metroplex area to …

One of the major problems with using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) in strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures is FRP premature debonding. Anchoring FRP materials to concrete has become associated with most of the strengthening techniques. One of the anchoring techniques is using handmade anchors made from FRP materials. In previous studies, most FRP anchors were made from rolling pre-cut FRP sheets and had short embedment (mm) as they were used for flexural or shear strengthening of RC beams. In the present study, FRP anchors were made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) ropes and had long embedment to be used …

Formal Verification Of The Adversarial Robustness Property Of Deep Neural Networks Through Dimension Reduction Heuristics, Refutation-Based Abstraction, And Partitioning, Joshua Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Neural networks are tools that are often used to perform functions such as object recognition in images, speech-to-text, and general data classification. Because neural networks have been successful at approximating these functions that are difficult to explicitly write, they are seeing increased usage in fields such as autonomous driving, airplane collision avoidance systems, and other safety-critical applications. Due to the risks involved with safety-critical systems, it is important to provide guarantees about the networks performance under certain conditions. As an example, it is critically important that self driving cars with neural network based vision systems correctly identify pedestrians 100% of …

Weather prediction, wherever people live, serves as a beneficial part of everyday life. Weather in the upper portions of Earth’s atmosphere also impacts life on Earth but it is not able to be predicted as well as its terrestrial counterpart. PetitSat is a cube satellite (CubeSat) mission proposed to help remedy this issue. It will collect measurements of charged particles in the upper atmosphere called a plasma. The measurements taken by PetitSat will facilitate better prediction of upper-atmospheric weather. Prediction of when and where weather phenomenon will occur will allow avoidance of negative consequences that can result. Once such negative …

A Study In Gps-Denied Navigation Using Synthetic Aperture Radar, Colton P. Lindstrom Dec 2020

A Study In Gps-Denied Navigation Using Synthetic Aperture Radar, Colton P. Lindstrom

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In modern navigation systems, GPS is vital to accurately piloting a vehicle. This is especially true in autonomous vehicles, such as UAVs, which have no pilot. Unfortunately, GPS signals can be easily jammed or spoofed. For example, canyons and urban cities create an environment where the sky is obstructed and make GPS signals unreliable. Additionally, hostile individuals can transmit personal signals intended to block or spoof GPS signals. In these situations, it is important to find a means of navigation that doesn’t rely on GPS.

Navigating without GPS means that other types of sensors or instruments must be used to …

In this letter, a hybrid translation computation method for the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is proposed based on machine learning. The hybrid method combines both generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and artificial neural network (ANN) to replace the traditional translation procedure during the solving process of the MLFMA. Based on the data corresponding to every one of the interaction list boxes at each level, the hybrid neural network is trained. Comparing with the previous machine learning method in this field, the proposed model is more general, and with lower complexity since it inherits the accuracy of the GRNN as …

Modular Framework For Implementation And Analysis Of Recursive Filters With Considered And Neglected Parameters, Kyle J. Demars, Kari C. Ward

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops novel covariance and square-root factor formulations of a consider-neglect Kalman filter for navigation applications. The proposed filter partitions system parameters into three distinct categories: those to be estimated by the filter, those whose contribution to the system are considered without being explicitly estimated, and those with sufficiently low effect on the system such that their contribution can be neglected altogether. Discussion on appropriate selection of parameters to be considered and neglected is provided with specific attention given to descent-to-landing navigation. Monte Carlo simulations and analysis are performed to assess the performance of the developed square-root consider-neglect filter …

Laser-Based Interfacial Patterning Enables Toughening Of Cfrp/Epoxy Joints Through Bridging Of Adhesive Ligaments, Ran Tao, Xiaole Li, Arief Yudhanto, Marco Alfano, Gilles Lubineau

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ability to prevent catastrophic failures in secondary bonded CFRP adhesive joints is important for reliable automotive and aerospace structures. In a previous study, we proposed an innovative damage-tolerant interfacial design concept for adhesively bonded composite joints, which relied on the extrinsic dissipation of bridging adhesive ligaments enabled by controlling the adhesion at CFRP/epoxy interfaces. In this work, we experimentally validate this strategy by combining laser processing and mechanical testing using double cantilever beam (DCB) joints. Mechanical tests indicate that the pattern geometry, i.e., number and spacing of the areas with different adhesion, controls the formation of either single or …

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic has severely impacted lives across the globe. Respiratory disorders in COVID-19 patients are caused by lung opacities similar to viral pneumonia. A Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system for the detection of COVID-19 using chest radiographs would provide a second opinion for radiologists. For this research, we utilize publicly available datasets that have been marked by radiologists into two-classes (COVID-19 and non-COVID-19). We address the class imbalance problem associated with the training dataset by proposing a novel transfer-to-transfer learning approach, where we break a highly imbalanced training dataset into a group of balanced mini-sets and …

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are widely studied for their ability to confine light, produce sharp resonances for sensing applications and serve as avenues for lasing action with topological characteristics. Primarily, the formation of BICs in periodic photonic band gap structures are driven by symmetry incompatibility; structural manipulation or variation of incidence angle from incoming light. In this work, we report two modalities for driving the formation of BICs in terahertz metasurfaces. At normal incidence, we experimentally confirm polarization driven symmetry-protected BICs by the variation of the linear polarization state of light. In addition, we demonstrate through strong coupling …

Composite materials are strong, lightweight, and stiff making them desirable in aerospace applications. However, a practical issue arises with composites in that they behave unpredictably in bolted joints, where damage and cracks are often initiated. This research investigated a solution to correcting the problem with composite bolted joints. A novel hybrid composite material was developed, where thin stainless steel foils were placed between and in place of preimpregnated composite plies during the cure cycle to reinforce stress concentrations in bolted joints. This novel composite was compared to control samples experimentally in quasi-static monotonic loading in double shear configuration in 9-ply …

There is no shortage of methods to address messy problems. A messy problem is a system of problems with multiple stakeholders who may hold different views of what is feasible or desirable. Decision-makers in a messy problem are prone to committing an error – especially the Type III error. One of the ways to mitigate the chance of committing the error in a messy problem is to reach a group consensus. Problem Structuring Methods (PSM) are the collections of participatory modeling methods that aim to tackle a messy problem. Despite the positive reports, literature indicates some challenges and criticisms of …
