Estimation Of Contamination Source By Using Qpso With Perturbation Operator, Tian Na, Zhicheng Ji
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: An improved quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) with perturbation operator was proposed and applied to solve the convection-diffusion inverse problem of estimating time-varying contamination source. Because the contamination source is time-dependent, the inverse problems are classified into function estimation problem. To transform the inverse problem to optimization problem, the nonlinear least square method was used. Meanwhile, Tikhonov regularization was used to stablize the solution with noisy measured data. And the regularization parameter was chosen by L-curve method. The simulation results tell that QPSO with perturbation operator outperforms QPSO and PSO. Moreover, tests over different views (regularization terms, noise level, …

Signal Denoising Method Based On Atom Curve Fitting Improved Dictionary Learning, Gao Bo, Wang Jun, Gege Zhang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In signal denoising problems, using K-SVD and other classic dictionary learning algorithm can not effectively eliminate the noise impact. The method made some amendments for classical dictionary learning by applying nonlinear least squares curve fitting and particle swarm optimization. K-SVD algorithm was used to train the dictionary. Nonlinear least-squares approach was used to fit every atom in the dictionary. Particle swarm optimization method was used to solve the sparse representation of the signal. The reconstructed signal was obtained. The experimental results show that, the denoising effects of the proposed method apparently has increased compared with K-SVD and RLS-DLA.

Climate predictions indicate a strong likelihood of more frequent, intense heat events. Resource-vulnerable, low-income neighbourhood populations are likely to be strongly impacted by future climate change, especially with respect to an energy burden. In order to identify existing and new vulnerabilities to climate change, local authorities need to understand the dynamics of extreme heat events at the neighbourhood level, particularly to identify those people who are adversely affected. A new comprehensive framework is presented that integrates human and biophysical data: occupancy/behaviour, building energy use, future climate scenarios and near-building microclimate projections. The framework is used to create an urban energy …

Biofiltration Of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted At Ethanol Plants, Mitham Al-Faliti
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Ethanol is a major biofuel source of energy in the U.S. Ethanol production produces several harmful emissions from both fermentation tanks and dryers. CO2 scrubbers control the emissions from the fermentation tanks, while the emissions from the dryers are controller by regenerative thermal oxidizers. These methods are expensive to operate. A potential alternative is bio-trickling filters. Bio-trickling filters are an inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative. For this study, two parallel bio-trickling filters were operated one at 25°C called the mesophilic bio-trickling filter and one at 60°C called the thermophilic bio-trickling filter. The mesophilic bio-trickling filter simulates emissions from fermentation …

A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr.
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The need for long-distance High Frequency (HF) communications in the 3-30 MHz frequency range seemed to diminish at the end of the 20th century with the advent of space-based communications and the spread of fiber optic-connected digital networks. Renewed interest in HF has emerged as an enabler for operations in austere locations and for its ability to serve as a redundant link when space-based and terrestrial communication channels fail. Communications system designers can create a “digital twin” system to explore the operational advantages and constraints of the new capability. Existing wireless channel models can adequately simulate communication channel conditions with …

Formal Language Constraints In Deep Reinforcement Learning For Self-Driving Vehicles, Tyler Bienhoff
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In recent years, self-driving vehicles have become a holy grail technology that, once fully developed, could radically change the daily behaviors of people and enhance safety. The complexities of controlling a car in a constantly changing environment are too immense to directly program how the vehicle should behave in each specific scenario. Thus, a common technique when developing autonomous vehicles is to use reinforcement learning, where vehicles can be trained in simulated and real-world environments to make proper decisions in a wide variety of scenarios. Reinforcement learning models, however, have uncertainties in how the vehicle acts, especially in a previously …

Simulation Method Of Ultrasonic Signal Echo From Measured Liquid Level, Li Peng, Xiaolong Shen, Qian Yin
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Based on the ultrasonic wave scattering theory, a simulation method for the ultrasonic signal echo from liquid level was proposed. According to the fluid boundary-layer theory, the liquid level was divided into a four-layer structure, including liquid phase, gas phase, and liquid and gas stagnant layer. Furthermore, every phase was divided into lots of small scatters, and their scattering intensity was set on the basis of the concentration of water molecule. Thus, the echo signal was the sum of reflecting signals from all scatters. Besides, the simulated signal was compared with the real one with the same system parameter …

Mie scattering theory is often used to calculate the flux of light scattered off of small particles whose diameter is approximately the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of incident light. In many equations for the calculation of this flux, it is assumed that the area of interest is perpendicular to the ray of scattered light. This assumption does not apply to all cases such as low-cost (
