Cooperative Spectrum Sensing Using Maximum A Posteriori As A Detection Technique For Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Mohammad Abdellatif, Ahmed Tohamy, Usama Sayed Mohamed, Taha A. Khalaf, Mohamed Abdelraheem

Electrical Engineering

Over the past few years, dynamic spectrum access has been gaining an increasing attention as a solution to the spectrum scarcity problem. In this paper, a primary user detection technique based on Maximum A Posteriori estimation is proposed for dynamic spectrum access networks. In the proposed technique, a set of secondary users acting as sensing nodes send their individual decisions about the existence of the primary user to a central fusion center. The fusion center uses the received data to form a codeword then, applies the maximum a posteriori estimation rule to make a final decision regarding the presence of …

Mapping The Molecular Interface Of A Gpcr Dimer, Zhenqi Li Aug 2020

Mapping The Molecular Interface Of A Gpcr Dimer, Zhenqi Li

Theses - ALL

G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the most diverse membrane proteins in eukaryotes that transmit chemical signals to the cell. GPCRs are considered the largest family of targets for approved drugs on the market. Sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor 1 (S1P1), a widely expressed GPCR protein in many cell types, performs signal transduction function not only in the monomeric state but also in the dimeric or complex oligomeric states. However, the detail of the S1P1 assembly is still not clearly understood. Cholesterol is believed to affect S1P1 dimerization, but the details of the cholesterol-binding sites with S1P1 are not well understood. In this project, …

Cell-Adhesion Activities Responding To Nano-Dynamic Substrate, Huaiyu Shi Aug 2020

Cell-Adhesion Activities Responding To Nano-Dynamic Substrate, Huaiyu Shi

Theses - ALL

Focal adhesions are the large molecular complexes that anchor cells to the ECM, which is involved in cell spreading, migration, and proliferation. In our previous work, the study of cardiomyocyte morphological changes and myofibril remodeling, responding to the dynamic nano-topographic substrate, have been accomplished. The results showed focal adhesion experienced disassembly and reassembly in the first 12 hours. In this study, the hiPSC-CMs were seeded on the SMP substrates with the flat-to-wrinkle dynamic surface. Paxillin, vinculin, and zyxin from different layers of focal adhesive architectures were co-stained with F-actin. The fluorescent images were analyzed to investigate the details of focal …

Effects Of Surface Topography On Bacterial Biofilm Formation, Sang Won Lee Aug 2020

Effects Of Surface Topography On Bacterial Biofilm Formation, Sang Won Lee

Dissertations - ALL

Biofilms are multicellular structures with bacterial cells attached to a surface and embedded in an extracellular matrix. With high-level resistance to antimicrobial agents, biofilms are the cause of chronic infections associated with implanted medical devices such as breast implants, orthopedic devices, pace markers, and many others. Besides the prevalence, biofilm infections are associated with high mortality, presenting an urgent need for more effective controls. Several strategies such as coating with antimicrobial agents and changing chemical, physical, and biological properties of biomaterials have been attempted, but bacteria have remarkable capabilities to overcome unfavorable conditions over time and long-term biofilm control remains …

Gpu Resource Optimization And Scheduling For Shared Execution Environments, Ryan Seamus Luley Aug 2020

Gpu Resource Optimization And Scheduling For Shared Execution Environments, Ryan Seamus Luley

Dissertations - ALL

General purpose graphics processing units have become a computing workhorse for a variety of data- and compute-intensive applications, from large supercomputing systems for massive data analytics to small, mobile embedded devices for autonomous vehicles. Making effective and efficient use of these processors traditionally relies on extensive programmer expertise to design and develop kernel methods which simultaneously trade off task decomposition and resource exploitation. Often, new architecture designs force code refinements in order to continue to achieve optimal performance. At the same time, not all applications require full utilization of the system to achieve that optimal performance. In this case, the …

Solving Process Planning And Scheduling Problems Using The Concept Of Maximum Weighted Independent Set, Kai Sun Aug 2020

Solving Process Planning And Scheduling Problems Using The Concept Of Maximum Weighted Independent Set, Kai Sun

Dissertations - ALL

Process planning and scheduling (PPS) is an essential and practical topic but a very intractable problem in manufacturing systems. Many research studies use iterative methods to solve such problems; however, they cannot achieve satisfactory results in both quality and computational speed. Other studies formulate scheduling problems as a graph coloring problem (GCP) or its extensions, but these formulations are limited to certain types of scheduling problems. In this dissertation, we propose a novel approach to formulate a general type of the PPS problem with resource allocation and process planning integrated towards a typical objective, minimizing the makespan. The PPS problem …

Column Footings Strengthened With External Prestressing And External Wrapping Systems, Xingji Lu Aug 2020

Column Footings Strengthened With External Prestressing And External Wrapping Systems, Xingji Lu

Dissertations - ALL

Footing enlargement method is widely applied to strengthen bridge footings with structural deficiencies, where dimensions of footings are enlarged by adding new concrete segments. In the traditional method, connections at the contact surfaces are achieved by installing a large number of steel dowels and splicing the flexural reinforcements, which are labor-intensive and time-consuming. To address this problem, five upgraded footing enlargement systems are proposed in this dissertation:

• Circular external prestressing system (CEP);

• Circular external regular reinforcement system (CERR);

• Circular external BFRP wrapping system (CEBW);

• Circular external CFRP wrapping system (CECW);

• Circular external steel jacketing system …

Multi-Function Rf For Situational Awareness, Yang Liu Aug 2020

Multi-Function Rf For Situational Awareness, Yang Liu

Dissertations - ALL

Radio frequency (RF) communications are an integral part of many situational awareness applications. Sensing data need to be processed in a timely manner, making it imperative to have a robust and reliable RF link for information dissemination. Moreover, there is an increasing need for exploiting RF communication signals directly for sensing, leading to the notion of multi-function RF.

In the first part of this dissertation, we investigate the development of a robust Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication system suitable for airborne platforms.Three majors challenges in realizing MIMO capacity gain in airborne environment are addressed: 1) antenna blockage due largely to the …

Anti-Plane Shear Of Cylinders And Layered Systems: Cohesive Fracture And Instability, Yueming Song Aug 2020

Anti-Plane Shear Of Cylinders And Layered Systems: Cohesive Fracture And Instability, Yueming Song

Dissertations - ALL

This research examines the mechanics of mode-III cohesive fracture by defect initiation and quasi-static growth in both cylinder and layered systems. The analysis, which is exact, is based on the solution of two fundamental elasticity problems: i) a cylinder subject to an arbitrary shear on one end cap and an equilibrating torque on the other and, ii) a layer subject to arbitrary anti-plane shear traction on one surface and an equilibrating uniform traction on the other. For a particular geometry and defect configuration, these solutions are shown to lead to a pair of interfacial integral equations whose derived cohesive surface …

Kinetics Of Methyl Ketone And Levulinic Acid Oxidative Scission Over Supported Vanadium Oxide Catalysts, Ran Zhu Aug 2020

Kinetics Of Methyl Ketone And Levulinic Acid Oxidative Scission Over Supported Vanadium Oxide Catalysts, Ran Zhu

Dissertations - ALL

Levulinic acid (LA) is a platform chemical derived from lignocellulosic biomass. Among the various applications LA has in industrial commodities and specialty chemicals, we previously reported a novel pathway that converts LA to maleic anhydride (MA) in high yields through methyl a-carbon oxidative scission over supported vanadium oxide catalysts. However, the high selectivity of methyl scission during LA oxidation appears to be unexpected according to the trends observed during the analogous oxidative scission of methyl ketones (e.g., 2-butanone and 2-pentanone). The impacts of vanadium oxide structures, metal oxide substrates, and methyl ketone molecular structures on both selectivity and reactivity of …

Optimization Of Nitrate Removal From Aqueous Solution By Acid-Activated Rice Straw Supported Nano Zero-Valent Iron Using Response Surface Methodology, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Nagwa Mahmoud Al-Mansi Prof, Mohamed Amin Sadek Prof., Ahmad Wafiq Abolnasr Dr. Aug 2020

Optimization Of Nitrate Removal From Aqueous Solution By Acid-Activated Rice Straw Supported Nano Zero-Valent Iron Using Response Surface Methodology, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Nagwa Mahmoud Al-Mansi Prof, Mohamed Amin Sadek Prof., Ahmad Wafiq Abolnasr Dr.

Chemical Engineering

Rice straw is one of the most common agricultural wastes due to its large production amounts. Energy valorization of rice straw is a technology used for nitrate removal as the produced ashes used to generate the adsorbent by means of an alkali dissolution followed by acid precipitation. The novelty of the proposed process is that the production of the nano zero-valent iron supported acid-activated rice straw (AARS-nZVI) adsorbent is carried out without the energy valorization process but, through an acid activation for rice straw followed by precipitation of nZVI particles on its surface. The new adsorbent synthesis, characterization and application …

The Internet of Things (IoT) provides applications and services that would otherwise not be possible. However, the open nature of IoT makes it vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. Especially, identity spoofing attacks, where an adversary passively listens to the existing radio communications and then mimic the identity of legitimate devices to conduct malicious activities. Existing solutions employ cryptographic signatures to verify the trustworthiness of received information. In prevalent IoT, secret keys for cryptography can potentially be disclosed and disable the verification mechanism. Noncryptographic device verification is needed to ensure trustworthy IoT. In this article, we propose an enhanced deep learning framework …

Methodologies For Improvement Of Metal Fatigue Life, Ali Haghshenas Aug 2020

Methodologies For Improvement Of Metal Fatigue Life, Ali Haghshenas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A methodology is proposed to identify the onset of crack initiation that utilizes the material damping. The damping is measured using the impulse excitation technique (IET). The damping is also used to correlate fatigue life of additively manufactured (AM) specimens to their damping characteristics. Results reveal that the damping value is inversely proportional to the fatigue life of the specimens.

To detect the damage accumulation and crack initiation in metals due to cyclic loading, another methodology based on the measurement of the surface roughness parameters is introduced. Results presented reveal that the evolution of the surface roughness parameters can be …
