Efficient Estimation And Mitigation For Radio-Frequency Interference, Qiaolei Huang Jan 2019

Efficient Estimation And Mitigation For Radio-Frequency Interference, Qiaolei Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

"With rapid innovations in Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless technology, more and more consumer electronic devices around the world are now connected to the internet. In a small form factor electronic device, there are plenty of potential noise sources such as System On Chip (SoC), high speed traces, flexible cables and power converters, etc. Those noise sources can possibly introduce radio frequency interference (RFI) issues. In this dissertation, a transfer function based calculation method is proposed to estimate radio frequency interference (RFI) problems. The derived equations can clearly decompose the RFI problem into two parts: the noise source and …

Dynamic Impact Induced By Tornadoes Through Simulations Based On Two-Way Wind-Structure Interactions, Tiantian Li Jan 2019

Dynamic Impact Induced By Tornadoes Through Simulations Based On Two-Way Wind-Structure Interactions, Tiantian Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"Tornadoes have become a significant cause of property damage, injuries and life losses. Investigations of tornadoes indicate that most fatalities were caused by building failure. For example, in the Joplin, MO tornado of 22 May 2011, 161 people were killed, and 84% fatalities were related to building failure. Therefore, it is imperative to develop science-based tornado-resistant building codes, in order to provide a better level of occupant protection from tornadoes and to minimize the tornado-induced damage. This requires in-depth understanding of the wind characteristics of tornadoes and their wind effects on civil structures, based on which design tornadic wind loading …

Nanomorphology Dependent Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Aerogels, Chandana Mandal Jan 2019

Nanomorphology Dependent Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Aerogels, Chandana Mandal

Doctoral Dissertations

"Aerogels are very low density, light weight open pore materials. A hypothesis that is under intense current investigation by the scientific community states that the mechanical properties of nanostructured polymers depend on their nanomorphology. Aerogels are nanostructured ultra-lightweight nanoporous materials with skeletal frameworks that can display a wide range of nanomorphologies. Thereby aerogels comprise a suitable platform for testing not only that hypothesis but also a wide range of other properties such as light scattering for applications, for example, in thermally insulating windows.

To study the mechanical properties of nanostructured matter as a function of nanomorphology, various shape-memory polyurethane aerogels …

The process is time efficient as solvent-exchange through powders is fast, and energy efficient as it bypasses drying with supercritical fluids. The final ceramic objects were chemically pure, sturdy, with compressive moduli at 37 ±7 MPa and 59 ± 7 MPa, and thermal conductivities …

Polyurea Aerogels: From Nanoscopic To Macroscopic Properties, Tahereh Taghvaee Jan 2019

Polyurea Aerogels: From Nanoscopic To Macroscopic Properties, Tahereh Taghvaee

Doctoral Dissertations

"The morphology of a material is intrinsically a qualitative property and in order to relate nanomorphology to synthetic conditions, it is necessary to express nano/micro-structure quantitatively. In this context, polyurea aerogels were chosen as a model system with demonstrated potential for rich nanomorphology and being guided by a statistical Design-of-Experiments model, a large array of materials (208) with identical chemical composition, but quite different nanostructures were prepared. By reflecting upon the SEM images, it was realized that our first pre-verbal impression about a nanostructure is related to its openness and texture; the former is quantified by porosity (Π), and the …

Multiscale Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Cell Population In Tissue Architecture And Drug Delivery Nanoparticles, Mohammad Aminul Islam Jan 2019

Multiscale Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Cell Population In Tissue Architecture And Drug Delivery Nanoparticles, Mohammad Aminul Islam

Doctoral Dissertations

"Multiscale nature of a biological system span at many order of magnitudes in time and space. Molecular interaction at lower scale is connected with the higher scale behavior of tissue or organism. Integrating the dynamics and information at different time and space can give a fundamental physiological understanding of the higher level phenomena. But complex features, functions, interconnectivity between different scales and lack of information on the fundamental physiological property make the model difficult and computationally challenging. The multiscale modeling approach can bridge the gap between different scale by a systemic integration of the complex dynamic behavior.

Here, the focus …

A Systems And Cost Analysis Of Human Rated Mars Entry, Descent, And Landing Vehicles, Paul Daniel Friz Jan 2019

A Systems And Cost Analysis Of Human Rated Mars Entry, Descent, And Landing Vehicles, Paul Daniel Friz

Doctoral Dissertations

"Cost is one of the biggest obstacles to sending humans to Mars. However, spacecraft costs are typically not taken into consideration until after the preliminary vehicle and mission concepts have been designed. Once costs have been estimated, managers and project teams often lack confidence that the final cost of the mission will match the preliminary estimates. The present work provides a robust methodology for using cost as a valid metric early in the design phase of future human Mars Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) vehicles. This is done in three parts. First, state of the art parametric costing methods are …

Multi-Body Dynamic And Finite Element Modeling Of Ultra-Large Dump Truck - Haul Road Interactions For Machine Health And Haul Road Structural Integrity, Bruno Ayaga Kansake Jan 2019

Multi-Body Dynamic And Finite Element Modeling Of Ultra-Large Dump Truck - Haul Road Interactions For Machine Health And Haul Road Structural Integrity, Bruno Ayaga Kansake

Doctoral Dissertations

"Haul truck capacities have increased due to their economies of scale in large-scale surface mine production systems. Ultra-large trucks impose high dynamic loads on haul roads. The dynamic loads are exacerbated by road surface roughness and truck over-loading. The dynamic forces also subject trucks to high torsional stresses, which affect truck health. Current haul road response models are 2D and use static truckloads for low capacity trucks. Existing 3D models consider the road as a two-layer system. No models capture the truck dynamic effects on haul roads and predict strut pressures during haulage.

Lagrangian mechanics was used to formulate the …

"Homogeneous nucleation during solidification in Al (fcc), Fe (bcc) and Mg (hcp) is studied by million-atom molecular dynamics (MD) utilizing the second nearest neighbor modified embedded atom method (2NN-MEAM) potentials. Spontaneous homogenous nucleation from the melt was produced without any influence of pressure, free surface effects and impurities. We also study the effect on the simulation size on homogenous nucleation and the heterogeneity in homogenous nucleation. The heterogeneity in homogenous nucleation originates from the twins, grain boundaries and short range order in the liquid during the initial stages of solidification.

To study the solid-liquid coexistence in binary Al alloys, interatomic …

Use Of Wicking Geotextile To Dehydrate Road Embankments, Chuang Lin Jan 2019

Use Of Wicking Geotextile To Dehydrate Road Embankments, Chuang Lin

Doctoral Dissertations

“Excess water within a pavement structure is the major cause of pavement deteriorations. A roadway is often constructed with soils compacted at the optimum water contents to achieve the best performance. After construction, the soil water content variation is controlled by the ambient environment. The base course aggregate is very sensitive to water content variations. Unfortunately, conventional drainage system can only drain gravity water, but not capillary water, and it cannot work under unsaturated conditions. Consequently, no matter how well the road is constructed, the water content is expected to increase with time and the excess water will inevitably accelerate …
