Introduction For The Special Issue On Beyond The Hypes Of Geospatial Big Data: Theories, Methods, Analytics, And Applications, Qianxing Wang, Allison Kealy, Shengjie Zhai

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

We live in the era of ‘Big Data’. In particular, Geospatial data, whether captured through remote sensors (e.g., satellite imagery) or generated from large-scale simulations (e.g., climate change models) have always been significantly large in size. Over the last decade however, advances in instrumentation and computation has seen the volume, variety, velocity, and veracity of this data increase exponentially. Of the 2.5 quintillion (1018) bytes of data that are generated on a daily basis across the globe, a large portion (arguably as much as 80%) is found to be geo-referenced. Therefore, this special issue is dedicated to the innovative theories, …

A Graph-Based Reinforcement Learning Method With Converged State Exploration And Exploitation, Han Li, Tianding Chen, Hualiang Teng, Yingtao Jiang

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

In any classical value-based reinforcement learning method, an agent, despite of its continuous interactions with the environment, is yet unable to quickly generate a complete and independent description of the entire environment, leaving the learning method to struggle with a difficult dilemma of choosing between the two tasks, namely exploration and exploitation. This problem becomes more pronounced when the agent has to deal with a dynamic environment, of which the configuration and/or parameters are constantly changing. In this paper, this problem is approached by first mapping a reinforcement learning scheme to a directed graph, and the set that contains all …

Infection Control In Total Knee Replacement Prosthesis Using Nitric Oxide Releasing Biomaterials, Ashley Widing Jan 2019

Infection Control In Total Knee Replacement Prosthesis Using Nitric Oxide Releasing Biomaterials, Ashley Widing

Master's Theses

Replacing a weight-bearing joint is accompanied by long procedures, even longer recovery times, and intensive monitoring. This burden increases after infection; a complication requiring revision surgeries and therefore extensive additional recovery time. Infection can present itself at any time during the process, making it hard to predict. Currently, a two-part revision surgery is completed by removing all infected tissue and implanting an antibiotic spacer. The spacer fills the joint gap and is removed prior to the revision total knee replacement. A revision total knee replacement follows the same procedure as the initial surgery. Not only is this detrimental to patient …

Hydrocarbon reforming is one of the conventional methods to convert natural gas into hydrogen. While considering the difficulty in storage and transportation of hydrogen, we can utilize the supporting materials on the anode side of SOFCs as catalyst to generate hydrogen via hydrocarbon reforming process and pour the hydrogen as fuel into the SOFC system. Ni/YSZ is …

Scheduling For Cooperative Energy Harvesting Sensor Networks, Ahmed Ammar Jan 2019

Scheduling For Cooperative Energy Harvesting Sensor Networks, Ahmed Ammar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In cooperative communication networks, the source node transmits its data to the destination either directly or cooperatively with a cooperating node. When using energy harvesting technology, where nodes collect their energy from the environment, the energy availability at the nodes becomes unpredictable due to the stochastic nature of energy harvesting processes. As a result, when the source has a transmission, it cannot immediately transmit its data cooperatively with the cooperating node. It first needs to determine whether the cooperating node has sufficient energy to forward its transmission or not. Otherwise, its transmitted data may get lost. Therefore, when using energy …

Low-Power Reconfigurable Sensing Circuitry For The Internet-Of-Things Paradigm, Alexander Dilello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With ubiquitous wireless communication via Wi-Fi and nascent 5th Generation mobile communications, more devices -- both smart and traditionally "dumb" -- will be interconnected than ever before. This burgeoning trend is referred to as the Internet-of-Things. These new sensing opportunities place a larger burden on the underlying circuitry that must operate on finite battery power and/or within energy-constrained environments. New developments of low-power reconfigurable analog sensing platforms like field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs) present an attractive sensing solution by processing data in the analog domain while staying flexible in design. This work addresses some of the contemporary challenges of low-power wireless …

The Impact Of Permeability Heterogeneity On Liquid Recovery From Gas Condensate Reservoir, Bashayer Alsanea Jan 2019

The Impact Of Permeability Heterogeneity On Liquid Recovery From Gas Condensate Reservoir, Bashayer Alsanea

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In gas condensate reservoirs, when reservoir pressure drops below dew point pressure as production takes place at the surface, hydrocarbon liquids begin to form. The volume of the liquid formed in the reservoir increases as the reservoir pressure declines below dew point pressure. In most gas condensate reservoirs, the liquid saturation in the formation does not reach to the critical level for liquid flow to occur. Therefore, the liquid formed as result of the pressure decline becomes trapped in the formation. The formation of the liquid in the reservoir causes the produced gas composition to change continuously leading to lower …

Dynamic Discrepancy Reduced Order Modeling For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Over Cobalt-Based Catalyst, Jose Miguel Bohorquez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Advances in carbon capture techniques and demands in alternative fuel sources have increased over the past couple of decades. The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) provides a viable way to produce hydrocarbons from natural gas, coal, CO2, or biomass. However, current comprehensive models for FTS encompass large number of reacting species, readsorption and conversion of primary products, surface intermediates, and coverage-dependent reaction rates. To accurately predict the products obtained through the process a reduced order model has been developed. By reducing the number of parameters of an existing comprehensive model, uncertainty is introduced. The uncertainty can be quantified by using …

An Empirical Analysis Of An Algorithm For The Budgeted Maximum Vertex Cover Problem In Trees, Mujidat Abisola Adeyemo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Covering problems are commonly studied in fields such as mathematics, computer science, and engineering. They are also applicable in the real world, e.g., given a city, can we build base-stations such that there is network availability everywhere in the city. However, in the real world, there are usually constraints such as cost and resources. The Budgeted Maximum Vertex Cover is a generalization of covering problems. It models situations with constraints. In this thesis, we empirically analyze an algorithm for the problem of finding the Budgeted Maximum Vertex Cover in undirected trees (BMVCT). The BMVCT problem is defined as follows: Given …

Enabling Robust State Estimation Through Covariance Adaptation, Ryan Magnum Watson Jan 2019

Enabling Robust State Estimation Through Covariance Adaptation, Ryan Magnum Watson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several robust state estimation frameworks have been proposed over the previous decades. Underpinning all of these robust frameworks is one dubious assumption. Specifically, the assumption that an accurate a priori measurement uncertainty model can be provided. As systems become more autonomous, this assumption becomes less valid (i.e., as systems start operating in novel environments, there is no guarantee that the assumed a priori measurement uncertainty model characterizes the sensors current observation uncertainty).

In an attempt to relax this assumption, a novel robust state estimation framework is proposed. The proposed framework enables robust state estimation through the iterative adaptation of the …

Direct Determination Of The Dynamic Elastic Modulus And Poisson's Ratio Of Timoshenko Prisms And Rods, Guadalupe Leon Jan 2019

Adenovirus Co-Opts Neutrophilic Inflammation In Order To Enhance Entry Into Epithelial Cells, James Matthew Readler

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Human adenoviruses (AdV) are double-stranded DNA viruses that can cause a range of diseases. While AdV respiratory infections are often mild and self-limited, severe manifestations such as fulminant pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are not uncommon. In order to identify potential modalities to treat AdV infections and potentially enhance the effectiveness of AdV vector delivery, a thorough mechanistic understanding of how AdV enters host cells is needed. Previous studies have revealed polarized epithelia, one of the primary targets for AdV respiratory infections, are highly resistant to AdV entry from the apical (luminal) surface. However, upon exposure to interleukin …
