Energy Analysis For Process Parameter Prediction Of Direct Energy Deposition Metal Additive Manufacturing, Daniel John Pulscher
Energy Analysis For Process Parameter Prediction Of Direct Energy Deposition Metal Additive Manufacturing, Daniel John Pulscher
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Metal Additive Manufacturing with the Direct Energy Deposition (DED) process allows for rapid prototyping and low-volume custom manufacturing of complex geometries at a lower cost than traditional manufacturing methods. Direct energy deposition is a complex process having many inter-related process parameters that effect the overall quality and mechanical properties of the build. When new powder feedstocks are used, calibrating these process parameters is typically done empirically in trials that can contain more than a hundred different combinations of parameters. This time-consuming process can be reduced by performing an analytical analysis on how the energy from the laser transfers into the …

In order to study the intensity of chemical weathering during the formation of sedimentary strata in the site profile, the evolution of climatic environment in the region where the site profile is located was revealed. The rubidium (Rb) and strontium (Sr) values in the rubidium (Rb) and strontium (Sr) were tested and analysed. The Rb/Sr ratio has become an ideal alternative indicator in the study of regional environmental evolution. The Rb value in the strata section of Zhongba site is low, and the average value (calculated based on 202 sample values) is only 80 g/g. The Sr value was higher, …

A Promising Modification Of Pt Surfaces With Cnts For Decreasing Poisoning Impact In Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr., Yaser M. Asal Mr, Aya A. Khalifa Ms.
Chemical Engineering
Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are clean energy sources that have many applications due to the high energy density of methanol as a fuel. However, this type of fuel cells (FCs) has limitations that are preventing it from being commercialized. One such limitation is the adsorption of intermediates such as CO into the surface of the Platinum (Pt) catalyst during methanol oxidation (MO) which deactivates its active sites, where the reaction is taking place, and leads to poisoning of the electrode over the long term. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been introduced to the Pt-modified glassy carbon …

Enhanced Electro-Oxidation Of Methanol At Pt-Au Nanocatalyst For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr., Yaser M. Asal Mr, Ahmad M. Mohammad Prof
Chemical Engineering
In this investigation, a Pt-Au nanocatalyst prepared by the coelectrodeposition of Pt (PtNPs) and Au (AuNPs) nanoparticles is assembled onto a glassy carbon (GC) electrode for efficient methanol oxidation (MO). Several molar ratios between PtNPs and AuNPs have been used and the corresponding catalytic activity towards MO is tracked. The Pt1:Au1 catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity (5 times higher oxidation peak current (Ip) and a 126 mV negative shift in the onset potential (Eonset) toward MO). The catalyst’s morphology, composition and activity are investigated and the ehancement mechanism is recognized.

A Simple And Effective Way To Overcome Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Of Platinum Surfaces In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr., Yaser M. Asal Mr, Sohair A. Darwish Ms
Chemical Engineering
A glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), Pt/MWCNTs-GC, has been introduced for formic acid electro-oxidation (FAO). A similar loading of PtNPs has been conserved for a proper comparison between the Pt/MWCNTs-GC and the unmodified Pt/GC electrodes. The modification with MWCNTs could enhance the loading of PtNPs onto the GC electrode in a way that minimizes its agglomeration and increases its dispersion in the CNTs network. This not only increases the surface area exposed to the reaction but also interrupts the contiguity of the Pt active sites minimizing the adsorption of the poisoning …

Sustenance of the growing world population calls for increased agricultural production. However, this will have to be done while forecasts of water withdrawals on a global scale predict sharp increases in future demand to meet human needs. The inadequacy of irrigation water supplies has led to the need to consider deficit irrigation (DI) as a water saving strategy. DI is a deliberate under-application of water to growing crops.
In this study we carried out an economic analysis of DI in sugarcane farming with an aim of developing an understanding of the economic impact of various irrigation water management strategies. The …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
This study involved development of a computer program to determine optimal design variables for in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) sites to meet site-wide remediation objectives with minimum life-cycle remediation cost while taking uncertainty in site characterization data and model predictions into consideration. A physically-based ISCO performance model computes field-scale DNAPL dissolution, instantaneous reaction of oxidant with contaminant and with readily oxidizable natural oxidant demand (NOD), second-order kinetic reactions for slowly oxidizable NOD, and time to reach ISCO termination criteria. Remediation cost is computed by coupling the performance model with a cost module. ISCO termination …

Hybrid Localization: A Low Cost, Low Complexity Approach Based On Wi-Fi And Odometry, Letizia Moro, Hani Mehrpouyan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Localization in indoor environments is essential to further support automation in a wide array of scenarios. Moreover, direction-of-arrival knowledge is essential to supporting high speed millimeter-wave (mmWave) links in indoor environments, since most mmWave links are of a line-of-sight nature to combat the high pathloss in this band. Accurate wireless localization in indoor environments, however, has proved a challenging task due to multi-path fading. Additionally, due to the effects of multi-path fading, methods such as trilateration alone do not result in accurate localization. As such, in this paper we propose to combine the knowledge of wireless localization methods with that …

Conceptual Groundwater Remedial Alternatives At Coal Combustion Residuals Sites†, Herwig Goldemund, Jeffrey M. Ahrens
Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive
Groundwater below many basins that have been used to store coal combustion residuals (CCRs) may have concentrations of certain inorganic constituents in excess of applicable regulatory standards. Given that many inorganic CCR constituents are also naturally occurring in the aquifer matrix, their detection may not always be indicative of a release from the CCR unit. Inorganics may be present at elevated levels in groundwater due to natural or background conditions, or due to changes to the aquifer geochemistry resulting from the presence of the CCR basin, which then mobilizes these naturally occurring constituents beneath the CCR unit. Care must be …
