This paper presents an innovative design of an energy harvesting shock absorber using cable transmission called Cable-Dynamics Energy Harvesting Shock Absorber (CD-EHSA). It includes the design, modelling, bench experiments, and road tests results. Experimental tests are carried out with the CD-EHSA system in a MTS 835 machine, in order to analyze its behavior and validate the computational model of the CD-EHSA with the tests carried out on the actual component. Abstract: In wireless sensor networks, the adversary can inject false reports from compromised nodes. Previous security designs cannot detect faked reports that are forged coordinately by a group of compromised nodes. Furthermore, in sparse areas, some events failed to be reported to sink. This paper proposes a position based filtering scheme (PFS). It derives the optimal coverage degree ω, and the nodes are deployed accordingly. Abstract: A multi-traveling salesman model with time window is established, and two objective functions for the number of traveling salesmen and the sum of travel time are designed. A multi - chromosome coding method is designed to develop complex mutation operator tree, which overcomes the problem of large searching space of traditional genetic algorithms. Crumb rubber surface activation and pretreatment are considered as one of the promising newly introduced methods for asphalt rubber production. Reacted and Activated Rubber (RAR) is an elastomeric asphalt extender produced by the hot blending and activation of crumb rubber with asphalt and Activated Mineral Binder Stabilizer (AMBS). Besides RAR ability in enhancing the performance of asphaltic mixtures, its dry granulate industrial form enabled its addition directly into the mixture utilizing pugmill or the dryer drum with very minimal to no modification required on the plant level.

An aging liquid filling system in contact with highly corrosive materials required replacement to protect personnel and surrounding equipment. The current system was investigated to identify areas where efficiency, safety, and productivity could be improved. Several competing solutions, including fillers and bulk chemical storage, were determined along with the corresponding economic and safety studies. The completed study provides information for filler and storage options and provides the necessary legwork for purchase of a replacement system.

In this research, the modeling, design, fabrication, and application of ECIS sensors in environmental monitoringare studied. The ECIS sensors are able to qualify the water toxicity through measuring the cell impedance. A novel mathematical model is proposed to analyze the distribution of electric potential and current of ECIS. This mathematical model is validated by experimental data and can be used to optimize the dimension of ECIS electrodes in order to satisfy environmental monitors. Abstract: To deal with the classification problems of strawberry in production, a machine vision based strawberry weight and shape grading method was proposed. The strawberry image was segmented by thresholding to extract the fruit. The area and perimeter parameters of the fruit were then calculated and used to build the strawberry weight grading model through regression analysis. Abstract: A nonlinear circuit containing two heterogeneous magnetron memristors which based on the three-order classic Chua circuit is designed, its dimensionless fifth-order mathematical model is proposed. Due to the difference in the design of the characteristic equation of the two magnetron memristors, their positions form a symmetrical structure with respect to the capacitor. The existence of chaotic properties is proved by analyzing the stability of the system equilibrium point and Lyapunov exponents. Abstract: Aiming at the time-delay systems with uncertainty, this paper designs a third-order nonlinear feedback extended state observer (ESO) by using the coordinate transformation. The ESO can estimate both the system states and the total disturbance signal, and the nonlinear feedback has fast convergence. Abstract: By taking a wind turbine bearing as research object, the model of bearing temperature health’s degradation trend is established through using least squares surface fitting and the monitored parameters from Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA). Bearings’ degradation trend with unsteady characteristics is decomposed by modified Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition(EEMD) to obtain several relatively steady components. Many suburban streets, and specifically Bronson Circle, in the city of Kalamazoo are in poor condition and in need of repair. Along with a new pavement design and additional drainage considerations, a complete redesign of the street’s cross-section with the concept of a “Complete Street” was created. A redesign of the site, traffic, pavement, drainage, and lighting were completed to lessen the street’s impact on the environment and make it more user friendly for all modes of transportation. Western Michigan University’s Aerospace Laboratory for Plasma Experiments is home to several electric propulsion devices and is in the process of obtaining a pulsed plasma thruster in partnership with the Western Aerospace Launch Initiative. The lab currently has no way of measuring the true thrust force generated by these devices. A thrust stand has been designed specific to the micro-Newton thrust range and the constraints inherent to the facilities in which it will operate.

The process of adapting a preexisting vacuum chamber to perform thermal vacuum testing is a rare process in the testing industry. A closed vacuum system that was designed without thermal capacitance in mind will hinder the development of additional thermal system capabilities and prove difficult from a cost standpoint. Generally, building a thermal vacuum system from scratch will cost on the order of $10,000 to $100,000 depending on the system requirements regarding control and thermal capacitance within the chamber. Typical 3D printers are bound by the printing bed volume relative to the printer frame volume. A 3D printing robotic arm set upon sliding linear rails was designed and built. The arm was 3D printed with a traditional 3D printer designed using Autodesk Inventor. This product reduces printer size while increasing bed area and reduces cost with use of 3D printed parts.

This senior design project was completed at Ascension Borgess Hospital located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The mission of Ascension Borgess Hospital is to provide patient centered care. In 2018, 562 patients left the Emergency Department (ED) without being seen, which is a large safety risk for the patients and hospital. Based on this, as well as other obstacles, this project focused on meeting the mission of Ascension Borgess by improving key ED metrics that impact patient centered care.
