Design Of Microporous Membranes For The Development Of Brain-On-Chip Devices, Andre Figueroa Milla
Design Of Microporous Membranes For The Development Of Brain-On-Chip Devices, Andre Figueroa Milla
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a major global health concern that have an economic impact of $60 billion in the United States in related costs annually. Developing drugs for TBI treatment is an approach that currently faces limitations involving the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB naturally limits molecules from reaching the brain as a protective mechanism against disease, acting as a barrier during drug delivery. Understanding the BBB mechanically and chemically following a TBI could potentially assist future studies to alleviate the symptoms and long-term effects of TBI by pharmaceuticals. The Mechanobiology and Soft Materials Laboratory (MSML) …
A Bioinstrumentation Active Learning Educational Module: The Design Of A Working Temperature Sensor Using A Ntc Thermistor, Baylor Bush
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arkansas has continued to develop over the years, with more students enrolling in the program each year. Within the first biomedical engineering course, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, various topics are introduced to students, and the topic of bioinstrumentation has been one of the most complex and difficult topics for students to comprehend through just a few lectures. In order to aid students in grasping these intricate concepts, an active learning module was developed in which students can work in groups to build a simple thermistor circuit as a temperature sensor. The …

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Design, fabrication, and measurement techniques for germanium-based guided-mode resonance infrared wideband reflectors and applications of guided-mode resonance devices for sensing and measurement applications are presented. Germanium is a versatile semiconductor with physical properties similar to silicon but optical properties that make it well suited for the infrared wavelengths. It has a high refractive index and negligible absorption in the mid to far infrared spectral region that can be used to create high field confinement necessary for wideband and high quality factor devices. Fabrication of germanium devices becomes straight-forward once the physical matters of germanium’s material bonding properties and surface chemistries …

Self-Induced Back Action Actuated Nanopore Electrophoresis (Sane) Sensor For Molecular Detection And Analysis, Sai Santosh Sasank Peri
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
We fabricated a novel single molecule nanosensor by integrating a Solid-State Nanopore (SSNP) and a Double Nanohole (DNH) nanoaperture. The nanosensor employs Self-Induced Back-Action (SIBA) for optical trapping and enables SIBA-Actuated Nanopore Electrophoresis (SANE) for concurrent acquisition of bimodal optical and electrical signatures of molecular interactions. We demonstrated the potential utility of the SANE sensor by trapping and translocating 20 nm silica and gold nanoparticles. The electrical translocation time of the nanoparticles was extended by four orders of magnitude due to opposing electrical and optical forces acting on the nanoparticle, causing high frequency oscillations or bobbing in the electrical signal. …

Integration And Validation Of Power Hardware-In-The-Loop Generator Models For Deployment In A Distributed Generation Source Testbed, Jacob Sanchez
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Hardware in the Loop (HIL) is an established technology that allows for rapid prototyping of controls and verification of how physical devices respond for valid simulated systems. This involves deploying a model of a system onto a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) that can take in external inputs and outputs the state variables present in the system. An example of this could involve the control of the roll, pitch, and yaw of a plane. A simulated plane could output the current state variables of the plane to an external controller which will respond with control signals to the simulated system …

Autofluorescence To Study The Effects Of Acid Concentration On Cellular Metabolism In Vitro, Robin L. Raley
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced sunburns and their accompanying afflictions are a growing public health concern in the United States. There is a need for techniques that can accurately and non-invasively characterize the physiology of sunburned skin tissue directly after UV-damage and applying a topical skin treatment to relieve pain and promote healing. Two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) can be used to investigate metabolic processes in live cells through endogenous fluorescence of the cofactors, NADH and FAD. These methods employ the optical redox ratio of FAD/(NADH+FAD), mean NADH lifetime, and the separation of the free and bound …
How Infant Positioning Impacts Hip Motion And The Associated Implications For Babies With Hip Dysplasia, Lauren Buchele
How Infant Positioning Impacts Hip Motion And The Associated Implications For Babies With Hip Dysplasia, Lauren Buchele
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) refers to a group of disorders, ranging from slight instability (Grades 1-3) to a severe dislocation (Grade 4) of the femoral head from the acetabulum [1]. In order to treat DDH in infants, a reduction procedure and the use of a lower body harness to secure the hip joint as the bones and ligaments re-form properly is typically prescribed. The Pavlik Harness is currently the “gold-standard” orthopedic device used to place hips in proper positioning. However, little research has been reported on the biomechanical affects during use of these device types.
Although the Pavlik …

Comparing The Effects Of Fibroblast Growth Factors On Growth Rate Of Human Fibroblast Cell Lines, Tasha Repella
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Numerous studies have demonstrated the usefulness of growth factors in medium formulations to promote proliferation and viability of human fibroblasts in laboratory settings. However, due to the differences in the source and age of fibroblasts, the ability of growth factors like hFGF1 to promote proliferation varies. Equally difficult is the ability of hFGF1 to promote proliferation of diseased fibroblasts due to complexities associated with specific mitochondrial diseases. In this context, we decided to evaluate the potential for novel hyper stable growth factors super hFGF and hFGF1 (shFGF and hFGF1 respectively), to contribute to proliferation of different normal and diseased fibroblasts. …

Development Of A Model For Accelerated Fatigue Testing In Venous Valves, Olga Brazhkina
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Malfunctioning venous cause issues ranging from cosmetic to life threatening situations for millions of people in the U.S. (1). Venous valve bioprosthetics often fail due to a loss in leaflet tissue flexibility following chemical fixation of donor tissue (2). A viable solution for testing venous valves prior to and post chemical fixation is in high demand for the development of a more durable prosthetic replacement. As a result, this research aims to create a fatigue apparatus that provides a means to model the durability of venous valves. The design criteria for this project included modeling physiological conditions in an accelerated …

Modeling And Validation Of Tissue Optical Properties In The Photon Transport Regime, Katelyn Heath
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Early detection of changes in epithelial cells, such as the development of neoplastic formations seen in epithelial dysplasia, can indicate regions of the epithelial tissue that are at a high risk for cancerous formation. Using concepts from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, a Monte Carlo model was developed to predict the reflectance measured by a detector at a small source-detector separation on a microendoscope. The Monte Carlo results were then used to calculate a mathematical relationship between the reflectance and distance that can be used to determine optical properties in a tissue sample. This model was validated with liquid phantoms of specified …

Heterogeneous Reconfigurable Fabrics For In-Circuit Training And Evaluation Of Neuromorphic Architectures, Ramtin Mohammadizand
Heterogeneous Reconfigurable Fabrics For In-Circuit Training And Evaluation Of Neuromorphic Architectures, Ramtin Mohammadizand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A heterogeneous device technology reconfigurable logic fabric is proposed which leverages the cooperating advantages of distinct magnetic random access memory (MRAM)-based look-up tables (LUTs) to realize sequential logic circuits, along with conventional SRAM-based LUTs to realize combinational logic paths. The resulting Hybrid Spin/Charge FPGA (HSC-FPGA) using magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices within this topology demonstrates commensurate reductions in area and power consumption over fabrics having LUTs constructed with either individual technology alone. Herein, a hierarchical top-down design approach is used to develop the HSCFPGA starting from the configurable logic block (CLB) and slice structures down to LUT circuits and the …

Mechanical Properties Of Brittle Ceramics: Case Study Of Boron Rich Ceramics And Acropora Cervicornis Coral Skeleton, Alejandro Carrasco-Pena
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ceramics are ubiquitous in man-made and natural structures. Their mechanical properties highly depend on their composition, microstructure and level of defects in the bulk of the material, the latter affecting the integrity of the components; such is the case of boron-rich ceramics where large agglomerates create high stressed regions, or coral skeleton where porosity determines their strength against hydrodynamic forces present in the ocean tides. Therefore, studying the properties of ceramic materials using invasive and non-invasive methods helps in the understanding of the link between the properties and the performance of the structures. The aim of this research was to …
Streamflow Prediction In Ungauged Basins Located Within Data-Scarce Regions, Mohammadhossein Alipour
Streamflow Prediction In Ungauged Basins Located Within Data-Scarce Regions, Mohammadhossein Alipour
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Preservation and or restoration of riverine ecosystem requires quantification of alterations inflicted by water resources development projects. Long records of streamflow data are the first piece of information required in order to enable this analysis. Ungauged catchments located within data-scarce regions lack long records of streamflow data. In this dissertation, a multi-objective framework named Streamflow Prediction under Extreme Data-scarcity (SPED) is proposed for streamflow prediction in ungauged catchments located within large-scale regions of minimal hydrometeorologic observation. Multi-objective nature of SPED allows for balancing runoff efficiency with selection of parameter values that resemble catchment physical characteristics. Uncertain and low-resolution information are …

Variable Fluid Flow Regimes Alter Endothelial Adherens Junctions And Tight Junctions, Dilshan Ranadewa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Variable blood flow regimes influence a range of cellular properties ranging from cell orientation, shape, and permeability: all of which are dependent on endothelial cell-cell junctions. In fact, cell-cell junctions have shown to be an integral part of vascular homeostasis through the endothelium by allowing intercellular signaling and passage control through tight junctions (TJs), adherens junctions (AJs), and gap junctions (GJs). It was our objective to determine the structural response of both AJs and TJs under steady and oscillatory flow. Human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) were cultured in a parallel plate flow chamber and exposed to separate trails of …

Value-Of-Information Based Data Collection In Underwater Sensor Networks, Fahad Khan
Value-Of-Information Based Data Collection In Underwater Sensor Networks, Fahad Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Underwater sensor networks are deployed in marine environments, presenting specific challenges compared to sensor networks deployed in terrestrial settings. Among the major issues that underwater sensor networks face is communication medium limitations that result in low bandwidth and long latency. This creates problems when these networks need to transmit large amounts of data over long distances. A possible solution to address this issue is to use mobile sinks such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to offload these large quantities of data. Such mobile sinks are called data mules. Often it is the case that a sensor network is deployed to …
Fundamental Core Effects In Co-Cr-Fe-Ni Based High Entropy Alloys, Abhishek Mehta
Fundamental Core Effects In Co-Cr-Fe-Ni Based High Entropy Alloys, Abhishek Mehta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are near equiatomic multi-principal-element-alloys (MPEAs) which are different from traditional solvent-based multicomponent alloys. Based on initial work by Yeh and Co-workers, they were proposed to exhibit four "core" effects: high entropy, sluggish diffusion, lattice distortion, and cocktail effect. Present work investigates two of the four "core" effects, i.e. high entropy and sluggish diffusion effects, in Co-Cr-Fe-Ni based transition metal high entropy alloys. Solid-to-solid diffusion couple approach was adopted to investigate, these core effects. Experimental results contradicts the "high entropy" effect based on thermodynamics analysis: that the HEAs with low entropy of mixing may be thermodynamically more …

Water and energy are two of the most vital resources for the socio-economic development and sustenance of humanity on earth. Desalination of seawater has been practiced for some decades and is a well-established means of water supply. However, this process consumes large amounts of energy and the global energy supply is also faced with some challenges. In this research, multi-effect desalination (MED) has been selected due to lower cost, lower operating temperature and efficient in terms of primary energy and electricity consumption compared to other thermal desalination systems. The motivation for this research is to address thermo-economics and dynamic behavior …
Fluctuations In Walking Speeds And Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters When Walking On A Self-Paced Treadmill At Level, Incline, And Decline Slopes, Cesar Castano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On a daily basis, humans walk over a variety of terrains. Studies have shown that spatiotemporal gait parameters, such as stride length, stride frequency, stride variability, etc., change when humans walk down a decline and up an incline compared to level ground. However, these studies have been limited to using fixed speed treadmills or analyzing a small number of strides when conducted over ground. Thus, there is a need to investigate the fluctuations in spatiotemporal gait parameters of humans walking at their self-selected speed, which requires recording hundreds of strides. Here we hypothesized that subjects will walk with a slower …

Modeling Of Complex Parts For Industrial Waterjet Cleaning, Braden James
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Industrial high-pressure waterjet cleaning is common to many industries. The modeling in this paper functions inside a collaborative robotic framework for high mix, low volume processes where human robot collaboration is beneficial. Automation of pressure washing is desirable for economic and ergonomic reasons. An automated cleaning system needs path simulation and analysis to give the operator insight into the predicted cleaning performance of the system. In this paper, ablation, the removal of a substrate coating by waterjet, is modeled for robotic cleaning operations. The model is designed to work with complex parts often found in spray cleaning operations, namely parts …
Incentivizing Collaboration In A Competition, Arunesh Sinha, Michael P. Wellman
Incentivizing Collaboration In A Competition, Arunesh Sinha, Michael P. Wellman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Research and design competitions aim to promote innovation or creative production, which are often best achieved through collaboration. The nature of a competition, however, typically necessitates sorting by individual performance. This presents tradeoffs for the competition designer, between incentivizing global performance and distinguishing individual capability. We model this situation in terms of an abstract collaboration game, where individual effort also benefits neighboring agents. We propose a scoring mechanism called LSWM that rewards agents based on localized social welfare. We show that LSWM promotes global performance, in that social optima are equilibria of the mechanism. Moreover, we establish conditions under which …

Experimental And Computational Analysis Of A 3d Printed Wing Structure, Aryslan Malik
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Correct prediction of aeroelastic response is a crucial part in designing flutter or divergence free aircrafts within a designated flight envelope. The aeroelastic analysis includes specifically tailoring the design in order to prevent flutter (passive control) or eliminate it by applying input on control surfaces (active control). High-fidelity models such as coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD) can obtain full structural and aerodynamic behavior of a deformable aircraft. However, these models are so large that pose a significant challenge from the control systems design perspective. Thus, the development of an aeroelastic modeling software that can be …
Adaptive Commanding Of Control Moment Gyroscopes With Backlash, Justin G. Bourke
Adaptive Commanding Of Control Moment Gyroscopes With Backlash, Justin G. Bourke
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The existence of backlash in mechanical systems provides significant challenges when attempting to control these systems to a high degree of precision. The imperfect meshing of gear or belt teeth deteriorates the performance of position controllers and tracking of small commands, producing unacceptable steady-state offsets, increased rise and settling times. Agile spacecraft often use control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) equipped with gear trains to efficiently provide torque for the fine attitude adjustments used in docking and precision stabilization maneuvers. A theoretical examination and a practical model is developed to study the effectiveness of both proportional-integral (PI) and model referencing adaptive controllers …
