Potential Value-Added Utilization Of Wood Ash In Construction Materials, Naveen Saladi
Potential Value-Added Utilization Of Wood Ash In Construction Materials, Naveen Saladi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wood ash is a byproduct from biomass power plants. Most of the wood ash is currently being disposed of as landfilling material that causes severe economic and environmental concerns. This project focuses on the feasibility of using this wood ash in construction materials. Wood ash was found to contain varieties of mineral phases including calcium carbonate, calcium aluminate, and quartz. Based on the chemical composition, the efficacy of wood ash (i) as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), (ii) in the controlled low strength materials (CLSM) production and (iii) Portland cement production was evaluated.
Wood ash with adequate pozzolanic properties can be …
Mechanics Of Binder-Particle Interactions In Composite Battery Electrodes, Richard Johnson
Mechanics Of Binder-Particle Interactions In Composite Battery Electrodes, Richard Johnson
Theses
A study into the particle level mechanics of polymer binder and active material used in composite lithium-ion batteries (LIB) has been conducted. Silicon is highly sought after material that can be used as an active material in a composite anode. Its high theoretical capacity can result in batteries that can store more energy than current LIBs, but high volume expansion of Si during charge/discharge cycles leads to rapid capacity fade and poor cyclic life. Understanding the stress that is generated in the binder and the active material due to the volume expansion has not been fully understood. In this study …
Tomato Puree Convective Heat Transfer Simulation Using Boussinesq Approximation, Matteo Fabbri
Tomato Puree Convective Heat Transfer Simulation Using Boussinesq Approximation, Matteo Fabbri
Theses
With the advance of new technologies, the food industries are requiring systems that allow to produce the desired products with faster rates at cheaper costs. In this case, the study was initiated with the purpose to better understand what happens inside a package containing tomato puree when this is heated above 343 K in a tunnel pasteurizer. If the fluid must reach the thermal and microbiological condition of “pasteurization”, the system must guarantee that the temperature (around 343° Kelvin) is kept for a certain time allowing to pasteurize even the cooler package’s fluid-particle. The faster the system can heat the …

Evaluation Of Individual Finger Forces During Activities Of Daily Living In Healthy Individuals And Those With Hand Arthritis, Michael Riddle
Evaluation Of Individual Finger Forces During Activities Of Daily Living In Healthy Individuals And Those With Hand Arthritis, Michael Riddle
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Hand-Osteoarthritis (H-OA) leads to pain, loss of grip strength, and decreased hand function. Current treatment for H-OA involves joint protection programs (JPP) which seek to reduce joint loading during activity. The use of wearable technology to measure hand forces during activity has the potential to determine the effectiveness of JPP. The objective of this thesis was to develop and validate a method of directly measuring finger forces during the performance of activities of daily living, and then use that system to measure the envelope of hand forces during activity in healthy individuals and in patients with H-OA. A commercially-available capacitive …

There is considerable interest in nanostructured materials with interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) platforms to detect and monitor the level of various ions in numerous applications. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of IDEs based pH sensor by using hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods (NRs). A four-step deposition of ZnO seed layer followed by a hydrothermal treatment lead to the heavily ordered ZnO NRs patterns on the screen printed IDEs. The structural, chemical compositional and electrical properties of the NRs were investigated and examined by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FeSEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, an experimental research was undertaken to investigate the effect of specimen thicknesses on water absorptions and flexural strengths of wet lay-up CFRP laminates subjected to distilled water or alkaline solution immersion up to 180 days. Test results showed that the water uptake and flexural strength retention of CFRP laminates were significantly affected by the adopted specimen thickness. For the same aging time, the water uptake of CFRP laminates decreased in the early stage of immersion and increased in the later stage of immersion with the increase of specimen thickness. Meanwhile, the flexural strength retention generally increased as …

Project Excel: Web-Based Scanning Electron Microscopy For K-12 Education, L. Scott Chumbley, Connie P. Hargrave, Kristen P. Constant, Brian Hand, Thomas Andre, E. Ann Thompson
Constance P. Hargrave
Project ExCEL (Extended Classroom for Enhanced Learning) brings the capabilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) into classrooms. University and industry personnel, working together, have developed a web-based interface to allow schools to control a modern SEM. The interface allows a user control of the operating parameters of the microscope, stage movement, and chemical analysis. Such total control is not available on any other system. Since Iowa State University (ISU) pioneered the idea of remote SEM for education, researchers have learned that providing teachers access to sophisticated equipment does not ensure that it will be used. Teachers are busy, and structured …

Project Excel—Web-Based Sem For K–12 Education, L. Scott Chumbley, Kristen P. Constant, Connie P. Hargrave, Tom Andre
Constance P. Hargrave
The goal of Project ExCEL, the Extended Classroom for Enhanced Learning, is to bring the capabilities of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) into elementary and secondary classrooms. We have developed an entirely web-based interface to allow schools to control a modern SEM. The web interface allows a remote user complete control of all the operating parameters of the microscope, including stage movement and x-ray chemical analysis. Such total control currently is not available on any other system. Since pioneering the idea of remote SEM use for K-12 education in the early 1990s, we have learned that merely providing schools and teachers …
Optimization Of Window Confirguration In Buildings For Sustainable Thermal And Lighting Performance, Meseret Tesfay Kahsay
Optimization Of Window Confirguration In Buildings For Sustainable Thermal And Lighting Performance, Meseret Tesfay Kahsay
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In recent years, there is an urban architectural evolution towards significant use of glazing in high-rise buildings. Windows play a critical role in moderating the elements of the climate. Although good for outdoor viewing and daylighting, glazing has very little ability to control heat flow and solar heat gain. As a result, about 20 - 40% of the energy in a building is wasted through windows. Finding an optimal configuration of windows is a complex task due to its conflicting objectives, such as outdoor view, daylighting, and thermal comfort demands. Further buildings interact with the microclimate in a complex manner, …

Confucian Robot Ethics, Qin Zhu, Tom Williams, Ruchen Wen
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
In the literature of artificial moral agents (AMAs), most work is influenced by either deontological or utilitarian frameworks. It has also been widely acknowledged that these Western “rule-based” ethical theories have encountered both philosophical and computing challenges. To tackle these challenges, this paper explores a non-Western, role-based, Confucian approach to robot ethics. In this paper, we start by providing a short introduction to some theoretical fundamentals of Confucian ethics. Then, we discuss some very preliminary ideas for constructing a Confucian approach to robot ethics. Lastly, we briefly share a couple of empirical studies our research group has recently conducted that …
Difference Between Algorithmic Processing And The Process Of Lifeworld (Lebenswelt), Domenico Schneider
Difference Between Algorithmic Processing And The Process Of Lifeworld (Lebenswelt), Domenico Schneider
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
The following article compares the temporality of the life-world with the digital processing. The temporality of the life-world is determined to be stretched and spontaneous. The temporality of the digital is given by discrete step-by-step points of time. Most ethical issues can be traced back to a mismatch of these two ways of processing. This creates a foundation for the ethics of the digital processing. Methodologically, phenomenological considerations are merged with media-philosophical considerations in the article.

Highly Effective Geni Alloy Contact Diffusion Barrier For Bisbte Long-Term Thermal Exposure, Erdong Song, Brian S. Swartzentruber, Chowdary R. Koripella, Julio A. Martinez
Publications and Research
A GeNi alloy diffusion barrier for contacts on bismuth antimony telluride is proposed. Multiple gold contact diffusion barriers were tested at different thermal aging conditions in air and reducing atmospheres. Among all diffusion barriers, the GeNi alloy barrier shows the best performance for bulk samples with no substantial degradation of the contact resistance, no contact color change, and no change of thermoelectric properties. We observed DAu−GeNi = (9.8 ± 2.7) × 10−20 m2/s within the GeNi alloy barrier, which is 4 times smaller than DAu−BiSbTe. The presence of the initial Ge layer also proves to be effective in reducing nickel …
Modeling The Economic Machine Using Bayesian Inference And Statistical Networks, And Optimal Portfolio Construction Using Operations Research, Richard Yang
ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)
In this paper, we propose a network-based model to attempt to connect modern macroeconomic theory with real world economic observations and trends. We find that by extending macroeconomic theory with credit leveraging/deleveraging thresholds, we are able to explain economic cycles in addition to long-term growth. Furthermore, we specifically explore the growth-inflation view of the macro economy as a basis for optimal portfolio construction and efficient asset trading. Connecting our network-based macroeconomic model and our optimal portfolio construction algorithm, we create a novel macroeconomic asset-trading framework.

Responding To Some Challenges Posed By The Re-Identification Of Anonymized Personal Data, Herman T. Tavani, Frances S. Grodzinsky
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
In this paper, we examine a cluster of ethical controversies generated by the re-identification of anonymized personal data in the context of big data analytics, with particular attention to the implications for personal privacy. Our paper is organized into two main parts. Part One examines some ethical problems involving re-identification of personally identifiable information (PII) in large data sets. Part Two begins with a brief description of Moor and Weckert’s Dynamic Ethics (DE) and Nissenbaum’s Contextual Integrity (CI) Frameworks. We then investigate whether these frameworks, used together, can provide us with a more robust scheme for analyzing privacy concerns that …
A Ulysses Pact With Artificial Systems. How To Deliberately Change The Objective Spirit With Cultured Ai, Bruno Gransche
A Ulysses Pact With Artificial Systems. How To Deliberately Change The Objective Spirit With Cultured Ai, Bruno Gransche
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
The article introduces a concept of cultured technology, i.e. intelligent systems capable of interacting with humans and showing (or simulating) manners, of following customs and of socio-sensitive considerations. Such technologies might, when deployed on a large scale, influence and change the realm of human customs, traditions, standards of acceptable behavior, etc. This realm is known as the "objective spirit" (Hegel), which usually is thought of as being historically changing but not subject to deliberate human design. The article investigates the question of whether the purposeful design of interactive technologies (as cultured technologies) could enable us to shape modes of …
A Metacognitive Approach To Trust And A Case Study: Artificial Agency, Ioan Muntean
A Metacognitive Approach To Trust And A Case Study: Artificial Agency, Ioan Muntean
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
Trust is defined as a belief of a human H (`the trustor') about the ability of an agent A (the `trustee') to perform future action(s). We adopt here dispositionalism and internalism about trust: H trusts A iff A has some internal dispositions as competences. The dispositional competences of A are high-level metacognitive requirements, in the line of a naturalized virtue epistemology. (Sosa, Carter) We advance a Bayesian model of two (i) confidence in the decision and (ii) model uncertainty. To trust A, H demands A to be self-assertive about confidence and able to self-correct its own models. In the Bayesian …
