Asphalt Binder Laboratory Short-Term Aging, Hamzeh Haghshenas, Robert C. Rea May 2019

Asphalt Binder Laboratory Short-Term Aging, Hamzeh Haghshenas, Robert C. Rea

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) is widely used to simulate asphalt binder short-term aging. However, there is a general interest to improve the current short-term aging protocol especially for reducing the aging time. Besides, there are some doubts about the capability of RTFO in the simulation of aging of highly polymer modified asphalt binders which is mainly due to improper dispersion of such binders in the bottles during rotating and creeping of highly viscous binder out of the bottles during rotation. This work addresses the effect of time, temperature, airflow rate, and weight of asphalt binder on the laboratory …

Applying Internet Of Things Principles To Spacecraft, Brian K. Dixon May 2019

Applying Internet Of Things Principles To Spacecraft, Brian K. Dixon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes the adaptation of the IEEE 1451 Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) for usage in spacecraft subsystems. In the 1990s, TEDS initially were developed as a standardized method to provide metadata required for the operation of a transducer by a microcontroller or data acquisition device. The metadata provides information that identifies and documents key characteristics of the transducer, thereby facilitating plug-and-play interoperability within a system and across networks. An overarching goal of this thesis is to make a case for adapting and extending the TEDS concept as a means for self-describing critical physical components of a CubeSat nanosatellite. …

Novel Low Shear 3d Bioreactor For The Scaled Production Of High Purity Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Andrew Burns

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Human mesenchymal stem cells are an ideal candidate for stem cell therapies. They have been researched since the 1960’s and can differentiate into many desired functional cell types without undergoing teratogenesis. However, higher yields are needed for a marketable, successful stem cell therapy. To accomplish this, cells will have to be cultured to expand them to therapeutically relevant dosages for multiple patients. Bioreactor production is an ideal method to solve this problem.

The aim of this thesis is to test and validate a novel bioreactor for the cultivation of human mesenchymal stem cells. In this work, we investigate a novel …

Wireless Channel Characterization Based On Crowdsourced Data And Geographical Features, Rita Enami May 2019

Wireless Channel Characterization Based On Crowdsourced Data And Geographical Features, Rita Enami

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

To design and plan wireless communication systems, an accurate propagation estimate is required of a deployment region. Propagation prediction models consist of two types of fading: large-scale and small-scale fading. With large-scale fading, the path loss information is crucial for cell planning, coverage estimation, and optimization. With small-scale fading, the statistical fluctuation on the local variations of the average signal level can have a dramatic effect on protocol decisions and resulting performance. To obtain accurate estimates of both types of fading, typically field measurements are needed that use drive testing, which is expensive in terms of time and cost. Recently, …

Breakage Modeling Of Needle-Shaped Particles Using The Discrete Element Method, Rohit Kumar, William Ketterhagen, Avik Sarkar, Jennifer S. Curtis, Carl Wassgren May 2019

Breakage Modeling Of Needle-Shaped Particles Using The Discrete Element Method, Rohit Kumar, William Ketterhagen, Avik Sarkar, Jennifer S. Curtis, Carl Wassgren

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper models the breakage of large aspect ratio particles in an attrition cell using discrete element method (DEM) and population balance (PB) models. The particles are modeled in DEM as sphero-cylinders. The stresses within each particle are calculated along the particle length using beam theory and the particle breaks into two parts if the stress exceeds a critical value. Thus, the size distribution changes with time within the DEM model. The DEM model is validated against previously published experimental data.

The simulations demonstrate that particle breakage occurs primarily in front of the attrition cell blades, with the breakage rate …

Three-Dimensional Point Spread Function Engineering For High Axial Localization Precision, Weiran Wang May 2019

Three-Dimensional Point Spread Function Engineering For High Axial Localization Precision, Weiran Wang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Three-dimensional super-resolution microscopy enables the 3D positions of single fluorescent molecules to be measured from the 2D images produced by a microscope with nanoscale precision. However, the point spread function (PSF) of a conventional microscope is ill-suited for 3D imaging, necessitating the design of engineered PSFs. Although numerous PSFs have been demonstrated, none of these obtain the so-called Quantum Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). In this thesis, I aim to design 3D PSFs that perform close to this limit by utilizing two optimization approaches, using a Quasi-Newton algorithm in Matlab and a gradient descent algorithm in the TensorFlow framework, specifically seeking …

Microfluidic Assessment Of Stem Cell-Derived Pancreatic Beta Cells, Arvind Rajamani Srivatsava

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Contemporary and traditional methods of perifusional analysis of cells, pancreatic β cells in particular, involve the utilization of costly equipment exhibiting difficulties in setup and inflexibilities in operation and application. Microfluidic devices in general are inexpensive, easy to fabricate and are capable of screening multiple microenvironmental conditions, with the potential to generate concentration gradients for the study of biological phenomena such as cell migration. Utilization of these devices for cellular fluorescence imaging is also possible, paving the way for more sophisticated methods of dynamic assessment. Herein, we fabricated a pre-designed microfluidic device from photolithography, containing microwells capable of immobilizing human …
