Interdisciplinary Projects Help Fulfil Psychological Needs Of University Students, Hamid Mehmood Pasha
STEM Instructional Graduate Teaching Assistant Posters
Every scientific discipline is based on a specific body of concepts and presumptions. These concepts are crucial for understanding the design and implications of a situation. Therefore, it is believed that an interdisciplinary approach to research projects will help in generating a successful change to encourage an evolution in higher learning at University level.
Student retention can be increased by introducing interdisciplinary study projects which may involve students from the engineering, economics, social, history, language and/or human sciences departments. This is done to increase the basic psychological needs of the students in helping promote the academic engagement. Such projects can contribute …
Bioinspired Materials For Water Collection, Water Purification And Oil-Water Separation, Bharat Bhushan
Bioinspired Materials For Water Collection, Water Purification And Oil-Water Separation, Bharat Bhushan
Nature-Inspired Engineering
Access to a safe supply of water is a human right. However, with growing populations, global warming, and contamination due to human activity, it is one that is increasingly under threat. It is hoped that nature can inspire the creation of materials to aid in the supply and management of water, from water collection and purification to water source clean up and rehabilitation from oil contamination.
Many living species thrive in even the driest places, with some surviving on water harvested from fog1,2,3. Due to temperatures lower than dew point in the deserts at night, water condensation also …

Delivering Energy Savings For The Supply Chain Through Building Information Modelling As A Result Of The Horizon 2020 Energy Bimcert Project, Barry Mcauley, Avril Behan
Conference papers
The global buildings sector is now responsible for 40% of final energy consumption as well as accounting for 33% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. This has resulted in a growing urgency to address energy and emissions from buildings and construction, to meet restrictive 2020 targets as specified by the European Union (EU). To achieve these targets a number of funding initiatives have been put in place through Horizon 2020 with a focus on BIM, due to it having the potential to rapidly produce energy outputs that enable design teams to analyse and compare the most cost-effective, energy-efficient options. However, despite …

For this study, we applied activated biochar (AB) and its composition with magnetite (AB-Fe3O4) as adsorbents for the removal of polychlorophenols in model wastewater. We comprehensively characterized these adsorbents and performed adsorption tests under several experimental parameters. Using FTIR, we confirmed successful synthesis of AB-Fe3O4 composite through cetrimonium bromide surfactant. We conducted adsorption tests using AB and AB-Fe3O4 to treat model wastewater containing polychlorophenols, such as 2,3,4,6-Tetrachlorophenol (TeCP), 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol (TCP), and 2,4-Dichlorophenol (DCP). Results of the isotherm and the kinetic experiments were well adapted to Freundlich’s isotherm model and the …

Tracking Center Of Mass With Limited Inertial Measurement Units, Connor Nathaniel Morrow
Tracking Center Of Mass With Limited Inertial Measurement Units, Connor Nathaniel Morrow
Dissertations and Theses
Wearable motion tracking systems pose an opportunity to study and correct human balance and posture during movement. Currently, these observations are either being conducted in laboratories with the use of camera systems and markers placed on the body, or through the use of suits containing large numbers (15-20) of inertial measurement units. However, to aid with rehabilitation of individuals with impaired balance, there needs to be an option to collect these observations outside of clinics and without incurring much cost from the user. I have focused on three inertial measurement units, one placed on each shank and one placed on …

Learning From Incidents To Reduce The Risk Of Drowning In Swimming Pools: Implementation Of Experience-Based Feedback Regarding Near-Misses In Four Public Facilities In France, Élie Vignac, Pascal Lebihain, Bastien Soulé
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The prevention of sports accidents must rely on a detailed knowledge of accident circumstances and risk factors. Today, very few studies have investigated in depth non-fatal drowning incidents that have occurred in public swimming pools (PSP). Learning from incidents seems likely to advance the knowledge of accident scenarios. This research study aimed to capture minor incidents that might identify safety lessons and preventive measures. Incidents of minor and major aquatic events were collected from four PSPs that had hosted 700,000 bathers per year. About 800 incidents and 300 aquatic rescues performed by lifeguards were recorded within a time frame of …

Concrete Bridge Deck Performance Data And Metrics For The State Of Oregon, Jael Wettach-Glosser
Dissertations and Theses
Bridge decks are a critical element of a bridge that support and distribute vehicle loads to the superstructure. Because of the requirements of this role, bridge decks are exposed to severe conditions that typically lead to structural deficiency in bridges which is both costly and disruptive. Therefore, to keep bridges and highways in good repair, developing optimal preservation decisions for concrete bridge decks is key. In order to develop effective performance monitoring and preservation schedules, the parameters affecting bridge deck deterioration need to be better understood.

Structure-Property Relations Of Highly Ordered Bio-Nanocomposites, Suellen Pereira Espindola, Ben Norder, Jure Zlopasa, Stephen J. Picken
Nature-Inspired Engineering
Bio-nanocomposites with superior mechanical, transport and flame-retardant properties can be produced from the combination of biopolymers and silicate nanoclay platelets, such as montmorillonite (MMT) [1,2,4]. The highly ordered nanostructure observed in such systems is often compared to natural ones, such as in the brick-and-mortar arrangement of aragonite plates in nacreous materials [3]. Previous work on nacre-mimetic alginate/MMT nanocomposites has shown good compatibility between the biopolymer and inorganic filler and a dependence on MMT concentration to the level of alignment [4]. In this study, we investigate the effect of gelation on the orientation of nanoparticles and its impact on clay stacking …

Publications
Risk and risk perception remain focal areas of research within the aviation domain. The purpose of the current study was to assess an existing measure of a 26-item self-risk perception scale for pilots. A sample of 490 participants was used in the present study, and a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on the original 26-item instrument. The findings indicated that there was a poor model fit of the original instrument. Through the use of modification indices, a new 13-item scale was produced, which resulted in a second-order CFA model. Flight risk was shown to be the second-order construct with general …

A Nature-Inspired Passive Airflow System For Carbon Capture And Sequestration, James Niffenegger, Michael Aziz
A Nature-Inspired Passive Airflow System For Carbon Capture And Sequestration, James Niffenegger, Michael Aziz
Nature-Inspired Engineering
Increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions continue to threaten communities and biodiversity worldwide. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), where CO2 is removed from the air and stored so it cannot return to the atmosphere, has the potential to reduce these impacts. However, CCS systems are unpopular due to their high energetic and financial costs [1]. To-date, few systems exist that can effectively remove CO2 from ambient air and the majority are designed solely to remove CO2 from flue gas produced by power plants. Although half of global emissions can be captured from flue gas, …

Trade-Offs In Computer-Aided Biomimetics, Ruben Kruiper, Julian J.F.V. Vincent, Jessica Chen-Burger, Ioannis Konstas, Rupert C. Soar, Marc P.Y. Desmulliez
Nature-Inspired Engineering
Biomimetics, the application of mechanisms observed in nature to inform technical solutions, is inherently cross-disciplinary. For the most part, however, practitioners are only expert in one domain, e.g., engineering. Being a layman in the other domain, biology, can make it hard and time-consuming to find and understand relevant information. Computer-Aided Biomimetics (CAB) involves the development of computational tools to overcome this domain-expertise mismatch.
Finding a bridge between engineering and biology has been challenging. Although a plethora of methodological approaches have been proposed to bridge the engineering and biology domains, Biomimetics remains adventitious and research intensive. We give an overview of …

Characterization Of The 2-Phase Turning Response Of Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Biobots To Antennal Stimulation, Stefanie Jane Panzenhagen
Graduate Theses - Biology & Biomedical Engineering
Biobots are living insects that are controlled via neurostimulation applied through implanted electrodes and have a variety of potential applications such as search and rescue operations. Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches (MHCs) are commonly used as biobots; however, their use remains under investigation due to lack of a comprehensive motion profile in response to neurostimulation, which makes consistent control a challenge. MHC biobots often exhibit a 2-phase turning response to antennal stimulation, with an initial turn (primary) in the desired direction followed by a “corrective” turn (secondary) in the undesired direction. The purpose of this research is to characterize the 2-phase turning …

Tracking of pedestrian behaviour, particularly route selection and temporal behaviours, can be difficult to undertake. This is especially true of studies at a community or campus level where the anonymity of pedestrians can be difficult to protect. The introduction of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations 2016 (GDPR) has increased the complexity of this challenge. Advances in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology in recent years have increased the potential to monitor human behaviour by tracking and triangulating pedestrians. This paper describes an experiment undertaken along The Great South Wall at the Port of Dublin, which is considered a leading amenity …
