17-09 Assessing The Impact Of Air Pollution On Public Health Along Transit Routes, Stephen Mattingly, Kyung (Kate) Hyun, Shirin Kamali Rad, Mehrdad Arabi, Sina Famili Sep 2019

17-09 Assessing The Impact Of Air Pollution On Public Health Along Transit Routes, Stephen Mattingly, Kyung (Kate) Hyun, Shirin Kamali Rad, Mehrdad Arabi, Sina Famili

Transportation Research Center Reports

Transportation sources account for a large proportion of the pollutants found in most urban areas. Also, transportation activity and intensity appear likely to contribute to the risk of respiratory disease occurrence. This research investigates the impacts of transportation, urban design and socioeconomic characteristics on the risk of air pollution-related respiratory diseases in two of the biggest MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) in the US, Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Los Angeles at the block group (BG) level, by considering the US Environmental Protection Agency’s respiratory hazard quotient (RHQ) as the dependent variable. The researchers identify thirty candidate indicators of disease risk from …

Target Detection In Heterogeneous Clutter With Low Resolution Radar, Kyle G. Stankowski Sep 2019

Target Detection In Heterogeneous Clutter With Low Resolution Radar, Kyle G. Stankowski

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a framework for SAR target detection and super-resolution in low-resolution environments. The primary focus in this research is the background clutter heterogeneity that often accompanies low range and cross-range resolutions. A corrective model which accounts for clutter replacement is developed to define the detection and false alarm rates of the detector more accurately than a traditional model in which the radar return from the target supplements the existing clutter. In a heterogeneous clutter cell, the clutter replacement model leverages the different scattering distributions among the individual clutter types to generate a probability distribution function for the areas …

Fractality And Power Law Distributions: Shifting Perspectives In Educational Research, Matthijs Koopmans Sep 2019

Fractality And Power Law Distributions: Shifting Perspectives In Educational Research, Matthijs Koopmans

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

The dynamical character of education and the complexity of its constituent relationships have long been recognized, but the full appreciation of the implications of these insights for educational research is recent. Most educational research to this day tends to focus on outcomes rather than process, and rely on conventional cross-sectional designs and statistical inference methods that do not capture this complexity. This presentation focuses on two related aspects not well accommodated by conventional models, namely fractality (self-similarity, scale invariance) and power law distributions (an inverse relationship between frequency of occurrence and strength of response). Examples are presented for both phenomena …

Sandy Soil Improvement Through Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (Micp) By Immersion, Shihui Liu, Kang Du, Wei Huang, Lin Li Sep 2019

Sandy Soil Improvement Through Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (Micp) By Immersion, Shihui Liu, Kang Du, Wei Huang, Lin Li

Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research

The goal of this article is to develop an immersion method to improve the microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) treated samples. A batch reactor was assembled to immerse soil samples into cementation media. The cementation media can freely diffuse into the soil samples in the batch reactor instead of cementation media being injected. A full contact flexible mold, a rigid full contact mold, and a cored brick mold were used to prepare different soil sample holders. Synthetic fibers and natural fibers were selected to reinforce the MICP-treated soil samples. The precipitated CaCO3 in different areas of the MICP-treated samples was …

Evaluation And Demonstration Of Take Home Laboratory Kit, J. A. Rossiter, S. A. Pope, B. Ll. Jones, John Hedengren

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses some of the reasons for producing take home laboratory kits. This is then supplemented by detailed presentation of three different types of take home kit, alongside the motivations for their design and an evaluation of their efficacy with students.

Experimental Calibration Of Centrally Loaded Built-Up Battened Compression Members, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D., P.Eng. Sep 2019

Experimental Calibration Of Centrally Loaded Built-Up Battened Compression Members, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D., P.Eng.

Civil Engineering

There is a large diversity in the requirements for designing built-up compression members between international design codes. Most codes, including the North American standards and specifications specify the use of an equivalent or modified slenderness ratio. In general, all North American standards and specifications agree on the need of using a modified slenderness ratio, but differ in the factor used to multiply the local slenderness ratio. Theoretically it is difficult to estimate the exact value of this factor, and using experimental methods does not capture the exact value of this factor either. Hence, a different approach is needed to determine …

Adaptive-Hybrid Redundancy For Radiation Hardening, Nicolas S. Hamilton Sep 2019

Adaptive-Hybrid Redundancy For Radiation Hardening, Nicolas S. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

An Adaptive-Hybrid Redundancy (AHR) mitigation strategy is proposed to mitigate the effects of Single Event Upset (SEU) and Single Event Transient (SET) radiation effects. AHR is adaptive because it switches between Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) and Temporal Software Redundancy (TSR). AHR is hybrid because it uses hardware and software redundancy. AHR is demonstrated to run faster than TSR and use less energy than TMR. Furthermore, AHR allows space vehicle designers, mission planners, and operators the flexibility to determine how much time is spent in TMR and TSR. TMR mode provides faster processing at the expense of greater energy usage. TSR …

Enabling Mobile Neutron Detection Systems With Clyc, Matthew C. Recker Sep 2019

Enabling Mobile Neutron Detection Systems With Clyc, Matthew C. Recker

Theses and Dissertations

Cs2LiYCl6:Ce3+ (CLYC) has the desirable property of being sensitive to both gamma rays and neutrons while producing waveforms suitable for pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to determine which radiation was detected. This dissertation examines the behavior of CLYC to support its further development for mobile and portable applications. First, the feasibility of performing PSD with CLYC and an inexpensive data acquisition system was examined. This system was able to clearly distinguish both events with a figure of merit of 1.42. Next, the performance of a SiPM was compared to a traditional PMT. Analysis showed that the …
