Factors Affecting Cardiovascular Physiology In Cardiothoracic Surgery: Implications For Lumped-Parameter Modeling, Joshua Kaufmann, Ethan Kung

Publications

Cardiothoracic surgeries are complex procedures during which the patient cardiovascular physiology is constantly changing due to various factors. Physiological changes begin with the induction of anesthesia, whose effects remain active into the postoperative period. Depending on the surgery, patients may require the use of cardiopulmonary bypass and cardioplegia, both of which affect postoperative physiology such as cardiac index and vascular resistance. Complications may arise due to adverse reactions to the surgery, causing hemodynamic instability. In response, fluid resuscitation and/or vasoactive agents with varying effects may be used in the intraoperative or postoperative periods to improve patient hemodynamics. These factors have …

From Critical Behavior To Catastrophic Runaways: Comparing Sheared Granular Materials With Bulk Metallic Glasses, Alan A. Long, Dmitry Denisov, Peter Schall, Todd C. Hufnagel, Xiaojun Gu, Wendelin J. Wright, Karin A. Dahmen Nov 2019

From Critical Behavior To Catastrophic Runaways: Comparing Sheared Granular Materials With Bulk Metallic Glasses, Alan A. Long, Dmitry Denisov, Peter Schall, Todd C. Hufnagel, Xiaojun Gu, Wendelin J. Wright, Karin A. Dahmen

Faculty Journal Articles

The flow of granular materials and metallic glasses is governed by strongly correlated, avalanche-like deformation. Recent comparisons focused on the scaling regimes of the small avalanches, where strong similarities were found in the two systems. Here, we investigate the regime of large avalanches by computing the temporal profile or “shape” of each one, i.e., the time derivative of the stress-time series during each avalanche. We then compare the experimental statistics and dynamics of these shapes in granular media and bulk metallic glasses. We complement the experiments with a mean-field model that predicts a critical size beyond which avalanches turn into …

Strengthening Of Concrete Deep Beams With Extreme Discontinuities Using Near-Surface Mounted Composites, Moustafa Seifeddin Mansour

Civil and Environmental Theses

Installation of a web opening that fully interrupts the natural load path in concrete deep beams produces regions of extreme discontinuities and reduces the shear strength. This research examined the effectiveness of using near-surface-mounted carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (NSM-CFRP) reinforcement to restore the shear strength of deep beams with extreme discontinuities. The strut-and-tie model (STM) procedures were utilized to develop three different strengthening solutions around the discontinuity regions. A total of eight deep beam specimens (150 x 500 x2700 mm) with a shear span-to-depth ratio of a/h = 0.8 were constructed and tested. One beam was solid. Seven beams had a …

Secure Virtual Machine Placement In Cloud Data Centers, Amit Agarwal, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta Nov 2019

Secure Virtual Machine Placement In Cloud Data Centers, Amit Agarwal, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to an increasing number of avenues for conducting cross-VM side-channel attacks, the security of multi-tenant public IaaS cloud environments is a growing concern. These attacks allow an adversary to steal private information from a target user whose VM instance is co-located with that of the adversary. In this paper, we focus on secure VM placement algorithms which a cloud provider can use for the automatic enforcement of security against such co-location based attacks. To do so, we first establish a metric for evaluating and quantifying co-location security of multi-tenant public IaaS clouds, and then propose a novel VM placement …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stress and depression are a common affliction in all walks of life. When left unmanaged, stress can inhibit productivity or cause depression. Depression can occur independently of stress. There has been a sharp rise in mobile health initiatives to monitor stress and depression. However, these initiatives usually require users to install dedicated apps or multiple sensors, making such solutions hard to scale. Moreover, they emphasise sensing individual factors and overlook social interactions, which plays a significant role in influencing stress and depression while being a part of a social system. We present StressMon, a stress and depression detection system that …

An Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Internal Wave Kinetic Energy Density In Variable Stratifications, Allison Marie Lee Nov 2019

An Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Internal Wave Kinetic Energy Density In Variable Stratifications, Allison Marie Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Internal waves are generated in a fluid if the density increases continuously with depth. The variation in density with depth, or stratification, defines the natural frequency of the fluid N. Two common examples of stratified fluids are the ocean and atmosphere; internal waves are generated continuously in both mediums. Although there are many internal wave generation mechanisms, one common and frequently studied method is tidal flow over oceanic bathymetry. If the local natural frequency of the water near the topography is greater than the tidal frequencyω, internal waves will be generated by the tidal flow over the topography. If N=ω, …

Synchronous Machine Emulation Of Vsc For Interconnection Of Renewable Energy Sources Through Hvdc Transmission, Mohamed Asker Kanakkayil Nov 2019

Synchronous Machine Emulation Of Vsc For Interconnection Of Renewable Energy Sources Through Hvdc Transmission, Mohamed Asker Kanakkayil

Electrical Engineering Theses

The majority of the energy demand over the past years has been fulfilled by centralized generating stations. However, with a continuously increasing energy demand, the integration of decentralized renewable energy sources (RES) into the power system network becomes inevitable even though these sources affect the stability of the grid due to their intermittency and use of various power converters. The transmission of power over long distances from RES is usually accomplished either by AC or DC transmission. High voltage DC transmission (HVDC) is preferred over high voltage AC transmission (HVAC) due to numerous and complex reasons, such as its lower …

Flexibility Of Remediation Methods For Winding Open Circuit Faults In A Multiphase Pm Machine Considering Iron Losses Minimization, Fan Wu, Ayman M. El-Refaie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The flexibility of post-fault control in multiphase machine systems stems from their multiple degrees of freedom. A post-fault loss-minimization method is proposed and investigated in this paper, in which both the machine copper and iron losses are considered during the derivation of post-fault remediation methods. Therefore, machine efficiency during post-fault operation can be further improved compared to the conventional stator-ohmic-loss-minimization approach. In addition, the combination of three key factors/constraints that can influence the post-fault control strategy of a six-phase permanent magnet (PM) machine has been investigated. By comparing four selected remediation methods based on three constraints, the pros and cons …

Sorption Of Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene And Different Ratios Of Mixture Solvent By Plasticized Pema Films Using A Qcm Sensor, Xinpeng Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can cause great harm to human health especially benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene. In this work a Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensor with a polymer/plasticizer film was developed to quantify the VOCs both in air and water. QCM is an acoustic wave sensor that can be used well in detecting the aromatic compounds in the film. Because more than one VOC is present in the air, this thesis focuses on finding the sorption of different ratios of VOCs (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene) using a polymer/plasticizer film in QCM. Poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) was used as the polymer because …

Adaptive-Hybrid Redundancy With Error Injection, Nicholas S. Hamilton, Scott R. Graham, Timothy Carbino, James C. Petrosky, J. Addison Betances

Faculty Publications

Adaptive-Hybrid Redundancy (AHR) shows promise as a method to allow flexibility when selecting between processing speed and energy efficiency while maintaining a level of error mitigation in space radiation environments. Whereas previous work demonstrated AHR’s feasibility in an error free environment, this work analyzes AHR performance in the presence of errors. Errors are deliberately injected into AHR at specific times in the processing chain to demonstrate best and worst case performance impacts. This analysis demonstrates that AHR provides flexibility in processing speed and energy efficiency in the presence of errors

Comparison Of Modern Controls And Reinforcement Learning For Robust Control Of Autonomously Backing Up Tractor-Trailers To Loading Docks, Journey Mcdowell

Master's Theses

Two controller performances are assessed for generalization in the path following task of autonomously backing up a tractor-trailer. Starting from random locations and orientations, paths are generated to loading docks with arbitrary pose using Dubins Curves. The combination vehicles can be varied in wheelbase, hitch length, weight distributions, and tire cornering stiffness. The closed form calculation of the gains for the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) rely heavily on having an accurate model of the plant. However, real-world applications cannot expect to have an updated model for each new trailer. Finding alternative robust controllers when the trailer model is changed was …
