Influence Of Recreational Areas On The Functional Service Of Highways, Jerry G. Pigman Aug 1971

Influence Of Recreational Areas On The Functional Service Of Highways, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Development of outdoor recreational facilities in Kentucky has generally been in predominately rural areas. Access to these areas from the primary highway network is often provided by existing low-standard local roads. The recreational travel demand often exceeds the design volumes of these local roads or the volumes that can be accommodated at reasonable levels of service. Such travel demand also constitutes a significant portion of the total demand on the rural primary network, particularly during the peak weekend periods.

Many large reservoirs in Kentucky have generated extensive developments of recreational facilities in the surrounding areas. Highways which have been displaced …

A Study Of Dr. Donald Maley's Theory -- "Research And Experimentation In Industrial Arts", John Edward Ferree Jul 1971

A Study Of Dr. Donald Maley's Theory -- "Research And Experimentation In Industrial Arts", John Edward Ferree

Graduate Research Papers

The problem of this study is to make a thorough examination of Dr. Donald Maley's theory -- "Research and Experimentation in Industrial Arts in the Junior or Senior High School."

Perhaps now in 1968, more than ever, concern for what is in store for industrial arts is, or should be, considered more "grave" than expressed in the above quote of Dr. Maley in 1959. Certainly now it could generally be agreed that all theories concerning the future path of industrial arts, of which Dr. Maley's Research and Experimentation theory is one, deserve a full measure of study and evaluation by …

Fastener Strength In Diaphragm Braced Members, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz May 1971

Fastener Strength In Diaphragm Braced Members, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

SUMMARY In conjunction with research projects on diaphragm-braced members conducted at Cornell University, this investigation deals with the function of the fasteners in the braced system. In these systems, the diaphragm resists the lateral deflections of the braced members, in its plane, by virtue of its shear regidity (Qdr) and its shear strain capacity Yd (as a measure of strength). Considering the system in a slightly deformed shape, compatibility of displacements and forces between the diaphragm and the braced member at their connection locations, implies that the fasteners at these locations are subjected to the action of a system of …

Experimental Installations Of Impact Attenuation Devices, Bruce S. Siria, William M. Seymour, Don L. Cornette, James L. Miller May 1971

Experimental Installations Of Impact Attenuation Devices, Bruce S. Siria, William M. Seymour, Don L. Cornette, James L. Miller

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The expanding system of limited access, multilane highway facilities in the United States has enhanced traffic service between many varied origins and destinations. As a result, these facilities have not only reduced travel times and travel costs, but have generated additional travel by virtue of their technological splendor. The increasing dominance of multilane highways in terms of percentage of total vehicle miles travelled has produced a revolution in highway engineering philosophy. Higher design speeds, increased lane widths, lateral separation of opposing traffic streams, absence of passing restrictions, and increased traffic capacities were attributes intuitively sought. An ironic result is the …

Development Of An Electronic Means Of Weighing Vehicles In Motion, Ben W. Carr Jr., Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

An in-stream weighing platform was designed and installed in the eastbound lane of I 64 and 75 near Lexington, Kentucky. The broken-bridge scale platform was designed with the outer edges of the two sections supported on hinges and contiguous edges supported by two 20,000-pound capacity load cells. The assembled scale measures 4'-6" x 10'-1/2" with a total weight of about 2,000 pounds.

The electronics developed for the system included digitizing circuitry which processed the load cell signals and recorded the data on digital magnetic tape. Computer processing of the field data produced tabular information on vehicle speed, axle spacing, number …

Experimental Concrete Pavement Containing Fly-Ash Admixtures [1971], James R. Philpot Apr 1971

Experimental Concrete Pavement Containing Fly-Ash Admixtures [1971], James R. Philpot

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The report enclosed is somewhat routine inasmuch as it documents a repeat of a portion of an earlier experimental project. The previous project was on Poplar Level Road; our final report was dated July 1966 (KYHPR-64-1). Special Provision No. 70 was used also on the Jefferson Freeway project. However, there was no "control section" involved in the current project. The Jefferson Freeway project was authorized by the BPR under P.P.M. 60-2 only (now PPM 20-6.3).

The most significant findings from both projects concern the water requirements the concrete containing the fly-ash admixture. Whereas laboratory tests indicated reasonable expectations of a …

Parameter For Comparing Anemometer Response, L. M. Fingerson Jan 1971

Parameter For Comparing Anemometer Response, L. M. Fingerson

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

In comparing the theoretical performance of sensors, the term eb/q (voltage change due to change In heat transfer) was found to be a fundamental sensor parameter. This was true for both sensitivity and frequency response in both constant current and constant temperature systems. Equations and data are presented for calculating this parameter for most wire and film sensors. Wedges, cones, and other non-cylindrical sensors have not been included because of their special problems at low frequencies due to conduction losses.

Internal cooling of the sensor is used for high temperature environments. Calculations show that the sensitivity at low …

An Attempt To Characterize The ‘Turbulence Burst Phenomena’ Using Digital Time Series Analysis, B. Johnson, R. Saylor Jan 1971

An Attempt To Characterize The ‘Turbulence Burst Phenomena’ Using Digital Time Series Analysis, B. Johnson, R. Saylor

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Several attempts to measure "periodicity" in the output signal of hot wires and hot films located in the viscous sublayer have been made in recent years. The usual method is to perform an autocorrelation on the signal and to interpret the strong peaks in the correlation function as indicative of the mean period of the "turbulence bursts" during a particular sampling interval.

The data analyzed for the presence of "turbulent bursts" were from the test of a 60-foot, 8-oared racing shell at the David Taylor Model Basin of the Naval Ship Research and Development Center. The shell was instrumented with …

On The Phenomenon Of Vortex Street Breakdown, William W. Durgin, Sture K.F. Karlsson Jan 1971

On The Phenomenon Of Vortex Street Breakdown, William W. Durgin, Sture K.F. Karlsson

Office of the Provost Scholarship

A von Kármán vortex street generated in the usual way was subjected to a deceleration, thereby changing the ratio of longitudinal to lateral spacing between the vortices. Distortion of the individual vortices followed which resulted in annihilation of concentrated vortex regions and creation of a stationary wake flow. This wake flow was itself dynamically unstable and developed into a new vortex street of a different frequency from the initial one. The breakdown of the initial vortex street is qualitatively explained by considering the convection of a concentrated vortex region due to the motion imposed by all the other vortices.

The Analysis And Behavior Of Thin-Steel Hyperbolic Paraboloid Shells, Peter Gergely, P. V. Banavalkar, J. E. Parker Jan 1971

The Analysis And Behavior Of Thin-Steel Hyperbolic Paraboloid Shells, Peter Gergely, P. V. Banavalkar, J. E. Parker

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

An extensive experimental and analytical investigation of thin-steel hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) structures was carried out to provide design information. As a result of this work, empirical data is provided regarding the behavior of such structures and computer programs are presented for the analysis of thin steel hypar structures. Hyperbolic paraboloid structures possess a unique combination of structural and architectural properties, some of them are the following 1) Due to the double curvature of the surface the internal stresses in the deck are generally low and the deflections are small. 2) Since a hyper surface can be generated by straight lines, …

Damping Capacity Of A Model Steel Structure, Dixon Rea, R. W. Clough, Jack G. Bouwkamp Jan 1971

Damping Capacity Of A Model Steel Structure, Dixon Rea, R. W. Clough, Jack G. Bouwkamp

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The damping capacities of seven model steel structures, each consisting of a heavy steel platform supported on four columns, have been determined from forced vibration tests. The vibrations were produced by an eccentric-mass vibration generator, and the amplitudes ranged from small displacements up to slightly greater than yield displacement. The tests were terminated at the higher amplitudes once fatigue cracks formed in any of the joint welds in the columns. For vibration amplitudes up to a critical amplitude slightly less than yield displacement, the damping factors of the structures were constant, independent of amplitude, and ranged between .15 and .25~ …

Analysis Of Light Gage Steel Shear Diaphragms, Albert R. Ammar, Arthur H. Nilson Jan 1971

Analysis Of Light Gage Steel Shear Diaphragms, Albert R. Ammar, Arthur H. Nilson

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION: It has long been recognized by structural engineers, that light gage steel cladding floor and roof decking systems have a considerable stiffening and strengthening effect on building frameworks. The beneficial contribution of these diaphragm systems is most pronounced when the structure as a whole is subjected to loads which result in an in-plane shear action of the cladding. This occurs, for example, when the rigidity of a floor or roof diaphragm acting as a membrane is utilized to transmit lateral forces to stiff end walls. Another example of diaphragm action is found in pitched roof portal sheds under vertical …

Effects Of Molecular Characteristics Of Polymers On Drag Reduction, Gin‐Chain ‐C Liaw, Jacques L. Zakin, Gary Kent Patterson

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Turbulent measurements in capillary tubes and in pipes were made on nonpolar solutions of seven polymer species, three at more than one molecular weight, over wide concentration ranges. A critical concentration, Cc, was taken as the minimum concentration for disappearance of the turbulence transition region. Above this concentration, friction factor‐generalized Reynolds number data show only a gradual deviation from extension of the laminar line. Cc increases with tube diameter and decreases with molecular weight. The critical dimensionless volume friction Cc [η] is less dependent on molecular weight. The levels of Cc [η] for different polymer species in a given tube …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Tungsten, James W. Johnson, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Jan 1971

The Anodic Dissolution Of Tungsten, James W. Johnson, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of tungsten was studied in H2SO4-K2SO4 solutions (pH = -2 to 2.5) and K2SO4-K2CO3-KOH solutions (pH = 11.5 to 14.5) at 25 C. Faradaic efficiency studies in basic solutions showed the metal to be oxidized to the +6 state. In acid solutions, a thick protective film of yellow WO3 was formed. Polarization curves possessed linear Tafel regions (slope ~ 2.3 RT/F) at potentials slightly more positive than the rest potentials. An anodic dissolution mechanism is proposed which involves a surface film …
