Nebraska Tractor Tests

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT GENERAL CONDITIONS Each tractor is a production model equipped for common usage. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operator station. Additional weight can be added as ballast if the manufacturer regularly supplies it for sale. The static tire loads and the inflation pressures must conform to recommendations in the Tire Standards published by the Society of Automotive Engineers. PREPARATION FOR PERFORMANCE RUNS The engine crankcase is drained and refilled with a measured amount of new oil conforming to specifications in the operator’s manual. The fuel …

Colorado River Regional Assessment Study Part Three: Area-Specific Water Quality Analysis And Environmental Assessment, Utah Water Research Laboratory Jan 1975

Colorado River Regional Assessment Study Part Three: Area-Specific Water Quality Analysis And Environmental Assessment, Utah Water Research Laboratory

Reports

The Colorado River Bain contains the most diverse environment setting of any American river. High mountainous elevations (>14,000 feet) are ultimately succeeded by sea level plains and low valleys. Geological structures and formations include deep, intricately carved river canyons, high mountain slopes, large saline shale structures, and long verdant irrigated river valleys. Fir forests are succeeded by arid rangelands. The river produces the lowest outflow per unit area (60 acre feet per square mile) of any river basin in the United States. It contains the largest number of unique and endangered species in the United States. Finally, it is …

A Technique For Predicting The Aquatic Ecosystem Response To Weather Modification, Eugene K. Israelsen, David R. Bernard, Thomas M. Twedt, Henry M. Runke Jan 1975

A Technique For Predicting The Aquatic Ecosystem Response To Weather Modification, Eugene K. Israelsen, David R. Bernard, Thomas M. Twedt, Henry M. Runke

Reports

In the past, considerable effort has been spent on the development of techniques for increasing precipitation from a given cloud formation. However, little attention has been given to identifying and evaluating the impacts of cloud seeing activities on the aquatic ecosystems within the affected areas. The objective of this study was to apply the simulation technique to predict the impacts of cloud seeing on the aquatic ecosystem within the area subject to weather modification. A small mountain watershed near Logan, Utah, was selected for the study. Measurements were made of the significant parameter levels under current conditions. A hydrologic and …

Crystallization Of A Tetrasilicic Fluormica Glass, W. H. Daniels, Robert E. Moore Jan 1975

Crystallization Of A Tetrasilicic Fluormica Glass, W. H. Daniels, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crystallization of a tetrasilicic synthetic mica glass of nominal composition K2Mg5Si8O20F4 was investigated at selected temperatures from 560° to 1150°C using DTA, density measurements, electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction techniques. Crystallization is shown to occur in 2 stages. (1) Initial structural ordering occurs at ∼600°C, as indicated by a strongly exothermic reaction, an increase in density, and the appearance of X‐ray diffraction lines. (This transformation temperature is related to fluorine content.) (2) The crystal morphology of the glass‐ceramic changes at 900° to 1150°C. A mechanism is proposed for the transformation from amorphous to crystalline structure in this synthetic mica …

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Srtio By Capacitance Manometry, D. B. Schwarz, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1975

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Srtio By Capacitance Manometry, D. B. Schwarz, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The oxidation kinetics of a single crystal of SrTiOs were measured with a tensivolumetric system over the temperature range 700 -975 at 0.03 atm oxygen pressure. The oxidation was found to be oxygen diffusion limited with an activation energy of 14.9 - 1.3 kcal/mole. Combining the kinetic data with relative defect concentration data yielded an activation energy for oxygen self-diffusion of 57 - 16 kcal/mole. The enthalpy of formation of doubly ionized oxygen vacancies was calculated to be 126 - 13 kcal/mol. © 1975, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

Mechanism Of Uai3 To Uai4 Transformation, Ling Ping Lee, Hollis P. Leighly Jan 1975

Mechanism Of Uai3 To Uai4 Transformation, Ling Ping Lee, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The compound, UA14, which forms during the peritectic reaction (Liquid + UA13 → UAI4), has a long needlelike shape and reveals the characteristic morphology of a fishtail when cut along the long axis. When cut perpendicular to the long axis, it shows an internal core of another phase, which has been identified as a primary aluminum solid solution. Because of the interesting relationship between the crystallographic structures of UA13 and UA14, the peculiar UA14 morphology can be explained on the basis of a proposed mechanism. The mechanism of UA13 to UA14 transformation has been identified as shear and diffusion controlled …

Insoluble Condensation Nuclei: The Effect Of Contact Angle, Surface Roughness And Adsorption., P. C. Mahata, Darryl J. Alofs

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Condensation of Water Vapor on Various Surfaces Was Studied Experimentally. for Surfaces with an Air-Water Contact Angle Theta Less Than 20 Degree, the Experimentally Determined Values of Critical Supersaturation S//c Agreed with Those Given by the Volmer Theory. at Higher Theta, the Experimental Values of S//c Were Below the Volmer Theory Values. When the Applied Supersaturation Was Less Than S//c, Condensation Was Avoided for Periods as Long as 20 H. It Was Determined Both by Experiment and Theoretical Analysis that the Effect of Surface Roughness is to Decrease S//c Only Slightly. These Results Suggest that Most Insoluble Airborne Particles Are …

Magnetoelastic Rayleigh Wave Convolver, William P. Robbins, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1975

Magnetoelastic Rayleigh Wave Convolver, William P. Robbins, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

An epoxy-bonded LiNb03-YIG-LiNb03 composite structure has been constructed and operated as a magnetoelastic Rayleigh wave convolver with 50-MHz input signals. The acoustic signals were propagated on a (110) YIG surface and the convolution characteristics were studied as a function of the magnitude and direction of the applied magnetic field. Nonuniform demagnetizing fields limited convolution pulses to less than 1.5 /-Lsec duration. Relatively efficient operation was observed corresponding to an internal efficiency F int of -53 dBm
