Phase 1 Inspection Report: National Dam Safety Program. Mississippi - Kaskaskia - St. Louis Basin. Ditch Creek Dam, Washington County, Missouri, Woodward-Clyde Consultants, Chicago, Illinois Jan 1980

Phase 1 Inspection Report: National Dam Safety Program. Mississippi - Kaskaskia - St. Louis Basin. Ditch Creek Dam, Washington County, Missouri, Woodward-Clyde Consultants, Chicago, Illinois

Missouri Dam Safety Inspection Reports

This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of Ditch Creek Dam. It was prepared under the National Program of Inspection of Non-Federal Dams.

The inspection results indicate problems with the spillway adequacy. Although the dam is capable of passing the PMF without overtopping, the lack of a proper spillway and discharge channel and the need to pass runoff over a public transportation route (State Highway H) indicates a deficiency at this facility.

Missouri Dam Safety Inspection Reports

This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of the Lac Benet Dam (MO 30281).

It was prepared under the National Program of Inspection of Non-Federal Dams.

This dam has been classified as unsafe, non-emergency by the St. Louis District as a result of the application of the following criteria:

a. Spillway will not pass 50 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam.

b. Overtopping of the dam could result in failure of the dam.

c. Dam failure significantly increases the hazard to loss of life downstream.

Missouri Dam Safety Inspection Reports

This report presents the results of field inspection and evaluation of the Little Indian Creek Dam (MO 30718).

It was prepared under the National Program of Inspection of Non-Federal Dams.

This dam has been classified as unsafe, non-emergency by the St. Louis District as a result of the application of the following criteria:

a. This dam retains less than 50 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the embankment.

b. Overtopping of the embankment could result in failure of the dam.

c. Dam failure significantly increases the hazard to loss of life downstream.

Rubber Covered Rolls-The Nonlinear Elastic Problem, R. C. Batra Jan 1980

Rubber Covered Rolls-The Nonlinear Elastic Problem, R. C. Batra

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of the indentation of a rubberlike layer bonded to a rigid cylinder and indented by another rigid cylinder is analyzed. The rubberlike layer is assumed to be made of a homogeneous Mooncy-Rivlin material. The materially and geometrically nonlinear problem is solved by using the finite-element code developed by the author. Results computed and presented graphically include the pressure profile at the contact surface, stress distribution at the bond surface and the deformed shape of the indented surface. © 1980 by ASME.

The Influence Of Harvesting Strategies And Economic Constraints On The Feasibility Of Farm Grain Drying And Storage Facilities, Otto J. Loewer Jr., Thomas C. Bridges, G. M. White, Douglas G. Overhults

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The economic return to on-the-farm grain drying and storage facilities is influenced by many factors including harvesting strategies, facility management, market conditions, energy considerations, and facility design. This study evaluates the influence of these factors on expected net return.

Economic Comparison Of Alternative Burley Tobacco Harvesting Practices By Computer, Thomas C. Bridges, Larry G. Wells, George A. Duncan, John N. Walker

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The computer model CATCH (Computer Analysis of Tobacco Cutting and Housing) was developed to provide the individual tobacco producer with management information concerning alternative methods of harvesting burley tobacco. CATCH utilizes specific producer in-puts to analyze 24 alternative burley production systems and presents up to four economic rankings containing costs, equipment and labor for each system. The economic rankings aid the producer in decision making with regard to his own operation.

An Improved Technique For Calibrating And Testing Power System Generator Automatic Synchronizing And Speed Matching Relays, David C. Nagy, Earl F. Richards

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design of a unique special purpose instrument for calibrating and testing power system automatic synchronizing and speed matching relays is described. The unit is constructed using inexpensive integrated circuit components and provides a direct digital readout of slip frequency from 0.05 Hz to 0.50 Hz resolution and advance angle from 0 to 99.9 degrees with 0.1-degree resolution. This device eliminates the need for expensive test equipment previously required, expedites the test procedure and solves the problem of referencing against a variable bus frequency source. Luminescence In Slipped And Dislocation-Free Laser-Annealed Silicon, R.H. Uebbing, P. Wagner, H. Baumgart, H. J. Queisser

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Photoluminescence of cw laser-annealed silicon shows a dramatic difference in electronic behavior of the reconstructed material depending upon either creation or suppression of dislocations. Beyond a critical exposure time slip appears, and the luminescence of these samples is dominated by dislocation-related defect levels.

Use Of Extreme Value Theory In Estimating Flood Peaks From Mixed Populations, Ronand V. Canfield, D. R. Olsen, R. H. Hawkins, T. L. Chen Jan 1980

Use Of Extreme Value Theory In Estimating Flood Peaks From Mixed Populations, Ronand V. Canfield, D. R. Olsen, R. H. Hawkins, T. L. Chen

Reports

The flood magnitude for a given frequency or return period is estimated by fitting a probability distribution to the historical annual flood series. The log-Pearson type III distribution has been selected by the Water Resources Council for general use by the federal government, but practitioners should examine an annual flood series and use alternative distributions where they will produce better estimates. Empirical goodness of fit is one criterion for choosing a distribution, but the reasonableness of the assumptions theoretically associated with the form of the distribution should also be considered. In theory, extreme-value distributions are particularly applicable to flow series …

Influence Of Unsaturated Hydraulic Properties On Infiltration From Circular Surface Areas, Abdolhossien Nassehzadeh-Tabrizi, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1980

Influence Of Unsaturated Hydraulic Properties On Infiltration From Circular Surface Areas, Abdolhossien Nassehzadeh-Tabrizi, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

The effects and interactive effects on infiltration of parameters in the Brooks-Corey equation for defining the hydraulic properties of unsaturated soils are investigated by analyzing the results of numerical solutions of the unsaturated flow characteristics resulting from water applied on a circular surface area. The soil parameters are allowed to vary continuously as a function of depth. The parameters that have been allowed to vary separately and in pairs are: (1) The pore size distribution exponent, (2) Pb- The bubbling pressure, (3) Sr- The residual saturation, (4) n- The soil porosity and (5) Ko- The saturated hydraulic conductivity. The conclusions …
