Evaluation Of Possible Temperature Fluctuations From Proposed Power Modifications At Hoover Dam, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service Mar 1980

Evaluation Of Possible Temperature Fluctuations From Proposed Power Modifications At Hoover Dam, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service

Publications (WR)

There are several planned alternatives for increasing the generation capacity of Hoover Dam to help meet peak power demands. These alternatives include: (a) uprating the existing generating units, (b) replacing or adding one or more generating units and (c) adding reversible pumped-storage hydroelectric units. Since the existing generators are at the end of their economic life and have to be replaced, their uprating has been scheduled as routine maintenance. This will increase the generating capacity of the Hoover Dam powerplant from 1240 MW to 1810 MW, but the anticipated capacity for meeting power demand is 2300 MW. Therefore, modifications (alternatives …

Evaluation Of Impacts Associated With Reregulation Of Water Levels In Lake Mohave, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service Mar 1980

Evaluation Of Impacts Associated With Reregulation Of Water Levels In Lake Mohave, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service

Publications (WR)

The U.S. Water and Power Resources Service is considering reregulating Lake Mohave water levels to increase the net power benefit from Hoover Dam. Reregulation will not increase the generation capacity of the Hoover powerplant but it will enable the plant operation to be increased when the energy has greater monetary value. Energy generated at different times of the year has different market value, the highest being in January-March and July- September. By generating more power during these periods more net monetary benefit can be derived from Hoover Dam. The total volume of water released from Hoover Dam over an annual …

The Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Du Thinh Dat, Teoman Peköz Feb 1980

The Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Du Thinh Dat, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION The flexural buckling of columns is a fundamental problem whose solution was found by Euler more than 200 years ago. Since then, refinements have extended the solution to the inelastic range and clarified the influence of initial deflections and residual stresses. Most of these advances were made by studying hot-rolled steel columns, which are widely used. Cold-formed sections are coming into greater and greater use, thanks to the great variety of geometries available, which make them suitable for specific needs, and the significant advances made in the last four decades in understanding the behavior of cold-formed steel and in …

Ultimate Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Z-Purlins, M. A. A. Razak, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel structures are being widely used in various forms of construction such as industrial plants, gymnasiums, hangars and metal buildings. One important feature of metal building construction is the use of light gage roof panels connected to purlins, particularly of the Z-section. This section is, besides the channel-section, the simplest two-flange section which can be produced by cold-forming. The purlins have span lengths of 20 to 25 feet, generally made continuous over the building rigid frames by nesting. Construction details vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The purlins available would typically have prepunched holes for connection of various types …

Transverse Pavement Markings For Speed Control And Accident Reduction, Kenneth R. Agent Feb 1980

Transverse Pavement Markings For Speed Control And Accident Reduction, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pavement markings were placed ahead of a high-accident location (a sharp curve). Speed and accident studies were conducted before and after. The markings were placed so that drivers otherwise failing to reduce speed would see the markings at an increasing rate. The spacing of lines was intended to create an illusion of acceleration which would cause the driver to slow. Speed is perceived by the visual senses; drivers sense forces resulting from changes in speed but relate and associate speed to the visual field. In laboratory experiments, it has been shown that a driver's perception of speed can be varied …

Laser Power Calculations: Sources Of Error, Lee W. Casperson Feb 1980

Laser Power Calculations: Sources Of Error, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The physical phenomena that dominate the power characteristics of a laser depend on the detailed nature of the amplifying medium and the resonator structure. In predicting the power characteristics, numerous approximations are always required. The most important approximations are considered here in detail, and error estimates are presented so that a designer can select the appropriate model for a particular application. Emphasis is placed on analytic solutions and specific phenomena considered include longitudinal and transverse spatial hole burning, large single-pass gain, and mixed line broadening.

Lecture Draft On Sensory Recall Device - 1980, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

Perception is a bodily function. The brain “sees” according to the orders which the optic nerve relays from its position at the back of the eye. Similarly, it is the brain which also "hears." As we know from our dreaming and our remembering, neither eye nor ear is indispensable to having the sensations of seeing and hearing.

A New Experiential Course In Engineering Management, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Institutions with undergraduate programs of the engineering management type often find their introductory courses to be popular electives for students in more traditional engineering disciplines, while in other cases specific courses from business management or industrial engineering departments are elected. Where none of these options are available or suitable, engineering schools are well advised to provide one or two key courses to provide at least an introduction to the management problems their graduates will face. At Brown University, according to Prof. Barrett Hazeltine, a series of two courses in engineering management serve this function; more than half of Brown's undergraduate …

Thermosiphon System, Florida Solar Energy Center Jan 1980

Thermosiphon System, Florida Solar Energy Center

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In a THERMOSIPHON SYSTEM, cold water from the bottom of the elevated storage tank flows to the lowest point in the system (which is the bottom of the solar collector).

As it is warmed it becomes less dense and flows up to a side port near, but not at, the top of the storage tank. If the tank is about two feet above the top of the collector, the system will not back-siphon at night. If back-siphoning were to occur, the warm water would be cooled during its passage through the dormant collector. Thermosiphoning systems have no moving parts and …

Electronic Fuel Injection Techniques For Hydrogen Powered I.C. Engines, Art Maccarley, W. D. Van Vorst Jan 1980

Electronic Fuel Injection Techniques For Hydrogen Powered I.C. Engines, Art Maccarley, W. D. Van Vorst

Electrical Engineering

Numerous studies have demonstrated the advantages of hydrogen as a fuel for Otto Cycle engines due to high thermal efficiency and low exhaust pollutant levels. Characteristic of hydrogen engine operation using premixed intake charge formation is a problem of pre-ignition resulting in an intake manifold “backfire”. Additional problems include high NOx production when using certain equivalence ratios and power output degradation due to low fuel energy/volume density.

Techniques for direct and port fuel injection are discussed as means for overcoming these problems. Emphasis is placed on the need for total engine control, integrating control of fuel injection, ignition timing, …

The Limnological Status Of Lake Mead And Lake Mohave Under Present And Future Powerplant Operations Of Hoover Dam, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon, U.S. Water And Power Resources Service

Publications (WR)

The ever-increasing demand for energy in the southwest has led to a search for additional sources of power generation. Coal-fired powerplants currently provide most of the baseline energy in the southwest, but this must be supplemented with hydroelectric power during periods of peak demand. In order to provide additional peaking power, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is considering a number of projects to modify existing hydroelectric facilities, or add new facilities in the Lake Mead Recreation Area. The Hoover Powerplant Modification Feasibility Investigation was authorized by Congress on December 16, 1975 to determine the feasibility of: (i) adding one or …

Ground Driven Powered Tillage, Larry G. Wells, E. M. Smith, D. E. Hammett, H. J. Thompson Jr. Jan 1980

Ground Driven Powered Tillage, Larry G. Wells, E. M. Smith, D. E. Hammett, H. J. Thompson Jr.

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A ground driven powered tillage device is described which utilizes a passive rolling coulter propelled through the soil by a prime mover. The reaction torque imparted by the soil to the coulter is delivered via a torque transfer unit to a powered tillage blade. The tillage blade rotates counter to the direction of the passive rolling coulter and prepares a tilled furrow of some predetermined depth for seed placement and coverage.

Analysis is presented in which the torque developed by a passive rolling coulter engaging the soil is predicted. A relationship is presented for determining the velocity ratio between the …

Analysis And Testing Of Powered Tillage Blades, Larry G. Wells, E. M. Smith, D. E. Hammett Jan 1980

Analysis And Testing Of Powered Tillage Blades, Larry G. Wells, E. M. Smith, D. E. Hammett

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Fundamental design considerations for powered rotary tillage blades are presented and discussed. The relationship between blade angular velocity and the geometric dimensions of cutting edges is specified for tillage blades rotating counter to the direction of travel and assuming a typical forward speed for tillage.

Analyses showed that a powered blade rotated opposite to the direction of travel can be operated at relatively lower angular velocities than can one rotated in the direction of travel to achieve equivalent blade velocity and acceleration relative to the soil. Furthermore, a blade rotated opposite to the direction of travel requires relatively lower power …
