Design Studies Suggested By An Abstract Model For Medical Information System, Jerome R. Cox Jr., Takayuki D. Kimura, P. Moore, Will D. Gillett, Mishell J. Stucki

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We have developed a formal model of a database system that is unusual in that it has the ability to represent information about its own structure and to insure semantic consistency. The model distinguishes general laws from instances of events and objects, but many of its mechanisms serve both categories of information. The model form a substrate upon which an information structure appropriate to neonatology is being developed. Some example queries are shown and a design study for an associative memory suggested by the model is described briefly.

Continuous Digital Simulation Of The Second-Order Slowly Varying Wave Drift Force, Bohdan W. Oppenheim, P. A. Wilson Sep 1980

Continuous Digital Simulation Of The Second-Order Slowly Varying Wave Drift Force, Bohdan W. Oppenheim, P. A. Wilson

Systems Engineering Faculty Works

A discussion is given on practical aspects of digital representation in time of the slowly oscillatory second-order wave drift force from a known force spectrum. The emphasis is placed on the computational efficiency and on the suitability of the simulation to a numerical integration of an equation of motion using a variable integration step size, where the force acts as the excitation of motion. The effect of approximating the original spectrum by a white spectrum is discussed. A sensitivity analysis is made to the range of frequencies of the spectra. The force time record is obtained by first generating at …

The experiment compares the process and outcome of face to face vs. computer mediated group problem solving discussions.

The objectives of this experiment are the following "basic research" questions:

  1. To gain quantified and detailed knowledge …

Overlay Recommendations For I 64: Rowan, Carter, And Boyd Counties, Gary W. Sharpe, Herbert F. Southgate Aug 1980

Overlay Recommendations For I 64: Rowan, Carter, And Boyd Counties, Gary W. Sharpe, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A method was developed in 1978 for designing asphaltic concrete overlays for flexible pavements. This procedure utilizes Kentucky's theoretical flexible pavement design curves, estimates of pavement fatigue from traffic data, estimates of subgrade strengths, and estimates of the structural capacity of the existing pavement. Overlay designs were recommended for the asphaltic concrete pavement sections of I 64 in Rowan, Carter, and Boyd Counties. Road Rater deflection data were used to estimate the subgrade strength and the effective worth of the pavement structures. Pavement rutting and roughness were also considered in determining the final overlay thicknesses.

Evaluation Of Reversible Lanes (Nicholasville Road; Lexington, Ky), Kenneth R. Agent, Jon D. Clark

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The study involved an evaluation of reversibIe lanes as a method of increasing traffic flow. A unique feature of the system was allowing Ieft turns during the period of reversible flow, which meant that the left-turn lanes had to be moved and the signal displays shifted during operation and without interrupting traffic flow. The evaluation involved a comparison of data taken before and after installation of the reversible lanes. Types of data included delays, volumes, accidents, speeds, traffic conflicts, fuel consumption, and environmental factors.

Installation of the reversible lanes resulted in a significant savings in travel time in the peak …

Safety Improvement Program For Toll Roads, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Joseph D. Crabtree

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report presents proposed safety improvements for Kentucky's toll roads. The primary methods of identifying needed improvements were an accident analysis and a field inventory. The accident analysis identified specific high-accident spots and sections. Also, accident rates were calculated for each toll road, and the types of accidents which had occurred in the 3-year period were summarized. A separate 10-year analysis of fatal accidents was made. The field inventory was used to identify roadway features which are now substandard and in need of upgrading. Also, high-accident spots and sections were investigated in the field. The benefits and costs for each …

Evaluation Of Zinc Sulphate Electrolytes Containing Certain Impurities And Additives By Cyclic Voltammetry, D. R. Fosnacht, Thomas J. O'Keefe Jul 1980

Evaluation Of Zinc Sulphate Electrolytes Containing Certain Impurities And Additives By Cyclic Voltammetry, D. R. Fosnacht, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The polarization characteristics of acid zinc sulphate electrolytes containing various amounts of germanium and cobalt were examined by cyclic voltammetry. The effects of zinc and acid concentration, temperature, and surface preparation were also investigated. Small concentrations of impurities are shown to cause measurable changes in polarization behavior. Levels as low as 0.02 mgl-1 Ge and 0.1 mgl-1 Co can be detected using this technique. The actual mechanism of impurity behavior is more clearly delineated using this technique and evaluation of the data from these tests indicate that germanium and cobalt form local galvanic cells. The results of these short-term tests …

Inversion Of The Nonlinear Equations Of Reflection Ellipsometry For Uniaxial Crystals In Symmetrical Orientations, M. Elshazly-Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1980

Inversion Of The Nonlinear Equations Of Reflection Ellipsometry For Uniaxial Crystals In Symmetrical Orientations, M. Elshazly-Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The complex ordinary (No) and extraordinary (Ne) refractive indices of an absorbing uniaxial crystal can be determined using reflection ellipsometry. The measurements are taken with the optic axis parallel and perpendicular to the crystal’s surface. The equations obtained are solved without resort to iterative methods; No and Ne are determined separately. Sixteen solution sets (No, Ne) are obtained and the correct solution can be easily identified. We present an optimum angle of incidence that minimizes the relative errors in No and Ne.

Ute Self-Determination In Setting Tribal Resource Development Policy, Herbert H. Fullerton, Mac Mckee, Roger D. Hansen Jul 1980

Ute Self-Determination In Setting Tribal Resource Development Policy, Herbert H. Fullerton, Mac Mckee, Roger D. Hansen

Reports

The Ute Indian Tribe of northeastern Utah has large land holdings rich in water and energy resources. Revenues from these sources have created capital that can potentially be used by the Tribe to further develop its resources and expand its agricultural and business enterprises. Realities, however, complicate this simple scenario in that the Tribal goals are broader than pure economic gain and that increased incomes may mean sacrifices in terms of these other goals. The Tribe faces the problem of how best to develop its water resources in a way that best meets its multiplicity of needs.

The research team …

Lower Mode Response Of Circular Cylinders In Cross-Flow, William W. Durgin, P. A. March, Paul J. Lefebvre

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Transverse amplitude responses of a circular cylinder in cross-flow were determined as a function of reduced velocities for a variety of spring constants and damping coefficients. Maxima were found at reduced velocities of 5 and 16, and were of comparable amplitude. The first resonance, designated the "fundamental mode, " was due to normal vortex street excitation of the spring-mass system. The second resonance, designated the "lower mode," occurred when the natural frequency was approximately one-third of the normal vortex shedding frequency. By assuming that the driving force was sinusoidal, it was possible to evaluate the lift coefficients at resonance. Lift …
