Modal Control Of An Unstable Periodic Orbit, William Wiesel, William Shelton
Modal Control Of An Unstable Periodic Orbit, William Wiesel, William Shelton
Faculty Publications
We apply Floquet theory to the problem of designing a control system for a satellite in an unstable periodic orbit. Expansion about a periodic orbit produces a time periodic linear system, which is augmented by a time periodic control term. We show that this can be done such that a) the application of control produces only inertial accelerations, b) positive real Poincare exponents are shifted into the left half-plane, and c) the shift of the exponent is linear with control gain. We apply these developments to an unstable orbit near the Earth-Moon L3 point perturbed by the Sun. Finally, …

Effects Of Myocardial Infarction On Catheter Defibrillation Threshold, Charles F. Babbs
Effects Of Myocardial Infarction On Catheter Defibrillation Threshold, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Because the automatic implantable defibrillator may be used in patients having ischemic heart disease, it is important to know whether myocardial ischemia changes the threshold for ventricular defibrillation under experimental conditions simulating automatic internal defibrillation. We determined changes in ventricular defibrillation threshold following coronary occlusion, using an electrode catheter designed for use with an automatic implantable defibrillator. Acute myocardial ischemia was produced without thoracotomy in 10 dogs (experimental group) by embolization with a plastic bead injected via a catheter into the left coronary artery. A control group of 4 dogs had only saline injected into the artery. Defibrillation threshold was …

Simple Methods For Determining The Accuracy Of Tumor Blood Flow Measurements Using Radioactive Microspheres In Rats, Rosanna C. Chan, Charles F. Babbs, Richard J. Vetter
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Two simple methods are presented that allow positive identification of the accuracy and precision of the microsphere technique and a quick verification of sphere entrapment in tumor vessels. A known flow of Ringer's solution from a motor-driven syringe is perfused through the rat's isolated systemic circulation from left ventricle to right atrium and collected in a funnel. Using this preparation, total blood flow in rats measured with radioactive microspheres injected into the left ventricle was 97% of actual flow. The coefficient of variation (standard deviation/mean) of the microsphere measurements was 0.22. In the same preparation, non-entrapment of microspheres in subcutaneous …
Improved Oxygen Delivery During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compressions, William D. Voorhees, Mark J. Niebauer, Charles F. Babbs
Improved Oxygen Delivery During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compressions, William D. Voorhees, Mark J. Niebauer, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The ability of a new modification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to deliver oxygen to tissues was evaluated. The method utilizes standard CPR techniques with the addition of manual abdominal compressions (100 mm Hg) interposed between chest compressions, and is termed interposed abdominal compression-CPR (IAC-CPR). Oxygen delivery was measured by a spirometer in a closed circuit designed to permit positive-pressure ventilation synchronized with mechanical chest compression. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 10 anesthetized dogs. In each dog, trials of IAC-CPR and standard CPR were alternated every five minutes during a 30-minute period. Arterial and central venous blood pressures, oxygen consumption, …

Relationship Of Blood Pressure And Flow During Cpr To Chest Compression Amplitude: Evidence For An Effective Compression Threshold, Charles F. Babbs, W D. Voorhees, K R. Fitzgerald, H R. Holmes, L A. Geddes
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was conducted to investigate the importance of the depth of chest compression in producing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in animals, as indicated by cardiac output and mean arterial blood pressure. Cardiac output was measured by a modified indicator dilution technique in 8 anesthetized dogs, 6 to 12 kg body weight, during repeated 2-minute episodes of electrically induced ventricular fibrillation and CPR provided by a mechanical chest compressor and ventilator (Thumper®). Chest compression exceeding a threshold value (x0) between 1.5 and 3.0 cm was required in each animal to produce measurable cardiac output. In particular, …

Unionid Mollusks Of The Missouri River On The Nebraska Border, Ellet Hoke
Unionid Mollusks Of The Missouri River On The Nebraska Border, Ellet Hoke
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
The Missouri River, bordering Nebraska, has previously been reported to be uninhabitable for unionid mollusks. Studies conducted in the Missouri River and its backwaters, primarily during 1981 and 1982. revealed the presence of thirteen species and subspecies of unionid mollusks. The apparent absence of any extensive prior unionid work in the Missouri River may explain the discrepancy between this and previous literature.
Effects Of Tillage On Soil Erosion In A Wheat-Fallow Rotation, Elbert C. Dickey, C. R. Fenster, J. M. Laflen, R. H. Mickelson
Effects Of Tillage On Soil Erosion In A Wheat-Fallow Rotation, Elbert C. Dickey, C. R. Fenster, J. M. Laflen, R. H. Mickelson
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Erosion from alternative tillage systems in winter wheat-fallow rotations was measured using a rainfall simulator. The Nebraska study, conducted at the High Plains Agricultural Laboratory, showed that during the fallow period between harvest and tillage, soil erosion was not affected by the tillage systems studied. However, erosion following tillage was different for the systems evaluated and moldboard plowing with the slope had the largest amount. The no-till system reduced erosion by about 95% during this period. Although contour plowing was effective in reducing erosion when compared to plowing with the slope, no differences were measured between with the slope and …

Yield Comparisons Between Continuous No-Till And Tillage Rotations, Elbert C. Dickey, Thomas Peterson, J. R. Gilley, L. N. Mielke
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Continuous use of no-till planting systems may result in reduced yields, especially on finer textured soils that tend to be poorly drained. Soil compaction and poor soil aeration have been identified as possible factors contributing to the lower yields. Research conducted to evaluate tillage rotations on these soils shows that periodic use of the moldboard plow can result in statistically higher yields as compared to continuous no till. However, use of chisel plow and disk tillage systems following three years of continuous no-till did not result in yield increases. A relationship between cone penetrometer index and yield indicates a trend …

Prediction Of The Current Density At An Electrode At Which Multiple Electrode Reactions Occur Under Potentiostatic Control, Ralph E. White, S. E. Lorimer, R. Darby
Faculty Publications
It is often desirable to be able to predict the total current density at an electrode when multiple electrochemical reactions occur there under potentiostatic control. It is also sometimes desirable to include the effect of ionic migration within the diffusion layer upon the predicted total (1) and partial current densities (2). A procedure for doing this can be illustrated by considering the rotating disk electrode (RDE) system and the associated potential distribution near the RDE as shown in Fig. 1 and 2.
An Analysis Of A Back Fed Porous Electrode For The Br2/Br Reaction, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White
An Analysis Of A Back Fed Porous Electrode For The Br2/Br Reaction, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
An experimental analysis of the Br2/Br– redox reaction in a porous back fed ruthenium-coated titanium electrode is described. A mathematical model of the steady-state process is presented. Nonlinear regression of the model against the experimental data gives physically meaningful parameter estimates; these parameters and the model provide a design equation for the porous electrode current as a function of specific surface area, bulk Br2 concentration, average total overpotential, and the Reynolds number. The design equation shows that the back fed electrode could reduce the loss of Br2 across the separator and the ohmic loss in …
Scientific Perspectives On Integrated Aquatic Resources Management Of The Colorado River, Larry J. Paulson
Scientific Perspectives On Integrated Aquatic Resources Management Of The Colorado River, Larry J. Paulson
Publications (WR)
When management requires water quality standards, we should establish standards in a scientific and logical manner to serve the long-term needs of the users. It was this very process that led to enactment of the Reclamation Act of 1902 and the Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1928 - legislation that still serves the needs of users in the Colorado River Basin. This process can work again if we can make the "tradeoffs" that are so vital in management of a multi-purpose river. In order to do this, however, we must first be able to identify "tradeoffs." This requires good scientific …

Three approaches to drought management are developed as generalized mathematical models. Each model is then applied to particular locations in Utah using the hydrologic/economic data from the 1976-77 drought. The modeling approaches include: (1) A multiple regression approach is used to quantify the changes in water use achieved by three common municipal sector rationing policies: (a) restrictions on time of outdoor use, (b) price increases, and (c) mandatory quantity restrictions (2) A model was presented for determing the optimal long term price schedule for rationing a stochastically variable water supply during summer peak demand season among groups of municipal water …

Comprehensive planning is an elusive ideal. The practical planner must sort the relevant information from the vast amounts of data that modern technology can collect. The objective of this study was to use the Upper Blackfoot watershed in the mountains of Southeastern Idaho as an arena for developing methods for construction, refinement, and application of indices needed to design land and water management schemes, compare alternatives, and influence the public in their uses of the area. A total of 21 uses were examined on 242 land units of a 160 square-mile area ranging in elevation from 6300 to 9000 feet …

Monitoring Of Groundwater Levels For Real‑Time Conjunctive Water Management, Richard C. Peralta, Vince Mazur, Paul Dutram
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Water users in the Arkansas Grand Prairie wish to maintain sufficient groundwater levels to: insure adequate groundwater reserves for time of drought, protect themselves from litigation caused by wells going dry, and insure a sustained yield. Achievement of these goals requires regular measurement of groundwater levels. Review of monitoring practice and technology indicates that spring and fall measurements taken over the entire area using steel tape and acoustic device is preferred for most long range planning. Continuous monitoring is indicated for critical parts of the region where saturated thicknesses are small. Desirable attributes of a data collection/transmission system for such …
