Designing And Installing Commercial Solar Pool Heating Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Douglass E. Root Jun 1983

Designing And Installing Commercial Solar Pool Heating Systems, Florida Solar Energy Center, Douglass E. Root

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Solar heating of swimming pools is an economically attractive utilization of Florida's abundant solar resource. The temperature requirement is lower than that of domestic or service water heating, lower than that for building heating and far lower than that for solar powered air conditioning. Florida's year-round mild and sunny climate allows swimming during much of the winter, so a properly heated pool is economically attractive.

Interfacial Electrical Properties Of Ion-Beam Sputter Deposited Amorphous Carbon On Silicon, A. Azim Khan, John A. Woollam, Y. Chung, B. Banks

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Amorphous, “diamond-like” Carbon films have been deposited on Si substrates, using ion-beam sputtering. The interfacial properties are studied using capacitance and conductance measurements. Data are analyzed using existing theories for interfacial electrical properties. The density of electronic states at the interface, along with corresponding time constants are determined, and the density of interface states is unusually low for an as yet unoptimized

Hydraulic Model Study Of Hyrum Dam Auxiliary Labyrinth Spillway, Kathleen L. Houston, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation, Division Of Research, Hydraulics Branch May 1983

Hydraulic Model Study Of Hyrum Dam Auxiliary Labyrinth Spillway, Kathleen L. Houston, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation, Division Of Research, Hydraulics Branch

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The updated IDF (inflow design flood) for Hyrum Reservoir could not be passed with the existing hydraulic structures. The labyrinth was the most economical alternative for an auxiliary spillway. The labyrinth spillway, a series of trapezoidal shapes in plan form, would provide the necessary spillway length and capacity within a comparatively small width. The spillway configuration was based on design curves developed in the Bureau of Reclamation Hydraulic Laboratory.

The 1:30 scale model included the upstream approach channel, the labyrinth spillway, and a transition section leading to a long sloping chute. The model confirmed the maximum discharge of the spillway …

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1981), Kenneth R. Agent May 1983

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1981), Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The primary objective of this study was to determine average accident statistics in Kentucky for 1981. Those statistics could then be used in Kentucky's high-accident location identification program. Similar statistics were determined in 1978 and 1980. The objective is to calculate rates on an annual basis to allow the most recently available data to be used as well as the possibility of combining several years of data or conducting trend analyses.

Average accident rates were calculated using several methods of classifying highways. A series of tables were prepared giving criteria that may be used to determine whether specific locations have …

A Checklist And Sample Specifications For Front End Loaders, Herpicc May 1983

A Checklist And Sample Specifications For Front End Loaders, Herpicc

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

Attached is a checklist and sample specifications for purchasing front end loaders for use in the maintenance of Indiana's local roads and streets.

This checklist and the sample specifications provide for individual preferences. They are not intended to dictate decisions or restrict bidding. If followed, they will assure a durable piece of maintenance equipment well suited for the uses placed on front end loaders by Indiana Counties, Cities and Towns.

A general observation of those with experience is that reducing specification requirements to obtain a lower first cost is nearly always a poor economic decision.

Time-Resolved Two-Dimensional Imaging Of Ground-State Species Using Laser-Induced Fluorescence, R. A. Dougal, P. F. Williams, D. C. Pease May 1983

Time-Resolved Two-Dimensional Imaging Of Ground-State Species Using Laser-Induced Fluorescence, R. A. Dougal, P. F. Williams, D. C. Pease

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

Laser-induced fluorescence has been employed to obtain two-dimensional images of the spatial distribution of a vapor in the ground state with nanosecond resolution. The method has a wide range of potential applications, as it can be used to observe any species which has energy levels accessible to tunable laser systems. In the application we describe, aluminum vapor was observed jetting from spark gap electrodes and diffusing throughout the gap volume.

Radio-Frequency-Excited Carbon Dioxide Metal Waveguide Laser, Jonathan Gary Grossman, Lee W. Casperson, O. M. Stafsudd May 1983

Radio-Frequency-Excited Carbon Dioxide Metal Waveguide Laser, Jonathan Gary Grossman, Lee W. Casperson, O. M. Stafsudd

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A new type of waveguide laser is described in which a single-surface concave metal waveguide also doubles as the grounded electrode in a radio-frequency-excited gaseous discharge. The laser’s output modes and spectrum have been studied theoretically and experimentally for cw CO₂ operation of the laser. Overall operating efficiency and mode stability are comparable with those of conventional dielectric waveguide CO₂ lasers, and advantages of the metal waveguide laser include convection cooling, intracavity mode control, and partial self-alignment.

A Heat Pump Assisted Shower, Jim Mcgovern May 1983

A Heat Pump Assisted Shower, Jim Mcgovern

Articles

An energy-efficient water-heating system for a shower is proposed consisting of a low-powered heat pump, a storage tank and an instantaneous heater which, it is felt, may yield a favourable overall cost, in addition to reducing the primary energy consumption. Some preliminary work has been carried out in exploring this concept. It was considered at the outset that an overall coefficient of performance (COP) of 2 should be readily achieved. Values close to this have been realised with the first experimental prototype.

Energy In Agriculture: Planning A House With An Energy Future, Clifford A. Flood, Blaine F. Parker, Donald G. Colliver

Agricultural Engineering Energy Series

If you are planning a new house, consider the following. Suppose the price of energy for residential space heating and domestic water heating doubles or triples during the next 10 years. Will your new house be prepared for such a future? Have you given the energy required to operate your home equal importance to building site, style, floor plans and construction materials?

Improved Structural Monitoring With Acoustic Emission Pattern Recognition, David W. Prine, Theodore Hopwood Ii Apr 1983

Improved Structural Monitoring With Acoustic Emission Pattern Recognition, David W. Prine, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A unique acoustic emission monitoring system originally developed for inprocess weld monitoring has been used to monitor fatigue crack growth in a highway bridge during normal traffic loading. The system was able to clearly and reliably detect the presence of fatigue cracks that were adjacent to a row of bolts. The results of the brief experiment show that the signal processing used in this AE system may allow drastic improvements in the ability of acoustic emission to reliably detect propagating bridge flaws under adverse conditions.

Development Of A Portable Retroreflectometer, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman Apr 1983

Development Of A Portable Retroreflectometer, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

There is a need for a portable retroreflectometer which can perform reflectivity measurements in the field . This could eliminate the need for subjective ratings or taking samples of materials from the field to test in the laboratory. This report describes the development of a portable retroflectometer (PRR).

A PRR was built with the objective of approximating the angles of incidence and divergence used in the ESNA Reflex-Photometer (ESNA). Tests showed a good relationship between readings taken with the PRR and ESNA. The recommendation was made that the PRR is suitable for use as a means of measuring reflectivity in …

The Photovoltaic Cell: History, Operation, Current Technology, Marc L. Luksetich Apr 1983

The Photovoltaic Cell: History, Operation, Current Technology, Marc L. Luksetich

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, practical applications of solar cells were of single crystal silicon material (Rauschenbach, 1980). In the mid 1970s, the U.S. Government actively began to subsidize solar cell development and use (Maycock & Stirewalt, 1981). This funding provided a major contribution for expanded research, development, and markets. Consequently, manufacturing and final-product costs have been reduced with a corresponding increase in solar cell efficiency (Merrigan, 1982). The main objective of this study was to analyze literature from photovoltaic cell manufacturers regarding their current production methods, materials, and uses, and to report the findings.

Shear Characteristics Of Motor Oils Conforming To The American Petroleum Institute's 1981 Engine Service Classification, D. Joseph Clausen Apr 1983

Shear Characteristics Of Motor Oils Conforming To The American Petroleum Institute's 1981 Engine Service Classification, D. Joseph Clausen

Graduate Research Papers

The problem was to determine if shear (slipperiness) characteristics differ between various SF motor oils. Oils tested met SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) lOw-40 viscosity requirements, and API (American Petroleum Institute) engine service classification requirements for 1981 SF quality motor oils.

Four basic types of oil were tested: (a) mineral; (b) synthetic; (c) friction modified; and (d) extended drain. A gravity powered device was designed and used as a testing apparatus to measure force needed to pull a weight across a lubricated surface.

Findings indicated that friction modified oils (Pennzoil P-Z-L and Arcographite) were the most slippery. Other oils tested, …

Gasification Of Densified Sludge And Wastepaper In A Downdraft Packed-Bed Gasifier, George Tchobanoglous, Nelson W. Sorbo, Samuel A. Vigil

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The co-disposal of densified sludge and wastepaper in a co-current flow packed bed gasifier represents new application of the thermal gasification process. Advantages of this technology include lower costs than other incineration or pyrolysis technologies, simple construction and operation, and the ability to use a variety of fuels including agricultural wastes and other biomass materials in addition to densified sludge and wastepaper.
