Screening Design Test For Cyclic Voltammetric Evaluation Of Zinc Sulfate Electrolyte, R. K. Singh, Thomas J. O'Keefe Jan 1985

Screening Design Test For Cyclic Voltammetric Evaluation Of Zinc Sulfate Electrolyte, R. K. Singh, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A statistical screening design program was conducted to determine the effects of certain operating parameters in the cyclic voltametric evaluation of zinc sulfate electrolyte. The variables studied included solution temperature, sulfuric acid and zinc concentrations, and scan rate. Solution temperature was found to be the most significant factor affecting the initial potential, followed by scan rate and zinc concentration. Based on screening design data, mathematical equations were developed to predict polarization behavior of addition-free zinc sulfate electrolytes. A few preliminary tests on the effect of impurities and organic additives, such as Sb(III) and glue, on potential, deposit morphology, and crystal …

An Analysis Of The Lyophilization Process Using A Sorption‐Sublimation Model And Various Operational Policies, M. J. Millman, Athanasios I. Liapis, J. M. Marchello Jan 1985

An Analysis Of The Lyophilization Process Using A Sorption‐Sublimation Model And Various Operational Policies, M. J. Millman, Athanasios I. Liapis, J. M. Marchello

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The freeze‐drying process is studied under various operational policies through the use of a sorption‐sublimation model. The operational policy that provides the shortest drying times keeps the pressure at its lowest value. The upper and lower heating plates are independently controlled so that the material constraints are encountered and held throughout the free water removal phase. Under certain conditions, and for the case of samples of small thickness, the sorbed water profiles may have segments whose bound water concentrations are higher than those at the start of the free water removal phase. It is shown that the criterion used in …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

WxSey thin films have been prepared by the spray pyrolysis and anodic electrodeposition of solutions of ammonium selenotungstate, (NH4)2WSe4, with y/x usually between two and three for the sprayed films and y x>>1 for the electrodeposited films. The sprayed films indicated regions of crystalline WSe2 and have optical absorbance spectra consistent with a mixture of WSe2, WSe3, and selenium. The electrodeposited films are totally amorphous, highly photoconductive, and have optical absorbance spectra typical of amorphous or vitreous selenium. The sprayed films transform into WO3 at temperatures greater than 350°C in the presence of oxygen wile the electrode-posited films tend …

Evaluation Of Miramat Under High Velocity Flows, C. Earl Israelsen, Frank W. Haws Jan 1985

Evaluation Of Miramat Under High Velocity Flows, C. Earl Israelsen, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Introduction: Newly constructed earth channels and steep cut and fill slopes on construction projects need temporary protection from water erosion until a protective cover of vegetation can be grown. In some instances the temporary protective measures can be left in position to serve as part of the permanent system. Various kinds of vegetative and chemical mulches are available for use as temporary control measures, and other materials such as jute, fiberglass roving, and excelsior blanket are also in use. However, for large volumes of flow and for high velocities, more substantial materials are required. One class of such materials is …

Writing A Scientific Paper Prior To The Research, Charles F. Babbs, Martha M. Tacker Jan 1985

Writing A Scientific Paper Prior To The Research, Charles F. Babbs, Martha M. Tacker

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The traditional approach to preparing a research report for publication is to begin writing after the study has been completed. We propose another approach- to write a "zeroth" draft before the study is begun. This approach helps to focus the investigator's attention during the planning stage on critical aspects of the study. The discipline of writing down the rationale, the methods, and the variety of possible outcomes and their significance helps to clarify the logic on which the study is based. If these are acceptable to all authors and colleagues in the zeroth draft, it is likely that the research …

An Inspiration-Triggered Delivery System For Oxygen Therapy Via A Nasal Cannula, Philip Charles Krause, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1985

An Inspiration-Triggered Delivery System For Oxygen Therapy Via A Nasal Cannula, Philip Charles Krause, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Therapy for severe chronic lung disease currently includes the administration of supplemental oxygen to prevent breathlessness and tissue hypoxia. Although effective, this therapy is unnecessarily costly, because oxygen is administered to the patient during expiration as well as inspiration. To eliminate this inefficiency, a delivery system that senses the inspiratory effort and delivers oxygen to the patient only during inspiration was developed. The 11  5  8-cm flow control unit attaches easily to a portable oxygen supply. The components of the system have an expected life of five years, and the 9-Volt battery provides power for about one month …
