Optimizing Warranty Policies For Remanufactured Products: When Should They Be Longer, Shorter, Or Identical To New Product Warranties?, Kunpeng Li, Jun-Yeon Lee
Optimizing Warranty Policies For Remanufactured Products: When Should They Be Longer, Shorter, Or Identical To New Product Warranties?, Kunpeng Li, Jun-Yeon Lee
Faculty Publications
Manufacturers adopt different warranty strategies for remanufactured products, offering shorter, identical, or longer warranty periods compared to new products. However, prior research has only focused on manufacturers offering either shorter or identical warranties. In addition, the existing literature has not captured the diminishing returns of warranties, i.e., as the warranty coverage increases, its incremental benefits begin to decrease but the costs continue to increase. To address these gaps, we develop an optimization model that jointly considers pricing and warranty decisions while accounting for warranty’s diminishing effect on consumer’s willingness to pay for remanufactured products. We show that all three observed …

Structural Dynamic Response Assessment Of Clt Wall Structure Systems In Wind-Only And Sequential Seismic–Wind Scenarios, Yunxiang Ma, Qingli Dai, Xiang Zhao
Michigan Tech Publications
Because of concentrated connection damage, the impact of sequential hazards on CLT shear wall systems is much more severe than that on traditional concrete and steel structures considering ductile component behaviors. The present paper evaluated the dynamic response of CLT wall structures in wind-only and sequential seismic–wind scenarios and compared the structural dynamic responses and damage levels of different CLT wall systems. The structural models were established separately based on an SOM benchmark structure, a SOFIE project three-story CLT shear wall structure, and a PT CLT wall platform structure from the NHERI Tall Wood project. The equivalent fluctuating wind load …

A Novel Optuna-Vmd-Ml Framework For Enhanced Settlement Prediction Of Buildings Around Foundation Pits, Jing Zhang, Zhenlin Wang, Shiyu Sheng, Sifan Shen, Chuang He, Huafeng Shan, Haijie He, Li Ai
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
The prediction of building settlement around foundation pit is of vital importance to ensure the safety and stability of urban construction projects. However, current predictions of buildings surrounding foundation pit face numerous challenges. Therefore, this study proposes a framework that integrates Optuna-based hyperparameter optimization, variational mode decomposition (VMD), and machine learning (ML) for accurate and timely settlement prediction in practical engineering scenarios, referred to as the Optuna–VMD–ML framework. Optuna is employed to tune the hyperparameters of both VMD and the ML models; the Optuna-tuned VMD decomposes the settlement time series into mode components, which are then used to train the …

Safe-Calibrated Tcn–Transformer Transfer Learning For Reliable Battery Soh Estimation Under Lab-To-Field Domain Shift, Ehab Bayoumi
Safe-Calibrated Tcn–Transformer Transfer Learning For Reliable Battery Soh Estimation Under Lab-To-Field Domain Shift, Ehab Bayoumi
Mechanical Engineering
Battery state-of-health (SoH) estimation is central to transportation electrification because it conditions safety limits, warranty accounting, power capability management, and long-horizon fleet optimization. Although deep temporal architectures can achieve high laboratory accuracy, field deployment is frequently limited by laboratory (Lab)-to-field (L2F) domain shift that alters input statistics, feature definitions, and noise regimes. Under such a shift, predictors may remain strongly monotonic, preserving degradation ordering and become operationally unreliable due to systematic output distortion (e.g., compression/warping of the SoH scale). A deployment-complete L2F transfer learning pipeline is presented, built around a gated Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN)–Transformer fusion backbone, domain-specific adapters and …

Bicuspid Valve Closure And Backflow Prevention: Role Of Leaflet Geometry, Badr Kauoi, A Bou Orm, P Navet, James W. Baish, Lance Munn
Faculty Journal Articles
Bicuspid valves with crescent-shaped leaflets are found in lymphatic vessels and veins, where their primary function is to prevent reflux and ensure unidirectional flow toward the heart. These valves are passive, and their functionality emerges spontaneously from a complex interplay between the properties of the valve leaflets and the flow patterns developing within the vessel sinus region surrounding the valve. The main function of the valves is to limit retrograde flow, or reflux, but the optimal valve structure has not been well characterized. Here we investigate numerically how the length of the leaflets affects the valve efficiency in preventing reflux. …
Understanding Agtech Adoption: Evidence From The Farm Tech Adoption Challenge 2025, Ankit Chandra, Mark Stone
Understanding Agtech Adoption: Evidence From The Farm Tech Adoption Challenge 2025, Ankit Chandra, Mark Stone
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers
The Farm Tech Adoption Challenge (FTAC) examined how farmers evaluate emerging agricultural technologies through structured interactions with startups. Farmers assessed solutions based on their on-farm challenges and indicated adoption decisions. Results showed that adoption was driven by how well technologies addressed economic pressure, risk reduction, and operational simplicity. Startups aligned with these priorities were more likely to gain traction, with five out of nine receiving farmer commitments for adoption. However, adoption also depended on clear economic value, field validation, and system integration. Overall, the findings suggest that the primary bottleneck in agtech is not the lack of relevant technologies, but …

This study presents a high-performance piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) based on aluminum-doped zinc oxide (Al:ZnO) nanorods synthesized via a novel sonochemical method. This rapid, cost-effective, and reproducible approach enables the synthesis of ZnO nanorods (ZnO NRs) under ambient conditions. The PENG, fabricated on a 177 µm flexible Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, benefits from optimized aluminum doping, enhancing the output voltage. Structural analyses conducted using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that the synthesized ZnO nanorods possessed a high degree of crystallinity. The synthesis process was carefully fine-tuned to avoid …

Augmented Reality (AR) is often promoted as a solution to the cognitive and physical demands of traditional Teach Pendant (TP) programming for collaborative robots. Although prior work has suggested advantages of the AR interface, many evaluations have been limited in scope and may not fully represent the complexities of real-world manufacturing tasks. This study compares the performance of an AR interface to that of a standard TP interface for manufacturing assembly tasks of varying difficulty. In a between-groups study, one group of operators completed standardized assembly tasks using the TP interface, while a separate group used the AR interface instead. …
Impact Of Urban Roadway Work Zones On Road Users And Other Stakeholders, Lyndsey Renee Harris
Impact Of Urban Roadway Work Zones On Road Users And Other Stakeholders, Lyndsey Renee Harris
Lyles School of Civil Engineering Graduate Student Reports
As urban populations continue to rise at an unprecedented rate, the need for highly maintained infrastructure in cities -- buildings, utilities, and transportation networks -- has become increasingly critical. An urban work zone refers to a designated area within a city where roadway construction, maintenance, or rehabilitation activities are taking place. These zones are typically characterized by high traffic volumes, complex roadway networks, and proximity to residential, institutional, and commercial land uses. Urban work zones often involve lane closures, detours, reduced speed limits, and temporary traffic control measures to ensure safety for road workers and road users. Due to the …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Many critical raw materials (CRM) necessary in the transition to carbon-neutral energy reside in the waste streams of mining projects, as they are by-products and often not recovered alongside the primary metal. This work aims to document (i) the loss and potential recovery of by-product metals during the host commodity processing and (ii) the consequences of non-recovery, via a multi-scale risk–reward analysis. The information on the deportment of by-product metals through processing circuits is crucial for treating them as a resource, without which they risk near-permanent loss when treated as 'waste'. We review the deportment of tellurium and selenium as …

Nanostructured metal hydrides have garnered interest in their potential to store hydrogen safely and effectively as an energy carrier. By partially substituting lanthanum (La) with cerium (Ce), the structure of lanthanum pentanickel (LaNi5) was maintained to create a novel encapsulated La–Ce–Ni-based metal hydride (La0.6Ce0.4Ni5). The incorporation of metal-polymer composites can protect metal hydrides from oxidation and enhance cyclic stability. Carbon-based materials such as graphene and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) not only store hydrogen but also improve the reaction kinetics and address thermal management issues. This study presents La0.6Ce0.4Ni …

The efficacy of hydrophobic ocular drugs is significantly hindered by their low bioavailability, for which poor water solubility is a major contributing factor. In this work, we synthesized pilocarpine-derived ionic liquid [Pilo-OEG] Cl (PO) and evaluated its cosolvent properties for the codelivery of the hydrophobic antiglaucoma drug brimonidine (BM) for glaucoma therapy. Pilocarpine was quaternized with 2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy) ethoxy] ethanol in a one-pot reaction to yield PO, and its structure was confirmed using 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy methods and further characterized for its rheological property and thermal stability. The HET-CAM assay and cell viability study showed that PO was …

Layer-Wise Printing Parameter Optimization For Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Chaoran Dou, Rongxuan Wang, Raghav Gnanasambandam, Jianzhi Li, Zhenyu James Kong
Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a transformative technology that enables the fabrication of complex geometries layer by layer. However, metal parts produced via AM processes such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) are prone to various defects, including porosity and deformation. These defects often result from suboptimal printing parameter settings. Traditional approaches typically aim to reduce defects by optimizing a fixed set of parameters for the entire part. However, such methods do not account for layer-wise variations in printing conditions caused by changes in geometry, heat transfer, and re-heating effects. While optimizing parameters for each layer could improve part quality, it …

Potential And Chloride Concentration As Thresholds For Crevice Corrosion Initiation In Ss 316l, Y Shorrab, R S. Lillard
University Research
This work investigated the relationship between crevice chloride concentration ([Cl−]) and the potential necessary for initiation in stainless steel 316L (SS 316L). Real-time fluorescence measurements were used to measure [Cl−] inside SS 316L crevice assemblies as a function of bulk [Cl−] and potential. Crevice initiation at potentials slightly less than or equal to the bulk repassivation potential was associated with chloride transport, owing to passive dissolution, and an increase in the crevice [Cl−]. Once the [Cl−] within the crevice increased to the concentration necessary to initiate SS 316L pitting at the applied potential, crevice corrosion was initiated. For example, in …

Patient-specific microphysiological models have become a valuable tool for broad applications, revolutionizing biomedical research. However, limitations persist, with functional vasculature being a significant challenge. With the discovery of ETV2's determinant role in specifying EC lineages during differentiation, researchers have adopted techniques involving ETV2 overexpression to produce h-iECs more efficiently and consistently. Here, we generated multiple h-iPSC lines with inducible ETV2 expression, and subsequently differentiated them into h-iECs, which were validated functionally and by key endothelial markers and RNA-seq analysis. These cells are capable of reproducibly self-organizing into stable microvascular networks (MVNs) in a microfluidic chip, forming lumenized and functional vessels …

Catechol offers switchable adhesion in response to electrochemical redox reaction. However, electrochemistry requires water for effective proton transport, but water weakens adhesive performance. Here, we incorporate proton and electron conducting elements (sulfonic acid-containing monomer and multiwalled carbon nanotube, respectively) into a water-free catechol-based adhesive to create a high-strength adhesive that is also susceptible to electrochemical control. These additions increase the proton and electrical conductivity by over 100-fold. The adhesive also exhibits elevated lap shear adhesion strength (4.6 MPa) to metal substrates and outperforms a commercial epoxy glue. Under mild electrical stimulation (9 V), the adhesive strength decreases by over 90%. …

Interfacial Chemistry Involved In Selective Separation Of Nmc/Lmo And Lco/Lmo Binary Cathode Materials By Froth Flotation Using Oleic Acid, Richard Kofi Oboh, Kaiwu Huang, Seoung Bum Son, Lei Pan
Michigan Tech Publications
The variability in cathode compositions within recycled lithium-ion battery (LIB) feedstocks poses a significant challenge to efficient downstream refining processes. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using froth flotation with oleic acid as a collector to selectively separate lithium nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide (NMC) and lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) from lithium manganese oxide (LMO) materials. Laboratory-scale flotation tests achieved an 80% separation efficiency in a single stage, producing a froth product with >90% purity of NMC/LCO at approximately 90% yield. Concurrently, the LMO materials were enriched in the sink product with ∼90% purity and ∼90% yield. This approach was further validated using …

Comparison Of The Impact Of Probabilistic Versus Deterministic Ground Motions On Structural Responses Of A Steel Moment Building In Salt Lake City, Utah, O. Murphy, M. Zaker Esteghamati, B. R. Cox
Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
Earthquakes on the Wasatch Fault pose a significant hazard to Utah’s people and built environment. Code-based seismic design of civil infrastructure in Utah is governed by ground motions determined from regional probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). However, with a large earthquake overdue along several segments of the Wasatch Fault, there is growing concern among Utah engineers that PSHA-based ground motions are significantly lower than those from a deterministic scenario. This study compares the structural responses of a four-story steel moment frame in Salt Lake City, Utah, under two ground-motion sets derived from risk-targeted probabilistic and deterministic seismic-hazard analyses. The preliminary …

Electric vehicles (EVs) emit substantially fewer air pollutants than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. However, the continuous increase in electricity demand from the power grid for EV charging, resulting from the growing adoption and total vehicle miles traveled, leads to higher greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. This study presents a predictive analysis of energy sector greenhouse gas emissions from EV charging at the regional level across the United States under various projection scenarios of technology costs, fuel prices, demand growth, and electricity sector policies. The predictive modeling of greenhouse gas emissions from EV charging is performed using a …
A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of Cognitive Overload In Manufacturing Engineers During Online Training In An Industrial Environment, Sarah J. May
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore experiences of cognitive overload among engineers in manufacturing during digital training in industrial environments. Engineers in manufacturing manage substantial physical and cognitive demands in order to maintain safe and efficient industrial environments. In addition to these responsibilities, engineers are often expected to engage in digital training within active work settings, frequently without physical or cognitive separation from job-related tasks. A qualitative research design was employed, with data collected from 10 participants and analyzed through triangulation and thematic coding. Data collection methods included a qualitative questionnaire, individual interviews, and a letter-writing …

Despite the increasing interest in polymer electrolyte-based zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), their development is still in its early stages due to various challenges. In this study, we investigated three promising polymer electrolytes: CSAM (carboxyl methyl chitosan with acrylamide monomer), PAM (polyacrylamide monomer hydrogel electrolyte), and p-PBI (phosphate-doped polybenzimidazole solid electrolyte) with Zn(ClO4)2 and Zn(OTf)2, as electrolytes for zinc-ion batteries. The p-PBI solid electrolyte showed high mechanical stability and improved resistance to short-circuiting during cycling. The presence of carboxyl groups in …

Purpose
Advanced engineering tools such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are rarely introduced in K12 education despite their relevance in modeling engineering systems. This study evaluates whether K12 students can meaningfully engage with these traditional graduate-level methods when applied to cardiovascular flows and delivered through structured modules.
Methods
A 5-day full-time summer class was designed and enrolled 13 secondary students (grades 9–11) to introduce them to 3D printing, coding, PIV, medical image segmentation, and CFD modeling. Students participated in both experimental and computational activities and completed two evaluation forms assessing learning outcomes, instructional methods, challenges, …
