A Compiler For A Two-Dimensional Programming Language, Julie Wing Kam Choi Jul 1986

A Compiler For A Two-Dimensional Programming Language, Julie Wing Kam Choi

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A visual programming language is presented. This language uses interactive graphics to convey notion such as subroutine, recursion, block structure, parallel and serial processing to school children. Currently the system is interpreter based. To overcome the inefficiency of the interpreter based system, a compiler is implemented for this language. This report gives an overview of the compiler and the details about the parser, semantic analyzer and the code generator. Finally, a performance comparison between the interpreter based system and the compiler based system is given.

Economic Analyses Of Millings, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Economic analyses were made using 1984 and 1985 contract bid data. Data were identified as to who retained ownership. Recommendations as to who retains ownership are made based upon factors prevalent for a specific candidate pavement and other circumstances.

Relationship Between The P And S Fresnel Reflection Coefficients Of An Interface Independent Of Angle Of Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1986

Relationship Between The P And S Fresnel Reflection Coefficients Of An Interface Independent Of Angle Of Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The Fresnel reflection coefficients rp and rs of p- and s-polarized light at the planar interface between two linear isotropic media are found to be interrelated by (rs - rp)/(1 - rsrp) = cos 2β, independent of the angle of incidence ø, where tan2β = ∊ and ∊ is the (generally complex) ratio of dielectric constants of the media of refraction and incidence. This complements another relation (found earlier), (r2s - rp)/(rs - rsrp) = …

Agenda: Getting A Handle On Hazardous Waste Control, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Getting a Handle on Hazardous Waste Control (Summer Conference, June 9-10)

The conference chairman was University of Colorado School of Law professor Lawrence J. MacDonnell.

During the past ten years Congress has made the regulation of hazardous waste a priority. This conference focuses on the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, as amended in 1984, and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.

This conference attracted about 100 registrants from 16 states plus the District of Columbia. John G. Welles, Regional Director for EPA Region 8, presented a luncheon address.

Microcomputer Solid Waste Financial Model, Samuel A. Vigil, Jane A. Zevely Jun 1986

Microcomputer Solid Waste Financial Model, Samuel A. Vigil, Jane A. Zevely

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Applications of a microcomputer based solid waste financial model will be described. The model is written as an overlay to the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program. It makes use of the Lotus 1-2-3 macro programming capabilities and is menu driven, requiring minimal computer skills for use. The model allows engineers to estimate costs for recycling centers, waste-to-energy plants, and landfills. Outputs include summary tables of operational and capital costs, as well as a 20 year proforma income statement. The model was developed for the California Waste Management Board, an agency of the State of California, and will be distributed by them.

Evaluation Of Snowplowable Marker Installations, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman Jun 1986

Evaluation Of Snowplowable Marker Installations, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The first large-scale contracts for the installation of snowplowable markers were awarded in 1984 and 1985. Stimsonite 96 and recessed markers were installed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the installations. Durability and reflectivity results show that both the recessed markers and Stimsonite 96 markers have performed effectively as snowplowable markers. The recessed markers should continue to be used only on four-lane highways constructed to high geometric standards with the Stimsonite 96 markers installed on the majority of highways.

Progressive Coding And Transmission Of Digital Diagnostic Pictures, Sharaf E. Elnahas, Kou-Hu Tsou, Jerome R. Cox, Rexford L. Hill, R. Gilbert Jost

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In radiology, as a result if the increased utilization of digital imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), over a third of the images produced in a typical radiology department are currently in digital form, and this percentage is steadily increasing, Image compression provides a means for the economical storage and efficient transmission of these diagnostic pictures. The level of coding distortion than can be accepted for clinical diagnosis purposes is not yet well-defined. In this paper we introduce some constraints on the design of existing transform codes in order to achieve progressive image transmission …

Infiltration Into Decomposed Granite Soils; Numerical Modeling, Applications And Some Laboratory Observations, A. W. Jayawardena, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper describes the outcome of a study on rain infiltration into decoposed granite which is one of the two main types of soils found in Hong Kong. It consists of the development and verification of a finite element based numerical model which has general applicability for flow through unsaturated porous media, application of the model for predicting moisture movement in an artificial slope made out of reconstituted decomposed granite and some laboratory observations including the estimation of soil hydraulic parameters.
