Belief Maintenance Systems: Initial Prototype Specification, Roseanne M. Fulcomer, William E. Ball, John P. Tadlock Jan 1987

Belief Maintenance Systems: Initial Prototype Specification, Roseanne M. Fulcomer, William E. Ball, John P. Tadlock

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A fundamental need in future information systems is an effective method of accurately representing and monitoring dynamic, real-world situations inside a computer. Information is represented using an Extended Open World Assumption (EOWA), in which the data are explicitly true or false. Reasoning within the EOWA is done through the use of a dynamic dependency net which only represents those beliefs and justifications that are both currently valid and in current use. In this paper, we present definitions and uses of the EOWA and dynamic dependency net in our current research of developing a database with which we can use deductive …

Statistical Analysis Of A Compound Power-Law Model For Repairable Systems, Max Engelhardt, Lee J. Bain Jan 1987

Statistical Analysis Of A Compound Power-Law Model For Repairable Systems, Max Engelhardt, Lee J. Bain

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conclusions - A compound (mixed) Poisson distribution is sometimes used as an alternative to the Poisson distribution for count data. Such a compound distribution, which has a negative binomial form, occurs when the population consists of Poisson distributed individuals, but with intensities which have a gamma distribution. A similar situation can occur with a repairable system when failure intensities of each system are different. A more general situation is considered where the system failures are distributed according to nonhomogeneous Poisson processes having Power Law intensity functions with gamma distributed intensity parameter. If the failures of each system in a population …

Simultaneous System Identification And Decision-Directed Detection And Estimation Of Jump Inputs To Linear Systems, Wynn C. Stirling Jan 1987

Simultaneous System Identification And Decision-Directed Detection And Estimation Of Jump Inputs To Linear Systems, Wynn C. Stirling

Faculty Publications

A decision-directed approach is presented for analyzing linear systems with unknown jump inputs. The system model parameters are estimated using a Kalman filter, and an empirical Bayes detection procedure is introduced to set the detector parameters, resulting in a decision-directed generalized likelihood ratio test coupled with recursive system parameter estimation. Monte Carlo results are presented to validate the performance of the algorithm.

A New Approach To Signal Registration With The Emphasis On Variable Time Delay Estimation, Mohamad Namazi, John A. Stuller Jan 1987

A New Approach To Signal Registration With The Emphasis On Variable Time Delay Estimation, Mohamad Namazi, John A. Stuller

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Signal Registration is Concerned with the Problem of Estimating a Varying Displacement between Two Random Processes. We Approach Signal Registration Here as a Recursive Demodulation Problem in Which the Recursion is between Signal Estimations and Displacement Estimation. Special Attention is Given to the Problem of Estimating a Variable Time Delay. Thus, We Present New Algorithms for Estimating D(T) from Received Processes:

r1(t) = s(t) + n1(t)

R2(t) = s(t - D(t)) +n2(t)

Where s [Formula Omitted] is Signal and n1 (•) and n2 (•) Are Noise. Simulation Results Are Presented …

Maximum-Likelihood Estimation Of Time-Varying Delay-Part I, John A. Stuller Jan 1987

Maximum-Likelihood Estimation Of Time-Varying Delay-Part I, John A. Stuller

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This Paper Presents, for the First Time, the Exact Theoretical Solution to the Problem of Maximum-Likelihood (ML) Estimation of Time-Varying Delay d(t) between a Random Signal s(t) Received at One Point in the Presence of Uncorrelated Noise, and the Time-Delayed, Scaled Version as(t - d(t)) of that Signal Received at Another Point in the Presence of Uncorrelated Noise. the Signal is Modeled as a Sample Function of a Nonstationary Gaussian Random Process and the Observation Interval is Arbitrary. the Analysis of This Paper Represents a Generalization of that of Knapp and Carter [1], Who Derived the ML Estimator for the …

Stability Of Polynomials Under Correlated Coefficient Perturbations., M. K. Saridereli, Frank J. Kern Jan 1987

Stability Of Polynomials Under Correlated Coefficient Perturbations., M. K. Saridereli, Frank J. Kern

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The robust stability of polynomials with respect to real parameter variations is investigated. The coefficients of the polynomial are assumed to be linear functions of several real parameters. An algorithm to calculate the maximum allowable variations of the parameters so the roots still remain in prescribed regions of the complex plane is presented. Examples are given to illustrate the method.

Robust Control Of A Csi-Fed Induction Motor Drive System, Rajiva Prakash, Vittal S. Rao, Frank J. Kern Jan 1987

Robust Control Of A Csi-Fed Induction Motor Drive System, Rajiva Prakash, Vittal S. Rao, Frank J. Kern

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An application of modern control theory to the control of a current-source-inverter (CSI) fed induction motor drive system is presented. A linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control scheme is developed in which the Kaiman filter is tuned for high robustness by a method of Doyle and Stein. The design is carried out for a sample system, and the robustness analysis and computer simulation results are included. A Mathematical Model For The Initial Corrosion Rate Of A Porous Layer On A Rotating Disk Electrode, William E. Ryan, Ralph E. White, S. L. Kelly Jan 1987

A Mathematical Model For The Initial Corrosion Rate Of A Porous Layer On A Rotating Disk Electrode, William E. Ryan, Ralph E. White, S. L. Kelly

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is presented for the initial corrosion rate of a porous layer on a rotating disk electrode. The model is used to predict the corrosion potential and corrosion current density for a porous electrode made of pure iron in aerated caustic solutions. The dependence of these predictions on some of the properties of the porous layer is presented. It is shown that the corrosion rate depends significantly on the specific surface area of the porous electrode.

Comment On "Orientation, Alignment, And Hyperfine Effects On Dissociation Of Diatomic Molecules To Open Shell Atoms", Mark D. Havey, Linda L. Vahala

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A recent paper in this journal [Y. B. Band e t a l., J. Chem. Phys. 8 4, 3762 (1986)] reported parameters describing orientation and alignment produced, in an axial recoil limit, by one photondissociation of diatomic molecules. Reported also were values, applicable to the resonance transitions of the alkali atoms, for orientation and alignment depolarization coefficients. Most of the numerical values reported for the coefficients were incorrect, in some cases by as much as a factor of 2. We report a tabulation of correct depolarization coefficients applicable to the resonance transitions of common alkali isotopes. Further, the coefficients …

Improving Crystallographic Macromolecular Images: The Real-Space Approach, A. D. Podjarny, T. N. Bhat, Martin Zwick Jan 1987

Improving Crystallographic Macromolecular Images: The Real-Space Approach, A. D. Podjarny, T. N. Bhat, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Macromolecular crystallographicy is a unique tool for imaging the structures of proteins and nucleic acids. Images are obtained from the Fourier transform of the diffraction pattern of the crystal by use of X-ray, neutron, and / or electron scattering. When X-ray and neutron scattering are used only diffraction amplitudes are experimentally measured, and phases have to be obtained. Multiple isomorphous replacement (MIR) has been the technique of choice for solving this phase problem in the determination of most macromolecular structures. Unfortunately, the method is extremely time consuming, especially when compared with the solution techniques available for small molecules; moreover, structure …
