Sorption Of Binary Mixtures Of Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocyclic Compounds On Subsurface Materials, John M. Zachara, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Christina E. Cowan, Berta L. Thomas
Sorption Of Binary Mixtures Of Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocyclic Compounds On Subsurface Materials, John M. Zachara, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Christina E. Cowan, Berta L. Thomas
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Single and binary solute sorption of pyridine, quinoline, and acridine has been investigated on two low organic carbon subsurface materials with similar properties but different equilibrium pH when saturated with water. Single solute sorption for all compounds is higher in the acidic soil as compared to the basic soil, reflecting stronger sorption of the protonated organic cations. The protonated species exhibit high selectivity for the exchange complex at low aqueous concentration with selectivity increasing with ring number. Binary sorption experiments with quinoline/pyridine and quinoline/acridine demonstrate that competitive sorption occurs between compounds in the acidic subsoil where the protonated compound species …

Applications Of The Semiclassical Spectral Method To Nuclear, Atomic, Molecular, And Polymeric Dynamics, M. L. Koszykowski, G. A. Pfeffer, D. W. Noid
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Nonlinear dynamics plays a dominant role in a variety of important problems in chemical physics. Examples are unimolecular reactions, infrared multiphoton decomposition of molecules, the pumping process of the gamma ray laser, dissociation of vibrationally excited state-selected van der Waals’s complexes, and many other chemical and atomic processes. The present article discusses recent theoretical studies on the quasi-periodic and chaotic dynamical aspects of vibrational-rotational states of atomic, nuclear, and molecular systems using the semiclassical spectral method (SSM). We note that the coordinates, momenta, and so on, are found using classical mechanics in the studies included in this review. Consequently, certain …

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
The concentrations of the heavy metals- copper, chromium, lead, zinc- in the biota of the Missouri River were measured at a control site upstream of Sioux City and at a site downstream of the city. Bioconcentration factors for each of the metals were calculated for fish, periphyton, and invertebrates, and the concentrations of metals in the river sediments were measured.
Concentrations of the same metals were measured in the sediment, water, periphyton, invertebrates, zooplankton, and fish of Snyder's Bend Lake. Bioconcentration factors were calculated for each of the biological communities and were found to be very similar to those found …
Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Motion Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, J. Baumann
Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Motion Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, J. Baumann
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper considers the relationship between the three-position motion generation problem and the solution space for planar four-bar mechanisms. After one half of the basic four bar had been selected, two infinities of solutions still remained. These solutions are mapped in a plane to determine where the particular types of mechanisms occur. A contour is then generated in the mapping plane which joins together all solutions which share a common characteristic in regard to their link lengths. This same contour can be displayed in the solution space and in the Cartesian plane in which the motion generation is defined. Significant …

Automated Acoustic Intensity Measurements And The Effect Of Gear Tooth Profile On Noise, William J. Atherton, Adam Pintz, David G. Lewicki
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Acoustic intensity measurements were made at NASA Lewis Research Center on a spur gear test apparatus. The measurements were obtained with the Robotic Acoustic Intensity Measurement System developed by Cleveland State University. This system provided dense spatial positioning, and was calibrated against a high quality acoustic intensity system. The measured gear noise compared gearsets having two different tooth profiles. The tests evaluated the sound field of the different gears for two speeds and three loads. The experimental results showed that gear tooth profile had a major effect on measured noise. Load and speed were found to have an effect on …

Conservation Tillage: Perceived And Actual Use, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, Bryn J. Dolesh, Lisa A. Brown, S. Kay Rockwell
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A mail survey of farmers in Nebraska showed their perceived use of conservation tillage was about 55%. However, using the 30% residue cover criterion that the Conservation Tillage Information Center uses to define conservation tillage, a field survey of seven counties in 1984 showed that actual use of conservation tillage was less than 5%. Fewer than 20% of the producers surveyed had more than 20% residue cover remaining after tillage and planting. The field survey also showed disk tillage systems were used by almost 70% of the producers. The moldboard plow was used by only 15% of the producers, thus …

This paper considers the relationship between the three-position function generation problem and the solution space for planar four bar mechanisms. The two infinities of solutions possible are mapped in a plane to determine the locations where particular types of mechanisms occur. It is possible to generate a contour in the mapping plane which joins together all solutions which possess a common characteristic in regard to their link lengths. This same contour can be displayed in the solution space to ascertain the overall characteristics of potential solutions to the design problem. A numerical example is used for illustrative purposes, but the …

Microstructural Inhomogeneity In Sintered Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3‐Pbtio3 Based Dielectrics, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The sintering behavior and microstructural development of dielectric ceramics based on Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐PbTiO3 solid solutions are greatly affected by the formation of a liquid phase at ∼ 1290°C. Prolonged sintering at and above this temperature gives rise to an excessive PbO loss and the resultant variation in composition leads to an inhomogeneous microstructure. The inhomogeneity is characterized by the formation of a dense, localized region containing a PbO‐rich liquid near the surface with a porous interior region in the bulk of the sample. Modelling Earthquake Ground Motions In Seismically Active Regions Using Parametric Time Series Methods, G. W. Ellis, A. S. Çakmak, J. Ledolter
Modelling Earthquake Ground Motions In Seismically Active Regions Using Parametric Time Series Methods, G. W. Ellis, A. S. Çakmak, J. Ledolter
Engineering: Faculty Publications
Strong motion accelerograms can be efficiently modelled using time series analysis. Because of the nonstationarity of accelerograms, transformations must first be applied to stabilize the variance and frequency content. An ARMA model can then be fit to the stabilized series. By analyzing a large number of accelerograms in California, these ARMA and transform parameters have been related to physical variables. Thus it is possible to generate simulated ground motions in the area studied. The validity of the modelling process is measured by comparing the simulations and their frequency spectra to actual records.
Bridge Decks And Overlays, James H. Havens, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Edgar E. Courtney
Bridge Decks And Overlays, James H. Havens, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Edgar E. Courtney
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The report presents a historical perspective of the Transportation Cabinet's bridge deck construction and maintenance efforts directed toward increasing bridge deck durability.
Bridge decks crack in specific patterns that primarily depend upon bridge designs. Normal deck cracking is due to load-induced and thermal effects. Each type of cracking has a distinct pattern.
One-hundred and nineteen experimental bridge deck overlays were inspected. Included were 9 membrane bridges, 87 latex concrete overlays and 23 low-slump overlays. The overlays had been placed originally on both new and existing bridge decks on various routes throughout the state. Most of the overlays were rated in …

Thermomechanical Design Criteria For Zr02-Y203 Coated Surfaces, J. Padovan, Benjamin T.F. Chung, Glen E. Mcdonald, Robert C. Hendricks
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Thermocycling of ceramic-coated turbomachine components produces high thermomechanical stresses that are mitigated by plasticity and creep but aggravated by oxidation, with residual stresses exacerbated by all three. These residual stresses, coupled with the thermocyclic loading, lead to high compressive stresses that cause the coating to spall. In the paper a ceramic-coated gas path seal is modeled with consideration given to creep, plasticity, and oxidation. The resulting stresses and possible failure modes are discussed.

Automated Data Acquisition For Low-Volume Road Inventory And Management, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Gary W. Sharpe, John W. Hutchinson, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Local governments need suitable inventories and condition surveys to accurately determine and prioritize their funding needs. An efficient method of performing an inventory of the roads and subsequently determining the condition of major system components is to use an automated data-acquisition system to measure and record essential data. The data may be collected and processed by a central inventory management group. The inventory should include pavement characteristics, roadway geometries, and roadside features. Pavement condition may include structural integrity, road roughness, and skid resistance. Roadway geometries include horizontal curvature, length, width, superelevation, and grade. Roadside features include signing, intersections, guardrails, and …

Evaluation Of 1985 Aashto Flexible Pavement Design Equations And Nomographs, Herbert F. Southgate, Gary W. Sharpe, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The 1985 AASHTO nomograph and equations for flexible pavements were reviewed and analyzed to determine requirements for input data, sensitivity of designs based on the additional variables for percent reliability, standard deviation, and resilient modulus of subgrade material. Design thicknesses using the 1985 AASHTO Guide were compared to thicknesses using the 1981 Kentucky thickness design method for flexible pavements.

Chromate Adsorption On Amorphous Iron Oxyhydroxide In The Presence Of Major Groundwater Ions, John M. Zachara, Donald Girvln, Ronald Schmidt, C. Thomas Resch
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Chromate adsorption on amorphous iron oxyhydroxide was investigated in dilute iron suspensions as a single solute and in solutions of increasing complexity containing CO2 (g), SO42-(aq), H4Si04(aq), and cations [K+, Mg2+, Ca2+(aq)]. In paired-solute systems (e.g., CrO42- =H2CO3*), anionic cosolutes markedly reduce CrO42- adsorption through a combination of competitive and electrostatic effects, but cations exert no appreciable influence. Additionally, H4Si04 exhibits a strong time-dependent effect: CrO42- adsorption is greatly decreased with increasing H4SiO4 …
