Defeasible Decisions: What The Proposal Is And Isn't, R. P. Loui Jun 1989

Defeasible Decisions: What The Proposal Is And Isn't, R. P. Loui

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In two recent papers, I have proposed a description of decision analysis that differs from the Bayesian picture painted by Savage, Jeffrey and other classic authors. Response to this view have been either overly enthusiastic or unduly pessimistic. In this paper I try to place the idea in its proper place, which must be somewhere in between. Looking at decision analysis as defeasible reasoning produces a framework in which planning and decision theory can be integrated, but work on the details has barely begun. It also produces a framework in which the meta-decision regress can be stopped in a reasonable …

Development, Simulation, And Validation Of A Highly Nonlinear Hydraulic Servosystem Model, Tim W. Mclain, E K. Iversen, C C. Davis, S C. Jacobsen Jun 1989

Development, Simulation, And Validation Of A Highly Nonlinear Hydraulic Servosystem Model, Tim W. Mclain, E K. Iversen, C C. Davis, S C. Jacobsen

Faculty Publications

A highly accurate and predictive dynamic model of an electrohydraulic actuation system has been developed and verified. The accuracy of the model can be attributed to the inclusion of nonlinear representations of many system elements including hysteresis and saturation effects, orifice areas, piston damping, and flow forces. This level of accuracy makes the model a potentially valuable tool in the analysis and design of electrohydraulic actuation systems.

Back Propagation With Integer Arithmetic, Takayuki Dan Kimura Jun 1989

Back Propagation With Integer Arithmetic, Takayuki Dan Kimura

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The present work investigates the significance of arithmetic precision in neural network simulation. Noting that a biological brain consists of a large number of cells of low precision, we try to answer the question: With a fixed size of memory and CPU cycles available for simulation, does a larger sized net with less precision perform better than smaller sized one with higher precision? We evaluate the merits and demerits of using low precision integer arithmetic in simulating backpropagation networks. Two identical backpropagation simulators, ibp and fbp, were constructed on Mac II, ibp with 16 bits integer representations of network parameters …

Performance Of Solar-Assisted Modified-Open-Front Swine Nurseries, G. R. Bodman, M. F. Kocher, J. A. Deshazer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Performance data of two modified-open-front non-mechanically ventilated swine nurseries have shown that solar energy can be effectively utilized to maintain a productive environment within the animal space during cold weather (temperatures as low as -26°C ( - 15 °F). The nurseries feature a monoslope roof design and passive collector panels that also function as warm weather ventilation panels. An active solar-heating system uses a ground-level collector operated in conjunction with an in-floor solar heat distribution and storage system. The nurseries were designed to handle pigs weighing from 7 to 23 kg (15 to 50 lb). An average of 19% of …

Theory Of A Synchronously Pumped Mode-Locked Dye Laser In The Short Pump Pulse Limit, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson Jun 1989

Theory Of A Synchronously Pumped Mode-Locked Dye Laser In The Short Pump Pulse Limit, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the operation of a synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser when the pump pulse is taken as a Dirac delta function, a limit that is sometimes experimentally reasonable. We find that in this limit the model simplifies considerably and that with further assumptions the physical interpretation of synchronously pumped mode-locked operation becomes apparent. Specifically, our nonlinear dynamical model reduces to the same set of equations that govern a prepumped Q-switched laser, and from this simple picture we are able to derive approximate analytic formulas for the synchronously pumped mode-locked laser pulse width and peak intensity. Additionally, we present a …

Radio-Frequency Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth Of Diamond, Duane E. Meyer, Rodney O. Dillon, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 13.56 MHz has been used to produce diamond particles in two different inductively coupled systems with a mixture of methane and hydrogen. The effect of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) overcoating on silicon, niobium, and stainless-steel substrates has been investigated and in the case of silicon has been found to enhance particle formation as compared to uncoated polished silicon. In addition the use of carbon monoxide in hydrogen has been found to produce well-defined individual faceted particles as well as polycrystalline films on quartz and DLC coated silicon substrates. Plasma CVD is a competitive approach …

Direct Current-Excited Cw Co² Metal Waveguide Laser, Fahad S. Al-Mashaabi, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A novel design for a dc-excited cw CO₂ metal waveguide laser has been developed in which a slotted hollow cathode also doubles as a metal waveguide for the cavity modes. This design has been implemented in a compact structure that produces over 1 W of cw 10.6-µm radiation. The discharge characteristics, laser gain, and laser output have been studied as functions of various discharge parameters. The advantages of the transverse discharge of the slotted hollow cathode geometry include low voltage, positive impedance, rugged structure, and high optical gain. Overall efficiency is comparable with that of conventional longitudinal CO² lasers. The …

Convergence Properties Of The Waveform Relaxation Method As Applied To Electric Power Systems, Marija D. Ilić, J. K. White, Mariesa Crow May 1989

Convergence Properties Of The Waveform Relaxation Method As Applied To Electric Power Systems, Marija D. Ilić, J. K. White, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Several theoretical results are presented and simple examples examined in order to determine the suitability of waveform relaxation for transient power system simulation. This examination leads to two practical suggestions that can easily be satisfied for power systems. The first is to break the simulation interval into sections, the first of which should be narrow and be used to kill off errors in the initial guess that activate the stiff modes. The second is to partition the system into subsystems that are stable, as this not only aids convergence but ensures multirate numerical stability.

Optical-Absorption Edge And Disorder Effects In Hydrogenated Amorphous Diamondlike Carbon Films, T. Datta, John A. Woollam, W. Notohamiprodjo

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Optical absorption (~1–5 eV) in rf-deposited hydrogenated (20–40 at. %) amorphous “diamondlike” carbon films has been studied as a function of heat treatment. For E >~ 2.5 eV a Tauc behavior is exhibited. Optical band gaps Eg are E0, the width of the tail, is quantitatively explained in terms of the annealing temperature TH. Increasing TH (<700 >K) reduces the hydrogen content, lowers Eg, and appears to harden the films. Eg is determined to be a linear function of E0. Additional analysis was performed in terms of a divergence …
