Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Real-Fluid Mutual Diffusion Coefficients With The Lennard-Jones Potential Model, Richard L. Rowley, J. M. Stoker
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Real-Fluid Mutual Diffusion Coefficients With The Lennard-Jones Potential Model, Richard L. Rowley, J. M. Stoker
Faculty Publications
Mutual diffusion coefficients for selected alkanes in carbon tetrachloride were calculated using molecular dynamics and Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials. Use of effective spherical LJ parameters is desirable when possible for two reasons: (i) computer time is saved due to the simplicity of the model and (ii) the number of parameters in the model is kept to a minimum. Results of this study indicate that mutual diffusivity is particularly sensitive to the molecular size cross parameter, σ12, and that the commonly used Lorentz–Berthelot rules are inadequate for mixtures in which the component structures differ significantly. Good agreement between simulated and experimental mutual …

Expandable Membrane Ground Anchors In Talus, United States Department Of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration
Expandable Membrane Ground Anchors In Talus, United States Department Of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration
Dams
Expander Body (EB) tieback anchors were installed in talus material in Glenwood Canyon and evaluated as to their ease of installation and performance. The EB consists of a steel tube with thin, folded walls which is expanded in the soil by injection of cement grout. The EB system can be expanded in coarse, angular materials at high pressure without rupturing. It, therefore, can be successfully used to limit grout take in permeable materials.
Based on the results of this study, the EB system was approved as a permanent anchoring method in construction of I 70 through Glenwood Canyon.
Aluminum Deposition On Polyimides: The Effect Of In Situ Ion Bombardment, M. J. Vasile, Bonnie Bachman
Aluminum Deposition On Polyimides: The Effect Of In Situ Ion Bombardment, M. J. Vasile, Bonnie Bachman
Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The chemistry of the Al polyimide interface is examined by x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy sputter profiling. Al deposited on polyimide films without an in situ Ar backsputter shows a clearly defined 50‐Å Al2O3 layer just prior to the polyimide. This layer is identified by the O/Al atom ratio at 1.5, and the binding energy of the Al 2p transition. There is a clear separation of the Al/Al2O3/polyimide layers in the sputter profiles. Deposition of Al on polyimide surfaces after Argon backsputtering produces a diffuse Al/polyimide interface with no Al2O3 present. There …

A Simplified Equation For Modeling Sediment Transport Capacity, S. C. Finkner, M. A. Nearing, G. R. Foster, John E. Gilley
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Sediment transport capacity for shallow overland flow was represented as a quadratic function of downslope distance using the assumption of a linear increase in overland flow discharge with downslope distance and an approximation to the Yalin equation for sediment transport capacity. The simplified equation for sediment transport applies to complex topography having uniform soil and management characteristics. The simplified equation accurately approximated the Yalin equation when calibrated using the average of the hydraulic shear stresses at the end of a constant slope reference profile and the end of the actual profile. The simplified equation is useful in deriving closed-form solutions …

On The Orders Of Magnitude Of Epigenic Dynamics And Monoclonal Antibody Production, Joanne M. Savinell (Belovich), Gyun Min Lee, Bernhard O. Palsson
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The hybridoma cell's maximum capacity for monoclonal antibody (MAb) production is estimated to be 2300–8000 MAb molecules/cell/s, using measured rates of transcription and translation, and the limitations imposed by the size of the polymerase molecule and the ribosome. Nearly all the production rates reported in the literature fall into or below this range of production rates. Data from batch cultures of hybridomas demonstrate a constant specific rate of MAb production until the time integral of the viable cell concentration reaches about 108 cells · h/cm3. At this point, some essential nutrients from the standard media …

Analysis Of Edge Drains On Western Kentucky Parkway Milepost 83 To Milepost 90, David L. Allen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
On August 14. 1989. the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet requested the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to investigate an apparent drainage problem on the Western Kentucky Parkway. The area of concern was a rehabilitation project starting at Milepost 83 and ending at Milepost 90. The old PCC pavement was being broken and seated and was being overlayed with approximately five inches of asphaltic concrete. Longitudinal edge drains (Hydraway brand) were installed in 1988, but the PCC pavement was not broken until July, 1989. Two inches of asphaltic concrete base were placed over the old broken pavement, and were used as a driving …

Axon: A High Speed Communication Architecture For Distributed Applications, James P.G. Sterbenz, Gurudatta M. Parulkar
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
There are two complementary trends in the computer and communication fields. Increasing processor power and memory availability allow more demanding applications, such as scientific visualization and imaging. Advances in network performance and functionality have the potential for supporting programs requiring high bandwidth and predictable performance. However, the bottleneck in increasingly in the host-network interface, and thus the ability to deliver high performance communication capability to applications has not kept up with the advances in computer and network speed. We have proposed a new architecture that meets these challenges called Axon, whose novel aspects include: an integrated design of hardware, operating …

All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This paper describes the application-oriented lightweight transport protocol for object transfer (ALTP-OT) in the Axon host communication architecture for distributed applications. The Axon Project is investigating an integrated design of host architecture, operating systems, and communication protocols to allow the utilization of the high band-width provided by the next generation of communication networks. ALTP-OT provides the end-to-end transport of segment and message objects for interprocess communication across a very high speed internetwork, supporting demanding applications such as scientific visualization and imaging. ALTP-OT uses rate-based flow control specifically oriented to the transfer of objects directly between application memory spaces. This document …
Ampliative Inference, Computation, And Dialectic, R. P. Loui
Ampliative Inference, Computation, And Dialectic, R. P. Loui
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
There are three theses here: • Non-computationally conceived inference merely expands notation. This includes induction as well as deduction, and thus both deserve the adjective non-ampliative. Deriving entailments merely expands shorthand. All of the familiar formalisms for reasoning do just this. • There now exist examples of formalism for reasoning that do something else. They are deliberative, and to say in what way they are deliberative requires reference to the process through which they compute their entailments. • The original ampliative/non-ampliative terminology best survives as referring to this new distinction. Viewed formally, all other attempted distinctions either presume deduction to …

A Mathematical Treatment Of Defeasible Reasoning And Its Implementation, Guillermo R. Simari, R. P. Loui
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
We present a mathematical approach to defeasible reasoning. This approach is based on the notion of specificity introduced by Poole and the theory of warrant presented by Pollock. We combine the ideas of the two. This main contribution of this paper is a precise well-defined system which exhibits correct behavior when applied to the benchmark examples in the literature. We prove that an order relation can be introduced among equivalence classes under the equi-specificity relation. We also prove a theorem that ensures the termination of the process of finding the justified facts. Two more lemmas define a reduced search space …

Irrigation Soybeans By Growth Stages In Nebraska, N. L. Klocke, Dean E. Eisenhauer, James E. Specht, Roger Wesley Elmore, Gary W. Hergert
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Irrigated soybean production in Nebraska spans a region with diverse soils and climates. Irrigators can easily adopt irrigation scheduling using a stage of growth for timing applications. However, simplifying assumptions, including soil water holding capacity, rainfall, stored soil water, and adequate irrigation system capacity, are implicit in the development of stage of growth irrigation scheduling recommendations. Reliance on these can lead to misapplication of irrigation water.
This project tested irrigation scheduling techniques for indeterminate soybean production in Nebraska, with stage of growth indicating the initiation of irrigation. The range of soils and climate in the study area gave a range …

The use of pesticides is an integral part of today's agriculture. In many cases, pesticides safeguard crops from severe pest infestation, or increase yield by suppressing competing weed growth. Pesticides often make the difference between profits and losses in farming operations. However, pesticides, even in extremely low concentrations, can pose a risk to human health and to the environment. Applied to plant or soil surfaces, or injected into the soil, pesticides may leach to the ground water or may be washed off with surface water. Pesticide contaminated surface water can reach ground water, or contaminated ground water can reach the …
Efficient Interconnection Schemes For Vlsi And Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg
Efficient Interconnection Schemes For Vlsi And Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This thesis is primarily concerned with two problems of interconnecting components in VLSI technologies. In the first case, the goal is to construct efficient interconnection networks for general-purpose parallel computers. The second problem is a more specialized problem in the design of VLSI chips, namely multilayer channel routing. In addition, a final part of this thesis provides lower bounds on the area required for VLSI implementations of finite-state machines. This thesis shows that networks based on Leiserson's fat-tree architecture are nearly as good as any network built in a comparable amount of physical space. It shows that these "universal" networks …

Aerodynamic Forces On Flight Crew Helmets, Timothy A. Sestak, Richard M. Howard, Chester A. Heard
Publications
Wind tunnel tests were conducted to deter- mine the aerodynamic forces generated on aircrew flight helmets. Three helmets were tested: two used by aircrews flying ejection seat aircraft in the U.S. military, the Navy HGU-33/P and the Air Force HGU-53/P; and one prototype helmet of significantly different shape and volume. Axial and normal forces were measured through a range of pitch and yaw angles. It was found that large forces exist tending to promote helmet loss during ejection, and that simple modifications to the current helmet configurations can reduce those forces by as much as 40%. It is demonstrated that …

Thin films of CdS were grown onto (111) silicon substrates (wafers 2 in in diameter) by employing a horizontal, low-pressure MOCVD system. The observed growth of heteroepitaxial films occurred in the temperature range of 275-325 ±5 °C. The growth of polycrystalline samples with a high degree of preferred orientation occurred at temperatures above 325 ± 5 °C. The later films exhibited irregularly shaped surface pits about 1 μm in depth. These pits were observed by sectioning the substrates and examining them with an SEM; no significant crystallinity was apparent. X-ray analysis of an heteroepitaxial and a polycrystalline film via a …

On Implicational Dependency Families Possessing Finite Armstrong Relations, Kazem Taghva
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
Let X ≠ 0 be a finite collection of nonempty relations over the relation scheme R(A1, A2 , ... , A,.); then the closure of X under embedding and direct product (up to isomorphism) is a finitely generated Implicational Dependency family (ID-family) generated by X. In this paper, we show that the class of finitely generated ID-families is identical to the class of those ID-families which possess a finite Armstrong relation.

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels The Effect Of Strain Rate On Compressive Mechanical Properties Of Sheet Steels, Maher Kassar, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION Since May 1988, the research project on automotive components sponsored by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) at University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) has been concentrated on a study of the effect of strain rate on mechanical properties of sheet steels and the structural behavior and strength of cold-formed steel members subject to impact loads. The results of the tensile dynamic mechanical properties of three selected sheet steels, in the virgin condition as well as for the steels subjected to different amount of cold stretchings, were estabiished in 1988 and early 1989. Details of the tension coupon tests were presented …

Today's headlines trumpet urgent energy concerns. Still, there are ways in which individual effort cumulatively can slow, stop, and even reverse the negative impact of poor conservation habits.
Landscaping spends energy in a variety of ways: in the manufacture and use of fertilizers; in the manufacture, use, and fueling of landscaping equipment; in the production and distribution of our water supply; and in physical effort. But Xeriscaping saves energy.
With 800 - 900 people a day moving to the land of sunshine, water is increasingly precious. In Florida outdoor irrigation alone can consume up to 50 percent of the average …

Analytical Determination Of The Complex Dielectric Function Of An Absorbing Medium From Two Angles Of Incidence Of Minimum Parallel Reflectance, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function (or complex refractive index) of an opaque substrate or a thick film can be determined from two pseudo-Brewster angles measured in two transparent incidence media of different refractive indices. This two-angle method is simple in that it involves no photometric or polarimetric analysis and in that the solution for the optical properties in terms of the measured angles is explicit, analytical, and direct (i.e. noniterative). The two-angle method is demonstrated for an opaque TiN film on a Cleartran ZnS substrate as a specific example. The effect of angle-of-incidence errors on …
