Soil Conservation Earthworks Design Manual, K J. Bligh Nov 1989

Soil Conservation Earthworks Design Manual, K J. Bligh

All other publications

In view of the great diversity of hydrological conditions encountered in the field, and the relative paucity of information with which to design soil conservation earthworks, it is frequently not possible to quantify all aspects of hydrologic design. It remains for the practising soil conservationist to search for a reasonable solution to a problem which is most appropriate to the situation, location, information and skills. The equations in this Manual provide the best available estimates of flow rates and volumes for carrying out design but it must be recognised that the information has come from a relatively limited data set, …

Forty-seven Rainwater Basin wetlands of south-central Nebraska were evaluated to provide information on vegetation composition, species assemblages determined from direct and indirect ordination methodology, and community characteristics derived from wetlands mapping. Vegetation/soil relationships were evaluated from both vegetational stand and mapping data. Seasonal and year to year vegetation dynamics were evaluated for one study site, Harvard Marsh.

Ordination of vegetational data was accomplished by use of weighted averaging and detrended correspondence analysis. Weighted average ordination results indicated wetland status for the Fillmore, Scott and Massie soil series. Occurrence of upland vegetation on hydric soils and wetland vegetation on non-hydric soils …

Triggering In Trigatron Spark Gaps: A Fundamental Study, P. F. Williams, F. E. Peterkin Nov 1989

Triggering In Trigatron Spark Gaps: A Fundamental Study, P. F. Williams, F. E. Peterkin

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

The trigatron has been in widespread use as a demand-triggered, high-voltage switch for more than 40 years. In spite of the popularity and maturity of the technology, there persists an uncertainty over the basic physical mechanism(s) responsible for triggering breakdown in the devices. We present the results of an empirical study of trigatrons that demonstrates that breakdown is initiated by a streamer launched from the trigger pin, independent of the trigger spark. We compare our results with those of previous workers, and discuss the generality of our conclusions.

Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca Nov 1989

Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The authors present the optimal transient stability control problem in a hierarchical structure for multimachine power systems. The two-level structure retains the local closed-loop controls, thereby easing its implementation on existing systems. The formulation accounts for nonlinearities and interconnections, and the optimization of the system transient performance is obtained with less computational effort. Since the computations are distributed among the many local feedback subsystems, the storage and solution times are considerably less than those required by a single overall centralized controller. This advantage becomes much stronger as the system size increases. For illustration purposes, this technique was applied successfully to …

Tracer Gas As A Practical Field Diagnostic Tool For Assessing Duct System Leaks, Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings Oct 1989

Tracer Gas As A Practical Field Diagnostic Tool For Assessing Duct System Leaks, Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings

FSEC Energy Research Center®

A methodology is presented for using tracer gas testing to detect and quantify duct leakage in homes. Since air is invisible, leakage of air from duct systems often remains undetected. Smoke sticks used in conjunction with blower doors are excellent diagnostic tools for detecting and locating leaks in the air distribution system. The tracer gas tests described are a good complement to these tools in the detection, location, and measurement of duct leakage.

Testing for house infiltration once with the air handler on and again with the air handler off indicates whether duct leaks exist. In many cases, it is …

Bodner-Partom Viscoplastic Constitutive Model And The Non Linear Finite Element Analysis Of A Stress Concentration At High Temperature, Faysal A. Kolkailah, A. J. Mcphate

Aerospace Engineering

The design and analysis of structural components to operate at elevated temperature and severe stress levels, such as a low-cycle fatigue-limited jet engine disk, require an accurate prediction of the nonlinear stress-strain . response encountered during the cyclic loading conditions. Nonlinear analysis of such components is normally carried out by a finite element code making use of constitutive theories in which the material response is separated into the two important groups of phenomena known as rate dependent "creep" and rate independent "plasticity." A number of viscoplastic. constitutive theories in which "creep" and ''plasticity" effects are combined _into a unified plastic …

Accurate Calibration Of The Four-Detector Photopolarimeter With Imperfect Polarizing Optical Elements, R. M.A. Azzam, Ali G. Lopez Oct 1989

Accurate Calibration Of The Four-Detector Photopolarimeter With Imperfect Polarizing Optical Elements, R. M.A. Azzam, Ali G. Lopez

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The first three columns of the instrument matrix A of the four-detector photopolarimeter (FDP) are determined by Fourier analysis of the output current vector I(P) as a function of the azimuth angle P of the incident linearly polarized light. Therefore 12 of the 16 elements of A are measured free of the imperfections of the (absent) quarter-wave retarder (QWR). The effect of angular beam deviation by the polarizer is compensated for by taking the average, (1/2) [I(P) + I(P + 180°)], of the FDP output at 180°-apart, optically equivalent, angular positions of the polarizer. The remaining fourth column of A …

Pesticide Movement And Water Management, Majid Ehteshami, Richard C. Peralta Oct 1989
