Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Of Heaving Wave Energy Converter With Nonlinear Froude–Krylov Forces, Tania Demonte Gonzalez, Enrico Anderlini, Houssein Yassin, Gordon Parker

Michigan Tech Publications

Wave energy holds significant promise as a renewable energy source due to the consistent and predictable nature of ocean waves. However, optimizing wave energy devices is essential for achieving competitive viability in the energy market. This paper presents the application of a nonlinear model predictive controller (MPC) to enhance the energy extraction of a heaving point absorber. The wave energy converter (WEC) model accounts for the nonlinear dynamics and static Froude–Krylov forces, which are essential in accurately representing the system’s behavior. The nonlinear MPC is tested under irregular wave conditions within the power production region, where constraints on displacement and …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To investigate the three-dimensional spatial distribution of subducted oceanic slab segments and their consequential effect on the thermal and hydrous composition of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the entire Tibetan Plateau, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of approximately 655,000 P-to-s receiver functions (RFs), obtained from 735 broadband seismic stations. These RFs were utilized to delineate the 410 km (d410) and 660 km (d660) seismic discontinuities, which represent the upper and lower boundaries of the MTZ, respectively. The RFs were grouped within circular bins with a radius of 1 degree and stacked to image the discontinuities. The mean apparent depths …

Comparison Of Outlier Detection Approaches For Compressive Strength Of Cement-Based Mortars, Nara Cangussu, Paula Milheiro-Oliveira, Ana Mafalda Matos, Farhad Aslani, Lino Maia

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

EN 196-1 states that the compressive strength result of testing of standard mortar specimens corresponds to the average of the six individual measurements. If one of the six individual measurements varies more than ±10 % from the average, it must be excluded, and a new average is calculated with the five remaining values. This methodology might be interesting for quality control or characterization of cement; however, it may not be the best approach for research or scientific purposes. Applying EN 196-1 to non-standard cement-based mortars with multiple and even unconventional supplementary cementitious materials may induce even more variation in the …

Cross-Track Seabed Imaging And Buried Object Detection With A Multibeam Sonar, Charles W. Holland, Samuel Pinson, Daniel L. Orange, Cody R. Henderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

What lies underneath the ocean floor is of interest to a wide variety of disciplines. The focus here is imaging the upper tens of meters of material beneath the seafloor. The sub-bottom profiler is a valuable tool to that end, producing a 2-D image in depth below the seafloor and along the track of the ship. Geoscientists and engineers are frequently interested in not only the subseabed beneath the ship but also either side or cross-track of the ship. We show an approach to cross-track imaging using a low-frequency multibeam sub-bottom profiler. The main result is the detection of a …

A Deep Autoencoder For Electric Double Layer Capacitance Prediction In Electrochemical Sensors, Mason Mcgarrity, Feng Zhao Oct 2024

A Deep Autoencoder For Electric Double Layer Capacitance Prediction In Electrochemical Sensors, Mason Mcgarrity, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study explores the application of a deep autoencoder neural network to accurately predict the electric double layer capacitance from real-world parameters in binary, asymmetric electrolytes under low concentration conditions. By utilizing a modest simulation-based dataset of just 250 samples, the deep autoencoder neural network model developed in this study effectively predicted the capacitance by learning the critical features and relationships of the electric double layer model and encoding this learned representation into a low-dimensional latent space. From the latent variables, the decoder block of the neural network learned to effectively recreate the high-dimensional input. To enhance the model's robustness, …

Lifetimes Of Stable Solutions To The Planar Three-Body Problem, Revealed In Patterns Of Fractal Art, Charles F. Babbs Oct 2024

Lifetimes Of Stable Solutions To The Planar Three-Body Problem, Revealed In Patterns Of Fractal Art, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

This preliminary study explores statistical prediction of the lifetimes of apparently stable orbits of three particle masses, mutually attracted by gravity in the planar three body problem. Most orbits eventually break up, commonly in an end state with two of the bodies orbiting each other and moving together in one direction, with the third body moving in the opposite direction. Studies of such escape events led to a novel hypothesis, emerging from the intersection of probability, statistics, chaos, and fractal art. Statistical estimates of a constant probability of breakup per unit time allow prediction of the times of breakup of …

A Concept Of Controlling Grover Diffusion Operator: A New Approach To Solve Arbitrary Boolean-Based Problems, Ali Al-Bayaty, Marek A. Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A controlled-diffusion operator for Boolean oracles is designed as a new approach for Grover’s algorithm to search for solutions for arbitrary logical structures of such oracles, since the Grover diffusion operator is not able to find correct solutions for some logical structures of Boolean oracles. We also show that the Phase oracles do not work sometimes correctly using the Grover diffusion operator. Our proposed controlled-diffusion operator relies on the states of output qubit, as the reflection of Boolean decisions from a Boolean oracle without relying on the phase kickback. We prove that on many examples of Boolean and Phase oracles …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Superconducting resonator couplers will likely become an essential component in modular semiconductor quantum dot (QD) spin qubit processors, as they help alleviate crosstalk and wiring issues as the number of qubits increases. Here, we focus on a three-qubit system composed of two modules: a two-electron triple QD resonator coupled to a single-electron double QD. Using a combination of analytical techniques and numerical results, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes the three-qubit logical subspace and show that it accurately captures the dynamics of the system. We examine the performance of short-range and long-range entangling gates, revealing the effect of a …

On The Turbulent Viscosity Parameter Cμ In The K–Ε Model, Harshit Mishra, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy Oct 2024

On The Turbulent Viscosity Parameter Cμ In The K–Ε Model, Harshit Mishra, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models depend on empirical constants to close the Reynolds stress terms. The empirical constants were obtained using experiments conducted at low Reynolds numbers several decades ago. In this paper, we revisit the turbulent viscosity parameter Cμ, based on the stress–intensity ratio c2 = |uw|/k. Here, |uw| and k are the absolute values of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy, respectively. Through a priori comparisons, we find that the currently accepted value of Cμ = 0.09 does not agree with the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental datasets of wall-bounded turbulent planar flows. Therefore, …

Advances In Electrospun Poly(Ε-Caprolactone)-Based Nanofibrous Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Karla N. Robles, Fatima Tuz Zahra, Richard Mu, Todd Giorgio

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Tissue engineering has great potential for the restoration of damaged tissue due to injury or disease. During tissue development, scaffolds provide structural support for cell growth. To grow healthy tissue, the principal components of such scaffolds must be biocompatible and nontoxic. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is a biopolymer that has been used as a key component of composite scaffolds for tissue engineering applications due to its mechanical strength and biodegradability. However, PCL alone can have low cell adherence and wettability. Blends of biomaterials can be incorporated to achieve synergistic scaffold properties for tissue engineering. Electrospun PCL-based scaffolds consist of single or blended-composition …

Faculty Scholarship

We report a single-step optical clearing method that is compatible with RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) imaging. We previously demonstrated microscopy imaging with immunohistochemistry and genetic reporters using a technique called lipid-preserving refractive index matching for prolonged imaging depth (LIMPID). Our protocol reliably produces high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) images with minimal aberrations using high magnification objectives, captures large field-of-view images of whole-mount tissues, and supports co-labeling with antibody and FISH probes. We also custom-designed FISH probes for quail embryos, demonstrating the ease of fabricating probes for use with less common animal models. Furthermore, we show high-quality 3D images using a …

In the present paper, a new bioinspired, blade shape is proposed to enhance the power output of VAWT. This shape is based on modifying NACA 0018 …

Study Of Am Electrodeposition From Amcl₃-Licl-Kci Molten Salt, Rohan Akolkar, Christine E. Duval Oct 2024

Study Of Am Electrodeposition From Amcl₃-Licl-Kci Molten Salt, Rohan Akolkar, Christine E. Duval

Faculty Scholarship

In this work, the electrodeposition reaction of Am in AmCl₃LiCl-KCl molten salt was studied using voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Electrodeposition of Am was shown to proceed via a two − step reaction scheme, involving the one-electron transfer reduction of Am³⁺ to Am²⁺, followed by the two-electron transfer reduction of intermediate Am²⁺ to Am⁰. A low Coulombic efficiency of Am deposition was measured despite the Am deposition occurring within the thermodynamic stability window of the supporting LiCl-KCl electrolyte. We hypothesize that the low efficiency is due to out-diffusion of the intermediate Am²⁺ species away from the electrode surface. Experimental observations provide evidence …

M3t-Lm: A Multi-Modal Multi-Task Learning Model For Jointly Predicting Patient Length Of Stay And Mortality, Junde Chen, Qing Li, Feng Liu, Yuxin Wen

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Ensuring accurate predictions of inpatient length of stay (LoS) and mortality rates is essential for enhancing hospital service efficiency, particularly in light of the constraints posed by limited healthcare resources. Integrative analysis of heterogeneous clinic record data from different sources can hold great promise for improving the prognosis and diagnosis level of LoS and mortality. Currently, most existing studies solely focus on single data modality or tend to single-task learning, i.e., training LoS and mortality tasks separately. This limits the utilization of available multi-modal data and prevents the sharing of feature representations that could capture correlations between different tasks, ultimately …
