Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ionization treatment of indoor air has attracted attention for its potential to inactivate airborne pathogens and reduce disease transmission, yet its real-world effectiveness remains unverified. We evaluated the impact of an in-duct, bipolar ionization system on airborne particles, including culturable bacteria, in a lecture hall. The ionizer was off with variable fan speed for 1 week, on with variable fan speed for a second week, and on with high and constant fan speed for a third week. We measured ion concentrations and aerosol particle concentrations, and we collected bioaerosol samples for analysis of 16S rRNA gene copies representing total bacteria …

Sunrise Propulsion Subsystem Leak Rate Measurement Methodology, Alex Kirkman, Brittany Woytko, Holly Walen, Bret Maughan

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

As part of the integration and testing for Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE), it was necessary to characterize the propellent leak rate of the fully assembled propulsion subsystem for each satellite to ensure compliance with performance requirements. SunRISE utilized a cold gas system for its propulsion subsystem, using R-236fa propellant inside a tank made from a monolithic 3D printed SLA material. It was not possible to accurately characterize the propellent leak rate via weight by measuring the mass loss from the tank. This is due to the SLA material having both a high absorbance rate of water in normal …

Origami And Kirigami-Inspired Sandwich Panels For Uam Primary Structural Applications, Kalyan Raj Kota, Juhyeong Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Foldcore sandwich panels (FSPs) provide highly tailorable structural and multifunctional performance over legacy sandwich panels made with honeycomb or foam cores. In FSP manufacturing, skins and foldcore are made from any flat sheets of unitary or hybrid materials, folded into a desired pattern. Two common folding mechanisms include origami and kirigami: origami core is involved with folding only, while kirigami core is associated with a strategic combination of folding and cutting. Material and core geometry can be determined to satisfy the applications’ performance requirements. Overall, origami- or kirigami-inspired FSPs have the potential to revolutionize the ways to design and …

Multiscale Analysis Of Thermal Barrier Coated Cfrp Composites Under Thermal Loading, Devin Nielsen, Trenton M. Ricks, Juhyeong Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

Carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are commonly used in high performance applications. Although offering several advantages (i.e., superior specific properties and improved structural rigidity), traditional CFRP composites often exhibit poor thermal stability due to a low matrix thermal decomposition temperature. The effective operating temperature of the CFRP composites can be raised by applying an outermost, protective thermal barrier coating (TBC) layer. Prefabricated high void content ceramic TBCs are ideal for composite applications due to their high thermal stability and relatively low thermal conductivity. In this paper, the thermo-mechanical response of the TBCCFRP composite laminate subjected to 500°C are assessed through …

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning For Smart Community Energy Management, Patrick Wilk, Ning Wang, Jie Li Oct 2024

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning For Smart Community Energy Management, Patrick Wilk, Ning Wang, Jie Li

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

This paper investigates a Local Strategy-Driven Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (LSD-MADDPG) method for demand-side energy management systems (EMS) in smart communities. LSD-MADDPG modifies the conventional MADDPG framework by limiting data sharing during centralized training to only discretized strategic information. During execution, it relies solely on local information, eliminating post-training data exchange. This approach addresses critical challenges commonly faced by EMS solutions serving dynamic, increasing-scale communities, such as communication delays, single-point failures, scalability, and nonstationary environments. By leveraging and sharing only strategic information among agents, LSD-MADDPG optimizes decision-making while enhancing training efficiency and safeguarding data privacy—a critical concern in the …

Tunable Blended Collagen I/Ii And Collagen I/Iii Hydrogels As Tissue Mimics, Paulina M. Babiak, Carly M. Battistoni, Leonard Cahya, Rithika Athreya, Jason Minnich Ii, Alyssa Panitch, Julie C. Liu

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Collagen (Col) is commonly used as a natural biomaterial for biomedical applications. Although Col I is the most prevalent col type employed, many collagen types work together in vivo to confer function and biological activity. Thus, blending collagen types can better recapitulate many native environments. This work investigates how hydrogel properties can be tuned through blending collagen types (col I/II and col I/III) and by varying polymerization temperatures. Col I/II results in poorly developed fibril networks, which softened the gels, especially at lower polymerization temperatures. Conversely, col I/III hydrogels exhibit well-connected fibril networks with localized areas of fine fibrils and …

Contactless microscale tweezers are highly effective tools for manipulating, patterning, and assembling bioparticles. However, current tweezers are limited in their ability to comprehensively manipulate bioparticles, providing only partial control over the six fundamental motions (three translational and three rotational motions). This study presents a joint subarray acoustic tweezers platform that leverages acoustic radiation force and viscous torque to control the six fundamental motions of single bioparticles. This breakthrough is significant as our manipulation mechanism allows for controlling the three translational and three rotational motions of single cells, as well as enabling complex manipulation that combines controlled translational and rotational motions. …

Interpreting Black-Box Time Series Classifiers Using Parameterised Event Primitives, Ephrem Tibebe Mekonnen, Luca Longo, Pierpaolo Dondio Oct 2024

Interpreting Black-Box Time Series Classifiers Using Parameterised Event Primitives, Ephrem Tibebe Mekonnen, Luca Longo, Pierpaolo Dondio

Conference papers

Amidst the remarkable performance of deep learning models in time series classification, there is a pressing demand for methods that unveil their prediction rationale. Existing feature importance techniques often neglect the temporal nature of time series data, focusing solely on segment importance. Addressing this gap, this paper introduces a local model-agnostic method akin to LIME, which generates neighbouring samples by randomly perturbing segments of the original instance. Subsequently, weights are computed for each neighbouring instance based on its distance from the original, elucidating its influence. Parameterised event primitives (PEPs) are then extracted from these perturbed samples, encompassing increasing and decreasing …

Influence Of Redox Engineering On The Trade-Off Relationship Between Thermopower And Electrical Conductivity In Lanthanum Titanium Based Transition Metal Oxides, Mohammad El Loubani, Gene Yang, Seyed Morteza Taghavi Kouzehkanan, Tae-Sik Oh, Santosh Kiran Balijepalli, Dongkyu Lee

Faculty Publications

Discovery of new materials plays a critical role in developing advanced high-temperature thermoelectric (TE) applications. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are one of the attractive candidates for high-temperature TE applications due to their thermal and chemical stability. However, the trade-off relationship between thermopower (S) and electrical conductivity (σ) limits the maximum attainable power factor (PF), thereby hindering improvements in TE conversion efficiency. To overcome this trade-off relationship, the emerging approach of the redox-driven metal exsolution in TMOs shows promise in improving both S and σ. However, the effect of metal exsolution with different particle sizes and …

Transition Of Buoyancy-Driven Flow From An Axisymmetric To Non-Axisymmetric Vortex Inside An Evaporating Sessile Droplet, Jialing Yu, Zhenhai Pan, Justin A. Weibel

CTRC Research Publications

The internal flow within an evaporating sessile droplet has intriguing fluid mechanics important to various microfluidics applications. In the present study, a phenomenon is observed through numerical methods wherein the buoyancy-driven flow structure inside a droplet on a non-wetting substrate transitions from an axisymmetric toroidal vortex flow to a non-axisymmetric single vortex flow with increase in the substrate temperature. As the axisymmetric nature of the droplet flow field and evaporation characteristics are broken, the internal velocity accelerates significantly. The transition, which is attributed to a flow instability inside the droplet, is more prone to occur as the droplet volume or …

Data-Driven Sparse Sensor Placement Optimization On Wings For Flight-By-Feel: Bioinspired Approach And Application, Alex C. Hollenbeck, Atticus J. Beachy, Ramana V. Grandhi, Alexander M. Pankonien

Faculty Publications

Flight-by-feel (FBF) is an approach to flight control that uses dispersed sensors on the wings of aircraft to detect flight state. While biological FBF systems, such as the wings of insects, often contain hundreds of strain and flow sensors, artificial systems are highly constrained by size, weight, and power (SWaP) considerations, especially for small aircraft. An optimization approach is needed to determine how many sensors are required and where they should be placed on the wing. Airflow fields can be highly nonlinear, and many local minima exist for sensor placement, meaning conventional optimization techniques are unreliable for this application. The …
