Improving Thermionic Power Generation Via The Reduction Of Emission Barriers, Chace E. Franey
Improving Thermionic Power Generation Via The Reduction Of Emission Barriers, Chace E. Franey
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis investigates methods to improve the performance of thermionic energy converters (TECs) by reducing the emission barriers. A TEC generates electricity from thermal energy when electrons are emitted from a hot electrode (the emitter) through a vacuum gap and absorbed by a cooler electrode (the collector). Due to their lack of working fluids and inherently compact nature, TECs have garnered attention over the years for their potential as a means of power generation in space or high-grade waste heat recovery. Historically, however, the practical implementation of TECs has been hindered by significant technical challenges. Recent advancements in microfabrication techniques …
Electrochemical Treatment Of Mining And Oilfield Wastewater Using Recycled Titanium Alloy Electrodes, Sean Michael Thompsen
Electrochemical Treatment Of Mining And Oilfield Wastewater Using Recycled Titanium Alloy Electrodes, Sean Michael Thompsen
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis explores the integration of circular economy principles into wastewater treatment through the innovative use of recycled Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy electrodes. By repurposing titanium alloys from metal additive manufacturing (AM) waste, the research aims to address the treatment of acidic and oil-contaminated industrial wastewater in a sustainable manner. The recycled electrodes demonstrate notable stability and fouling resistance in challenging acidic conditions, attributed to their unique surface porosity and conductive properties. Electrochemical processes, including hydrogen evolution at the cathode, facilitate metal ion precipitation and destabilize surfactant-stabilized oil droplets. Cyclic voltammetry and long-term stability tests highlight the electrodes’ resilience, providing an …

Critical thinking is one of the most desired skills in the workplace, as it assists an individual in solving complex problems and making informed decisions, resulting in their workplace success. Argumentation is one instructional approach that provides students an opportunity to engage in higher-order thinking and improve their communication skills. Argumentative writing provides opportunities to engage in multiple perspectives of a problem, provide evidence for the claim, evaluate evidence, engage in reasoning, and acknowledge self-bias, which automatically engages students in critical thinking. Previous literature has shown that despite the use of interventions and scaffolding approaches, students' argumentative texts lack elements …
Dynamics Of Flexible Freestanding Structures Under Ground Motion Excitation, Seyed Mohammadreza Farooghi Mehr
Dynamics Of Flexible Freestanding Structures Under Ground Motion Excitation, Seyed Mohammadreza Farooghi Mehr
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Freestanding structures are characterized by being unattached at the base, exhibiting rigid or flexible motion under ground motion excitation with various potential responses including rocking (rotation at the base about corner points), pure sliding, slide-rocking, and overturning. While rigid freestanding structures have been extensively studied, the behavior of flexible freestanding structures—particularly the interaction between modes involving sliding—remains underexplored. Existing literature has focused on the deformation and rocking motions of flexible freestanding structures through both analytical and experimental approaches, which have shown indications of sliding at the base. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating sliding motion into analytical models to …

The widespread adoption of fifth-generation mobile networks has spurred the rapid advancement of mobile edge computing (MEC). By decentralizing computing and storage resources to the network edge, MEC significantly enhances real-time data access services and enables efficient processing of large-scale dynamic data on resource-limited devices. However, MEC faces considerable security challenges, particularly in cross-domain service environments, where every device poses a potential security threat. To address this issue, this paper proposes a secure cross-domain authentication scheme based on a threshold signature tailored to MEC’s multi-subdomain nature. The proposed scheme employs a (t,n) threshold mechanism to bolster system resilience and security, …

The oil and gas industry relies on accurately predicting profitable clusters in subsurface formations for geophysical reservoir analysis. It is challenging to predict payable clusters in complicated geological settings like the Lower Indus Basin, Pakistan. In complex, high-dimensional heterogeneous geological settings, traditional statistical methods seldom provide correct results. Therefore, this paper introduces a robust unsupervised AI strategy designed to identify and classify profitable zones using self-organizing maps (SOM) and K-means clustering techniques. Results of SOM and K-means clustering provided the reservoir potentials of six depositional facies types (MBSD, DCSD, MBSMD, SSiCL, SMDFM, MBSh) based on cluster distributions. The depositional facies …

Stress-Dependent Mohr–Coulomb Shear Strength Parameters For Intact Rock, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Rock strength is imperative for the design and stability analysis of engineering structures. The Mohr–Coulomb (M-C) criterion holds significant prominence in geotechnical engineering. However, the M-C criterion fails to accurately capture the nonlinear strength response and neglects the critical state of rocks, potentially leading to inaccuracies in the design phase of deep engineering projects. This study introduces an innovative stress-dependent friction angle and cohesion (SFC) for the M-C criterion to capture the nonlinear strength responses of intact rocks, spanning from non-critical to critical states (brittle to ductile regions). A novel method for determining these stress-dependent parameters at each corresponding σ3 …

Stress-Dependent Instantaneous Cohesion And Friction Angle For The Mohr–Coulomb Criterion, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The strength criterion of rock is essential for stability control and safety design of geotechnical engineering constructions. Due to its widespread adoption, the Mohr–Coulomb (M-C) criterion is prominent among strength criteria. However, the M-C criterion is constrained by three significant limitations: it fails to capture the nonlinear strength response, overlooks the critical state, and disregards σ2. This study introduces a novel Stress-dependent Instantaneous Friction angle and Cohesion (SIFC) model for the M-C criterion to represent the convex strength envelope of intact rock, covering the spectrum from non-critical to critical states. In pursuit of this objective, an innovative approach for calculating …

An accurate model for predicting TiO2 photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rates is hereby presented. The model was constructed from a database of 971 entries extracted predominantly from the open literature. A key step that enabled high accuracy lies in the use of active photon flux (AcP, photons with energy equal to and greater than the bandgap energy of the photocatalyst) as the input feature describing the irradiation. The quantification of AcP, besides being a more direct feature describing the photocatalyst excitation, circumvents the use of lamp power ratings and light intensities as ambiguous inputs as they encompass varying degrees …

The central inverter topology presents some advantages such as simplicity, low cost and high conversion efficiency, being the first option for interfacing photovoltaic mini-generation, whose shading and panel orientation studies are evaluated in the project planning phase. When it uses only one power converter, its control structures must ensure synchronization with the grid, tracking the maximum power generation point, appropriate power quality indices, and control of the active and reactive power injected into the grid. This work develops and contributes to mathematical models, the principles of formation of control structures, the decoupling process of the control loops, the treatment of …

SiC-based n-channel and p-channel MOSFETs fabricated by Fraunhofer IISB SiC CMOS technology are characterized from room temperature up to 300◦C. The behaviors of these low voltage devices including the short-channel effect (SCE), p-type ohmic contact with high resistivity, and the low channel mobility due to the SiC/SiO2 interface are presented. A thorough analysis is performed to understand the cause of low channel mobility, with TCAD simulations specifically on p-channel MOSFET, providing an insight into the impact of channel length, interface traps, and contact resistivity on device performance. The analysis in this paper is important in the comprehension of the low-voltage …
