Not All Samples Are Created Equal: Task-Aware Informative Sampling And Adaptive Inference For Efficient Edge Ai, Rebati Gaire

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has resulted in an unprecedented influx of data generated at the edge by billions of sensors. Traditional approaches relying on cloud-based processing are increasingly inadequate due to constraints in bandwidth, latency, and privacy. Edge computing has emerged as a transformative paradigm, enabling real-time data processing and decision-making by decentralizing computation to the edge. While the integration of deep learning into edge environments—termed edge intelligence—promises autonomous and personalized operations, it is hindered by challenges such as limited computational resources, energy constraints, and data redundancies.

This thesis addresses these challenges by presenting three …

Type II innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) maintain homeostasis and barrier integrity in mucosal tissues. In both mice and humans, ILC2s poorly reconstitute after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Determining the mechanisms involved in their impaired reconstitution could improve transplant outcomes. By integrating single-cell chromatin and transcriptomic analyses of transplanted ILC2s, we identify a previously unreported population of converted ILC1-like cells in the mouse small intestine post-transplant. Exposure of ILC2s to proinflammatory cytokines resulted in a mixed ILC1-ILC2 phenotype but was able to convert only a small population of ILC2s to ILC1s, which were found post-transplant. Whereas ILC2s protected against …

Universal Shape Replication Via Self-Assembly With Signal-Passing Tiles, Andrew Alseth, Daniel Hader, Matthew J. Patitz

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we investigate shape-assembling power of a tile-based model of self-assembly called the Signal-Passing Tile Assembly Model (STAM). In this model, the glues that bind tiles together can be turned on and off by the binding actions of other glues via “signals”. Specifically, the problem we investigate is “shape replication” wherein, given a set of input assemblies of arbitrary shape, a system must construct an arbitrary number of assemblies with the same shapes and, with the exception of size-bounded junk assemblies that result from the process, no others. We provide the first fully universal shape replication result, namely …

Reference Dependence In Queue Design And Pricing Strategies, Jian Liu, Yongpin Zhou, Jian Chen, Peng Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This research investigates the effect of reference dependence on waiting times in service systems which formerly used a first-in-first-out (FIFO) service but have introduced a priority line with a fee. Our model combines reference-dependent gain-loss utility with standard customer utility, and we posit that customers are pleased with shorter-than-expected waiting times, whereas longer-than-expected times lead to dissatisfaction and an increased likelihood of balking. The study explores two scenarios: a captive customer system (CCS) and a noncaptive customer system (NCCS), with a focus on optimal pricing and segmentation strategies for revenue and social welfare maximization. The results reveal that, in a …

Practical And Lightweight Defense Against Website Fingerprinting, Colman Mcguan, Chansu Yu, Kyoungwon Suh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Website fingerprinting is a passive network traffic analysis technique that enables an adversary to identify the website visited by a user despite encryption and the use of privacy services such as Tor. Several website fingerprinting defenses built on top of Tor have been proposed to guarantee a user's privacy by concealing trace features that are important to classification. However, some of the best defenses incur a high bandwidth and/or latency overhead. To combat this, new defenses have sought to be both lightweight - i.e., introduce a small amount of bandwidth overhead - and zero-delay to real network traffic. This work …

Synthesis Of Binary-Input Multi-Valued Output Optical Cascades For Reversible And Quantum Technologies, Ishani Agarwal, Miroslav Saraivanov, Marek Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper extends the decomposition from the group theory based methods of Sasao and Saraivanov to design binary input multivalued output quantum cascades realized with optical NOT, SWAP, and Fredkin Gates. We present this method for 3, 5, and 7 valued outputs, but in general it can be used for odd prime valued outputs. The method can be extended to realize hybrid functions with different valued outputs. A class of local transformations is presented that can simplify the final cascade circuits. Using these simplifying transformations, we present an upper bound on the maximum number of gates in an arbitrary -variable …

Quantum Visual Feature Encoding Revisited, Xuan-Bac Nguyen, Hoang-Quan Nguyen, Hugh Churchill, Samee U. Khan, Khoa Luu

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although quantum machine learning has been introduced for a while, its applications in computer vision are still limited. This paper, therefore, revisits the quantum visual encoding strategies, the initial step in quantum machine learning. Investigating the root cause, we uncover that the existing quantum encoding design fails to ensure information preservation of the visual features after the encoding process, thus complicating the learning process of the quantum machine learning models. In particular, the problem, termed the “Quantum Information Gap” (QIG), leads to an information gap between classical and corresponding quantum features. We provide theoretical proof and practical examples with visualization …

Impacts Of Stream Bed Adjustment On Local Bridge Morphology At Highway 281, Molly G. Likins

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Nebraska sand-bed rivers have long been a part of sediment transport studies and have been used in the development of numerous well-known empirical bedload equations. Some of these studies have shown how adjustments in streambed elevation led to changes in local stream morphology. The sand-bed rivers of Nebraska are highly susceptible to such changes due to their wide, shallow cross-sections and erodibility. The objective of our study is to synthesize a hydrodynamic model with high-resolution field data and improved methods of representing sediment transport to better predict both short and long-term channel adjustments for an aggraded sand-bed river.

The field …
