Empirical Models Of 3d Air-To-Air Communication Channels, Neil Matson
Empirical Models Of 3d Air-To-Air Communication Channels, Neil Matson
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) often lack the size, weight, and power to support large antenna arrays or a large number of radio chains. Despite such limitations, emerging applications that require the use of swarms, where UAVs form a pattern and coordinate towards a common goal, must have the capability to transmit in any direction in three-dimensional (3D) space from moment to moment. In this work, we design a measurement study to evaluate the role of antenna polarization diversity on UAV systems communicating in arbitrary 3D space. To do so, we construct flight patterns where one transmitting UAV is hovering at …
One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett
One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Phase Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) radar an emerging technology for autonomous cars. It is more flexible than the current frequency modulated systems, offering better detection resolution, interference mitigation, and future development opportunities. The issue preventing PMCW adoption is the need for high sample-rate analog to digital converters (ADCs). Due to device limits, a large increase in cost and power consumption occurs for every added resolution bit for a given sampling rate. This thesis explores radar detection techniques for few-bit and 1-bit ADC measurements. 1-bit quantization typically results in poor amplitude estimation, which can limit detections if the target signals are …

Modeling And Analysis Of A 12kw Solar-Wind Hybrid Renewable Energy System, Ekaterina Muravleva
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The increase in rate of depletion of natural resources in the last decade as well as the increased global focus on climate change has made the transition to renewable resources of energy a priority for various countries and organizations across the globe. The sporadic nature of energy generated by photovoltaic systems and wind energy conversion systems has led to an increased utilization of more reliable hybrid renewable energy systems. A combination of both solar and wind energy-based power generations systems reduces the impact of seasonal variation on the amount of power generated and therefore, can be used under varying weather …

This paper reports high-temperature optocouplers for signal galvanic isolation. Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology was used in the design and fabrication of the high-temperature optocoupler package. The optimal coupling behaviors, driving capabilities and response speed of the optocouplers were concentrated and investigated in this paper. Emitters and detectors with different emission and spectral wavelengths were studied to achieve optimal coupling behaviors. Relatively high coupling efficiency is achieved with emitters and detectors of emission and spectral wavelength in the red spectrum (i.e., 620–750 nm), leading to higher current transfer ratios (CTR). To further enhance the electrical performance, optocouplers with multiple …

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
III-nitride material (GaN) shows a lot of potential for next-generation power electronics. This material is advantageous due to its wide bandgap, high electron mobility, high thermal and mechanical stability, small form factor, and higher radiation tolerance. The higher radiation tolerance makes the GaN-based devices more attractive for harsh-environment applications, like aerospace, nuclear reactor, and fusion facilities, particle accelerators, and post-detonation environments applications.
GaN due to its unique crystal structure can be grown in different orientations and can provide specific advantages in electronic and optoelectronic devices. While the Ga-polar orientation of GaN has been widely investigated for its proprieties, there are …
Distributed Interdigital Capacitor (Idc) Sensing For Cable Insulation Aging And Degradation Detection, Md Nazmul Al Imran
Distributed Interdigital Capacitor (Idc) Sensing For Cable Insulation Aging And Degradation Detection, Md Nazmul Al Imran
Theses and Dissertations
Nuclear power plants (NPPs) contain myriad power, control, instrumentation, and other types of cables. The polymer insulation and jacket materials of such cables degrade over time due to operation and environmental conditions e.g., heat, humidity, and radiation. Since the life span of NPPs may extend beyond 40-50 years regular monitoring of cable insulation and jacket polymers is critical to ensure safe and reliable operation. The agingrelated degradation of cables causes changes in the relative permittivity or dielectric constant of the insulation and jacket materials. Capacitor sensors, if properly designed and developed can measure this change and thus can provide an …

Nanoarchitectural control of matter is crucial for next-generation technologies. DNA origami templates are harnessed to accurately position single molecules; however, direct single molecule evidence is lacking regarding how well DNA origami can control the orientation of such molecules in three-dimensional space, as well as the factors affecting control. Here, we present two strategies for controlling the polar (θ) and in-plane azimuthal (ϕ) angular orientations of cyanine Cy5 single molecules tethered on rationally-designed DNA origami templates that are physically adsorbed (physisorbed) on glass substrates. By using dipolar imaging to evaluate Cy5′s orientation and super-resolution microscopy, the absolute …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Crowdsourcing is an effective means of accomplishing human intelligence tasks by leveraging the collective wisdom of crowds. Given reports of various accuracy degrees from workers, it is important to make wise use of these reports to derive accurate task results. Intuitively, a task result derived from a sufficient number of reports bears lower uncertainty, and higher uncertainty otherwise. Existing report aggregation research, however, has largely neglected the above uncertainty issue. In this regard, we propose a novel report aggregation framework that defines and incorporates a new confidence measure to quantify the uncertainty associated with tasks and workers, thereby enhancing result …

A Concept For Weighting Sentiment Phrase Using Deterministic Solution Of Algebraic Equations, Maryam Jalali, Morteza Zahedi, Abdolali Basiri
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Many text mining methods have used statistical information as text and language-independent procedures that are not deterministic. On the other hand, grammatical structure-based methods are limited to use in a certain language and text. We aim to suggest an algorithmic algebraic equation in a deterministic and nonprobabilistic way while maintaining the advantage of language independence. We propose a mathematical approach that transforms text and labels into a set of dumb equations. By solving the equations, each word is assigned a weight that can reflect the semantic information of that word, then we use the proposed algorithm to build a novel …
Degree-Based Random Walk Approach For Graph Embedding, Sarmad N. Mohammed, Semra Gündüç
Degree-Based Random Walk Approach For Graph Embedding, Sarmad N. Mohammed, Semra Gündüç
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Graph embedding, representing local and global neighbourhood information by numerical vectors, is a crucial part of the mathematical modeling of a wide range of real-world systems. Among the embedding algorithms, random walk-based algorithms have proven to be very successful. These algorithms collect information by creating numerous random walks with a predefined number of steps. Creating random walks is the most demanding part of the embedding process. The computation demand increases with the size of the network. Moreover, for real-world networks, considering all nodes on the same footing, the abundance of low-degree nodes creates an imbalanced data problem. In this work, …
Generating Ad Creatives Using Deep Learning For Search Advertising, Kevser Nur Çoğalmiş, Ahmet Bulut
Generating Ad Creatives Using Deep Learning For Search Advertising, Kevser Nur Çoğalmiş, Ahmet Bulut
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We generated advertisement creatives programmatically using deep neural networks. A landing page contains relevant text data, which can be used for generating advertisement creatives, i.e. ads. We treated the ad generation task as a text summarization problem and built a sequence to sequence model. In order to assess the validity of our approach, we conducted experiments on four datasets. Our empirical results showed that our model generated relevant ads on a template-based dataset with moderate hyperparameters. Training the model with more content increased the performance of the model, which we attributed to rigorous hyperparameter tune-up. The choice of word embedding …

Prediction Of Broken Rotor Bar In Induction Motor Using Spectral Entropy Features And Tlbo Optimized Svm, Sudip Halder, Sunil Bhat, Bimal Dora
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The information of the fault frequency characteristics is of great importance for all associated fault diag nostics. This requires a high-resolution spectrum analysis to achieve efficient monitoring of machinery faults, especially while diagnosing rotor bar breakage under light load conditions, because the fault frequencies almost overlap with the fundamental. In this context, rather than looking for frequencies associated with rotor faults, several frequency bands are observed separately in terms of the entropy contained within these bands. First, the motor current signal has been divided into several frequency bands using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT), and the spectral entropy is calculated …

Networked Digital Predictive Control For Modular Dc-Dc Converters, Castulo Aaron De La O Pérez
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of power electronics building blocks (PEBB) has driven advancements in highly modularized converter systems with many identical subsystems. PEBBs are distributed subsets of converter systems and thus require communication with a control system for their coordination. For this type of system, the communication latency with hard deterministic deadlines is the driving attribute of communication system requirements. However, inherent communication requirements for PEBB-based converter systems also provide opportunities for coordination of energy flow.
Leveraging developments in Gigabit serial communication channels, a control and communication platform architecture for distributed control schemes based on the 2D-Torus communication network topology was developed …

Non-Intrusive Microwave Surface Wave Technique For Cable Damage And Aging Detection, Ahmed Shah Arman
Non-Intrusive Microwave Surface Wave Technique For Cable Damage And Aging Detection, Ahmed Shah Arman
Theses and Dissertations
Power plants, power distribution and transmission networks, automobiles, aircrafts, trains, industrial manufacturing plants etc. use a variety of cables and wires. The insulation and jacket polymer materials of cables can degrade over time due to operational stressors and environmental conditions. Materials may age, corrode, get chaffed and go missing which if remain undetected and unaddressed can result in major failures. Insulation degradation or damage detection from a distance normally involves the application of direct contact reflectometry techniques. This requires the cable to be disengaged and a diagnostic signal to be directly applied to a cable with a return path. While …

Navigation using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is common for autonomous vehicles (ground or air). Unfortunately, GNSS-based navigation solutions are often susceptible to jamming, interference, and a limited number of satellites. A proposed technique to aid in navigation when a GNSS-based system fails is magnetic navigation - navigation using the Earth's magnetic anomaly field. This solution comes with its own set of problems including the need for quality magnetic maps in every area in which magnetic navigation will be used. Many of the currently available magnetic maps are generated from a combination of dated magnetic surveys, resulting in maps …

Supermodal Decomposition Of The Linear Swing Equation For Multilayer Networks, Kshitij Bhatta, Amirhossein Nazerian, Francesco Sorrentino, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
We study the swing equation in the case of a multilayer network in which generators and motors are modeled differently; namely, the model for each generator is given by second order dynamics and the model for each motor is given by first order dynamics. We also remove the commonly used assumption of equal damping coefficients in the second order dynamics. Under these general conditions, we are able to obtain a decomposition of the linear swing equation into independent modes describing the propagation of small perturbations. In the process, we identify symmetries affecting the structure and dynamics of the multilayer network …

For such an application, two of the pivotal requirements are having a power dense and energy efficient propulsion system. To that end, in the design procedure of the electric motor and its drive system, high power density and efficiency over the entire operating range is the ultimate goal. Thus, the integration of the electric motor and drive system into a single unit has been introduced as an effective method to meet the design objectives. Therefore, this paper presents the design procedure of a module …

This paper proposes a novel inverse method based on the deep convolutional neural network (ConvNet) to extract snow's layer thickness and temperature via passive microwave remote sensing (PMRS). The proposed ConvNet is trained using simulated data obtained through conventional computational electromagnetic methods. Compared with the traditional inverse method, the trained ConvNet can predict the result with higher accuracy. Besides, the proposed method has a strong tolerance for noise. The proposed ConvNet composes three pairs of convolutional and activation layers with one additional fully connected layer to realize regression, i.e., the inversion of snow parameters. The feasibility of the proposed method …

A numerical scheme, which hybridizes the element-level dual-field time-domain finite-element domain decomposition method (ELDDM) and the time-domain boundary integral (TDBI) method to accurately and efficiently analyze open-region transient electromagnetic scattering problems, is proposed. Element-level decomposition decouples Maxwell equations on a discretization element from those on its neighboring elements using equivalent currents defined on their faces. For any element inside the computation domain, the equivalent currents are obtained from fields in the neighboring elements. For any element on the boundary of the computation domain, the equivalent currents are obtained using the fields generated by TDBI. To generate these fields, TDBI 'radiates' …

Purpose: Blood vessels called telangiectasia are visible in skin lesions with the aid of dermoscopy. Telangiectasia are a pivotal identifying feature of basal cell carcinoma. These vessels appear thready, serpiginous, and may also appear arborizing, that is, wide vessels branch into successively thinner vessels. Due to these intricacies, their detection is not an easy task, neither with manual annotation nor with computerized techniques. In this study, we automate the segmentation of telangiectasia in dermoscopic images with a deep learning U-Net approach. Methods: We apply a combination of image processing techniques and a deep learning-based U-Net approach to detect telangiectasia in …
