Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Nowadays short texts can be widely found in various social data in relation to the 5G-enabled Internet of Things (IoT). Short text classification is a challenging task due to its sparsity and the lack of context. Previous studies mainly tackle these problems by enhancing the semantic information or the statistical information individually. However, the improvement achieved by a single type of information is limited, while fusing various information may help to improve the classification accuracy more effectively. To fuse various information for short text classification, this article proposes a feature fusion method that integrates the statistical feature and the comprehensive …

All Dissertations
An original design and photolithographic fabrication process for poly(3-hexylthiophene-2, 5-diyl) (P3HT) based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) is presented. The structure of the transistors was based on the bottom gate bottom contact OTFT. The fabrication process was efficient, cost-effective, and relatively straightforward to implement. Current–voltage (I-V) measurements were performed to characterize the primary electronic properties of the transistors. The measured mobility of these transistors was significantly higher than most results reported in the literature for other similar bottom gate bottom contact P3HT OTFTs. The higher mobility is explained primarily by the effectiveness of the fabrication process in keeping the interfacial layers …

Permanently-Installed Distributed Pressure Sensors For Downhole Applications, Xuran Zhu
All Dissertations
Technology advancements (e.g., hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling) to recover unconventional oil and gas (UOG) resources are critical in maintaining future U.S. oil and gas production levels. Permanently installed distributed downhole pressure sensors could monitor fracture propagation, assess the effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing, and optimize hydraulic fracturing placement so that overall UOG recovery efficiency can be increased. However, the harsh environment (high temperatures, high pressures, strong vibration, and presence of brine, mud, debris, hydrate, and various gases), the long data telemetry distance, and the requirements of reliability and service lifetime make the downhole monitoring a very challenging task. To combat …

Feasibility Of Tracking Human Kinematics With Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (Slam), Sepehr Laal, Paul Vasilyev, Sean Pearson, Mateo Aboy, James Mcnames
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We evaluated a new wearable technology that fuses inertial sensors and cameras for tracking human kinematics. These devices use on-board simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms to localize the camera within the environment. Significance of this technology is in its potential to overcome many of the limitations of the other dominant technologies. Our results demonstrate this system often attains an estimated orientation error of less than 1o and a position error of less than 4 cm as compared to a robotic arm. This demonstrates that SLAM’s accuracy is adequate for many practical applications for tracking human kinematics.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Computerized obstacle detection for moving vehicles is becoming more important as vehicle manufacturers make their systems more autonomous and safe. However, obstacle detection must operate quickly in dynamic environments such as driving at highway speeds. A unique obstacle detection system using 3D changes in the environment is proposed. Furthermore, these 3D changes are shown to contain sufficient information for avoiding obstacles. To make the system easy to integrate onto a vehicle, additional processing is implemented to remove unnecessary dependencies. This system provides a method for obstacle detection that breaks away from typical systems to be more efficient.

Detection, Tracking, And Classification Of Aircraft And Birds From Multirotor Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Chester Valentine Dolph
Detection, Tracking, And Classification Of Aircraft And Birds From Multirotor Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Chester Valentine Dolph
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The ability for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) to safely operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) is of great interest to governments, businesses, and scientific research. One critical element for sUAS to operate BVLOS is the capability to avoid other air traffic. While many aircraft will be cooperative and broadcast their locations using Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), it is expected that many aircraft will remain non-cooperative – meaning they do not communicate position or flight plan to other aircraft. Avoiding mid-air collisions with non-cooperative aircraft is a critical limitation to widespread sUAS flying BVLOS. Examples of non-cooperative traffic …
