This article presents a novel peak detect and hold (PDH) circuit for the measurement of the peak voltage of electromagnetic-field probes. These probes are used to capture the fields generated by electrostatic discharge (ESD) events in nongrounded portable devices. Therefore, a circuit combining small size, low power consumption, and nanosecond operation is needed. A topology using a discrete bipolar transistor structure with operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) and common-base storage capacitor charge control optimally meets the requirements. The circuit performance is demonstrated for different bias point settings. The error between the captured value and the actual pulse peak value is shown …

Improved Quantification Of Defect Cross-Section For Active Microwave Thermography, Logan M. Wilcox, Kristen M. Donnell Jan 2023

Improved Quantification Of Defect Cross-Section For Active Microwave Thermography, Logan M. Wilcox, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Active microwave thermography (AMT) is an integrated nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) technique that features a microwave-based excitation and subsequent thermographic inspection via an infrared camera. AMT has been successfully employed in several industries including aerospace and civil for NDT&E inspections. Since the excitation is microwave-based, an antenna is used to irradiate the sample under test and hence the heating pattern will vary spatially (following the antenna pattern). This nonuniform thermal excitation may limit the ability of AMT to quantify defect cross-sections. Therefore, this work seeks to expand the capabilities of AMT by incorporating a post-processing technique to improve defect …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis delves into innovative active photonic integrated devices and circuits on the thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform, focusing on their applications and potential future advancements. We introduce a new family of electrooptic modulators (EOMs), the Four-Phase Electrooptic Modulators (FEOMs), which are fabricated using the TFLN platform. These devices effectively mitigate bandwidth and dynamic-range constraints in optical communication systems by reducing dispersion penalties and common-mode noises. Their functionality is demonstrated in a photonic time-stretch system. A dual-polarization variant further exemplifies the mitigation of both dispersion penalties and common-mode noises in long-haul communication links, marking significant strides towards the practical implementation …

Extended Cross-Referenced Analysis Using Data From The Landsat 8 And 9 Underfly Event, Garrison Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Landsat 8 and 9 Underfly Event occurred in November 2021, where Landsat 9 flew beneath Landsat 8 in the final stages before settling in its final orbiting path. An analysis was performed on the images taken during this event, which resulted in a cross-referenced with uncertainties estimated to be less than 0.5%. This level of precision was due in part to the near-identical sensors aboard each instrument as well as the underfly event itself, which allowed the sensors to take nearly the exact same image at nearly the exact same time. This initial calibration was applied before the end …

Analysis And Design Of Secure Sampled-Data Control Subject To Denial-Of-Service Attacks, Hira Sana, Ghulam Mustafa, Owais Khan, Nouman Ashraf, Abdul Qayyum Khan, Muhammad Abid, Haroom Ur Rashid Khan

Articles

This study addresses the issue of secure control design for cyber-physical systems (CPS) against denial of service (DoS) attacks. We take into account a continuous-time linear system with a convex quadratic performance measure and a sampled linear state feedback control. DoS attacks impose constraints on the CPS, where packets may be jammed between the sensor and controller by a malicious entity, potentially resulting in system instability and performance degradation. We assume that the attacker can perform DoS attacks with a limited time and frequency due to energy restrictions. We devise an efficient procedure using the linear matrix inequality approach to …

Graduate School of Business Publications

The involvement of hydrogen energy systems has been recognised as a promising way to mitigate climate problems. As a kind of efficient multi-energy complementary system, the hydropower-photovoltaic-hydrogen (HPH) system could be an ideal approach to combining hydrogen with an installed renewable energy system to improve the flexibility of energy management and reduce power curtailment. However, the intra-day scheduling of HPH system brings challenges due to the time-related nonlinear hydropower generation process, the complex energy conversion process and the uncertain natural resource supply. Faced with these challenges, an improved deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based data-driven scheduling algorithm is proposed. In contrast …

Swarm Electrification: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Stephen Sheridan, Keith Sunderland, Jane Courtney Jan 2023

Swarm Electrification: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Stephen Sheridan, Keith Sunderland, Jane Courtney

Articles

In the global North, the need to decarbonize power generation is well documented and the challenges faced are endemic to the design of the electrical grids. With networks relying on centralized generation, it can be difficult to replace fossil-fuel power plants with renewable energy sources as generation may be intermittent causing grid instability when there is no ‘spinning reserve’ [1]. In parts of the global south, however, many under-electrified nations have high levels of solar irradiance. This, combined with falling prices for solar panels, is allowing for alternative paths to electrification from costly grid extensions and has resulted in grids …

Although using a series compensation technique in a long transmission line effectively increases the transmittable power; it may cause a sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) phenomenon. Gate-controlled series capacitor (GCSC) is an effective method for SSR damping by controlling the turn-off angle. In the previous studies, a constant supplementary damping controller (SDC) was used for controlling the turn-off angle, which can mitigate the SSR phenomenon. However, these methods can not capture the maximum transmittable power at different operating points. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is proposed to compute the gain of SDC based on the wind speed and the …

The droop mechanism is widely utilized in a stand-alone microgrid (MG) to regulate power-sharing among distributed generators (DG). However, over the years, the droop phenomena are continually modified to lessen the deviation in voltage and frequency parameters caused due to classical droop. This study suggests computing the droop coefficient for voltage–current (V–I) droop to take into account for proportional power distribution among DGs. In grid utility networks, the conservation voltage reduction (CVR) strategy is widely used to curtail the use of energy. Hence, this paper investigates the CVR's performance for stand-alone MG by performing the adaptive vector control scheme in …
