A Method For Plotting Isohyetal Maps Using An Analog Computer, Maurice George Kirwan
A Method For Plotting Isohyetal Maps Using An Analog Computer, Maurice George Kirwan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ability of the analog computer to stimulate physical phenomena is used in conjunction with a resistance paper model of the Walnut Gulch watershed in Arizona to plot constant precipitation maps from data obtained from recorded rainfall. Voltages which are proportional to rainfall at a specific raingage, located at scaled points of the resistance paper model, set up an electric field on the resistive sheet which is detected and processed by the computer. The detected potential is compared to a reference potential, or "precipitation value", and the necessary analog networks allow plotting of the equipotential line which is directly analogous …
Ehv Ac Parallel Transmission Line Calculations With Application To The Near Resonance Problem, A. Norton Chaston
Ehv Ac Parallel Transmission Line Calculations With Application To The Near Resonance Problem, A. Norton Chaston
Faculty Publications
The use of shunt reactors with EHV transmission lines has introduced new problems, one of which is induction of high voltages on a de-energized circuit of two parallel lines. This paper presents the matrix equations used in developing a digital computer program which takes into account the effects of electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, distributed lines, and transposition. The computer program may also be used to calculate the effects of shunt reactors, series capacitors, and loads. The equations can be adapted to a wide range of applications, although the examples for this paper have been limited to the near resonance problem …
Reflection And Transmission Of Dipole Radiation In Presence Of An Extended Boundary, Rough And Smooth, Byong Ki Park
Reflection And Transmission Of Dipole Radiation In Presence Of An Extended Boundary, Rough And Smooth, Byong Ki Park
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Several different forms of integral solutions exist to the problem of dipole radiation in presence of a half space with plane boundary, all of which can be easily shown to agree with one another by transformation. For the evaluation of these integrals, a number of assumptions are usually made on some parameters in the expressions such as the medium property, the wavelength and so on. Unfortunately, however, even with these simplifying (but meaningful) assumptions, practically useful results for the dipole radiation problem are still lacking. Also it appears that there is no theory of dipole radiation when the plane boundary …

A Study Of Thin-Film Superconducting Junctions, William P. Korink
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The information presented in this paper is the result of research conducted toward the development. of a reproducible thin-film superconducting junction. The results of this experimentation and the equipment and procedures used are provided.
A qualitative explanation is given for the theory used in the derivation of the volt-ampere characteristics of thin-film superconducting junctions of metal-insulator- metal construction. This explanation entails the electron flow through the insulating layer through the use of the Fermi-Dirac and density of states functions.
The theoretical investigation is based on the BCS Theory and results in volt-ampere characteristics that agree very well with published experimental …

System Definition Of A Small, Economical General Purpose Computer, Thomas Elden Kreger
Masters Theses
"The major differences between commercially available electronic calculators and the small, general purpose computer are discussed. A computer system organization is proposed with low cost, physical compactness and user convenience as design objectives. In addition, a system block diagram and a set of micro-instructions are postulated. These micro-instructions are micro-programmed to provide floating point arithmetic capability and a library of function generating sub-routines"--Abstract, page ii.
Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes
Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes
Masters Theses
"Compared to the problem of combinational network (CN) diagnosis, that of sequential network (SN) diagnosis has been an extremely difficult one. Present techniques of SN diagnosis are difficult to apply, and generally lead to lengthy test schedules or additional logic. This paper presents a new approach to the SN diagnostic problem which results in a substantially simpler technique than those found in the literature. The approach is to modify the SN so that it can be diagnosed from a combinatoric point of view. This is accomplished by the addition of outputs for testing purposes to certain lines in the circuit--no …
Microwave Propagation Through Isotropic Inhomogeneous Photoconductive Media, Thomas Van Doren
Microwave Propagation Through Isotropic Inhomogeneous Photoconductive Media, Thomas Van Doren
Doctoral Dissertations
"The electromagnetic field equations for microwave propagation through a rectangular waveguide filled with a lossy, isotropic, linear, inhomogeneous material are derived in matrix form and solved numerically by computer. The theoretical effects of photo-induced conductivity and dielectric constant variations on microwave attenuation, phase shift, and voltage standing wave ratio are plotted for typical examples in the X-band frequency range. The theoretical calculations indicate that a two order-of-magnitude change in the conductivity can produce a 25 db change in the attenuation or a 100 degree change in the angle of the reflection coefficient. The theoretical predictions are verified qualitatively by experiments …
A Method For Determining Transient Stability In Power Systems, Charles A. Gross
A Method For Determining Transient Stability In Power Systems, Charles A. Gross
Doctoral Dissertations
"Given a three phase ac power system consisting of synchronous alternators interconnected by transmission lines and other items of electrical transmission equipment, a method is presented which determines the stability of the system when subjected to a three phase symmetrical fault, and to the subsequent clearing of the fault. It is inherent in the method that an estimation of system stability, assuming an instantaneous clearing of the fault, is available. The critical clearing time is therefore determined. The effect of a speed control loop on the system's largest machine is investigated. The method is applied to two, three, four, and …
Analysis Of The Traveling-Wave Transistor, Vernon Ray Stanley
Analysis Of The Traveling-Wave Transistor, Vernon Ray Stanley
Doctoral Dissertations
"Transmission lines containing independent and dependent distributed sources are considered and the transfer matrices of various active distributed lines are derived. A method is discussed by which a lossy line can be made lossless by the appropriate choice of distributed sources. A steady-state analysis of the uniform traveling wave transistor is given. Considering the device as an active four port network, the transfer matrix is found in closed form and the power gain, output voltage, and input impedance are found. A computer program is written and the frequency response is given for various values of line parameters and terminations. Finally, …

State Assignments For Non-Normal Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary Keith Maki
State Assignments For Non-Normal Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary Keith Maki
Masters Theses
"There is a lack of procedures that can be used to find good internal state assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits operating in the non-normal mode. Presented here, are two generalized state assignments, which are functions only of the number of rows in a flow table. The suggested bounds for the generalized state assignments are m + [log₂m] and m + [m/2] internal state variables for a 2m-row flow table, where [ ] means "next lowest integer". Both generalized state assignments produce group (linear) codes. The algorithms for generating these internal state assignments are easy and straight-forward to implement. …
Generation Of Design Equations In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey, Robert J. Smith
Generation Of Design Equations In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey, Robert J. Smith
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
One step in the synthesis procedure for realizing an asynchronous sequential switching circuit is the generation of next-state and output state equations from a simplified and coded flow table description of the circuit. The usual approach for determining these equations is to first construct a state table from the coded flow table, and then construct transition and output tables. For large flow tables this can be quite a lengthy procedure. This note describes an algorithm which simplifies the synthesis procedure for normal fundamental-mode circuits by permitting the determination of these equations without explicit construction of the state table, transition table, …

An Investigation Of Transient Negative Resistance In A Cadmium Sulfide Device, John Irvin Giem
An Investigation Of Transient Negative Resistance In A Cadmium Sulfide Device, John Irvin Giem
Masters Theses
"An analysis has been made of a CdS device which exhibits a transient negative resistance at room temperature and low field strengths whereas previously reported cases of negative resistance in CdS were observed at low temperatures and moderate to high electric fields. The CdS bar was illuminated on one end in the vicinity of an ohmic In contact. Contact was made to the other end of the device with a rectifying Ag contact and the device was reverse biased. Experimental evidence and the analytical results both indicated that it is necessary that the material used to make the negative resistance …

The Design Of Three-Port Strip Line Circulator, Jeng Seng Chang
Masters Theses
"This dissertation is concerned with the analysis and design of the radius of ferrite disk of strip line circulator using a generalized analytical field expression. The first part consists of an analysis of the field in the ferrite disk with the TEM wave incident normally on the air-ferrite boundary. It is approximated by taking the boundary condition at the incident and outlet points, so that analytical expressions for the electric and magnetic fields can be obtained. The next part consists of an approximate method to determine the radius of the ferrite disk based on the result obtained in the first …
An Analysis Of An Audio Amplifier Utilizing An Operational Amplifier And Negative Feedback, Anthony Francis Lexa
An Analysis Of An Audio Amplifier Utilizing An Operational Amplifier And Negative Feedback, Anthony Francis Lexa
Masters Theses
"An audio amplifier utilizing a monolithic operational amplifier is analyzed. The analysis is a block diagram approach where the amplifier is divided into three parts; operational amplifier, power amplifier, and feedback network. A Fourier series analysis is used to describe the distortion and signal components of the amplifier output. The results of this analysis demonstrate the advantage of large negative feedback on frequency response and harmonic distortion. Using relatively few passive components a high quality audio amplifier is constructed with an output power of 15 watts RMS power and negligible harmonic distortion"--Abstract, page ii.

Fast Neutron Effects On Transistor Scattering Parameters, David Leslie Gray
Fast Neutron Effects On Transistor Scattering Parameters, David Leslie Gray
Masters Theses
"It has not been possible in the past to characterize a transistor or other semiconductor device with regard to its performance in a fast neutron (E>10keV) environment when the device is operated at high (>100 MHz) frequencies. Using the scattering (s-) parameter concept, which regards a device as a two-port "black box", a full characterization of the trends in the neutron bombarded high-frequency performance of a typical transistor can be made. Scattering parameters are not only an accurate means of describing the high-frequency performance of any device, but are now reasonably easily measured with the advent on the …

Neutron Induced Changes To The Modified Ebers-Moll Transistor Model Used In The Net-1 Program, Kenneth Robert Smith
Masters Theses
"The development of theoretical and empirical relations which predict the permanent changes to the electrical characteristics of silicon transistors is described in this paper. Analytical techniques are also developed to obtain the parameters used in the Modified Ebers-Moll transistor model. The method employed is to determine the effects on externally measurable characteristics and to relate these changes to the parameters in the Modified Ebers-Moll transistor model. Further, all nonlinear characteristics are related to the independent variables with interpolating polynomials and degraded characteristics presented. then degraded characteristics are used to establish the parameters for and parameter changes to the transistor model …

Tunnel Diode Models For Electronic Circuit Analysis Program (Ecap), Carmon Dale Thiems
Masters Theses
"In this paper ECAP models for the tunnel diode are presented. Results showing the model, the current-voltage charateristics [sic] are discussed. Operation in typical circuits is presented. A summary of the current state of the art in modeling appears in Appendix I. Since ECAP is only structured to accept piecewise-linear models of these devices, that type of model is presented here. All of the models are developed to approximate the typical tunnel diode current-voltage characteristic"--Introduction, page 1.
A Synthesis Procedure Of Distributed Rc Parameter Networks, Chun-Ming Wen
A Synthesis Procedure Of Distributed Rc Parameter Networks, Chun-Ming Wen
Masters Theses
"Synthesis procedures for driving-point functions and transfer functions in the w plane are developed in this thesis. For driving-point functions and transfer functions which are single-valued in s, where s is the complex frequency variable, the synthesis procedures were derived from the extension of the O'Shea's trasformation [sic]. For the transfer functions which satisfy the stability theorem in the w plane, a synthesis procedure is developed by using a distributed-lag element (DL) or a uniform distributed RC (UDRC) network with matched terminations"--Abstract, page ii.
Design And Use Of A Universal Logic Circuit, Mahendrakumar Punjalal Shah
Design And Use Of A Universal Logic Circuit, Mahendrakumar Punjalal Shah
Masters Theses
"Yau and Tang have designed universal logic circuits (ULC's) of three variables with 8 I/O pins. They assumed that only one variable was available as a free input variable in its true and complementary form, the others were available as fixed input variables and the circuit generated true and complementary outputs. Their design required 22 I/O pins for a four-variable ULC, constructed from three variables ULCs. This paper decrived [sic] an algorithm for determining the input-pin connections, directly from the K-map of a given output function, for any n-variable ULC. Forslund and Waxman have designed a three-variable ULC using the …

The interaction of the telecommunications system design and the spacecraft mechanical, environmental, electrical, and operational interfaces are described in qualitative and quantitative terms. A practical spectrum of system interface characteristics …
Computer-Aided Design Of Lossless Non-Uniform Transmission Lines, Larry Lee Wesner
Computer-Aided Design Of Lossless Non-Uniform Transmission Lines, Larry Lee Wesner
Masters Theses
"A numerical iterative design technique is presented for the synthesis of lossless non-uniform transmission lines. A variational approach is used to minimize an error functional to which the system and boundary equality constraints have been adjoined by Lagrangian multipliers. The resultant network optimization conditions lead to an iterative scheme requiring analysis of the non-uniform line, analysis of an adjoint system and calculation of the error gradient in parameter space. A steepest descent procedure is used to optimize parameter values. Finite difference equations are used to provide an approximation model for implementation on the digital computer. A design example and a …

Basic Design Of Mosfet, Four-Phase, Digital Integrated Circuits, Earl Morris Worstell
Basic Design Of Mosfet, Four-Phase, Digital Integrated Circuits, Earl Morris Worstell
Masters Theses
"MOSFET is defined as metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor. The integrated circuit design relates strictly to logic and switching circuits rather than linear circuits. The design of MOS circuits is primarily one of charge and discharge of stray capacitance through MOSFETS used as switches and active loads. To better take advantage of the possibilities of MOS technology, four-phase (4[phi]) circuitry is developed. It offers higher speeds and lower power while permitting higher circuit density than does static or two-phase (2[phi]) logic. Equations are developed that apply directly to the design of four-phase logic along with examples of circuitry that show …
