Sensitivity Analysis In Active Rc Bandpass Circuits, Robert Bentzinger Jan 1972

Sensitivity Analysis In Active Rc Bandpass Circuits, Robert Bentzinger

Masters Theses

"This thesis is concerned with the analysis and cataloguing of sensitivity functions of some selected active RC bandpass networks. The sensitivity functions of primary interest are the sensitivities of the quantities ωo and Q with respect to changes in the element values of each circuit.

An introduction is provided to give background information on how each circuit is realized. Each circuit is then analyzed and the pertinent sensitivity functions catalogued. Some comments are made as to the approximations which are involved in several of the realizations and the validity of any sensitivity analysis made on these approximate realizations. The …

Minimum Distance Classification In Remote Sensing, A. G. Wacker, D. A. Landgrebe Jan 1972

Minimum Distance Classification In Remote Sensing, A. G. Wacker, D. A. Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

The utilization of minimum distance classification methods in remote sensing problems, such as crop species identification, is considered. Minimum distance classifiers belong to a family of classifiers referred to as sample classifiers. In such classifiers the items that are classified are groups of measurement vectors (e.g. all measurement vectors from an agricultural field), rather than individual vectors as in more conventional vector classifiers.

Specifically in minimum distance classification a sample (i.e. group of vectors) is classified into the class whose known or estimated distribution most closely resembles the estimated distribution of the sample to be classified. The measure of resemblance …

Secondary Techniques For Increasing Fault Coverage Of Fault Detection Test Sequences For Asynchronous Sequential Networks, Lewis Ronald Hoover Jan 1972

Secondary Techniques For Increasing Fault Coverage Of Fault Detection Test Sequences For Asynchronous Sequential Networks, Lewis Ronald Hoover

Doctoral Dissertations

"The generation of fault detection sequences for asynchronous sequential networks is considered here. Several techniques exist for the generation of fault detection sequences on combinational and clocked sequential networks. Although these techniques provide closed solutions for combinational and clocked networks, they meet with much less success when used as strategies on asynchronous networks. It is presently assumed that the general asynchronous problem defies closed solution. For this reason, a secondary procedure is presented here to facilitate increased fault coverage by a given fault detection test sequence. This procedure is successful on all types of logic networks but is, perhaps, most …

A Method For Generating Uts Assignments With An Iterative State Transition Algorithm, Dattatraya Govind Raj-Karne Jan 1972

A Method For Generating Uts Assignments With An Iterative State Transition Algorithm, Dattatraya Govind Raj-Karne

Doctoral Dissertations

"There is a lack of systematic procedures that can be used to find uni-code totally sequential (UTS) assignments from a flow table description of an asynchronous sequential circuit. Presented here is an iterative internal state assignment method. This method consists of three algorithms. The first generates a minimum variable initial assignment from a flow table description. The second tests the validity of this assignment by constructing minimum length transition paths without crossover and the third augments this assignment by adding an internal state variable in the event that all transition paths cannot be constructed without crossover. The second and the …

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language System, Gregory Martin Bednar Jan 1972

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language System, Gregory Martin Bednar

Doctoral Dissertations

"This paper presents a system for specifying the behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. The system consists of a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL), a translator and a flow table generation algorithm. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior. It is best suited for problems originating from a word description of the circuit's operation. The translator is written with the XPL Translator Writing System and is a syntax-directed compilation method. From the translated ACDL specifications, the flow table algorithm generates a primitive flow table which is the required input for the …

Distributed-Network Realizations For The Simulation Of Partial Differential Equations, Roy Dale Hensley Jan 1972

Distributed-Network Realizations For The Simulation Of Partial Differential Equations, Roy Dale Hensley

Doctoral Dissertations

"A method is developed for the simulation of the partial differential equation

-uxx + koutt + klut +k2u = g(t)

for various boundary conditions. The boundary conditions are used to classify the problems into types and the Laplace transformed solution of the most general problem of each type is obtained.

Synthesis techniques are presented for the realization of circuits containing distributed networks that can be used to simulate the partial differential equation for given boundary conditions. Several heat flow and vibrating string examples are included to illustrate the application of the …

The Effect And Compensation Of Time-Base Perturbations In Analog Recording Systems, Clifford D. Skouby Jan 1972

The Effect And Compensation Of Time-Base Perturbations In Analog Recording Systems, Clifford D. Skouby

Doctoral Dissertations

"The mean square error between recorded and reproduced signals is used as an error measure to determine the effects of time-base perturbations on an analog singal. The mean square error caused by time-base perturbations is shown to be proportional to the product of the square of the signal bandwidth and the time-base error variance for the case of low pass signal. When the signal is band pass, there is shown to be an additional error term which is proportional to the square of the signal center frequency and the time-base error variance.

Calculations are also carried out to determine the …

A Learning Receiver For Communication In Three-Component Multipath Channels, Richard Paul Brueggemann Jan 1972

A Learning Receiver For Communication In Three-Component Multipath Channels, Richard Paul Brueggemann

Doctoral Dissertations

"An adaptive receiver is designed for transmissions through a time-varying multipath channel which may include both specular and diffuse components. The design is based on the theory of unsupervised learning machines and the receiver is a recursive structure which does not grow in complexity with each new observation, but is Bayes' optimal at each instant of time. The multipath medium is modelled as an aggregate of L conditionally independent transmission paths, each consisting of random and/or fixed reflections, and is identified in terms of three components: (1) indirect diffuse scatter, (2) indirect specular reflection, and (3) direct transmission. The channel …

Iicads--Integrated Interactive Computer Aided Design System, Archie Golden Lambert

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research has three goals. The first goal is to develop a software interface (supervisor) to support and control a variety of interactive subsystem modules; thus eliminating manual scheduling of interactive jobs. The second goal is to develop a common methodology for interactive subsystem design. The third goal is to develop a linear systems analysis package using the facilities developed under the first two goals. A software interface (supervisor) to support and control a variety of interactive subsystem modules is described. The supervisor operates under the constraints of a large multiprogramming variable task operating system as opposed to a time …

Hydro-Thermal Generation Unit Commitment And Dispatch Using A Dynamic Programming Approach, Warren Dean Graham

Doctoral Dissertations

"The problem of thermal unit commitment is solved with dynamic programming. A practical example is given which solves the problem for a six generator system over a one year time span. This long range solution is used with a hydro optimization procedure to give an optimized hydro-thermal unit commitment solution. From this, a worth of hydro value is computed for each month, which may be used in the daily dispatching of thermal units and hydro. Applications of the program are also shown for aiding in generator maintenance scheduling and evaluating purchase power contracts with neighboring utilities. Error analysis is made …

Computer Solution To Inverse Problems Of Elliptic Form: V²U(X,Y) = G(A,U,X,Y), Frederick Alvin Jeter

Dissertations and Theses

One important aspect of our present age of monolithic high speed computers is the computer's capability to solve complex problems hitherto impossible to tackle due to their complexity. This paper explains how to use a. digital computer to solve a specific type of problem; specifically, to find the inverse solution of a in the elliptical equation V2U(x,y) = g(a,U,x,y), with appropriate boundary conditions. This equation is very useful in the electronics field. The knowns are the complete set of boundary values of U(x,y) and a set of observations taken on internal points of U(x,y). Given this information, plus …

Centering In Parallel Channel Systems, Allen Katz Jun 1971

Centering In Parallel Channel Systems, Allen Katz

Dissertations

Several types of signal processing systems in which the signal flows along parallel channels in a fashion similar to the auditory system have been investigated. The effect of excitation with signals containing both single and multiple spectral peaks (formants) was considered. In particular, the effect of nonlinear interaction between channels, referred to as centering, in the presence of noise was studied.

These systems were investigated for their value, both as information processing networks and as models of the auditory system.

The analysis indicates that parallel channel systems, in general, exhibit excellent performance in the presence of noise, and that a …

Sidelobe Suppression In Chirp Radar Systems, Stephen N. Honickman May 1971

Sidelobe Suppression In Chirp Radar Systems, Stephen N. Honickman

Dissertations

Pulse radars extend target range detection by increasing the transmitted pulse width. On the other hand, target resolution is enhanced by reducing the system pulse width. These dichotomous requirements led to the invention of chirp radar systems which achieve greater target resolution for a given detectable range by frequency modulating the carrier frequency of the transmitted pulse. Along with the advent of chirp radars came the extremely simple and reliable technique of chirp signal generation known as "passive generation". However, one of the undesirable features of "passive generation" lies in the infinite time required for transmission of the resultant pulse, …

Sequences From Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers., Richard H. Braasch May 1971

Sequences From Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers., Richard H. Braasch

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

1.1 General Aspects of Shift-Register Generated Sequences

An n-stage register is a device consisting of n consecutive two-state memory units controlled by a clock. At each clock pulse, the state ak (logical 1 or 0) of each memory stage, ak, is shifted to the adjacent stage of higher degree. A shift register may be converted into a code generator through introduction of feedback loops that compute a new shift register state based on the previous state of the register. This feedback shift register principle is illustrated in Figure 1-1.

Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Attenuation Of A Vertically Polarized Radio Wave, Arlo D. Mickelsen May 1971

Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Attenuation Of A Vertically Polarized Radio Wave, Arlo D. Mickelsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis is to determine feasibility and to investigate some of the problems encountered in making soil moisture measurements using radio wave propagation. The procedure consists of propagating a vertically polarized wave over the earth and measuring the field strength attenuation. A brief summary of present methods of measuring soil moisture is given.

Certain aspects of radio wave propagation theory are discussed, covering such topics as the surface wave, the space wave, the skin depth, and the effect of the dielectric constant on radio wave propagation. Based on this theory, measurement parameters such as frequency, antenna separation, …

A Statistical Theory Of Avalanche Breakdown In Silicon, Terence Vincent Sewards Apr 1971

A Statistical Theory Of Avalanche Breakdown In Silicon, Terence Vincent Sewards

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A statistical theory of avalanche breakdown in silicon is presented, based on the conventional Boltzmann transport equation. The scattering mechanisms considered are impact ionization (electron-hole pair production), phonon emission and absorption, thermal generation and recombination. The resultant critical field is found to depend on the recombination statistics, which were ignored in previous theories of avalanche breakdown. The theoretical temperature dependence is compared with the temperature dependence of the breakdown voltages of three conunercial diodes.

The Development And Use Of Scattering Parameters For Semiconductor Junction Devices, Lee Dennis Philipp Mar 1971

The Development And Use Of Scattering Parameters For Semiconductor Junction Devices, Lee Dennis Philipp

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Scattering parameters are developed for diodes and transistors. The parameters are developed through a modification of the wave equation from quantum mechanics. The effects of pulsed X-ray radiation on these devices is then calculated with the use of these parameters.

Various methods of analyzing semiconductor junction devices are discussed. These methods include diffusion theory, invariant imbedding and quantum mechanics. The background in these areas necessary for a discussion of semiconductor models is outlined.

Models resulting from the three basic approaches are presented. These include the Ebers-Moll Model, the Charge Control Model, the Linville Model, the Gore Model, the MLB (McKelvey, …

Deriving Dc Machine Torque By The Principle Of Virtual Work, George Mcpherson Jan 1971

Deriving Dc Machine Torque By The Principle Of Virtual Work, George Mcpherson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of this paper is to fill a gap which exists in the "textbook" theory of dc machines. The paper shows that the usual expression for dc machine torque can be obtained from the direct application of the principle of virtual work to the machine, making the traditional assumptions. The method provides additional benefits in that it demonstrates the reluctance torque which results from the saliency of the field structure and shows that compensating windings have no effect on the torque under the assumed linear conditions. A Gamma-Level Portable Ring-Core Magnetometer, Stanley V. Marshall Jan 1971

A Gamma-Level Portable Ring-Core Magnetometer, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A four-transistor circuit is described for a battery-operated magnetometer that has 0.1 γ resolution using t-in diameter 4–79 or 6–81 Mo-Permalloy tape cores of 20–40 Mx capacity. The center-tapped drive winding also serves as the sense winding, simplifying the sensor assembly. Some signal-to-noise results are presented to illustrate the fairly wide difference that may exist between cores of the same cross section and to demonstrate the advantage of reducing core area. The Anodic Dissolution Of Tungsten, James W. Johnson, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Jan 1971

The Anodic Dissolution Of Tungsten, James W. Johnson, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of tungsten was studied in H2SO4-K2SO4 solutions (pH = -2 to 2.5) and K2SO4-K2CO3-KOH solutions (pH = 11.5 to 14.5) at 25 C. Faradaic efficiency studies in basic solutions showed the metal to be oxidized to the +6 state. In acid solutions, a thick protective film of yellow WO3 was formed. Polarization curves possessed linear Tafel regions (slope ~ 2.3 RT/F) at potentials slightly more positive than the rest potentials. An anodic dissolution mechanism is proposed which involves a surface film …

Screening Electrocardiograms Using Hotelling's Method Of Principle Components, Edward G. Schwartz Jan 1971

Screening Electrocardiograms Using Hotelling's Method Of Principle Components, Edward G. Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Considerable use is presently being made of computers to classify electrocardiograms (ECGs) into various heart defect categories. An example of such a program is the "Electrocardiographic Analysis Program" developed jointly by the Mayo Clinic and IBM. In one of Dr. Caceres published reports, he tells of using a computer program which involves 5,000 instructions. Dr. Caceres does not say whether this is a commercial program or one of bis own. His description does place this program in the same general category as IBM's. These programs have the common criteria of examining the ECG for the same information that a cardiologist …

Maximum-Distance Linear Codes, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey Jan 1971

Maximum-Distance Linear Codes, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Described here is a linear code that has a maximum distance between codewords of k for a code of order 2k. Since the minimum-maximum distance is k for a code of order 2k, a class of minimum-maximum distance codes results. For an (n,k) linear code, k ≤ n ≤ k + k∣2 for k even and k ≤ n ≤ k + (k - 1)/2 for k odd. Maximum-distance codes are found useful in encoding the states of sequential circuits. © 1971, IEEE. Magnetic Properties Of Ceramic Ferrites Developed For Use In Fractional Horse Power A.C. Motors, Ram Saran Bhatia Jan 1971

Magnetic Properties Of Ceramic Ferrites Developed For Use In Fractional Horse Power A.C. Motors, Ram Saran Bhatia

Masters Theses

"The ceramic material produced in the Ceramic Engineering Department of the University of Missouri-Rolla has been tested to determine its magnetic properties. First the B-H characteristic, Q-factor and initial permeability were measured at different frequencies and the relative-loss factor was determined from the above results. The samples prepared were in the shape of toroids of approximately 8.0 cm of mean length and were wound with standard insulated number 38 wire. The soft ferrite material was produced to determine whether or not it could be used in the design of fractional H.P. a.c. motors"--Abstract, page ii.
