Design Of An Analog-Temperature Control System For An Expansion Cloud Chamber, Andrew C. Tebelak Jan 1973

Design Of An Analog-Temperature Control System For An Expansion Cloud Chamber, Andrew C. Tebelak

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the design, construction, and application of an analog control system for the temperature control of an expansion cloud chamber. During the expansion, the sample gas and the chamber walls are cooled at the same rate so as to maintain adiabaticity. The control system measures the wall temperature with transistor temperature sensors, calculates the gas temperature from the gas pressure using the adiabatic gas law, and generates a control signal proportional to their difference. The control precision is sufficient to allow the chamber to be used in the study of atmospheric phenomena.

The chamber is a ten-sided right …

Nutation Control During Precession Of A Spin-Stabilized Spacecraft, Richard James Donner Jan 1973

Nutation Control During Precession Of A Spin-Stabilized Spacecraft, Richard James Donner

Masters Theses

"The effects of precession thrust pulses and energy dissipation upon nutation of a spin-stabilized spacecraft are studied. Methods for controlling nutation during a precession maneuver are proposed and examined. In particular, a precession modulation control law is developed which uses precession thrust pulses to control nutation. Digital simulations show that precession control with separate nutation control is the fastest precessing system; however, the precession modulation method is only fractionally slower while not requiring a separate nutation control system"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Rf Induction Heating And Float Zone Refining Of Silicon, John Allen Reynolds Jan 1973

A Study Of Rf Induction Heating And Float Zone Refining Of Silicon, John Allen Reynolds

Masters Theses

"Float zone refining using simultaneous RF induction heating and electromagnetic levitation has proven to be the best technique for producing high purity silicon for the semiconductor industry.

A study of the power requirements for floating molten zones, of load to source impedance matching, and of considerations for RF heating coil design was conducted to determine possible methods of improving the technique. It is shown that the power requirements are within reason, that impedance matching can be improved by varying network parameters, and that certain vital items must be assured in the design of different RF heating coils.

It is believed …

Ideal Filter Approximation And Synthesis, Patrick Shu Yau Ho Jan 1973

Ideal Filter Approximation And Synthesis, Patrick Shu Yau Ho

Masters Theses

"Several methods are currently used for approximating the ideal low pass filter. Generally, those approximations relate only to the amplitude or phase characteristic of the ideal filter. A class of filters has been proposed as approximating both the amplitude and phase characteristics of the ideal filter. The characteristics of the first ten members of the proposed class are considered in this paper. The results indicate a much improved approximation to the ideal filter has been achieved"--Abstract, page ii.

The Static Nonequilibrium Characteristics Of Planar Germanium Probes In A Slightly Ionized Hydrogen Plasma For Low Injections, Alfred Gene Williams Jan 1973

The Static Nonequilibrium Characteristics Of Planar Germanium Probes In A Slightly Ionized Hydrogen Plasma For Low Injections, Alfred Gene Williams

Masters Theses

"The theory for a planar semiconductor probe in a slightly ionized gas with small dc current densities is developed for a germanium probe immersed in a hydrogen plasma. First, the equilibrium characteristics due to the probe in the plasma are developed from Poisson's equation and current density equations. Then, the static nonequilibrium characteristics due to the probe are found by perturbing the equilibrium characteristics and substituting the perturbation terms into Poisson's equation and current density equations. The total current, I, is found to vary linearly with the applied voltages, V, and the ratios I/V are essentially the same for both …

This system has been analyzed by classical Z-transform analysis and control models have been developed for two kinds of controls. First, …

Optimal Synthesis Of Active Distributed Rc Low-Pass Filters, Robert Iman Egbert Jan 1973

Optimal Synthesis Of Active Distributed Rc Low-Pass Filters, Robert Iman Egbert

Masters Theses

"Although synthesis procedures for active distributed RC networks are well developed, the approximation problem is largely unsolved. Previously proposed solutions have several disadvantages. A better solution to the approximation problem is obtained by developing an error expression involving the difference between the ideal specification and the exact realization, then minimizing this error by numerical techniques. The method is illustrated by designing a set of active distributed RC low-pass filters"--Abstract, page ii.

Power, Divergence, And Stability Factors Affecting The Use Of A Krypton Laser As A Multispectral Illumination Source, David Perry Owsley

Masters Theses

"Specific performance characteristics of a krypton laser were measured. Evaluation criteria were dictated by the proposed use of the laser as a multi-wavelength illumination source. The laser output power, spectral power distribution, and output stability were measured as a function of wavelength and transverse mode order, to determine optimal operation characteristics. Data are presented defining the compromise between laser output power and beam divergence when the laser is operated multi-wavelength, and in several low-order transverse modes. There is an advantage of increased output power when the laser is operated in transverse modes higher in order than TEM00, but …

Loci Of Invariant-Azimuth And Invariant-Ellipticity Polarization States Of An Optical System, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The loci of polarization states for which either the ellipticity alone or the azimuth alone remains invariant upon passing through an optical system are introduced. The cartesian equations of these two loci are derived in the complex plane in which the polarization states are represented. The equations are quartic and are conveniently expressed in terms of the elements of the Jones. matrix of the optical system. As an exple the loci are determined for a system composed of a π/4 rotator followed by a quarter-wave retarder.

Flowware -- A Flow Charting Method To Describe Digital Systems, Wayne Everett Omohundro

Doctoral Dissertations

"FLOWWARE is an interactive, graphical language to aid in the understanding and design of digital networks. The language is based upon the concept of flow charting. The user specifies the register layout of the system and the sequential operation in the form of a diagram on a graphics terminal. FLOWWARE makes full use of a local minicomputer to perform editing and drawing functions, and a remote large computer to perform translation and simulation. This division of labor allows the user to build his description off-line without having the remote computer program active"--Abstract, page ii.

Design And Operation Of A Microprogrammed Branch Driver For A Pdp-11 Computer., Lavon R. Biswell Dec 1972

Design And Operation Of A Microprogrammed Branch Driver For A Pdp-11 Computer., Lavon R. Biswell

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A Microprogramned Branch Driver (MBD) is the interface between Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-11 series computers and a multicrate CAMAC system. The MBD is a microprocessor-controlled multiple, direct memory access (DMA) channel branch driver.

The requirements for an MBD are discussed in the introduction and stem from a Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) study group report on the design of the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) data acquisition system. Because of the desire for the standard system, the types of experiments and data rates, and the varying complexity of the data acquisition systems, it was decided that a …

Analogy Between Linear Optical Systems And Linear Two-Port Electrical Networks, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara Oct 1972

Analogy Between Linear Optical Systems And Linear Two-Port Electrical Networks, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Attention is called to the analogy between linear optical systems and linear two-port electrical networks. For both, the transformation of a pair of oscillating quantities between input and output is of interest. The mapping of polarization by an optical system and of impedance (admittance) by a two-port network is described by a bilinear transformation. Therefore for each transfer property of a system of one type, there is a similar property for the system of the other type. Two-port electrical networks are synthesized whose impedance-(or admittance-) mapping properties are the same as the polarization-mapping properties of a given optical system. The …

Microprogramming For Probability Distribution Sampling, Theodore Gyle Lewis Aug 1972

Microprogramming For Probability Distribution Sampling, Theodore Gyle Lewis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microprogramming of special instructions for sampling of random variates from any probability distribution is a means of increasing sampling speed. The diversity of sampling techniques is narrowed to one general algorithm: conditional bit sampling. Conditional bit sampling uses a high-speed uniform random number generator based on feedback shift registers to sample one bit at a time. The probability of a bit being a one in the j-th position of a binary expanded variate is stored in a table of conditional probabilities. A comparison with the pseudorandom number yields a one or zero. The table of conditional probabilities is generated once …

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser Jul 1972

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Intended for audio engineers, Richard C. Heyser meant for this paper to bring attention to the misapplication of the theoretical concept, the Uncertainty Principle. Heyser argues that this concept has been "freely applied without regard to the errors which may result due to lack of understanding of its derivation."

Design Of Near-Time-Optimal Feedback Controllers., Chon Ho Hyon Jul 1972

Design Of Near-Time-Optimal Feedback Controllers., Chon Ho Hyon

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation presents a method for designing near-time-optimal feedback controllers of time-invariant linear normal systems in which the system matrix is negative definite and the control input is a bounded scalar function.

The basic design approach is to systematically construct a sequence of multiplane (piecewise linear) suboptimal switching surfaces which converges to the optimal switching surface and to test the quality of the suboptimal switching surface constructed in each iteration until one which satisfies the relative (optimal/suboptimal) performance criterion given a priori is obtained.

A New Optimization Procedure For Digital Simulation, Donald Howard Schroeder Jul 1972

A New Optimization Procedure For Digital Simulation, Donald Howard Schroeder

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The theory needed to define and obtain an optimized digital simulation of a given continuous system is presented in this dissertation. The frequency domain approach to simulation is used and a nonlinear function minimization algorithm, implemented on a digital computer, is incorporated to obtain the optimum simulation.

The discrete transfer function obtained from z-transform theory is used to represent the digital system. The frequency domain response of this discrete transfer function can then be expressed simply as a function of frequency, for frequencies up to one-half the sampling frequency. A frequency domain error measure, in the complex plane, is defined …

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Nonuniform Waveguides With Perfect Conducting Walls, Irwin Share Jun 1972

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Nonuniform Waveguides With Perfect Conducting Walls, Irwin Share

Dissertations

The analysis of nonuniform waveguides is formulated in terms of non-orthogonal generalized coordinates by utilizing the Hertz vector potentials and the Riemann metric tensor.

When the Hertz potential is expressible as a function of the propagation coordinate times a function of the transverse coordinates, then the nonuniform waveguide may be represented by transverse equations and a set of uncoupled nonuniform transmission lines. This decomposition facilitates studying propagation along the propagation coordinate. Sufficient conditions to achieve this decomposition are investigated. It is demonstrated that these constraints may provide guidelines for selecting a useful coordinate system to describe the nonuniform waveguide. In …

Methods For Acoustic Holography And Acoustic Measurements, Wolfgang Fischer Jun 1972

Methods For Acoustic Holography And Acoustic Measurements, Wolfgang Fischer

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a novel "four-step acoustical holographic imaging system" is described and several means for its implementation are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. This system is compared with other methods of acoustical holography, (ie. permitting to obtain a visible, 3-D image of an object insonified with supersonic waves) and some of its advantages are indicated.

The use of optical holographic techniques to convert an arbitrary acoustic image to a visible image is investigated and a new method - the "holographic sound image converter" - is introduced and analyzed. This converter consists of the "holographic interferometer" and an appropriate "coupler". …

Gallium-Arsenide-Phosphide Mis Capacitor Fabrication And Radiation-Effects Studies, Douglas H. Phillips May 1972

Gallium-Arsenide-Phosphide Mis Capacitor Fabrication And Radiation-Effects Studies, Douglas H. Phillips

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

GaAsP MIS capacitors were fabricated using several dielectric-growth processes, including RF sputtering, wet oxidation, and dry oxidation of GaAsP. Dry oxidation of GaAsP surfaces produced MIS devices having the best characteristics. Instabilities of early MIS capacitors were overcome by use of thermal cycling techniques and chromium-doped dielectrics. Deep-depletion characteristics were observed for GaAsP MIS C-V curves, even in the range of applied bias which theoretically should result in inversion of the GaAsP surface. Both low-frequency and high-frequency C-V data support the conclusion that inversion characteristics were not observed for GaAsP MIS capacitors. Calculated high-frequency surface-state density and surface-state charge values …

Intense Relativistic Charged Particle Beam Transport Phenomena In Vacuum, Alan Michael Chodor May 1972

Intense Relativistic Charged Particle Beam Transport Phenomena In Vacuum, Alan Michael Chodor

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this report is to investigate the nature of propagation processes for intense, relativistic charged particle beams in vacuum. Three areas of the problem are studied. The first subject, envelope optics, includes a formal development of the envelope equations and consideration of this approach as a device of approximation. Secondly, assuming laminar behavior, the entire beam is modeled in a closed set of partial differential equations in configuration space. A general study of this condition emphasizes invariants of laminar flow and geometric scaling. Finally, the coupled beam-field equations are solved exactly for several special cases. The optical properties …
