A socio economic computer simulation model for the State of Oregon is described. The Oregon State Simulation Model (OSSIM) includes a thirty-seven sector model of electrical energy consumption. Coupling between this model and the OSSIM ensures self-consistent scenarios of socio economic phenomena which underlie energy consumption. One of the purposes of this effort is to help state-level decision makers understand the determinants of electricity consumption within a context of changing economic conditions.

Evaluating The Total Cost Of An On-Site Solar Energy System, Dennis Costello, Jerry Bradley Oct 1975

Evaluating The Total Cost Of An On-Site Solar Energy System, Dennis Costello, Jerry Bradley

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A methodology for evaluating the total or life-cycle cost of an on-site solar energy system is presented. The costs represent after-tax or effective costs realized by the owner of the energy system. The methodology addresses: (1) capital costs; (2) fuel costs; (3) maintenance and operating costs; (4) property taxes; (5) the tax benefits of depreciation; and (6) the investment tax credit. The model was developed for evaluating solar energy systems located at the point where the energy is demanded. However, the methodology also has applicability to many other types of energy systems.

Industrial Innovations And Management Toward More Efficient Usage Of Electrical Energy, Tom Day

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper deals with some of the industrial accomplishments in alleviating energy supply and demand problems. A survey is presented on how electrical energy in America is generated, resources used and kilowatt usage for the years 1970 to and including 1974. Conservation of electrical energy is the main theme in which three primary areas of innovation and utilization of industrial equipment are discussed; induction, lighting, heating and air conditioning. An awareness of natural gas shortages and the trend toward an "electric economy" are reviewed. The real challenge to energy management is apparent in order to handle the greatest expansion in …

The Conservation Of Human Resources In Energy Systems, Burns E. Hegler, James D. Hoag Oct 1975

The Conservation Of Human Resources In Energy Systems, Burns E. Hegler, James D. Hoag

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The operation of an energy system often requires that its personnel engage in manual and technical activities that involve exposure to health and safety hazards. A typical electric utility is used as a model for studying the operation of safety and health programs for energy systems. Specific criteria regarding standards and management are presented and discussed. These criteria are general enough so that they may be applied in the management of future energy systems.

Natural Resource Pricing And Economic Development, Vaman Rao Oct 1975

Natural Resource Pricing And Economic Development, Vaman Rao

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In a competitive equilibrium the price of a natural resource will be increasing at a rate equal to the social time preference rate, but in a monopoly market, the price will be increasing at less than social time preference rate. If the producer countries utilise their monopoly of production and sale of a natural resource for the purpose of developing their economies, the price of the natural resource will be growing at the rate at which the producer countries' economies are growing, whether or not the sales proceeds are used to finance their investment programmes, fully or partly.

The paper presents several approaches to the conservation of energy in this area with the use of closed-loop computer control and optimization.

Design Of Film—Substrate Single-Reflection Retarders, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara Sep 1975

Design Of Film—Substrate Single-Reflection Retarders, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The design steps for film—substrate single-reflection retarders are briefly stated and applied to the SiO2—Si film—substrate system at wavelength 6328 Å. The criterion of minimum-maximum error of the ellipsometric angle ψ is used to choose angle-of-incidence-tunable designs. Use is made of the (Φ-d) plane (angle of incidence versus thickness) to determine whether a given film—substrate system with known optical properties and film thickness can operate as a reflection retarder and to determine the associated angles of incidence and retardation angles. This leads to the concept of permissible-thickness bands and forbidden gaps for operation of a film—substrate …

Investigation Of Electron-Beam Deposited Titanium Dioxide On Silicon For Application In Mos Devices, William David Brown Jul 1975

Investigation Of Electron-Beam Deposited Titanium Dioxide On Silicon For Application In Mos Devices, William David Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Titanium dioxide (Ti02) has been studied to determine the feasibility of using this dielectric material in Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor (MIS) structures. MIS structures utilizing various dielectric materials have received considerable attention in recent years. Materials such as titanium dioxide which exhibit a high permittivity are attractive as insulators in MIS devices because of high capacitive density, good surface control for thick films, large power handling capability, and reduction in device size.

Combined Reflection And Transmission Thin-Film Ellipsometry: A Unified Linear Analysis, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, M. Elshazly-Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara Jul 1975

Combined Reflection And Transmission Thin-Film Ellipsometry: A Unified Linear Analysis, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, M. Elshazly-Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A scheme of combined reflection and transmission ellipsometry on light-transmitting ambient-film-substrate systems is proposed and the required sample design and instrument operation are investigated. A comparative study of the sensitivity of external and internal reflection and transmission ellipsometry is carried out based on unified linear approximations of the exact equations. These approximations are general in that an arbitrary initial film thickness is assumed. They are simple, because a complex sensitivity function is introduced whose real and imaginary projections determine the psi (Ψ) and delta (Δ) sensitivity factors. Among the conclusions of this paper are the following. (1) External reflection ellipsometry …

An Investigation Of The Optical Absorption Properties Of Silicon As Related To Its Electrical Conductivity, Onofrio Louis Russo Jun 1975

An Investigation Of The Optical Absorption Properties Of Silicon As Related To Its Electrical Conductivity, Onofrio Louis Russo

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of obtaining the electrical conductivity of band gap semiconductors, by considering the absorption of radiation in the visible region. The experimental evidence confirmed predictions that the conductivities of the silicon samples are related to the horizontal displacement of energy in the absorption curves. The material used in this study was p-doped silicon, although the approach should be valid in general for either elemental or compound semiconductors.

The absorption coefficient for silicon was measured in the radiation region between 2.0 and 3.0 ev. This region above the indirect band gap (= …

Optimal Control And Identification Of Stochastic Systems Using Differential Game Theory, Harry Marvin Burbank Jun 1975

Optimal Control And Identification Of Stochastic Systems Using Differential Game Theory, Harry Marvin Burbank

Dissertations

This dissertation deals with linear systems subjected to stochastic disturbances. The class of stochastic processes considered is the class of second order stochastic processes characterized by having finite continuous covariance. The properties of the covariance provide means to formulate optimization problems without the difficulties present when the covariance is not finite or continuous.

The first aspect studied was several classes of optimal control problems. The effects of the stochastic processes were approximated by the effects of its first two moments. This procedure resulted in allowing optimal system controls to be found whatever the first two moments of the stochastic input …

Resonance Raman Scattering And Collision-Induced Redistribution Scattering In I2, D. L. Rousseau, G. D. Patterson, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We report the first experimental observation of broad-banded re-emission resulting from quasi-elastic collisional transfer processes. The data may be interpreted by the general theory of scattering of monochromatic light in gases. The connection between this theory and one derived for solids is discussed.

The Use Of A General-Purpose Heat Transfer Code For Casting Simulation, William Carl Erickson May 1975

The Use Of A General-Purpose Heat Transfer Code For Casting Simulation, William Carl Erickson

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The practical use of numerical techniques in simulating casting solidification dictate that a general purpose heat transfer code be used and that results be obtained in an easy-to-analyze format. Color film plotting routines were developed for use with NASA's CINDA-3G heat transfer code; the combination of which meet the above criteria. The subroutine LQSLTR written for SINDA, the successor to CINDA-3G, was verified by comparing calculated results obtained using LQSLTR with those obtained using the specific heat method for handling the heat of fusion. Excellent agreement existed when similar data was used. When the more restrictive requirement of a 1° …

Damage Analysis Modified Trac Computer Program (Damtrac), George H. Baker Iii, Alan D. Mcnutt, G. Bradford Shea, David M. Rubenstein

School of Integrated Sciences - Faculty Scholarship

A computer program tailored for EMP damage analysis of solid-state circuitry has been developed by modifying the existing TRAC network analysis program. Modification of the TRAC diode and transistor models to include breakdown parameters and the addition of a semiconductor device parameter library have greatly simplified the analyst's task. An added feature is a subroutine that automatically calculates the amplitude and duration of transient power dissipated in electronic circuit components.

Gaussian Modes In High Loss Laser Resonators, Lee W. Casperson, Susan D. Lunnam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Matrix techniques are applied to the mode analysis of laser resonators having spherical mirrors and Gaussian profiles of the mirror reflectivity. These same analytical methods provide a useful approximation to the mode and loss characteristics of conventional resonators having an abrupt discontinuity of the reflectivity. Mode selection in apertured waveguides and resonators is also discussed.

Integrated Circuits, Julio Garcia Mar 1975

Integrated Circuits, Julio Garcia

Graduate Research Papers

The technology of integrated circuits is_ almost new in Peru, writer's country-. It is being used mainly in black and white television sets and in some audio amplifier equipment. As any new technology, first, it is necessary to be very familiar with it in order to exploit it adequately and get all the benefits from it. The writer feels this lack of knowledge, and wants to take advantage of being here to learn the technology and techniques for using integrated circuits.

Ellipsometric Function Of A Film-Substrate System: Applications To The Design Of Reflection-Type Optical Devices And To Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ratio ρ = Rp/Rs of the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients Rp and Rs for light polarized parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) to the plane of incidence, reflected from an optically isotropic film-substrate system, is investigated as a function of the angle of incidence ϕ and the film thickness d. Both constant-angle-of-incidence contours (CAIC) and constant-thickness contours (CTC) of the ellipsometric function ρ(ϕ,d) in the complex ρ plane are examined. For transparent films, ρ(ϕ,d) is a periodic function of d with period Dϕ that is a function of ϕ. …

A Circular Active Reflector Atenna (Cara), Energy Distribution Calculations, And An Experimental Test, Larry V. Knight, George H. Barry Mar 1975

A Circular Active Reflector Atenna (Cara), Energy Distribution Calculations, And An Experimental Test, Larry V. Knight, George H. Barry

Faculty Publications

Conventional high-frequency (HF) circular phased arrays, such as the Wullenweber circular array, have a cost factor that increases at a greater-than-square law rate as its radius is increased to produce larger apertures. A new method of forming simultaneous beams in an HF circular array has been proposed in which beams are formed in the space within the array from pickup element energy that has been amplified and reradiated. Such a device is called a circular active reflector antenna (CARA), and its cost increases at a substantially linear rate as its radius is increased to form larger apertures. This paper describes …

Electron Trajectories In The Vicinity Of A Wire Mesh Placed Parallel To A Perfectly Conducting Ground Plane, Donald E. Jones Feb 1975

Electron Trajectories In The Vicinity Of A Wire Mesh Placed Parallel To A Perfectly Conducting Ground Plane, Donald E. Jones

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In the System Generated Electro-Magnetic Pulse (SGEMP) simulator, a flux of high energy photons are introduced into a vacuum chamber. These photons strike the walls of the chamber, producing compton electrons. As this effect is not present in the environment to be simulated, it is desirable to prevent these electrons from entering the working volume of the chamber.

Design Of A Yig-Tuned Oscillator, Tien Liang Jin Jan 1975

Design Of A Yig-Tuned Oscillator, Tien Liang Jin

Theses

A technique for designing YIG (yttrium-iron garnet) tuned transistor oscillators, tunable over the range of frequencies from 500 to 950 MHZ, is presented. The approach taken differs appreciably from that used in the design of conventional LC-tuned oscillators. One major difference is that the YIG tuning mechanism is electrically controlled. The YIG tuning element is treated as a single unit and is not resolved into an equivalent LC circuit. Instead, a direct method using reflection coefficients measured at network terminals to characterize various design stages is applied. The transistor is also characterized by reflection and transmission coefficients, i.e., S-parameters. Thus …
