Experimental, Analytical, And Numerical Studies On Multiconductor Transmission Lines, Ashok Kumar Agrawal Dec 1979

Experimental, Analytical, And Numerical Studies On Multiconductor Transmission Lines, Ashok Kumar Agrawal

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The time-domain transmission-line equations for uniform multiconductor transmission lines in a conductive, homogeneous medium excited by a transient, nonuniform electromagnetic field, are derived from Maxwell's equations. Depending on how the line voltage is defined, two formulations are possible. One of these formulations is considerably more convenient to apply than the other. The assumptions made in the derivation of the transmission-line equations and the boundary conditions at the terminations are discussed. For numerical calculations, the transmissionline equations are represented by finite-difference techniques, and numerical examples are included.

An effective method for computing the time-domain response of lossless multiconductor transmission lines with …

State Estimation Using Parallel Extended Kalman Filters Of Nonlinear Measurements, Thomas Carlyle Sheives Dec 1979

State Estimation Using Parallel Extended Kalman Filters Of Nonlinear Measurements, Thomas Carlyle Sheives

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The extended Kalman filter applied to state estimation using nonlinear measurements has demonstrated divergence in many applications involving large initial uncertainties because of "invalid" linearizations performed by the filter on the nonlinear measurement functions. No quantitative results can be found as to how invalid these linearizations must be before divergence occurs. This report attempts to fill this void by deriving the extended Kalman filter as an approximate nonlinear least squares estimator, through the minimization of a measurement squared error function. The convergence of the extended Kalman filter is then determined by examining the squared error function and verifying the usefulness …

Theory And Design Of Cyclotron-Wave Traveling-Wave Amplifiers, Arthur H. Gottfried Oct 1979

Theory And Design Of Cyclotron-Wave Traveling-Wave Amplifiers, Arthur H. Gottfried

Dissertations

A theory and design procedure for traveling-wave tubes using cyclotron-wave interactions is developed. An analysis is presented of the energy exchange mechanism and the axial beam velocity spread induced by the r.f. interactions. The analysis of the energy spread in a realistic model of the beam with nonzero size and nonzero space-charge density shows that higher maximum efficiencies at higher power is attainable (with collector depression) in cyclotron-wave amplifiers than in synchronous-wave amplifiers.

A one-watt, and a ten-watt cyclotron-wave amplifier at 3 GHz, utilizing bifilar helix circuits, scaled from a 2 kW, 5 GHz design, were constructed. A computer was …

Calculation Of The Singularity Expanision Method Parameters From The Transient Response Of A Thin Wire, Kah-Song Cho

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The problem of determining the singularity expansion method (SEM) parameters from transient thin-wire data is examined. A computer code is used to generate response data. The SEM parameters are computed from these data. For noisy data, it is shown that the parameter values can be improved by signal averaging.

Digital Signal Processing With An Adaptive Delay Element, Delores Maria Etter Aug 1979

Digital Signal Processing With An Adaptive Delay Element, Delores Maria Etter

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A new element, the adaptive delay, is developed as a means for synchronizing two signals that are highly correlated. An LMS error function derived and gradient techniques are used to determine an adaptive delay algorithm. Like Widrow's adaptive filter coefficient algorithm, this adaptive delay algorithm does not explicitly utilize a priori statistics on the input signals. However, unlike the LMS error function for the adaptive filter, the LMS error function for the adaptive delay is not quadratic. Thus, the error function will be required to be unimodal in order to assure convergence of the adaptive delay to its optimum value. …

Direct Relation Between Fresnel’S Interface Reflection Coefficients For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1979

Direct Relation Between Fresnel’S Interface Reflection Coefficients For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

We have found a significant relation, rp = rs (rs -cos2ϕ)/(1-rs cos2ϕ), between Fresnel’s interface complex-amplitude reflection coefficients rp and rs for the parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) polarizations at the same angle of incidence ϕ. This relation is universal in that it applies to reflection at all interfaces between homogeneous isotropic media collectively and, of course, throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. We investigate the properties of this function, rp = f (rs), and its inverse,rs = g (rp), as …

Noise Performance Of The Klapper-Kratt Low Delay Fm Detector, Allan Brown Tarbell May 1979

Noise Performance Of The Klapper-Kratt Low Delay Fm Detector, Allan Brown Tarbell

Dissertations

In this dissertation the dual differentiator version of the Klapper-Kratt FM detector family is investigated with additive Gaussian noise. Prior analysis of this new detector family has been limited to the noiseless case.

The investigation was conducted both analytically and experimentally. First, the dual differentiator version of the Klapper-Kratt detector was mathematically analyzed, assuming an unmodulated carrier plus additive Gaussian noise. This analysis was verified by assembling the detector and measuring its performance in the laboratory.

It was discovered that the Klapper-Kratt detector without limiter performs identically to the conventional limiter discriminator in the linear improvement region. When compared to …

Signal Processing Techniques For Analysis Of Heart Sounds And Electrocardiograms, Alan D. Bernstein May 1979

Signal Processing Techniques For Analysis Of Heart Sounds And Electrocardiograms, Alan D. Bernstein

Dissertations

Audible heart sounds represent less than 5% of the vibrational energy associated with the cardiac cycle. In this study, experiments have been conducted to explore the feasibility of examining cardiac vibration by means of a single display encompassing the entire bandwidth of the oscillations and relating components at different frequencies. Zero-phase-shift digital filtering is shown to be required in producing such displays, which extend from a recognizable phonocardiogram at one frequency extreme to a recognizable apexcardiogram at the other. Certain features in mid-systole and early diastole, observed by means of this technique, appear not to have been previously described.

Frequency …

Synthesis Of Multiarea Grid Power Systems, Bharat C. Patel May 1979

Synthesis Of Multiarea Grid Power Systems, Bharat C. Patel

Dissertations

This dissertation presents improved development in the formation of a generalized transmission loss (B)-matrix for a multiarea grid power system. In the procedure, the individual tie powers of each area are replaced by the net interchange, sneak and circulating powers. The latter two variables are directly eliminated in the power reference frame using actual impedances, unlike current methods that require the elimination of sneak and circulating currents, the formation of complex tie current model and the complex tie power model. Consequently, manipulation of large complex current, power and impedance matrices is avoided reducing both computer time and memory requirement. Further, …

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter May 1979

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter

Theses

A mathematical model describing the displayed selectivity of the kidney nephron to macromolecules of varying particle size is presented. Diffusion and electrical forces are considered to be the sole mechanisms of transfer. The mass transfer principles responsible for selectivity are considered to occur within the capillary structure, and not within the membrane wall. A charge is assumed to be characteristic of the macromolecule and the membrane wall. Models describing both charged and uncharged solutes are developed.

A non-linear least squares technique, developed by Marquardt, is used to curve fit the derived functions to data relating fractional clearances of dextran and …

This study was performed to determine the spectral signatures of deer and their natural background elements for censusing purposes. Consideration was given to atmospheric transmittance, acceptable flying weather, and terrain. Possible spectral bands between 0.3 and 14.0 μm were obtained (over a pathlength of 1500 feet at an altitude of 5000 feet) based upon atmospheric transmittance using the LOWTRAN 3B computer program. They are: 0.30 - 1.33, 1.49 - 1.79, 2.00 - 2.50, 3.00 - 3.16, 3.38 - 4.10, 4.59 - 5.05, and 8.00 - 13.33 μm, for transmittance greater than 75%. Weather conditions are favorable for flying and taking …

Feature Selection And Classifier Design With Applications To Remote Sensing Of Mule Deer, Manmohan M. Trivedi May 1979

Feature Selection And Classifier Design With Applications To Remote Sensing Of Mule Deer, Manmohan M. Trivedi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The feasibility of an airborne system to census deer populations using remote sensing techniques is evaluated in this research. The analysis is based upon the study of spectral signatures of deer and various background objects. The deer detection problem is modeled as a multispectral pattern recognition problem where the classification is performed in a multidimensional feature space. A generalized scene, of which the winter range may be considered typical is used in the classification. It includes the deer, evergreen trees, sagebrush, and dry brush against a snow background. The signature stability study led to the conclusion that the direction-angles of …

Classical Modeling Of A Phosphate Molecule (Including 3-D Computer Graphics Display), Ronald A. Tafoya Apr 1979

Classical Modeling Of A Phosphate Molecule (Including 3-D Computer Graphics Display), Ronald A. Tafoya

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

An investigation is made of the classical force terms necessary to model adequately the structure and interatomic forces of the phosphate molecule. The two principal considerations chosen for use in judging the performance of models were:

1. Agreement with empirical spectral data on normal mode vibrational frequencies

2. Agreement with other known physical characteristics of the phosphate molecule

The performance of all models was good. Agreement with normal mode frequencies and phosphorus-oxygen bond lengths ranged from an RMS error of 5.4% in Model one to an RMS error of 1.5% in Model Five. An examination was made of six different …

A Numerical Investigation Of Nonlinear Resistance In Second-Order Autonomous Dynamic Networks, John Jerome Bornholdt Apr 1979

A Numerical Investigation Of Nonlinear Resistance In Second-Order Autonomous Dynamic Networks, John Jerome Bornholdt

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Most approaches to the analysis of autonomous nonlinear networks fall under one or more of three categories: topological techniques, stability analysis, and approximate methods. The first method is universal, linear or nonlinear. The application of computer techniques has given strong emphasis to the latter. Approximate methods can give results on estimations of how network components affect stability.

This paper is an investigation of the stability of nonlinear resistance in autonomous dynamic networks through approximate methods.

A system that is both unforced and time-invariant is called autonomous. Linear autonomous networks lend themselves to general analytic solutions. With nonlinear autonomous networks, however, …

Transformation Of Fresnel’S Interface Reflection And Transmission Coefficients Between Normal And Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam Apr 1979

Transformation Of Fresnel’S Interface Reflection And Transmission Coefficients Between Normal And Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

If w denotes an interface Fresnel reflection or transmission coefficient for s- or p-polarized light at an oblique angle of incidence ø, and z denotes the same coefficient at normal incidence, we find that w is an analytic function of z, w = ƒ(z), that depends on ø but not on the specific optical properties of the two media on both sides of the interface. All four functions that correspond to the four distinct Fresnel coefficients and their inverses are determined. We single out for detailed examination, as an example, the relationship between the reflection of s -polarized light at …

Scalar‐Wave Approach For Single‐Mode Inhomogeneous Fiber Problems, Lee W. Casperson, Cavour W. Yeh, W. P. Brown Apr 1979

Scalar‐Wave Approach For Single‐Mode Inhomogeneous Fiber Problems, Lee W. Casperson, Cavour W. Yeh, W. P. Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It has generally been accepted that accurate results may be obtained using the scalar‐wave approach to solve problems dealing with inhomogeneous multimode guided‐wave structures. The problem of the applicability of the scalar‐wave approach to obtain wave propagation characteristics in single‐mode fiber or integrated optical circuit guides with inhomogeneous index profiles is examined in this paper. It is shown that if certain limiting conditions are satisfied, the scalar‐wave approach will yield valid results for single‐mode structures. These limiting conditions are usually satisfied by many practical single‐mode inhomogeneous fibers or IOC structures.

Beam Deflection In A Pulsed Chemical Laser Amplifier, J. Munch, Lee W. Casperson, E. C. Rea Mar 1979

Beam Deflection In A Pulsed Chemical Laser Amplifier, J. Munch, Lee W. Casperson, E. C. Rea

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Analyses and experiments have been performed to investigate deflection of a Gaussian beam propagating through an amplifying medium possessing a strong transverse gain gradient. The analysis includes effects due to dispersion and gain steering. The experiments were performed in a high power pulsed chemical laser amplifier using a cw frequency stabilized laser as a source. Time dependent beam deflection due to the interaction of the gain gradient with the finite radius of curvature of the propagating beam was observed.

Reflection Of An Electromagnetic Plane Wave With 0 Or Π Phase Shift At The Surface Of An Absorbing Medium, R. M.A. Azzam Mar 1979

Reflection Of An Electromagnetic Plane Wave With 0 Or Π Phase Shift At The Surface Of An Absorbing Medium, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

An electromagnetic plane wave incident obliquely from a transparent medium onto the surface of an absorbing medium can be reflected with 0 or π phase shift if (i) the wave is p (TM) polarized, and (ii) the complex relative dielectric function ε is such that 0 ≤|ε| 2/2Re(ε) ≤ 1. Furthermore, the locus of ε such that the reflection coefficient for the p polarization is real at the same angle of incidence, is a circle, and that of ε½ (the complex relative refractive index) is Bernoulli’s lemniscate.

Scattering Of Focused Beams By Tenuous Particles, S. Colak, Cavour W. Yeh, Lee W. Casperson Feb 1979

Scattering Of Focused Beams By Tenuous Particles, S. Colak, Cavour W. Yeh, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper deals with the problem of the scattering of focused laser beams by tenuous particles using an iterative technique. The results are shown to be accurate provided that (a) the polarizability of the particle medium is small and (b) the phase shift of the central ray is less than 2. It was found that when the size of the incident beam waist is close to that of the scatterer, the scattered field deviates significantly from that for the incident plane wave case. Specific examples are given.
