Dynamic Laryngeal Analysis : Hardware And Software, Augustine Chan

Theses

A data acquisition and analysis system has been built and tested for the study of laryngeal dynamics: The system uses a computer to control the digitizing rate and to coordinate the pitch prompting for the subject. Tokens of steady state laryngeal vibration are obtained from an electroglottograph when the subject intones a series of computer prompted pitches in a musically scalar sequence. The system digitize the data at a basic rate of 200 samples per laryngeal cycle: This procedure enables the system to perform a modal analysis of laryngeal function: The signal processing and analysis procedure developed displays voice registration …

Design Of Code Division Multiple Access Systems, Nakrendrakumar Patel Jan 1986

Design Of Code Division Multiple Access Systems, Nakrendrakumar Patel

Theses

The intent of the work "Design of Code Division Multiple Access systems (CDMA) " is to consider different aspects of design with their effect on system performance. The generation of binary shift register sequences, that is maximal length sequences, with their properties are presented. From these maximal length sequences the Gold codes are obtained which are the most suitable approximately orthogonal codes for designing CDMA systems. These are discussed with their specific crosscorrelation properties. An extensive discussion is given of the difficult problem of synchronization, thatis bothacquisitionandtracking of pseudonoise sequences. Different synchronizing methods are discussed along with their relative performance. …

Theses

The objective of this thesis research was to generate atomic nitrogen to react with Ga being deposited by an Ion Cluster Beam method to prepare GaN thin films. An experimental reactor was designed and constructed to generate atomic nitrogen by making use of a microwave induced discharge to dissociate molecular nitrogen into atomic nitrogen. The concentration and the flow rate of the atomic nitrogen arriving at the substrate were measured by titration with nitrous oxide. The experiments were done with 0.32 square cm quartz tubing at room temperature over the nitrogen pressure range from 0.14 torr to 0.56 torr. Results …

State-Feedback Control Of Non-Linear Systems, Stanislaw H. Żak, Carl A. Maccarley Jan 1986

State-Feedback Control Of Non-Linear Systems, Stanislaw H. Żak, Carl A. Maccarley

Electrical Engineering

A design method for state-feedback controllers for single-input non-linear systems is proposed. The method makes use of the transformations of the non-linear system into ‘controllable-like’ canonical forms. The resulting non-linear state feedback is designed in such a way that the eigenvalues of the linearized closed-loop model are invariant with respect to any constant operating point. The method constitutes an alternative approach to the design methodology recently proposed by Baumann and Rugh. Also a review of different transformation methods for non-linear systems is presented. An example and simulation results of different control strategies are provided to illustrate the design technique.

Alternate Presentation Of Fourier Transform Development From Fourier Series., Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An alternate presentation of the development of the Fourier transform from the complex exponential Fourier series is presented. It uses spectral concepts to aid the mathematical development and a redefined spectral form for the spectral information obtained with the Fourier series. It has been used a number of times in the classroom and has been found to aid the students' understanding of the Fourier transform and the spectra of an aperiodic signal.

Growth Of Ultrafine Particles By Brownian Coagulation, S. H. Suck Salk, R. E. Thurman, Chang-Soo Kim Jan 1986

Growth Of Ultrafine Particles By Brownian Coagulation, S. H. Suck Salk, R. E. Thurman, Chang-Soo Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Current atmospheric observations tend to support the view that continental tropospheric aerosols (particularly urban aerosols) show multimodal mass distributions in the size range of 0.01-100 μm. The origin of these aerosols is both natural and anthropogenic. Recently, trimodal sub-μm size distributions from combustion measurements at 0.008, 0.035 and 0.15 μm were also observed. Our interest in the present study is the secondary process of growth of sub-μm size aerosols by the coagulation process alone. Using the 'J-space' (integer-space) distribution method of Salk (Suck) and Brock (1979, J. Aerosol Sci. 10, 58-590), we report an accurate numerical simulation study of the …

Electrodeposition And Analysis Of Tin Selenide Films, R. D. Engelken, Jack L. Boone, A. Shahnazary Jan 1986

Electrodeposition And Analysis Of Tin Selenide Films, R. D. Engelken, Jack L. Boone, A. Shahnazary

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sn1±xSe films have been electrodeposited from aqueous solutions containing SnCl2 and ionically dissolved SeO2 or H2SeO3 and DMF solutions containing SnCl2 and molecularly dissolved selenium powder. The as-deposited films ranged from amorphous to polycrystalline and exhibited indirect or nondirect bandgaps from 0.85 to 0.95 eV. There was little difference between the appearance or material data of the films grown by the two techniques. Direct reaction between Sn++ and H2SeO3 or HSeO3_ in the aqueous solutions yielded a Se/SnxSe suspension/precipitate. Although this does not seem to have any serious effect on the deposition process, it does produce a decrease in the …

An Experimental Investigation Of Electrochemical Memory Cells, Timothy Jules Martin Jan 1986

An Experimental Investigation Of Electrochemical Memory Cells, Timothy Jules Martin

Masters Theses

"An experimental electrochemical memory cell was constructed using a Pt cathode, Cu anode, and CuS04 electrolyte. The mechanism of operation of this cell consisted of plating and stripping of Cu from the Pt cathode. A cathode surface area of l.33 X 10-4 cm2 required approximately 700 μs to store 5 monolayers of Cu, writing time. The access time would be the time required to measure the Pt/Cu potential and was undetermined. Fifteen seconds were projected to oxidize the plated copper, producing loss of information, resulting in poor volatility characteristics of the cell. However, this electrochemical memory cell …

Effect Of Impurity Trapping On The Capacitance‐Voltage Characteristics Of N‐Gaas/N‐Algaas Heterojunctions, K. L. Tan, Mark S. Lundstrom, Michael R. Melloch Jan 1986

Effect Of Impurity Trapping On The Capacitance‐Voltage Characteristics Of N‐Gaas/N‐Algaas Heterojunctions, K. L. Tan, Mark S. Lundstrom, Michael R. Melloch

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We have studied the capacitance-voltage (C- V) characteristics of Schottky barriers on inverted nGaAs/ N-AIGaAs and normal N-AIGaAs/n-GaAs heterojunctions. Impurities introduced during film growth produced a negative sheet charge of 6.0 X 10 II cm -2 at the interface of the inverted n-GaAs/N-AIGaAs heterojunction. The effectiveness of GaAs quantum wells in trapping these impurities was investigated. GaAs quantum wells 20 A wide were placed in intervals of 2500 A for the first 0.75 pm of the AIGaAs layer; in the last 0.25 pm, the periodicity of the quantum wells was progressively decreased by half with the last quantum well placed …

A Loran-C Antenna Coupling Unit., Timothy Andrew Reilly 1963- Jan 1986

A Loran-C Antenna Coupling Unit., Timothy Andrew Reilly 1963-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project is the design of an antenna-coupling unit (ACU) that will operate with the Texas Instruments LORAN-C receiver and a 28-inch antenna. The height of the antenna used at the present is eight feet. Since the application of LORAN-C positioning is being expanded to vehicular location, an eight-foot antenna is not practical. The shorter antenna is necessary to prohibit striking trees, overpasses, etc. The newly designed ACU has more voltage gain to compensate for the attenuation of the incoming signal due to the shortening of the antenna. It also has a bandpass of 90 KHz-110 KHz with the center …

An Exact Analysis For Efficient Computation Of Random-Pattern Testability In Combinational Circuits, Sharad C. Seth, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Vishwani Agrawal Jan 1986

An Exact Analysis For Efficient Computation Of Random-Pattern Testability In Combinational Circuits, Sharad C. Seth, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Vishwani Agrawal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Experimental evidence shows that low testability in a typical circuit is much more likely due to poor observability than poor controllability. Thus, from theoretical and practical standpoints, it is important to develop an accurate model for observability computation. One such model, in terms of supergates, is proposed in the first part of this paper thus complimenting our earlier work. It is now possible to obtain exact random-pattern testability for each line in a circuit.

The second part of the paper analyzes the supegate structure of a circuit from a graph theoretic viewpoint. Finding a supergate is related to determining the …

Detailed discussion outlines the CPU facilities used to implement the forward-chaining and backtracking functions for the UPM. The UPM features are compared to the PLM-1, a microsequenced Prolog inference engine under development at University of California, Berkley. An emulation of the …

Silicon-On-Insulator Technology By Crystallization On Quartz Substrates, Helmut Baumgart Jan 1986

Silicon-On-Insulator Technology By Crystallization On Quartz Substrates, Helmut Baumgart

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The purpose of the novel zone-melting recrystallization process (ZMR) is to produce single crystalline Si films on Si02 of high crystalline perfection, which are suitable for device fabrication and subsequent industrial applications. However, silicon films grown on amorphous insulating substrates without seeding contain regularly spaced subgrain boundaries as their predominant growth defect and to a lesser degree twin boundaries and some grain boundaries. Detailed materials studies have revealed the core structure of these extended defects and the fundamental mechanisms responsible for subgrain boundary formation. The nature and origin of subgrain boundaries is reviewed and a model for polygonization of the …

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi Jan 1986

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi

Dissertations and Theses

Image representation plays an important role in image processing applications, which usually. contain a huge amount of data. An image is a two-dimensional array of points, and each point contains information (eg: color). A 1024 by 1024 pixel image occupies 1 mega byte of space in the main memory. In actual circumstances 2 to 3 mega bytes of space are needed to facilitate the various image processing tasks. Large amounts of secondary memory are also required to hold various data sets.

In this thesis, two different operations on the quadtree are presented.

There are, in general, two types of data …

Propagation Of Optical Waves In Tapered Fibers And Metallic Wave Guides, Bahram Zandi Jan 1986

Propagation Of Optical Waves In Tapered Fibers And Metallic Wave Guides, Bahram Zandi

Dissertations and Theses

The equations tor the propagation of Electromagnetic and Optical waves in tapered fibers and metallic waveguides are derived. Solutions are derived for the displacement of the beam from the waveguide axis as a function of distance along the axis, and also tor the beam width as a function of distance. These equations are solved numerically for a variety of tapered guides. Experiments are conducted which verify the theoretical results.

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily Dec 1985

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Transparent bilayer coatings that produce total refraction (TR) of obliquely incident monochromatic light into an underlying substrate are considered. When the substrate is transparent, it is shown that TR takes place without any accompanying change of polarization. Totally refracting bilayers are realizable in the IR where high-refractive-index substrates are available. This is illustrated by a BaF2–ZnSe bilayer on a Ge substrate at a 10.6-μm (CO2-laser) wavelength and 45° angle of incidence. Limited changes of the angle of incidence, wavelength, and refractive indices and thicknesses of the two films of the bilayer are introduced, and their effects …

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Dec 1985

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Free Electron Density Measurements By Ir Absorption In Cds, Jack L. Boone, Gene Cantwell, Michael D. Shaw Dec 1985

Free Electron Density Measurements By Ir Absorption In Cds, Jack L. Boone, Gene Cantwell, Michael D. Shaw

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A contactless method for determining the spatial variation of the free carrier density in CdS is presented. The method involves the correlation of IR transmission with the free carrier density via the IR absorption coefficient. Preliminary measurements indicate a free electron density sensitivity of less than 5x1014 cm-3 and a spatial resolution which is limited only by the spot size of a CO2 (λ=10.6 μm) laser; this should be of the order of 100 μm. Experimental results indicate that the predominate scattering is due to impurity interaction at room temperature; this is indicative of the high degree of compensation in …
