Monolithic Induction-Sourced Ac-To-Dc Power Supply Design, Jianhua Chen Sep 1990

Monolithic Induction-Sourced Ac-To-Dc Power Supply Design, Jianhua Chen

Theses

This thesis describes techniques with design nomographs for supplying power to CMOS and microelectromechanical implanted devices. These applications require voltages in the range of 5 to 50 volts. Different kinds of voltage multiplier circuits were used to achieve high voltage output. The AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC capacitive bootstrap voltage multipliers are designed and analyzed. The AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC inductive bootstrap voltage multiplier circuits are presented and the SPICE simulations are done with those circuits. Four different options of inductive link high voltage power supply are presented, analyzed and compared. The link parameters of two VLSI-compatible square-shaped coils are calculated in both …

Optimization Of Bandwidth Allocation In Atm Nets Through Simulated Annealing, Chien-Long Hou Sep 1990

Optimization Of Bandwidth Allocation In Atm Nets Through Simulated Annealing, Chien-Long Hou

Theses

Optimization of Bandwidth Allocation in ATM network is considered in this thesis. We address the problem of determining optimal bandwidth allocation in such BISDN's that adopt ATM as their basic switching. technique by using Simulated Annealing. Computer simulation shows that this optimal policy leads to the configuration which yields the minimum average packet delay.

Landmark-Based Shape Recognition By A Modified Hopfield Neural Network, Kuowei Li Sep 1990

Landmark-Based Shape Recognition By A Modified Hopfield Neural Network, Kuowei Li

Theses

In this thesis, we introduce a new thethod to achieve partial shape recognition by means of a modified Hopfield neural network. To recognize partially visible object, we represent each object by a set of "landmarks." The landmarks of an object are points of interest relative to the object that have important shape attributes. Given a scene consisting of partially occluded objects, a model object in the scene is hypothesized by matching the landmarks of the model with those in the scene. A measure of similarity between two landmarks, one from a model and the other from the scene, is needed …

A Quantization Noise Feedback Technique In Pyramid Image Coding, Zhili Lin Sep 1990

A Quantization Noise Feedback Technique In Pyramid Image Coding, Zhili Lin

Theses

In communication, we frequently encounter the problem about the trans-mission rate and quantization noise. That is, small quantization noise or high fidelity definitely increases transmission rate, or large quantization noise or low fidelity might require low transmission rate. In our research, we developed a quantization noise feedback technique, with which quantization noise can be reduced greatly at a given transmission rate. We applied this technique in pyramid image coding environment. An error analysis in frequency domain was carried out. Error estimation for pyramid image coding with and without quantization noise feedback was made. Finally, plenty of computer simulation confirms our …

Decomposing Non-Product Form Queuing Lattices Through Simulated Annealing, Jr-Chin Lin Sep 1990

Decomposing Non-Product Form Queuing Lattices Through Simulated Annealing, Jr-Chin Lin

Theses

A random, heuristic search called Simulated Annealing is adapted to decompose the state transition lattice of Non-Product Form Queuing Models. Simulated Annealing Algorithm has been successfully applied to a number of optimization problem such as The Traveling Salesman Problem, Graph Partionning, Physical Computer Design, VLSI Chip Design, Image Processing,... etc. It has the advantage over other gradient descent techniques to solve the combinatorial problems. The solution can escape from local minimum by adding Boltzmann Distribution Factor to the algorithm. Most lattice of non-product form queuing models can be decomposed into Solvable Subsets through this algorithm, and solvable subset is the …

A Novel Schottky Barrier Mosfet For Vlsi Applications, Venkata S. Simhadri Sep 1990

A Novel Schottky Barrier Mosfet For Vlsi Applications, Venkata S. Simhadri

Theses

Schottky barrier MOSFETs are expected to offer certain fabrication advantages, low series resistance and the feasibility to go into sub-micron technology without having short-channel effects. A p-channel MOSFET using Schottky contacts as source and drain is reviewed theoritically. The limitations of the device arising from the oxide offset between source/channel is studied with the help of one dimensional simulation SEDAN. The process sequence leads to an offset between source and channel. The performance of the SBMOSFETs with and without offset is estimated using two dimensional device simulation program PISCES-II for PtSi and IrSi as source and drain material. A novel …

Reflection And Transmission Through Achiral-Chiral Interface, Jia-Feng Wang Sep 1990

Reflection And Transmission Through Achiral-Chiral Interface, Jia-Feng Wang

Theses

Electromagnetic wave propagation through an achiral-chiral interface is analyzed via Maxwell's equations using the appropriate boundary conditions. Experimental data for reflected power from achiral-chiral interface was found to be in qualitative agreement with the analytical results. In addition, coupled mode equations for chiral cladding waveguides were derived and solved for weak coupling. The experimental results of chiral cladding waveguides show that an average of about 0.2° per cm in polarization rotation occurred. These waveguides were fabricated by using spin-coating deposition. The sense of the rotation was found to be independent of the handness of the cladding chirality, which was predicted …

Measurement Of Cluster Size By Retarding Potential And Time-Of- Flight Methods In An Ionized Cluster Beam Deposition System, Yung-Kuan Wang Sep 1990

Measurement Of Cluster Size By Retarding Potential And Time-Of- Flight Methods In An Ionized Cluster Beam Deposition System, Yung-Kuan Wang

Theses

The goal of this research was to study the mass distribution of ions generated in the Ionized Cluster Beam (ICB) deposition system. The ICB deposition method has been used to form high quality films of metals and other materials. It was postulated that the clusters consisting of hundreds and thousands of atoms produced by vapor expansion in the ICB source are responsible for the superior film properties. However, consistent experimental evidence concerning the cluster mass distribution, or even the existence of such clusters in the ICB apparatus, was lacking.

Two methods of cluster ion mass spectroscopy were used in this …

Neural Net Classification Of States In Finite State Vector Quantization, Zhigang Zhang Sep 1990

Neural Net Classification Of States In Finite State Vector Quantization, Zhigang Zhang

Theses

In this thesis, a new image coding technique based on Neural Network Finite State Vector Quantization(NNFSVQ) is presented. The new design takes advantage of the high interblock spatial correlation of pixels in typical grey-level images, in addition to intrablock correlation already exploited by vector quantization (VQ). Although many FSVQ require large memory space for the storage of the numerous state codebooks, the memory space requirement of NNFSVQ can be reduced by a very large factor (about 102-103) to manageable size without impairing image quality. Simulation experiments have shown that by using NNFSVQ the bit rate can …

Optical Processors For Smart Structures, Barry G. Grossman, Howard Hou, Ramzi H. Nassar Sep 1990

Optical Processors For Smart Structures, Barry G. Grossman, Howard Hou, Ramzi H. Nassar

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

For underwater fiber-optic sensor arrays containing hundreds of sensors as well as smart aerospace structures and skins using fiber-optic strain sensor arrays, the output of the sensors are optical signals that are a function of the measurand. We are also employing optical signals to energize smart-structure actuators (shape-memory alloys). An all-optical processor would thus seem to be logical choice for the processor since we must simultaneously process, in real time, multiple optical input (sensor) signals and generate multiple output (actuator) signals. In addition, with an all-optical processor, there would be no reduction in processor performance due to converting between optical …

Optimized Cross Correlation Waveforms For First Order Correlation Loops, Kurt Louis Kosbar Sep 1990

Optimized Cross Correlation Waveforms For First Order Correlation Loops, Kurt Louis Kosbar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, the steady state mean square tracking error of first order correlation loops is minimized by varying the locally generated cross correlation function produced by the voltage controlled oscillator. This analysis should assist in the design of modified first order delay locked loops used for pseudonoise code synchronization in direct sequence spread spectrum receivers. The optimum cross correlation waveform is generated by filtering a replica of the originally transmitted signal. The optimal filter imposes a 90 degree phase shift at all frequencies and has an amplitude response that is a function of the channel signal to noise ratio. …

Experimental Performance Of A Binary Phase-Only Optical Correlator Using Visual And Infrared Imagery, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Sandra L. Halby, Wesley E. Foor

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Experimental results of an optical binary phase-only correlator using both visual and IR imagery are presented. The inputs to the correlator originate from actual aerial imagery containing aircraft and a variety of distortions. Filters used as a database for the system are derived from models of aircraft. Digital image processing techniques are used on images before being input into the optical correlator to enhance the performance of the system. Both noise removing and segmentation techniques are investigated. Input images to the correlator are displayed on a 128×128 magneto-optic spatial light modulator (SLM). Experimental results are presented which show that the …

Design Of A Microengineered Pressure Sensor, Ranjeet Alexis Aug 1990

Design Of A Microengineered Pressure Sensor, Ranjeet Alexis

Theses

A new family of microengineered vacuum ionization gauges of an approximate volume of 200µ3 has been designed. These devices can he fabricated using existing semiconductor processing capabilities. The focus of this thesis is to scale down the current state-of-the-art for ionization sensors to micron dimensions. These gauges can be manufactured economically and potentially will be integrated with more complex structures and circuitry. In these devices an active ionization volume of micron dimensions is used for launching ions in a trajectory towards a collection electrode. Ionization of gas species is accomplished by an electron flux of sufficient energy. Analysis of …

Decomposing Non-Product Form Queuing Lattices Through Genetic Algorithm, Wei Han Aug 1990

Decomposing Non-Product Form Queuing Lattices Through Genetic Algorithm, Wei Han

Theses

In this paper, a Genetic Algorithm technique is adapted to decompose the state transition lattice of a class of non-product form queueing models. Genetic Algorithms are search algorithms based upon the mechanics of natural genetics. They combine a survival-of-the-fittest among string structures with a structured, yet randomized, information exchange to form a search algorithm with some of the innovative flair of human search. While randomized, genetic algorithms are no simple random walk. They efficiently exploit historical information to speculate on new search points with improved performance. Here genetic algorithms is applied to a non-product queueing lattices optimization problem. Only the …

Comparative Analysis Of Single And Double Dwell Acquisition Schemes, Gurinder Singh Ahluwalia Aug 1990

Comparative Analysis Of Single And Double Dwell Acquisition Schemes, Gurinder Singh Ahluwalia

Theses

Single and double dwell pseudonoise (PN) acquisition systems are described, explained and analyzed. These systems are designed to synchronize a locally generated PN signal with a received PN signal of unknown phase in the presence of noise. The mean, variance and an approximate probability distribution function (PDF) of the acquisition time for the single and double dwell PN acquisition schemes is developed. Intuitively, the double dwell acquisition system should be superior to the single dwell system because of the ability to quickly dismiss incorrect cells and further verify probable hits. It is shown analytically that this is in fact true …

Point Pattern Matching By A Genetic Algroithm, Minghwang Chen Aug 1990

Point Pattern Matching By A Genetic Algroithm, Minghwang Chen

Theses

The problem we consider is to find a subset of points in a pattern that best match to a subset of points in another pattern through a transformation in a least squares sense. Exhaustive search to find the best assignment mapping one set of points to another set is, if the number of points that are to be matched is large, computationally expensive. We develop a genetic algorithm which searches for the best ("almost the best") assignment efficiently. To map the point pattern matching into the framework of a genetic algorithm, we use a fitness function which inversely proportional to …

Performance Evaluation Of Consumer Electronic Bus, Sairaj R. Pakkam Aug 1990

Performance Evaluation Of Consumer Electronic Bus, Sairaj R. Pakkam

Theses

This thesis describes the performance evaluation of the Consumer Electronic Bus proposed by the Electronic Industries Association. To study the behaviour of CEBUS under different traffic conditions, a simulation program was developed modelling the layer architecture of CEBUS. The CEBUS is based on the ISO/OSI model of layered architecture. The simulation results have shown that, when the throughput of the network is small, the delay is bounded for all messages of all priorities. As the throughput of the network increases, under the presence of more high priority messages, the lower priority messages get queued at their nodes. It is also …

Hardware Algorithms For Computing Transcendental Functions, Xin-Pei Gong Aug 1990

Hardware Algorithms For Computing Transcendental Functions, Xin-Pei Gong

Theses

The COordinate Rotation Digital Computer(CORDIC) is a special-purpose digital computer for real-time airborne computation. In this computer, a unique computing technique is employed which is especially suitable for solving the trigonometric relationships. A new computing technique based on the CORDIC algorithm is developed to reduce the number of iterations by one half for each input angle. This improvement is accomplished. by scanning multiple bits of the input angle(in our case, two) at a time. The CORDIC equations are rewritten accordingly and a hardware implementation structure is also presented. The results of the software simulation of the new algorithm are as …

Conditional Artificial Dielectric Waveguide, Hsien-Wen Ho Aug 1990

Conditional Artificial Dielectric Waveguide, Hsien-Wen Ho

Theses

A thin layer of semiconductor ( the guest material ) is sandwiched between two polymeric films ( the host material ) to form an artificial dielectric waveguide. An artificial dielectric is a composite material consisting of a dielectric with a large number of conducting particles arranged in a three-dimensional pattern. The particle dimensions are smaller than the optical wavelength of interest. A beam of light with a photon energy above the band-gap of the semiconductor ( pump light ) induces electric and magnetic dipoles which affect the propagation of light with a photon energy below the band-gap ( probe light …

An Artificial Neural Approach To The Decomposition Problem, Chandrashekar L. Masti Jul 1990

An Artificial Neural Approach To The Decomposition Problem, Chandrashekar L. Masti

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to develop an artificial neural approach toward addressing the intractability involved with the decomposition problem. The search for the lattice of substitution property (s. p.) partitions essential to decompositions is cast into the framework of constraint satisfaction. An artificial neural network is developed to provide solutions by performing optimization of a mathematically derived objective function over the problem space. The issue of transitivity is verified to belong to a class of problems beyond the scope of solvability for conventional quadratic-order constraint satisfaction neural networks. A theorem is stated and proved establishing that third-order correlations …

Encoding Phonetic Knowledge For Use In Hidden Markov Models Of Speech Recognition, Danming Qian Jul 1990

Encoding Phonetic Knowledge For Use In Hidden Markov Models Of Speech Recognition, Danming Qian

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Hidden Markov models (HMM's) have achieved considerable success for isolated-word speaker-independent automatic speech recognition. However, the performance of an HMM algorithm is limited by its inability to discriminate between similar sounding words. The problem arises because all differences between speech patterns are treated as equally important. Thus the algorithm is particularly susceptible to confusions caused by phonetically-irrelevant differences. This thesis presents two types of preprocessing schemes as candidates for improving HMM performance. The aim is to maximize the differences between phonologically-distinct speech sounds while minimizing the effect of variations in phonologically-equivalent speech sounds. The preprocessors presented are a discrete cosine …

Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat Jul 1990

Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A computer-based vowel articulation training aid has been developed. A "continuous" acoustic-phonetic transformation is performed to map speech parameters to a lower dimensionality display space. There are two possible approaches to this transformation problem. The transformation could be either linear or a combination nonlinear/linear. The nonlinear transformation is performed using a multi-layered feedforward neural network with linear output layers. Speech parameters are extracted either from an analog filter bank arrangement (band energies) or by a digital signal processing procedure (Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients). The speech parameters obtained from both methods correspond to the spectral envelope of the speech signals. The …

A Comparative Study Of Spectral Peaks Versus Global Spectral Shape As Invariant Acoustic Cues For Vowels, Amir Jalali Jagharghi Jul 1990

A Comparative Study Of Spectral Peaks Versus Global Spectral Shape As Invariant Acoustic Cues For Vowels, Amir Jalali Jagharghi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary objective of this study was to compare two sets of vowel spectral features, formants and global spectral shape parameters, as invariant acoustic cues to vowel identity. Both automatic vowel recognition experiments and perceptual experiments were performed to evaluate these two feature sets. First, these features were compared using the static spectrum sampled in the middle of each steady-state vowel versus features based on dynamic spectra. Second, the role of dynamic and contextual information was investigated in terms of improvements in automatic vowel classification rates. Third, several speaker normalizing methods were examined for each of the feature sets. Finally, …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

A novel method is described that combines the production of ions by laser ablation with an ion‐trap technique for the measurement of thermal‐energy charge‐transfer rates of multiply charged ions and neutrals. The charge‐transfer rate is determined by measuring the rate of loss of stored ions from the trap. Verification of the calibration of the apparatus is demonstrated through investigation of charge transfer of N2 and N2+, which has been studied by another group. We also have made the first measurement on the thermal‐energy charge‐transfer coefficient of Ar and W2+. The rate coefficient is 0.99(0.22)×10−11 …

Small Disturbance Stability As Affected By Excitation Controls, Alfredo Flores Jun 1990

Small Disturbance Stability As Affected By Excitation Controls, Alfredo Flores

Theses

The effect of excitation control systems on the power system's small disturbance stability limits has been investigated in this thesis. Three excitation control schemes namely the proportional, fast?acting and the modified fast?acting have been studied.

The stability results were predicted directly in terms of the AVR gain controlling parameters following one?dimensional and two?dimensional frequency domain separation technique. The necessary algorithms and computer simulation programs have been developed.

In case of a modified fast?acting excitation control with three unknown variables, a procedure has been proposed to obtain the stability results by extending the two?dimensional frequency domain separation technique.

Damage Effects To Si-Sio2 Structures Due To Reactive Ion Etching, Moshe D. Bunyan

Theses

This thesis presents the damage effects to the Si ? SiO2 structures due to Reactive Ion Etching (RIE). The research was carried out on Si ? SiO2 MOS capacitors which were fabricated using RIE and wet etch (Hydrofluoric acid etch (HFE)) Process. The experiment was carried out using CV technique and Ellipsometry. Various electrical parameters were measured from CV *curves of these MOS capacitors. It was observed that the CV curve obtained for the RIE etched sample showed considerable deviation from that of the control sample. This indicates the presence of excess of interface trap charge density which …

Improving Solids Conveying In Plasticating Extruders : An Investigation Into Manufacturing Processes And Manufacturing Systems For Profiled Thermoplastic Pellets, Oommen Cherian Jun 1990

Improving Solids Conveying In Plasticating Extruders : An Investigation Into Manufacturing Processes And Manufacturing Systems For Profiled Thermoplastic Pellets, Oommen Cherian

Theses

The objective of the thesis is the manufacture of thermoplastic bilobal and trilobal profiled pellets for the determination of the interparticulate co-efficient of friction exhibited by solid beds of such pellets. The enhancement of the interparticulate coefficient of friction is expected to lead to ameliorated solids conveying rates in plasticating extruders.

Predicting the product shape from a profile die is very difficult due to the elastic memory of plastics and the complex boundary conditions. Consequently the cost involved in experimenting with different profile dies is high. Therefore a standard die with several die inserts of varying cross-sections were used to …
